yep, during the dark hours of the day the Bijlmer district isn't quite the place to be in Amsterdam. But during the day, it is quite a pleasant part of the city IMO. I used to have a lot of family members living there. The majority of the black population in the Bijlmer district is from Surinamese descent (just like me :) ), those influences can be found in the colorful markets for example. And during the summer months, there are some Caribbean music and soccer festivals to be found in the parks surrounding the commieblock part of the district. It's not all trash that dominates this part of Amsterdam. And like Elmo said, the Bijlmer is being renovated at the moment, so it's getting better slightly. In terms of architecture it might be a ugly place, in terms of life it isn't that bad at all :)

More and more people even are nominating the area for being a monument, because it's the purest example of Dutch block architecture and the best implementation of the Corbusier ideas.
