Allan December 9th, 2005, 05:33 PM Here is the history of the Trabzon and surroundings:
The city was first founded by Colonists from Sinope and Miletus during the 8th century BC, originally called Trapezus (derived from the ancient Greek word for table) and situated above the harbour. It prospered under the Romans and Byzantines, mainly in the shipping trade, and as a branch of the Silk Road.
When the Fourth Crusaders seized Constantinople in 1204, the imperial family from Comnenus established an empire along the Black Sea Coast and Alexius set up the Empire of Trebizond. This was a golden era for the city, and the 13th and 14th centuries saw the successful reign of Alexius II who created great wealth, trade and culture, making Trebizond something of an artistic icon to rival the great Italian Renaissance.
His reign ended after a destructive civil war in 1341, and over a century later Mehmet the Conqueror brought the city under Ottoman rule and revived the port as a trading centre. The city was then conquered by in 1461 by Fatih Sultan Mehmet, and while Selim the Grim was the Prince, Suleyman the Magnificent was born here and came to power in 1520. During the late Ottoman period, the city had a great Christian influence in terms of culture, and a wealthy merchant class who created several Western consulates. The city is still a busy trading centre, more so after the collapse of the USSR, although the shipping industry fell into decline after the rail route between Ankara and Erzurum, and the road to Iran.

Trabzon is booming now (especially after the Black Sea Highway is completed)......first big shopping mall of Black Sea (Forum Trabzon),first foreign hotel investment in the Black Sea (Novotel).Shopping malls like Atapark or Target Outlet Center are under construction.Trabzon also has beautiful nature for tourism (Black Sea,beautiful lakes and green mountains,Sumela Monestary etc...).Trabzon is also a fanatic football town.I hope we qualify us for Champions League :D
Our new elected mayor has prepared a big masterplan for Trabzon.It is called
61 Proje (from urban masterplaning,entertainment over cultural and sporting investments)

I got the chance to stay in Trabzon for a while one summer, and out of all the places I've ever visited as a tourist it's by far my favorite place! People are super friendly, the place looks amazing, the food is great, you've got the sea, mountains, I grew up in forests and it's got plenty of that, and to top it all off Trabzon has a kick ass soccer team. I have some pictures that I'll upload tomorrow...

May I ask you why you were in Trabzon? Why is the wrong word. How you get the idea to go to Trabzon?
I mean Tourist mostly prefear Istanbul, the Agean Sea(Bodrum, Cesme, ...) and the Mediteriean Sea(Antalya, Alanya, ...).
Influence September 24th, 2009, 01:52 PM I guess i know.. I work in a cafe here.. I ask the tourists who come to our cafe ''Why are u here in Trabzon?'' Almost all of them says ''To climb Kaçkar Mountains''. Most of the tourists i talked to are from Israel. They say they don't have such beauties in Israel. They have mountains but no trees... Kaçkars are really beautiful :)

Like you said I also usually went to Cesme, but last time (summer of 08) I finally did a Karadeniz trip from Artvin to Sinop. Cesme and places like that are nice, but it gets old pretty quick.
UltrAslan thanks for reminding me the name Muhlama I complete forgot what it was called, it was great I never had anything like it before.
And by the way Influence I did actually go to the Kackar Mountains, it was pretty awesome. There were a lot of Arab tourists from the Gulf in that area too, one family told me they'd been going there every summer for about 7 years. But Trabzon and the whole Black Sea region was really cool, I met so many random locals in the towns and villages, they're the most hospitable people. It's funny when I was passing through Ardahan and staying at a camp site, these guys were grilling kebabs and invited me to join them. Turns out they owned a butcher shop in Trabzon and were just stopping to have dinner on their drive back there. It was a really remote area so for all they knew I could've been a serial killer or something. But I found that kind of generosity is just typical for them. I even got to shoot rifles with some people near Uzungol and hang out with these Laz fishermen. It's was a mind trip going up in the mountains where it's chilly and rainy then coming down again to the coast where it's summer weather.
Trabzon and the Black Sea region get such negative coverage in Western media and even in Turkish media sometimes, but it's all really just unfounded.
