Founded in around 1400's to 1500's.
Duksugung Palace witnessed the final years of the Joseon (Chosôn) dynasty in the early twentieth century. On Oct 8, 1895 the murder of Queen Min occurred here when an assassin was dispatched from the Japanese legation. The Joseon kings spent the remaining years of their rule holed up in the palace until the abolition of the throne in 1907. Though most of the structures are fairly recent reproductions of the original palace built in the 15th century, the main gate (image 1) is over five-hundred years old. The blatantly modern buildings at the top of the site map are annexes of the Museum of Modern Art. The rest of the palace grounds have become a pleasant park where Seoulites come to enjoy the brilliant foliage.
