I'd move there in a heartbeat! I'm in love with the place. The only other city that has the sort of pull on me that Melbourne does is New York City. Just need to get some money behind me before I try move down hah.

I bet! I know it will be the best thing for me, I'm just so reluctant to make the change. Every thing I've done, I've done with my parents holding my hand, per se, and having to do any thing for myself scares the shit out of me. I'll get there, eventually! It's where I belong!

The best skyline in the entire Southern Hemisphere and I think the best skyline of any city on the planet in a city of less than 5 million.........near perfection.

The pictures makes me wonder now.. how big is the population of Melbourne?

It's a great looking city. .. and It definitely has that "big city" feel to it.

I think it's around 3.5/4 million these days and yes it's a fine city alright, but still has a somewhat provincial feel if you compare it to places with enormous infrastructue like London, New York , Paris or Tokyo

I think Melbourne passed 4 million, so it's about the size of Montreal. I wouldn't classify Melbourne as provincial at all. It's just smaller than those cities you listed; and it would likely rank higher on the human development index than all of those cities you listed. ;)

Yep, it's about 4.2 million and certainly doesn't compare to New York/Tokyo/London - nor does it try. While it doesn't have 'enormous' infrastructure, it has significant infrastructure for a city of its size (i.e. the worlds largest tram network, an extensive train network, well and truly adequate freeway/highway network, etc).

@wino: I can't say I get the comparison to Calgary's skyline, either, but each to their own. Visually, they are just two very different skylines - Calgary appears to be very new and glassy, and while densely populated with high-rises, it lacks the smaller 5-10 story ground cover Melbourne has. Melbourne is gloomy and dark, with a dip in the middle of the skyline to protect the historic vista, etc.

All that said, Melbourne will be virtually unrecognisable in 10 years anyway with 6 or so 200m+ buildings set to begin construction, and another 3-4 awaiting approval. Good times down there!
