uewepuep January 17th, 2005, 12:50 AM Great shots :) Very sharp.
invincible January 17th, 2005, 04:59 AM Nice, but using a better resizing algorithm would make them even nicer. :)
CULWULLA January 17th, 2005, 05:32 AM very well taken. love Collins st
Muse January 17th, 2005, 05:33 AM Great shots :) Very sharp.
:okay:
I'm sure invincible had good intentions about his advice quote: "Nice, but using a better resizing algorithm would make them even nicer. :) "

The Collector January 17th, 2005, 07:27 AM Thanks all for the positive comments. :)
Resizing will improve in future and as for too much detail,
well we are talking about Collins Street and its Boomstyle buildings!
Nothing more to say.
SinCity January 18th, 2005, 01:01 AM Man I miss Melbourne. Its time to return. These pics of Collins Street show the cities class.
Hacksaw January 18th, 2005, 01:46 AM Top pics Collector, truly captured the essence of Collins Street.
On a side note, whatever happened to the selling of 171 Collins Street and the approved permit of a 22 story residential, office and retail development on the site?
Blabbyboy January 18th, 2005, 05:24 AM please delete, double posted :runaway:
Blabbyboy January 18th, 2005, 05:25 AM only suggestion that i have is that 120 collins should be shot with st michael's church in the foreground, not scot's church. call me a snob, but i'm a purist! :D
The Collector January 18th, 2005, 06:08 AM only suggestion that i have is that 120 collins should be shot with st michael's church in the foreground, not scot's church. call me a snob, but i'm a purist! :D
I tried that shot, but the angle to get St Michael's in prevented the tower on 120 Collins Street from being visible, while the shot that you see shows both Scot's church spire and 120 Collins tower together. :)
In my opinion, the better shot.
Grollo January 18th, 2005, 08:02 AM The Paris end has never looked so French with those slick CITADIS trams :-)

tayser May 3rd, 2005, 10:13 AM holy frak, how'd you swindle the shots inside the bank????????
I've tried once, almost had myself escorted out!
maybach May 3rd, 2005, 10:54 AM Fantabulous Collector! Look forward to more. 333 Collins St maybe?
Dean May 3rd, 2005, 12:31 PM Although the Colonial Mutal Life building a few doors down from the ASX was a very sad loss and considered to most amazing building of it's time, IMO this building is the most ornate ever constructed in Australia. It was basically a 'Get Fucked' statement saying 'we got all the money'. The price in 1890 was around 300,000 pounds to construct, fucking lunicy basically in today's money for a 7 storey tower.
There was a story i heard that so much gold leaf was used on the interiores that the powers that be in Britain, actually sailed over to inspect the building to see where the hell all the damn money was going.
Perhaps after the Royal Exhibition Building, it's a building i could look at all day.
Great Pics.
Cheers

tayser May 3rd, 2005, 12:51 PM The old stock exchange or ES&A (ANZ)?
Tony P May 3rd, 2005, 02:58 PM Wonderful photos. Thanks Collector. :)
Dean May 4th, 2005, 02:55 AM The old stock exchange or ES&A (ANZ)?
It's the same building. Walk in from collins street and straight up the stairs to enter the old trading floor or turn left up the stairs to the banking chambers.
Modifications to William Pitt's original design were made in the 1920's, who designed this building as well as the Melbourne Safe Deposit (1890) which was built at the same time and joins onto the back of the old ASX.
The old trading floor looks like St Pats cathedral, which the huge arches and giant columns. bloody awesome really. Opulance to the max.
You can see that Pitt's high rise designs from the time where no level looks the same as the one below or above.
Look at the Safe Deposit, Rialto, and Olderfleet building's which he designed to see what i mean.
Cheers

The Collector May 4th, 2005, 03:08 AM holy frak, how'd you swindle the shots inside the bank????????
I've tried once, almost had myself escorted out!
I walked in, took the shots and
walked straight back out again.
No one tried to stop me. :)
Maybe you just look a bit shifty tayser. :sly:
By the way Dean, I once was given a guided tour upstairs in the old ES & A bank,
where I was shown the residence of the former manager that had walls all lined with elephant hide.
That is what I call opulence!
CULWULLA May 4th, 2005, 03:26 AM yeah, luv the stock exchange. the lookout tower risies to 49m.

I've never actually seen these before, were they from a book, and if so which one?
Just a note, it would have been more appropriate to have them posted in the Historic Collins Street in B & W (pg2) thread in this section instead.
Great finds, nevertheless.
p.s. Sad to have lost all of those great buildings. :(

The Georges Building.
Georges was known as the ‘smallest department store’, or ‘the biggest little store’, or even ‘the biggest boutique’.
Sadly the store closed down in the early 1990s and made a brief comeback again in 1998 only to close down again a few years later.

The first thing, I think, that strikes a man who knows the three great modern cities of the world –London, Paris, New York –
and is walking observingly about Melbourne is that Melbourne is made up of curious elements.
There is something of London in her, something of Paris, something of New York, and something of her own.

redbaron_012 March 30th, 2007, 07:22 AM Hey a little trivia.....When Collins Place was first built the hotel was run by Qantas and called Wentworth Melbourne....with a WM stylised insignia....soon it became The Regent for many years and underwent refurbishment..and later managment by Accor as the Sofitel which is still is...there have been a number of extensive refurbishments....ripping out walls and floors, cladings, surface finishes, adding and taking away small areas on the 35th. floor...Le Restaurant gone.etc..etc..but on the ground floor lifts the brass facings are the only thing left dating back to the Wentworth...The last update completely redid the internals but the external facings remain as day one! each still with that hotels insigna WM emblazoned in a repeatative pattern on all lifts. Most people probably don't see the motifs but just a pattern.

Cinerama ( a forerunner to imax) at the Plaza Theatre as well!
redbaron_012 April 1st, 2007, 02:18 AM many older pics show Neon signs.Back in the late 60's neon signs started to be replaced by box signs, plastic fronts illuminated from within by florescent tubes.....which were very bland compared to neon or bulbs, yet probably more efficient and cheaper to make and run.
shooter April 3rd, 2007, 06:45 AM Collector, where did you get all of these amazing color late 50's early 60's pics?? They are great quality and show things that I have never seen in color....like the CML building, wow!!
The Collector April 3rd, 2007, 08:09 AM ^^ Pics were scanned from Trams and Streetscapes, Metropolitan Melbourne 1950s-1960s and More Trams and Streetscapes, Metropolitan Melbourne 1950s-1960s.

Yardmaster April 4th, 2007, 09:36 AM Now..now Collector you know in 2007 you call them small lights.
Are you having me on? Can't they be "twinkle lights" if "fairy" isn't PC ?
redbaron_012 April 6th, 2007, 05:02 AM heeee hee !
city_thing April 6th, 2007, 06:29 AM Does Collins street still have the fairy lights? That would look really cool.
redbaron_012 April 7th, 2007, 04:13 AM I think the problem with lights in the trees is over time the globes blow out and its quite a job to keep it looking in good condition. Years ago the Regent Hotel ( Now Sofitel) forecourt had a circle of trees ( figs ) with massed lights wound right up through branches from the base of the trunks. Thousands of Tourists must have had their pic taken in front of them. After many years if you looked close over half of the globes weren't working till finally they removed them and painted the trunks blue ???......Blue being Sofitel corporate colour and as alternative for the artist ? who wanted to paint trees near the MCG.
