Small? :lol: Rotterdams downtown covers an area roughly the size of Midtown Manhattan while only having 580.000 inh. That's not small... Stretched? Yes, but It's getting dense fast.

This picture was made by Huib Nederhof on may the 14th. The lightbundles mark the border of the fire inflicted by German bombs on may the 14th 1940. That bombing completely destroyed the old downtown of Rotterdam.

Very small?? The skyline is big, but all the buildings all everyhere round the city, and not all together.

From the pictures I see here, it looks like it only has a few buildings and for a city with a population of about 600,000 people, I expected more. Show us a panaroma of the city or something.

^^ Yes Rotterdam is a very pretty city, no doubt but I believe for a city of near 600,000, its skyline should be a bigger. That's how I ranked cities, population/building ratios.

Overview... 2005^^ NOW THAT'S ROTTERDAM, 9/10:cheers: . The earlier panoramas/screens were not doing any justice. The second panorama screen shows the density and the huge cluster of buildings. The earlier screens make Rotterdam look so empty.

Soon a new tower of 176 meters will be build; (There are rumours to make it 185 meters) here an impression; (Its near the Erasmusbridge wich is 139 meters high.) And yes you can buy appartments, because it isnt an office tower. ;)

Nice skyline (and for European standards great), only all the heights of the buildings are the same and not so high. The Maastower wil be the beginning of real high rise and will break the skyline of Rotterdam open. The city needs a 200 m HQ office building to have a more mature skyline. It only feeds on apartments buildings. Office buildings gives the city more finesse and a business vibe.

Best skyline of the netherlands, en certainly in the top 5 of europe. Gave it a 9.5 since there is always room for improvement.

Why is Rotterdam so beautiful!:lol: I love it;

Ook ik heb het wolkenkrabberweekend bezocht.
- Westin Hotel
- Hoge Marinier
- Waterstadtoren

Verder nog rond gelopen en de taptoe gezien en foto’s gemaakt.
Op aan rade van andere mensen heb ik nu geprobeerd meer verkeer en mensen en of dieren in me foto’s mee op te nemen om zo meer een streetlife en een stads sfeer aan de foto’s te geven.
Ik denk dat het me aardig gelukt is verder heb ik natuurlijk weer veel gebouwen maar ja wat wil je met een wolkenkrabberweekend.

Het is een grote serie met een stel standaard foto maar ook een hoop goeie (hoop ik).
Ik doe de serie in meerdere delen maar wel in deze threat. Ik heb omdat het er zo veel zijn geen kader om de foto’s gedaan.
In totaal heb ik 300 foto’s ofzo gemaakt ( Canon 350 D) met een 1 GB kaartje en een 4 GB kaartje.

Aftrap bij het station natuurlijk een foto die ondertussen al vaak zat gemaakt is.

Thanks a lot! However, Rotterdam has the worlds 2nd largest port and the biggest port of Europe. Considering that, it's quite strange that R'dam is unknown for a lot of people.

Looks like a Canadian city. I wasn't expecting that at all. I'd feel right at home in Rotterdam. Many Dutch I've met feel the same when they come here. Rotterdam looks great. One of the best skylines in Europe.

10/10 It's my hometown so I gotta give it credit. Seriously, especially for a European city with under 600.000 inhabitants this skyline is just WOW! The years ahead will only make it better, with lots of skyscrapers to come!

I don`t think the skyline is the type of architecture that it`s famous for. They probably mean the old stuff like churches and such.

^^ The old City Centre was completely bombed during the war. Almost nothing historical was left intact. What was left was mostly badly damaged and was torn down where sometimes a renovation (rebuilding) could have saved a historic structure. No, Rotterdam is especially famous for its modern and daring architecture. The last years many more cities go that way, but Rotterdam was and is one of the front runners in modern architecture, especially for a relatively small city (on a world scale).

^^ Rotterdam is home to a couple of the Netherlands most renowned architectural firms, such as MVRDV, Neutelings-Riedijk and especially the OMA or Office for Metropolitan Architecture, the firm of Rem Koolhaas (cf. Beijing CCTV, Seattle Public Library). There's a lot of modern architecture in Rotterdam, so naturally there must be a couple of good or at least interesting things to see there. On the other hand, I don't think it is architecturally very superior to other large Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht or Groningen - but that's just my opinion.

I've only been to Rotterdam once myself, but I do sort of like this city so I might as well defend its honor a bit with a couple of architecturally interesting buildings. I'll only post one or two thumbnail pictures per building, for more info and pictures you should just search for it on google of flickr - or click on them ;)

That's 4 examples. You can find more if you make the effort of looking around the internet a bit.

I can agree with you that the skyline of Rotterdam, for now and despite the many 100m+ buildings, looks a bit dull, because the majority of the towers have a flat roof. This should change as more projects take shape though. I also understand that a lot of it looks prefab, most probably because of the artificial materials used for the cladding. This too should gradually change. At this moment, construction is going on for Rotterdam's new tallest building, called the "Maastoren", which will be covered in granite.
