Poprad, whose the first written mention comes from 1256, used to be for 690 years – the entire Medieval and New Ages (up to 1946) just one of the towns, which currently create the town with 55,000 inhabitants. The other parts were the present urban parts – Matejovce (1251), Spišská Sobota (1256), Veľká (1268), and Stráže under Tatras (1276).

In a clearway of the High Tatras, since 1946, the history of so called Great Poprad, which has penetrated the awareness of both Slovaks and the international community as a gateway to the smallest European alpine mountains. Social, economic, and geographical significance of the town results from its advantageous transport location at the E50 road of the international significance and a main railway route Košice-Bratislava with a connection to the Czech Republic and Ukraine as well as the aerial connection, provided by the international airport Poprad - Tatry (belonging to the airports with the highest location in Europe – 718 m above sea level).

Historically, the oldest and the most significant part of the Poprad Township is Spišská Sobota, which has preserved its historical character till nowadays. The square in Spišská Sobota is, even at present, decorated with the houses built in the Renesaince period, which has attracted a number of film directors to shoot historical scenes for their movies.It is situated in the northeastern part of the town, above the Poprad River. The Church of St. Juraj (George) belongs among the significant sights; its Late Gothic wing altars as well as the main altar from the workshop of Master Pavol from Levoča are worthy of admiration. The entire urban part has been proclaimed the urban sight preservation.

Thanks, guys. The Tatra Electric railway, connecting Poprad and the High Tatras locations looks fine now, however, some cable and mountain railways needs further modernisation.

i was in poprad three weeks ago, because i broken my hand and i had to go to hospital... and as for me poprad is very ugly, there are comiblocks everywhere... perhaps there are nice parts of city but i didnt see that...

These are the pictures mostly from the centre, where the most business and city life is present. The hospital is located in the suburb, I am sure you drive throough the Poprad bypass and then you entered hospital. Btw, who denies, that there are no commieblocks? And really, by driving into the hospital it cannot be much seen.
