View Full Version : Edinburgh - UK
Irish Blood English Heart December 18th, 2002, 09:13 PM Capital of Scotland and one of the worlds most beautiful cities even though it has no skyscrapers, and personally I hope it never has any, here are the pics:

8/10
AG December 18th, 2002, 11:53 PM Beautiful. Who said all cities need tall buildings to have a good skyline when you have nature in the background and some spires of cathedrals and churches.
8.5/10
JiminyCricket December 19th, 2002, 01:15 AM I have a good friend going to school in Wales, and he said that Edinburgh was one of the best cities he has ever been to. Skyscrapers be damned in this city. It's already too beautiful. 9/10.
tayser December 19th, 2002, 01:41 AM one of the world's most spectacular ancient skylines!
9.5 / 10

Pablo December 19th, 2002, 07:33 AM an ancient city;)
breezyboy69 December 19th, 2002, 03:05 PM even though its not tall, its still beautiful... 8/10 :)
mimil December 19th, 2002, 07:16 PM I really love this ancient city........perfect.
10/10.
Irish Blood English Heart December 19th, 2002, 10:51 PM wow im glad to see Edinburgh is doing so well, it shows people on this site arent always pro-skyscraper at all costs.
This is 1 city whose skyline would be made worse by skyscrapers.
PowerCityFreak December 20th, 2002, 03:29 AM LOOKS SO MEDIEVAL, HUM, WONDERFUL, FEELS LIKE A GREAT MOVIE !!! AMAZINGLY MIDDLE AGED !!!!
10/10....
ganjavih December 20th, 2002, 11:35 AM Edinburgh is gorgeous... don't make the mistake of ruining your skyline with some modern piece of junk.
Rainier Meadows December 22nd, 2002, 05:23 AM Ok extra point for the rise in elevation in the center of the city - Edinburgh holds the most divine architecture and urban environments I've ever seen - an image of this city adorn my monitors background I love it so much! :okay:
6.5/10
ganjavih December 22nd, 2002, 05:38 AM Rainier,
Gee, all that praise and then you give a 6.5?
Rainier Meadows December 22nd, 2002, 06:13 AM It's fair - if we're talking just skylines (which we are) Edinburgh doesn't fit the mold I envision of a great one - height is very important to me! :)
SUNNI December 26th, 2002, 02:50 AM height dont matter in this one
9/10
luis4083 December 26th, 2002, 04:31 AM how can i rate it if there's no skyline?
IMO, i think there's a need of another forum entitled "Rate Our City"
what if...the cities listed in rate our skylines will be ranked according to score. This city got high score even without skyline and be included among top list.
gothicform December 28th, 2002, 06:22 AM obviously those spires and a castle sitting on top of a volcano core dont consitute a skyline but something else entirely :baaa:
Mplsuptown December 28th, 2002, 08:24 AM I remember on my trip to Scotland back when I was in 10th grade, we had gone to the Military Tattoe (sp), I think it was either the end of August or early September. It was a school trip and we spent 3 weeks in Scotland and a week in London. I loved Princess Street and the Castle. That tower down in the park off Princess was a heck of a climb. Sorry to hear about the recent fire that destroyed so many historical buildings.
Funny thing, when we had a tour of the castle, about 10 years later when I was in the military and stationed in Germany, I had a trip to Lincoln England, my next door neighbor from Germany was also on another plane with me. We got together with an old friend of mine who was stationed in Okinawa with me, while we were waiting for a train to take us into London, I was browsing through some tourist adds and one from Edinburg caught my attention. On the cover was the same tour guide, that had shown my classmates from school, from the castle. It was weird.

DrumCorpsAlum February 26th, 2003, 04:02 PM THose church steeples and spires make a good enough skyline for me! 7/10.
weirdo March 22nd, 2003, 08:23 PM looks like a perfect city for walking around and sleeping afterwards. that's a compliment. 8 for the city. 8.5/10 because of the clouds.

Talisker August 22nd, 2003, 01:39 PM Dirty, stuck-up, snobbish little dump IMO - even 7-storey buildings were blasted for attempting to transform Edinburgh into new york. Granted, the construction of skyscrapers whithin the city centre would probably ruin things, but, as far as skylines go, I don't rate it at all. 2/10
Big! October 9th, 2003, 11:01 AM nice city
Andrew October 9th, 2003, 01:03 PM Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities you'll find anywhere and I rate skylines of church spires and castles just as highly as skylines of 1000 ft skyscrapers and Edinburgh has one of the best examples of ancient skylines anywhere so I give it 9/10
ParraMan January 14th, 2004, 02:05 AM 6
Has a beautiful old core, which absolutely doesn't need skyscrapers anywhere near it. But the skyline, made up of the Castle, Arthur's Seat and a couple of church spires, is not dense enough, or tall enough. There are some new highrises going up around the place, particularly around Newmarket Station which look fantastic and are sufficiently removed from the rest of the city to be an asset in their own right.

MrLove August 11th, 2004, 10:55 PM The best city in Scotland by far! :)
FYI:- Edinburgh is actually an English settlement. The English invaded the lowlands and made a settlement (a borough) . They named it after their king - Edwin and it became know as Edinburgh/Edwinborough.
I red it somewhere, was quite shocked and told a friend who refuses to believe it - maybe someone can cast a light on this?
VoytekZ August 12th, 2004, 07:09 AM the city is flat as a table, still kind of neat, but no skyline
Thonix October 21st, 2004, 11:51 AM Too dark, dull and lifeless. But that's just judging from the pics.
Orfeo October 22nd, 2004, 11:40 AM It is a nice city, but it doesn' really have much of a skyline at the moment.
6.5/10

A common English myth. Edinburgh was infact, previously known as Dunedin, not Edwinborough. It came from the Brythonic Din Eidyn. The Bernician Angles later invaded in the 7th century and the city was renamed to Edin-Burh. It was a Votadini (Brythonic tribe) settlement around the 1st century. The Castle (not the city) came into English hands for the first time in 1174. The occupation didn't last long, however. The next occupation by the English was in the 13th century when Edward I installed 300~ soldiers to establish a permanent occupation. In 1341 (after 45 years of occupation) the castle was back in Scottish hands after a group of Scottish merchants ambushed and defeated the garrison. In 1650 Cromwell attacked the castle with heavy artillary to force a surrender. The final siege occured between James VII (of Scotland) and William of Orange in 1686.
Hope that laid to rest this silly 'Edwin's borough thing.'

the best panorama of Edinburgh is from the radical road (just below the crags on the far left of the above pano) and all you can see is incredible tenement density and church spires sticking up. Pissed off I forgot to take one when I was living there.

I take your point nout but take issue with "no skyline". There is no skyscraper skyline but there is a lovely lowrise skyline punctuated by spires an crenellations. Edinburgh is a fine handsome masculine city. Up with Liverpool among those vying to be regarded as architecturally the second best city in the UK.

New Yorker25 July 30th, 2009, 05:33 AM Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the one of the most beautiful in the U.K. Church spires and cathedrals and a beautiful natural setting often make a skyline far more beautiful than dozens of glass boxes and tall towers clustered together. Edinburgh's skyline would be ruined by ugly glass boxes. Edinburgh deserves nothing less than a 10!

One of the Greatest Cities in the world:)
Let us remember that Edinburgh has a very small population in comparison to some other cities like New York, London and Dubai so you cant compare it to those cities:)

Correct. I have to say that glass boxes are not necessarily ugly but there is a time and place. Edinburgh is unarguably the best looking major city in the UK.

saybanana February 11th, 2012, 12:45 AM 7.5. It's a beautiful city. My tour guide said Edinburgh had the worlds first tallest skyscraper city, where many buildings are 10 stories tall. Much of the city is cliffside so you can enter the front from the bottom of the hill, and the from the back which is entered from the hill. I like all the pointy churches, towers, and buildings which make a romantic skyline. The castle lit up at night does really make it magical. There aren't many modern, tall glass structures. It would ruin Edinburgh if put in the old town.
PortoNuts February 11th, 2012, 02:55 PM Edinburgh old buildings were quite tall for its time.
