I know it isn't as large as some cities, but it's growing, something some cities can't say about theres.

7/10 just because it's my city.

It would be nice if we could have a few 500+ footers, maybe around downtowns central core. That area seems to be lacking.

X-seed 4000, you're joking, right? How can you say Spokane and Tacoma have larger skylines than Salt Lake City? Maybe the photos don't show how tall the buildings are, but I can tell you right now SLC's skyline is bigger than those two cities, as I'm sure it's bigger than Ontario, California, though I couldn't find stats on their skyline.

First, the Wells Fargo Center, the tallest in SLC, is 423' feet, whereas the tallest in Tacoma is 337' feet and the tallest in Spokane is 288' feet. Moreoever the second tallest in SLC, the LDS Office Building at 419' feet, is taller than Tacoma's second tallest, at 245' feet. It's also taller than Spokane's second tallest at, 259' feet.

I could go on, but I believe you're getting the point, no?

Anywho, I do agree Salt Lake's skyline isn't the greatest. But for a city of only 181,000 I do think it's doing very well and will grow even more in the coming future. During the 90's Salt Lake City saw three of its 5 tallest built, and I'm sure by 2010 we'll see at least two more skyscrapers gracing the skyline, either built or under construction.

I don't think it's as bad as a 3.0, because it does have buildings, but to each their own I guess.

The city looks quite nice, not the worlds nicest towers but as a whole the city itself looks ok and the setting is good, so i give it an average 6.

It's allright, but it could be better since the metro is around one million, plus it's a capital city, and it pretty much is the hub of everything in Utah. 4.5/10

I wouldn't get your hopes up. That tower has about a 10% chance of getting approved, let alone going up...

Extrm, I don't know where you got your numbers but I talked with the Downtown Alliance and they said that even though the plans were put on hold they're still banking on the tower going up if vacancy rates drop, which they're sure to do. So I still have hopes.

Sean Reynolds
December 20th, 2002, 06:14 AM
Sean, how can this project possibly continue, if the company the was going to build it went bankrupt?

There is a difference between going bankrupt and filing for Chapter 11. They're still a company that only filed for Chapter 11 on SOME of their property, not all of it. Therefore they still have the plans on hold for the tower.

And nothing is under construction, but two towers are proposed for downtown. Once the vacancy rates drop they'll start construction on the Main Street Tower for sure. Not clear if the other tower will get off the ground, it's on hold right now.

His name is Bob Farrington. And I got an e-mail from him this morning. Though the guy still has an option on the land, it looks like (to Farrington) that there is zero chance the building will go up. At least thats what the e-mail said. So, sadly it's all over for me.....lol

Haha, its funny to see the replys... Yeah, its not new york or Hong Kong... but I think its nice. Most of the skyscrapers are in the 300-400 foot range building it a nice base for the skyline, and once a couple of 500 and 600'ers go in Its going to be great! Itll probably look like Denver'ish with our own little flavor.

Look at Denver, pre 1980, that city wasn't anything special (and it was about the same size as Salt Lake City is right now) then an intense 5 year span of building gave it a nice skyline. Im not saying the exact same thing will happen with SLC, but skylines change quick, and SLC has a nice base, preparing it for its boom. :)

ok,so ill rate SLC based on little rock arkansas. I gave little rock a 8. So ill tell yall what i think the pros are, i like the fact that there is alot of buildings(if not all skyscrapers) and ofcourse the setting. Cons, in little rock they have atleast one 500footer and the metro population is waaay under 1 million. thats all.

Well I'm biased since SLC was the first real city I ever saw as a child. I love the Wells Fargo Center and Gateway Tower West, although for that size range, GTW is my favorite skyscraper. I think both should have been taller.

There are many decently sized surface parking lots and a few small rundown buildings downtown that would be a perfect place for a signature 500+ footer tower with a parking garage. SLC is poised to grow when the economic demand returns. Hamilton Partners will be a nice addition to the skyline. It should only be slightly shorter than One Utah Center across the street (the one with a Copper Pyramid on top). Also Gateway Tower East will be getting a much needed facelift soon, and will no longer be the ugliest building in SLC.

I give SLC an overall 7.5/10

Here is a rendering I made with one of Sean Reynolds Photos to show how much nicer SLC could be with a signature tower or two.

Rayman, wanna know why it's a small skyline? Because the city isn't that big.

I really don't understand some of your logic here. Compared to NYC, does SLC have a skyline? No. But compare it to cities its size and most can't even compare.

In contrast, Nashville is about the size of Salt Lake City.

Compare......then get back to me.

And no this isn't an attack on Nashville, but I really believe Salt Lake has not only a bigger skyline, but a nicer one as well.

But I guess you're all welcome to your opinion.

I live in Salt Lake City and it's not the greatest skyline. It has high density, but they're not tall enough and it needs more color. The skyline is quite nice close up driving down Main Street and approaching from maybe 300 South. However, anybody who gets a chance to go to Salt Lake City should take a look at the skyline from the connection where 400 South merges into 500 South. That's probably the best angle to view it from, and it looks quite nice from there. In addition, the scenery and backdrop are some of the best in the country for a largish city. I enjoy the city itself, as well. Those pictures don't really do it the justice it deserves, although it's definitely no Denver or Calgary (which are both great cities with amazing skylines). However, I disagree on the "growing" part. Salt Lake City's skyline is not growing and from what I've heard only one new skyscraper is planned for the near future (although who knows how nice it's going to look). For these reasons I'll give it a 6.5/10.

Even for its skyline, I've seen smaller cities with bigger skylines such as Ontario (California), Tacoma, and Spokane... 3/10

Ontario, CA doesn't have a skyline. I don't remember anything there more than a couple stories tall. I don't know about the others.

Um it reminds me of Richmond... Except Richmond is smaller ( I think), and its skyline is larger. But oh well.

I still like it in some of those pics. And the mountains don't hurt a bit. :D

I think Salt Lake's skyline is ok, and it is growing. However alot of the buildings are form the 70's and I think they look ugly. I do like the Wels Fargo Center, One Utah Center, Grand America Hotel, Gateway Tower West, and the new look of the Zions Bank Tower, but I think we could use 500+ foot buildings. I don't think they should get too much high then 600ft because then they would probubly start to become an eye sore in Salt Lake, in other citys however I think they would be ok.

Very bland and generic. Just a grouping of boxes with little height and some density. However, I love the city's State Capitol building and if this were based on the city's setting, it would earn a perfect "10". But as skylines go, SLC is disapointing.

The City Creek Center is going to add 5 or 6 100+-foot skyscrapers by 2011 or so, including another 400-footer. And that one on Main Street still hasn't been built. Hopefully these 6 or 7 will help the skyline out. One of the skyscrapers is being demolished, as well (but you'll hardly notice that it's missing).

Ground was recently broken on the 222 South Main st. Tower (21 stories), and I have heard of at least two possible new tallests for Salt Lake, in the early planing stages.
So maybe Salt Lake's skyline will finaly see some growth after nearly a decade.

I give it a 3/10 since the skyline is flat and uninteresting. Spokane and Tacoma, WA may not compete, however Bellevue still looks better and has more potential. And if we are going to talk about cities in Washington State, Seattle blows Salt Lake City away.

lol, that's cuz none of you ppl on here seem to have any idea of what's going on in Salt Lake.......
btw, those pictures suck... haha, SLC is way under represented in those pic's

Yes there is currently a lot of construction going on in downtown. The City Creek Center is bringing a new tallest to the city, and there is 222S, a new highrise at the south end of the skyline...... and, there is more where that came from.
