ReddAlert January 2nd, 2005, 04:15 AM amazing pictures Paulo! The picture with the people looking down into the valley is really nice. I never knew that this island had such a diverse landscape. The cities are equally as beautiful as the landscape. I also like the large road bridge and the flower garden in the middle of the town. There were no pics of the beaches though, which I assume are nice too. I am actually intrested in travelling to Portugal at the end of this year.....what what be your recommendations....Madeira, Azores, or the Algarve region of the mainland? Is it warm there in December/January? Thanks
Paulo2004 January 2nd, 2005, 04:40 AM amazing pictures Paulo! The picture with the people looking down into the valley is really nice. I never knew that this island had such a diverse landscape. Well, If its beaches you're interested in, then the Algarve will be my recomendation. Madeira Islands are short of beaches, although the few available are wonderful. Azores Islands are always a must, maily due to its unique nature and inner lakes.
Temperatures here in Portugal vary between 7/10º C (low) to 13/16ºC (highs) in Winter (December/January) and 17/20º C (lows) to 25/31ºC (highs) in summer. Obviously these are average temperatures. As I write this its 4ºC outside (2am) and last summer we had temperatures of 39/40ºC in southern Portugal.
In Madeira the temperatures in December/January are usually mild.

starbuc jupiter January 3rd, 2005, 01:13 AM Paulo,
Thank you for sharing. I really like the way the city does not force the landscape to conform to it, rather it conforms to the landscape.
Great bridge-tunnel idea.

Yes, they had to allow the river to take its natural course.

Indeed itis. It's half an hour of total joy.
Roygbiv January 17th, 2005, 03:08 AM I was there for the New Years celebrations and I was left AMAZED by this island. It is quite possibly one of my favourite places ever. Funchal is a small town yet increadibly charming and surprisingly sophisticated, the island is extremely well-developed and has gone from being one of the poorest regions in Europe to the third richest in Portugal. The natural beauty of the island is nothing short of spectacular and the fireworks are absolutely glorious...rivaling any major city as far as New Years celebrations go. They spent 5 million Euros just on firework this year!!
I definitely wouldn't mind living in Madeira. :D

Nick in Atlanta February 27th, 2005, 05:55 AM @Arpels or Paulo2004: When I flew to South Africa our plane stopped on an island called Ilhas Da Sal to refuel. It used to be a Portuguese Air Force base, but I think it has become a vacation island recently. I know it's in the Cape Verde islands and not the Madeira Island chain, but do you have any info on Sal?
indigo February 27th, 2005, 06:50 AM I visited Madeira over New Years and all I can say is I wouldn't mind spending the rest of my life there. It is a true emerald in the middle of the Atlantic; such splendor and natural beauty, warm temperatures, great food and wine, friendly (and very good looking if I might add) locals. Funchal is a great city as well, it is very sophisticated and cosmopolitan for a small island town!

Sal is indeed the main tourist destination in the Cape Verde islands. I was there two years ago. Sal is basically a big beach with an international airport and big hotels, it's not particularly fascinating. Cape Verde is a very interesting place, it was a Portuguese slave outpost populated by former slaves from West Africa and a Portuguese ruling class which slowly mingled with the Africans to create a fully "Mulato" society.
Cape Verde gained its independence in 1975, at that time many wanted to remain part of Portugal with an autonomous status, much like Madeira or the Azores. More recently some have toyed with the idea of forming a Macronesian Federation (Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde).
Cape Verde is a very poor country but by no means similar to what is lived in most of continental Africa, it is regarded as an example of development, democracy and political stability in the continent. Cape Verde's economy is sutained by immigrants who have left en masse for Portugal, the Netherlands and the Boston area.
If you want to see the REAL Cape Verde--with its charming creole culture, splendid natural beauty and surreal lunar landscapes--the islands of Santiago where the capital city, Praia is located, Fogo and Sao Vicente (and the lovely city of Mindelo) are far more interesting than Sal.
Paulo2004 February 28th, 2005, 10:46 PM I agree totally with Indigo. I too have been over to Sal and although there is some beauty there is nothing particularly interesting there.

Stopping at Sal was a surreal experience. Portuguese soldiers with German Shepards would greet the South African Airways 747 on the tarmac and you'd drive to a large hangar where they had cups of coffee to drink. An hour later they'd drive you back to your plane and you were off. I remember looking at the enourmous 747 just sitting out on the tarmac with nothing around it, knowing that this giant was going to take you to either North America or South Africa.

I was just wondering. A very beautiful place though.

No, when will it get through to Americans that Portugal has its own annual multi-billion euro annual budget!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eu funds only 15% in average of ALL EUROPEAN projects, not only Portugal's. Or does Portugal surprise some people with its first class infra-structure??? We work for what we get or achieve and we also contribute to Europe's anual budget by agreeing to decrease our farm production, including our fishery industry!!!!Don't forget Portugal is one of the richest nations in the world. We don't rate well within Western Europe because our "rivals" are among the richest.

Paulo2004 January 26th, 2007, 11:58 PM Nice pic.
otro June 9th, 2007, 09:23 PM I for one am really impressed with the level of sophistication in infrastructure as well as the overall architectural and natural beauty of such a small nation. It seems to me that Portugal needs to market itself better as it appears that there is very little awareness of the country outside of Europe.

I agree with you, yet Portugal is beginning to come out of its shell due to the fact that we are holding important world venues and becoming a world famous touristic destination.

Brisbaner21 August 25th, 2007, 07:32 AM Once again Portugal astounds me with it's beauty. I just can't get over how small Portugal is, but how diverse it's landscape is. I know these islands are out in the Atlantic, but they are still part of the country. Does anyone know the population of these islands? What is the capital city and the population of the city? I really do plan to get back to this amazing country, but these islands look to be on my top of the "to visit" list along with Faro.

The islands population is about 244 000 hab.
