I read this in "The Leader" yesterday!!!! :)

Westfield wants to redevelop the Myer end of the Westfield complex at Miranda. Sutherland Council wants them as part of any redevelopment to include a Town Square along The Kingsway, the major road running between Cronulla and Sutherland and runs along it's northern side. The town square would follow that of Greenwood Plaza at North Sydney and would centre around a fig tree, located just near the entrance to the complex and right in front of a KFC outlet. In exchange for this the council may relax development controls for the Westfield site. The council also see this as an opportunity to revitalise the shopping strip along the road. Good news is Westfield are prepared to consider the square as part of the redevelopment. I think it's a good idea

Council plans to put the proposal on public exhbition for comment.

In addition to this, they (the council) believe that there is a possiblity of more residential development in Miranda but I guess it will be midrisers seeing skyscrapers are virtually forbidden within the region.

This is VERY good idea!!!
I absolutely hate any enclosed shopping malls because they kill the street life, but having a public square outside definitely revitalise the street nearby. They should upgrade the station as well. A couple of office buildings would be nice too. :)

No. As I said scrapers are forbidden in the Sutherland Shire. Eight storey buildings are the max.

What I don't understand about the council down here is why they don't concede that Miranda's a centre of significance in Southern Sydney and work with it - it really could hold its own if given the chance. The shopping centre's already bigger than Hurstville, it's more central to the south, and it's better placed to serve Wollongong commuters.

Hopefully the council realises that up is the only way to go with Miranda. There's not enough space for anything else, unless you want half a suburb of midrisers...

What exactly do Westfield mean by a redevelopment? does it mean making that end bigger, or what? I missed the Leader on Tuesday. I don't know how much they can do with the site, although an open-air section around the stage there would be interesting. A square for miranda would be great though, although it needs one in the physical heart (maybe tear down that piece of junk known as Foodworks/Kiora Mall - almost nobody goes there except the people going to the RTA)...

It's only at the planning stage and Westfield are examining possible options. There could be extra floors built on top of the existing ones.

Miranda Station is supposed to get an "easy access" upgrade with lifts etc. I haven't seen or read anything about it's progress.

Miranda has its lift and its station upgrade. I found it quite pointless. they made a disabled access friendly station.....disabled access friendly. The only difference is that the chances of collision have been minimised - but still not really worth the amount of money spent.

While I dont mind some shopping centres, I actually prefer street shopping. A new town centre would be great if it places a focus for more streetlife.

Miranda station now boasts the LARGEST PASSENGER LIFT in Australia!! ive used it its huge. can hold 28 people!
In 1992 , after its extension it became Australia's largest shopping centre with 108,000sqm or retail space and 4,400 car bloody spaces. It measures nearly 1km long.
i think its no7 now?

I think the main reason for the upgrade has something to do with some of the dodgy types that used to hang around the old ramp. I imagine some young people would have also rode their skateboards etc. down the ramp which doesn't provide the most ideal environment for the disabled and elderly (you'd be surprised how many elderly residents use the train around here.

The Kingsway could really use an injection of life right now, so it'll be interesting to see if any of this actually goes ahead. Hopefully Sutho Council also decides to change the tiling theme for Miranda... The current one's awfully outdated. It needs something modern, not the current "bricks on the ground with a zigzag line of pebble-crete".

Miranda Fair deserves to be something great. It is, after all the second-largest Westfield, and definitely one of their flagships. (the other flagship in Sydney would probably be parramatta, where a rethink of the centre layout is desperately needed).

No, their flagship is Westfield Bondi Junction.

Flagship wasn't the word I was looking for... Still can't think of what it was I was searching for.

One of the things that the fair has going for it is that once you're out of the parking lots (and they're not TOO bad to navigate, I've seen worse) it's relatively simple to find your way around. Mostly, this is because of the centre's linear format (ie it's basically in a line, and you have well-known stores that are so well-placed that they're useful as navigation if you get lost.

They need more parking up there, everyone parks on the street or at Parkside Plaza these days (I've seen parking backed up a good km from the centre itself.

It's a shame they can't expand over the Kingsway. Another thing about Miranda - there's alot of res construction there atm.

Maybe another level, this new outdoor area (will that mean bye-bye to that KFC on the corner?) and a whole lot of extra parking.

Miranda's one of the few major shopping centres in Sydney that hasn't become completely pay-parking, thanks to a whole lot of NIMBYs, lol.

:runaway:

And on the topic of Easy Access upgrades, I can't wait for the day when a lift's installed in Kirrawee. It's needed.

heres some recent piccies from lennyr from westfield rooftop.

Miranda Westfield is set on one of my favourite spots in Sydney, with the city to the north and the Royal National Park to the south. From the roof you can see for long distances in both directions.

I started thinking about buildings in Miranda when reading a letter in the local paper saying they didn't want "Miranda style high-rise" along the propsed F6 extension.

To the north of Westfield

That KFC does get a bit of business.

I've heard nothing. Might need to check with Sutherland council.
