"MEssage: Tsunami hit almost 6 country, and the
biggest hit
is in ACEH. Many
Chinese
also living in there, so many of their family, relative
are killed by
the
tsunami.
But the saddest thing is even this thing happen to
anybody without
seeing
any race,religion and position, CHINESE
INdonesia in ACEH still faces a
discrimination.

This is a couple story that you guys can check in
camp camp in MEDAN,
Capital of North Sumatera (most of them stay in
JALAN METAL )
- When the aid is coming, especially the water,
which is very important
for
everbody, and one chinese follow the que and ask
for the water for
drink,
and the army stand up and said to chinese that if
they want to drink
this
water, they must PAY Rp.7500 (around US$0.80
cent) to able drink that
water.
The army/volunteer(i am not sure) said this AID is
only for PRIBUMI
(Malays)
not for others (include CHinese even they born
and live in there for
many
years).

- Chinese Indonesia in ACEH must pay around
Rp.8 million - 10 million
(US$1000) to the hospital to able to take their
family or relative dead
body.

- The Chinese house get looted (if food stores, we
can understand,
because
they hungry, but this is electronic stores, and the
strange thing is
ONLY
CHINESE Stores has been looted)

- Chinese house has been burned if the house
can still stand in the
ground.
They said "My house is gone, and now YOUR
house (CHINESE) must be gone
as
well)

- SOme reported (not sure whether is right or not)
the chiense girl has
been
rapes in there.

- The Hercules plane only take MALAY people
(Chinease are not allowed)
They
can move to Medan (Capital of North Sumatera)
because one of the
wealthly
man in Medan give everysingle chinese flight
ticket from ACEH to MEDAN.
Still many chinese TRAP in ACEH without food
and drink.

Can you imagine, Chinese also lost everythin,
they have no money, how
and
how they also must pay for the drink and the
food???????? I Hope
volunteer
from CHINA / Taiwan / SIngapore (Huaren
Volunteer) should help our
people in
there.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – In some refugee camps in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces, aid and rescue workers are believed to discriminate against Sino-Indonesians, who are denied food and medicines, forced to dig graves, robbed and, in some cases, killed. These information have been spread through short message service SMS. Benny G. Setiono, chairman of the Indonesian Chinese Association (INTI) published a statement quoting some messages and trying to appease their effect.

Some messages claim that some Sino-Indonesians are not allowed to board flights to Medan or safer areas away from Banda Aceh; others say that they are being made a scapegoat for the tsunami.

In the statement sent via e-mail, Mr Setiono urges Indonesians “not to be influenced” by the sectarian campaign that a handful of unknown individuals are waging for political gain.

Reporting that INTI volunteers working in refugee camps in Aceh and North Sumatra had witnessed minor incidents of discrimination, Mr Sentiono noted that they are to be expected given the extraordinary and desperate situation.

“For us,” he added, “these things are morally acceptable since both ethnic Chinese and Acehnese have had the same experiences, i.e. shortages of food and medical supplies and rescue workers too hard pressed to bring humanitarian aid”.

Sino-Indonesians are discriminated and robbed because locals think they are the wealthier part of the population. Even though they, too, were affected by the tsunami, they are thought to have been luckier.

To make his point, INTI’s president reports a case of discrimination: a Chinese family was told to pay 400 rupiahs (US$ 44) to have the body of one of its members removed by public transit motorbike.

Similarly, some Sino-Indonesians fleeing Banda Aceh by plane were forced to pay higher prices for their tickets to strangers who are profiting of the situation to make money.

However, Sino-Indonesians have not been the only victims of extortions; rich Achenese have been as well.

To counter the anti-Chinese campaign, INTI is setting up a centre in Medan to collect information about discrimination and relay it to the public and the media. (MH)

There are already a couple of threads relating to the Tsunami disaster. This would best be posted into one of the existing discussions.

I worked as a volunteer in Aceh and That news is very untrue. the chinese Indonesian in aceh has been taking care by MER-C and The red cross of taiwan and Indonesia. INTI has been setting up so many camps in the medan capital. but NONE in aceh. And the stores that robbed were not only chinese stores, 147 stores are robbed by the hungry mobs and 77% of them are owned by the local muslim community. the worst market robbed was i think indomart and something like gelael. But the TNI and brimob soon got them catched

Btw, that story was written in friendsters and email..rite?

I sure you, there is little discrimination there, since US, Australian and Singaporean forces are everywhere...not to mention the other foreign forces. One more thing, the reason why tickets was sold out, its not because the government forbid it. its just the demand is extremely high from Aceh to Medan, plus the two airports are overcapacity thus the tickets are over expensive.

About the house burned down, that is very funny. The only fire i saw is from the streets because they want to level the destruction area, moving it from the streets and area. Since its too many trash there, they decide to burn it. If there is house been burned down, the local metro tv xing wen (chinese indonesian news tv) will directly report it.

raped girl? forget it...its simple provocation, the only problem if there is baby and kids being trade for money there.

The aid and food/water arent for chinese? well blame the foreign forces, since the water and food distribution largely done by the American and Australian forces, since TNI doesnt have the capability to get clean water. so i simply says that rumor...nonsense.

cheers

Funny Sen, you didnt read that properly.

Read that carefully.

Similarly, some Sino-Indonesians fleeing Banda Aceh by plane were forced to pay higher prices for their tickets to strangers who are profiting of the situation to make money.

We called that CALO, not only the chinese but all acehnese and indonesian will have to counter that CALO (people who bought ticket and then sells it again with higher prices in order to get profit)

However, Sino-Indonesians have not been the only victims of extortions; rich Achenese have been as well.

Like what i said above. 77% of them are the locals that losing their stores.

Cheers

well i am relieved to hear this isn't the case...

i read this first in an international forum, and people are furious, and i saw this on the newspaper too, i was very mad since we all know what happened in 1998..

wont government deal with the CALO though? i mean government should provide transport for those people who want to leave aceh.

how is the situation now? it has been over 3 months now and i see many people have forgotten about it..you rarely have tsunami in news coverage anymore, in fact news about tsunami disappeared like 3 weeks after it happened..considering the scale of this tragedy...

anyways i hope everyone affected by the disaster will have a normal life ASAP.

cheers
