Chinese celebrities plan seven-hour fund-raising show in Hong Kong for tsunami victims

Some of the biggest pop stars from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China were ready to sing Friday in a seven-hour charity concert for victims of the tsunami that ravaged southern Asia.

The 150 stars on the show's lineup included Hong Kong pop singers Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Karen Mok and Kelly Chan. Kung fu action star Jet Li was also expected to take the stage and urge people to donate money.

Taiwan's R&B king Jay Chou, pop diva Chang Hui-mei, Coco Lee and boy band F4 would also appear.

The "Crossing Borders" charity concert was to be held at the Hong Kong Stadium, and the event's theme song was a reworked version of "We Are the World." The original song, written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, was used in 1985 to raise money for Ethiopian famine victims.

The Hong Kong rendition, simply called "Love," keeps the English chorus of "We Are the World." But it features Chinese lyrics written by Johnny Chen and Cheng Kwok-kong.

Organizers said money raised by Friday's show will go to the Red Cross, World Vision, Oxfam, the United Nations Children's Fund and the Salvation Army.

Hong Kong has launched an all-out fund raising effort for victims of Indonesia's magnitude-9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami on Dec. 26, with donors ranging from vegetable vendors to top tycoon Li Ka-shing.

Also planning to appear Friday were Leon Lai, Aaron Kwok, Cecilia Cheung, Wu Bai, Hu Bing, Gigi Leung, Joey Yung and Jackie Chan's son, Jaycee.
