citykid09 January 16th, 2005, 05:12 AM didnt know it looked that good :)
Ohh Yes, San Antonio is a very nice city! Much of the city is centered around Tourism, so there is plenty to do and see.

A picture of one of the attractions in Downtown San Antonio.
texasboy January 16th, 2005, 05:24 AM Flashback to 1992.
SChristopher January 16th, 2005, 06:02 AM San Antonio is often forgotten when discussions of history and soul and beauty and vibrancy arise, but it challenges the best of them in all those categories. I LOVE IT, walking down the riverwalk by all the restaurants and going to eat by it and hitting the shops and even the cheesy boat rides are golden. Not to mention the museam and the colorful history of downtown. I wish they had a little more height to the downtown but it makes up for it so much that it is not neccesary. Did I mention I love San Antonio and my feelings felt there are unmatchable ? haha
texasboy January 16th, 2005, 06:10 AM even the cheesy boat rides are golden.
lol. Why are they cheesy? I actually find dining on the boats pretty relaxing.
citykid09 January 16th, 2005, 06:25 AM They are not chessy, but they have a look that don't go with the theme of the city. They should make the boats look like they come from a time long ago, not like they are from today.

texasboy January 16th, 2005, 06:29 AM I think if you pay more money, you can get a boat not so crowded. Plus they will serve you food.
SChristopher January 16th, 2005, 07:59 AM haha, I didnt even know that they had dinner boats I was talking about the ones with the tour guide person talking like the one pictures. HAHA its all in good fun though.
HoustonTexas January 16th, 2005, 10:32 AM My tour guide, when I was dining and wining with my date, said that "The mall was made up of 90% Glass, and 10% Credit Card... Wouldn't want to be in there in a Tornado."
What makes San Antonio so differnt from that of almost every other "Southern" City, is that its so Downtown Orientated. Theres really little or nothing (apart from Sea World and Six Flags) to do except Downtown! and the skyline is so simple, and beautiful. You can see all of the flourishing 1920's buildings, still dominating the Skyline. I'm glad its not so sprawled out like every other city in Texas. Austin and San Antonio are basically the same, simply because they both have a million in metro population, San Antonio has barly any sprawl (yes, they do have some, don't get me wrong) but if Austin were to expand there city limits, or Annex like San Antonio, they would pretty much be the same.
San Antonio: AWESOME!
Talbot January 17th, 2005, 09:40 AM I love San Antonio, I really like going there when I go to visit my family. There's so much to do in San Antonio.
skysdalimit January 17th, 2005, 09:01 PM I'm going to San Antonio Summer 2006 for the National Lutheran Youth Gathering, it is going to be awesome!!!! The last one was in Atlanta, and that was really fun too. Tell me, what nightclubs are good there and what else is there to do in SA? Is their a public transportation system like the MARTA in ATL?
cwilson758 January 17th, 2005, 09:07 PM I dion't know how many people in the South know this, but Indy also has a canal. All the time, people complain that Indy's canal should be more like San Antonio's. Indy's is nice...but still smells of fresh paint, where SA looks amazing. One of the major complaints is that there aren't many restaurants and cafes along Indy's...the City's response is that they want it to be more fitness oriented. <YAWN>
texasboy January 17th, 2005, 09:10 PM skysdalimit, SA does not have not have rail like ATL, but if you stay in dowtown, it shuld be easy to get around. I do not know much about San Antonio's nightlife, but maybe a forumer here on SSC can tell you about it.
BSofA04 January 17th, 2005, 09:21 PM San Antonio's riverwalk is strickly for the tourists. I had a friend come to town a week ago and all she wanted to do was hang out on the river, which is cool but not for the locals (much too expensive to drink). Most people don't realize that at street level, San Antonio is very dense. However, the architecture is unbelieveable and more than makes up for our lack of skyline.
skysdalimit January 17th, 2005, 10:53 PM Cool, and I'm sure we will be staying in downtown. The Alamo Dome is DT, right?
texasboy January 17th, 2005, 10:55 PM yep

skysdalimit January 17th, 2005, 10:58 PM Sweet that is where it's going to be. How big is the convention center there?
texasboy January 17th, 2005, 11:02 PM How big is the convention center there?
I have no idea, but here is a pic. It is located on the River Walk.

TexasStar January 18th, 2005, 08:38 PM SA is a unique and beautiful city.
Can't wait to get back for a visit.
skysdalimit January 19th, 2005, 12:44 AM Oooo wow looks nice.
DuskTrooper January 19th, 2005, 10:14 PM VERY Nice. I love San Antonio!
BSofA04 January 19th, 2005, 11:26 PM Brand new 1,000 room hotel will sit right beside it by 2008. Anyone have any renderings?
Liger Zero January 20th, 2005, 11:00 PM Cool. I've havent heard much about the city, but from what I've seen on this thread, San Antonio looks great.

Vulcan January 20th, 2005, 11:36 PM SA has a lot of character. I've never been, but the photos make me want to go exploring. Great pics!
lovecharlie August 6th, 2005, 07:02 AM A lot more class than any other city in Texas that ive seen, a very Southern England feel to it ( yes im from England). Puts the ugly skylines of Houston and Dallas into shame. Great pics.
Expat August 6th, 2005, 04:47 PM Beautiful! I would love to see it in real life.
TexasBoi August 7th, 2005, 11:49 PM Nevermind.
Sa Town Tx Gringo August 8th, 2005, 12:33 AM Wow a San Antonio thread woohoo. Ok as far clubs ton of them down on the River Walk. As far as San Antonio and Austin being the same in population.. Not even close San Antonio is 8th largest city in the U.S and Austin is 17th. Ofcourse this is city proper limits which San Antonio is one of the largest cities land wise in the U.S. San Antonio is alot different then Houston and Dallas, Dont get me wrong I love both of them but San Antonio just has a certain charm to me. Not to mention you cant beat all the Historic buildings downtown Houston and Dallas dont have nearly as many historic skyscrapers. Heres just few Facts San Antonio is home to the worlds 6th tallest Hospital, 35th tallest hotel "Marriot" and was also home to the first building with AC.
Nic August 8th, 2005, 01:39 AM I believe they were referring to metro population, as San Antonio's city population makes up about 80% of it metro population, while Austin makes up about 50% of it's metro population; they are certainly fairly close in metro population. However, San Antonio is currently larger than Austin....but we're still better! J/K!
Sa Town Tx Gringo August 8th, 2005, 03:42 AM I believe they were referring to metro population, as San Antonio's city population makes up about 80% of it metro population, while Austin makes up about 50% of it's metro population; they are certainly fairly close in metro population. Atleast the majority of our population isnt college students! haha jk And well we have the World champion Spurs and you have the longhorns! No I like Austin alot me and friends go up there about once a month the drive isnt bad at all Since we live on Northside of San Antonio with my driving it takes about 40 mins which is just like going to other side of San Antonio for me. It will be crazy to see what happens in the future.. They are growing together pretty rapidly with San Marcos etc. So maybe will be just like Forth Worth and Dallas in few years us being Dallas you being Fort Worth haha. And well you guys have Frost Bank tower I love that damn thing everytime I drive into town!
gaviidae August 8th, 2005, 04:06 AM Incredible! I was unaware that San Antonio was such a charming and beautiful city. Definitely not the image I see when I think of Texas.
Nic August 8th, 2005, 06:36 AM Well, it really couldn't be near D/FW, as Dallas and Fort Worth are only 30 miles apart; but hypothetically if it could, it wouldn't be for a few decades. And, all the estimates I have seen, have Austin metro surpassing San Antonio metro by the 2020 census, or maybe 2030. So, I don't think we would be the Fort Worth in this hypothetical scenario. Anyways, I really like San Antonio, and hope it continues to thrive.
Nic August 8th, 2005, 06:51 AM Incredible! I was unaware that San Antonio was such a charming and beautiful city. Definitely not the image I see when I think of Texas.
Well, it's probably unfair for you to bear the brunt of my wrath, but you caught me on a bad day. Maybe you should actually have a clue about something, before you get some b/s idea of what it's like. I am sick and tired of hearing people whom have never stepped foot in TX, and thinking they have a clue of what our state has to offer. Guess what, Texas is huge; from deserts to forests, beaches to mountains, from scorching heat to blizzards. Yes, San Antonio has a lot to offer; but so does Houston, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, and countless smaller cities/towns. I could post pics, or facts, but it's all been done repeatedly, and obviously doesn't help much. Sorry if I seem upset, but I guess reading people bash my state gets a little annoying. I suppose I'll end my rant now with a request; please look through some threads on this site, and look at the history, diversity, beauty, etc. Texas has in it's borders.
TexasBoi August 8th, 2005, 07:20 AM ^^ well at least you said it lol. get tired of that shit my damn self.you wouldn't believe what some people would say about this state tho.it becomes hilarious afterwhile.Hell some people that has never set foot in this state thought houston and dallas was both in a desert like phoenix. :hahaha:
Sa Town Tx Gringo August 8th, 2005, 10:23 AM Im with you guys people have this image of Texas which isnt even close to what it really is! Just like when I have family or friends come in town their shocked to see I actually live on a fairly large hill with nice view of the whole city. "Texas Hilly country starts in San Antonio" O well what can you do we live in the best state in the country and know one else knows it but us haha
Expat August 8th, 2005, 05:24 PM When I said SA was beautiful and hoped to see it someday, TexasBoi replied "Nevermind". When this guy from Minneapolis notes that SA is beautiful and not what he expected, everybody got upset. We are trying to learn about your state - that is why we looked at this thread. When we say nice things, why get nasty? Very welcoming.....
TexasBoi August 8th, 2005, 07:46 PM calm it down. that nevermind wasnt towards you.relax
Sa Town Tx Gringo August 8th, 2005, 07:53 PM My comment wasnt directed towards anyone on the boards personally... Its just everyone has this sterotype of Texas and it gets so old! Come Visit San Antonio we promise to show you a good time!

Thanks for the invite. I hope to visit San Antonio one of these days as well as other places in Texas. Texas isn't alone. People have stupid ideas about most places. When you grow up watching westerns, you assume that Texas is one big ranch with oil wells. And then for decades, Texas has placed tourist advertising on our television stations promoting a wild west image. And then when the governor of Texas on national television invites gay veterans to leave the state, it confirms negative ideas of the state. However, it is obvious that Texas is so much more than that. It has occurred to me that I know little about an exciting part of the US and have been trying to learn more about it.

AGREED. If Indianapolis' canal was anything like SA's, downtown Indy would be even TWICE as awesome as it already is. It's nice now, but just too new looking and unaged. It needs more character in architecture; give it some feaux age. hah Screw the friggin joggers, GIVE ME RESTAURANTS AND TOURISTS.
I jog on streets and sidewalks anyway.
atx001 August 9th, 2005, 07:55 AM Those pictures do San Antonio a lot of justice, it's a great city.
Tiger Beer October 31st, 2005, 09:04 PM Beautiful! Well worth bringing back to the top!
Sigur Ros October 31st, 2005, 11:39 PM And, all the estimates I have seen, have Austin metro surpassing San Antonio metro by the 2020 census, or maybe 2030.
1.9 million to 1.4 million.
You had your 90's tech boom, that's over now.
The estimates use 90's growth data. The 90's were one of San Antonio's worst decades growth rise. Well, more so the early to mid 90's.
San Antonio is currently going through a "boom" of its own in terms of the economy.
This year alone San Antonio metro is said to have grown by over 50,000. Not to mention San Antonio is the third fastest growing city behind only LA and Phoenix. 22,000 growth from 2003 to 2004.
No way, San Antonio ever gets replaced as 3rd largest metro.
Double L November 1st, 2005, 06:07 AM It's a great compliment that you used some of my pictures texasboy.
Thanks for the thread. :okay:

Ahh, but New Orleans is just as downtown-oriented as SA, and is probably even more so.
