I love Tokyo... but this tower is a blatent rip-off of the Eiffel Tower. When I was there all they could talk about is how it was both lighter and taller than the Eiffel Tower. I was like, "Wow that's coincidence! You both ripped-off the design and improved upon its design so you could boast about its greatness." I think there are many other incredible tall buildings in Tokyo though.

dood... tokyo could do better than jacking eiffel's design. oh well, it doesn't matter, cuz it looks so lame and rather "technical" compared to eiffel. if they pulled this from eiffel, they sure did a rather lousy job.

Great! I noticed that a circular section has been added near the top, just above the small white "dish" which is the higher observatory. Anybody know when that was done? 8.5/10

Tokyo Tower (東京タワー Tōkyō tawā) is a tower in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan, whose design is based on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. The Tower is 333 meters tall (thirteen meters taller than the Eiffel Tower) making it the world's highest self-supporting iron tower.

Unlike the Eiffel Tower, Tokyo Tower is located in the middle of a city block. The tower only weighs about 4000 tons, which is extremely light compared to the 10100 ton Eiffel Tower, and it is painted in white and orange according to aviation safety regulations.

In the postwar boom of the 1950s, Japan was looking for a monument to symbolize its ascendancy as a global economic powerhouse. Looking to the Occident for inspiration, the Tokyo Government decided to erect its own Eiffel Tower. It was completed by the Takenaka Corporation in 1958 at a total cost of ¥2.8 billion. At the time it was built it was the tallest structure in Tokyo, but it has since been superceded by several buildings in the Shinjuku and Ikebukuro districts. Although it chiefly functions as a radio and television broadcasting antenna, the Tower is best known as a tourist destination, though it is decried by some as overpriced and inconveniently located, and as having poor amenities.

The first floor houses an aquarium, home to 50,000 fish, the third floor a wax museum and an attraction called the Mysterious Walking World, and the fourth floor a Trick Art Gallery. There are also two observatory floors, the main observatory (at 150 m) and the so-called "special observatory" (at 250 m); both afford a spectacular 360 degree view of Tokyo and, if the weather is clear, Mt. Fuji.

In much the same way the Eiffel Tower has become a cliche in American cinema, the Tokyo Tower is often used in anime and manga, with series such as Digimon, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo!, X, and Magic Knight Rayearth often featuring climatic events occurring at the Tokyo Tower.

Tokyo Tower is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.

Seen it 4 years ago and had the chance to see the city from it's main observetory. I think the tokyo tower is nothing special, the best part of it is it gives you a great view of Tokyo! :)

Such an icon. But sooooo ungainly with that color scheme! Yes, it's a Japanese take on a French icon, which is a combo I might normally adore. But damn, repaint it already! The airports are not that close!

A Tokyan symbol, even if its very obviously based in Eiffel Tower. But i think this one is much more modern and aggressive. And because i love Tokyo.

It looks so much like Eiffel Tower that I had a deliciuous "Nutella et Banane Crêpe" in the stand at the foot of Tokyo Tower and the taste was amazingly the same as the ones I ate near Eiffel Tower, no kidding.

Couldn't have had a better "Parisian" feeling :)

I agree the Eiffel thing takes away from it, but it still carries an identity of its own somehow. The color, and the fact it's a TV tower, not a work of art. It's always impressed the hell out of me how it's right smack in one of the densest urban areas on the planet. Oh wow, and just wait until Sky Tree.

I quite like this tower and it's unique location on top of a building and dense urban location. It's comparison to the Eiffel Tower is only really from a distance. Up close it has none of the ornate beauty of the Eiffel Tower which is what makes that tower stand out so much. The Eiffel Tower is simply beautiful, both from a distance and close up. It's location is also a mark of beauty with the surrounding park and architecture. The Tokyo tower is rather cool in it's own right, but it is certainly no Eiffel Tower.

The problem is, because it was modelled on the Eiffel Tower, it will always be compared directly with it, and as a comparison it falls flat. If it was a bit more unique it would be able to stand on it's own better.

Tokyo Tower is a beauty from the air (http://sleepny.lefora.com/2009/12/07/tokyo-tower/) too, and with it's distinctive red orange mandatory aviation warning paint it fits in very well in an otherwise neutral colored Tokyo as some kind of ultimate bright neon icon. A friend recently told me about how much it is part of Japan's identity as you can see in this moving film (http://sleepny.lefora.com/2009/12/07/tokyo-tower/#post7) about the tower in the memories of one Tokyo family all the way from the 50s and today.
