View Full Version : “Fosteritos” Bilbao metro, Spain

The curved glassy structures - or "Fosteritos" - that announce the Bilbao Metro network at street level are as unique to Bilbao as the Art Nouveau Metro entrances are to Paris. Their shape is evocative of inclined movement, generated by the profile of the tunnels themselves. They admit natural light by day, and are illuminated at night, forming welcoming beacons in the streetscape

The construction fo the Fosteritos, was it very expensive? Are they the same in every place? I am asking because the entraces are very distinct, much better than the entrances of the Madrid metro. I thought that the Madrid metro used more simple entrances for money reasons.

The Sarriko station sinbolizes the special identity of the citizens of Bilbao: "if it is in Bilbao, it should be the biggest".

- Indautxu (Areilza Street)
- San Mames (Sabino Arana Street)

The design of the bilbao metro is cool and functional, but the best thing of the metro is the service: the trains are punctual and the stations are safe and very clean :)

A very nicely integrated and modern transit system. Other cities should emulate Bilbao when designing their underground stations

Bilbao somewhat emulated Washington (elegant vaults) and Paris (distinctive entrance structures).

I live in Bilbao and in the past the city was hideous because of the factories, pollution,... However, nowadays the turism is becoming popular due to the superb change and it is the BEST CITY IN THE WORLD (Bilbao´s people we are always boasting, in a good way ha?). Bye

What can I say, Norman Foster is a genius. Everything he touches becomes a work or art.

Yes... the fosteritos are like the modern version of those Paris entrances (both are great though).
Btw... I like the entrances of the metro in Valencia as well.

I don't know if it's exclusive to the Bilbao Metro but I love the idea of how the poles to hold on to, inside the carriages, are split into three different parts in the middle. This way they can accommodate 3x as many hands.
Anyone have any pictures of what I'm talking about?

I was in Bilbao last year and was incredibly impressed by the strides that the city has made to improve the urban environment.
- The metro is quick, clean and efficient, not to mention quite stunning!!
- Guggenheim is an amazing structure, which has put Bilbao on the map.
- Many of the bridges crossing the main river are interesting. Nice blend of the old and the new.
- Light train system passing through the city. Again modern, elegant and efficient.
Having said all this, the outskirts of Bilbao are quite ugly and it still has the feel of an industrial city. The old quarter is very pretty and the atmosphere at night is amazing!! Great city and I think it will get even better in the next 10 years.
