Panorama of Melbourne from webcam on 101 Collin's spire (that's the one in middle of first night pic with one tiny blue light at top which is now floodlit brightly)
My ranking: 9/10 (includes bit of hometown bias) but will be higher by 2006 when there is a new tallest, smaller gap and possibly a new cluster of 200m+ towers at southbank.
EDIT (27/04/2008): Okay, it's been five and a half years since I wrote that post (I've also graduated from high school and am almost about to graduate from university in that time). Everything's become heaps better and I'd change my vote if I could. :)
chrisaus December 21st, 2002, 10:56 AM heigh- 9
density- 6
towers- 8
set up-8

Rainier Meadows December 21st, 2002, 09:42 PM Excellent city - Clustering could be better - 7/10
SluuugRadio December 24th, 2002, 10:07 PM I hate the angle which shows the big gap, but it looks great from every other angle. 7
SUNNI December 25th, 2002, 02:00 AM 8, nice city, but im still waiting for all the constructions to finnish.
Canuck December 26th, 2002, 06:22 PM Great skyline, good looking individual buildings (though those ones with the silly spires still are annoying to look at).
Does Australia proud - 8.5
Dean December 27th, 2002, 12:49 AM The majority of votes cast are between 8.5-10/10.
Right! So which fools voted less than 4. Please..., if Melbourne is less than four the majority of other cities around the world would get a negative score...hardly! :)
Cheers

SteelCity32 December 27th, 2002, 02:55 AM dean, none of your photos work.

Noonos January 5th, 2003, 05:57 AM whats with the seperate clusters? you got the rialto clster then a gap bigger then amarus eego then another cluster. sydney has it pretty much on constant..

aussie man January 8th, 2003, 01:41 PM Fantastic pictures guys!!!!
As most of you know I'm a HUGE fan of the Melbourne skyline. It has fantastic height, beautiful individual buildings, relatively good density, and a GREAT lay out.
10/10.
Thanx guys,
MAtt:)
Duff January 10th, 2003, 09:13 PM the skylines better than a lot of those pics show, you have to see it in real life!
Lizardman January 21st, 2003, 08:05 AM Vali, vali, vali classic City, simply stunning and elegent.
A Beastie 9.25/10 from me.;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
proudmelbourneguy January 23rd, 2003, 08:08 AM 10 of course:D what else was I gong rate it lol
Muse February 2nd, 2003, 02:57 PM This is one helluva stylish city. I never get tired of Melbourne's skyline.
9.5 due to waiting for its new major projects to be completed.
kiku99 February 2nd, 2003, 07:41 PM nice and dense. Skyscrapers seem to be taller than ones in Sydney.
but Sdyney skyline is more organized.
DrDan February 6th, 2003, 07:17 AM They are taller than the ones in Sydney. Melbourne currently has Australia's tallest building, the Rialto, at 251m and Eureka tower, to be finished in 2005, will overtake that at 297m to roof.
It's a nice looking skyline and is less dense than Sydney because the CBD is more spread out and is a grid-formation, meaning that the skyscrapers can't get too close to each other. This will obviously be less obvious once the many buildings currently under construction are finished within the next few years. We have a lot of talls to come!
renell February 6th, 2003, 08:24 AM density.... not that dense, but dense enough. some few talls sticking out from the others.. great. 7.5
kasperluke February 11th, 2003, 07:39 AM Pretty good skyline.. I think many people underate it... like any skyline looks great some angles and you have to be there to see it the best! It will look great with the 4 x 500 ft buildings at southbank going up in the next couple of year!
http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/lukekasper/skyline%20south.jpg
schmidt February 11th, 2003, 08:41 AM Good height, lacks density tho...
I'd give a 9.5, but I think there is no 9,5 :(
mystad February 11th, 2003, 05:53 PM Well I thought Sydney was nice, then I saw Melbourne...
MG2 February 18th, 2003, 02:48 PM That pic shows just how dense the downtown area can look... I love this skyline, one of the best in the world!
And it's only going to get better... I'm pleasently suprised at the review Melbourne has been getting from everyone on here, we have some smart people combing these forums :) And a resounding message from people is that it is a very classy stylish skyline... couldn't be more correct :)
MG2
Dean February 21st, 2003, 08:13 AM Anyways, as for my vote. A nice 7.5
oh well! You can't please everyone.
Along with a handful of other cities in asia, this is one major city skyline which will have huge changes in both height and volume by 2006.
The amount of signature towers on prime real estate either UC or approved is at levels almost never seen in our country b4.
All for the better, i say
Cheers
Dean - Melbourne
MG2 February 23rd, 2003, 02:11 PM I'd just like to ask what's not dense about that first pic?
They are great shots!

uewepuep April 14th, 2003, 04:11 PM Check out my new website (http://pants.gotdns.org/scrapers/) on Melbournes skyline.
I've never really seen any skylines besides Melbourne and Sydney. But based on photos I give it a 8 or so. But I wouldn't give any city a 10 =)
BGT April 16th, 2003, 12:36 AM 8.5/10
TropicalSQ744 April 20th, 2003, 09:25 PM Definately one of the best skylines in the world! It's got nice buildings and tall buildings!! :D I love the evening pic of the lighted offices! Really niceee
9/10
kozel April 23rd, 2003, 11:01 AM uewepuep,
you've one great web site there. Beautiful Melbourne street pics. Thanks for that.
weirdo April 30th, 2003, 08:27 PM i like the skyline. 8.5/10
skiesthelimit April 30th, 2003, 09:27 PM 8.5 for the current skyline.
Give it a few years with the Southbank and Docklands towers and it'll be worth a 9.5.
Wu-Gambino May 4th, 2003, 09:22 PM 9/10

fox1 July 1st, 2003, 09:34 AM melbourne is superb. in some places i wasn't particularly impressed with some, i emphasise some, angles such as from across the Yarra at southbank, but in general it is a very impressive, classy, stylish, urban, historical, imposing skyline and city. some parts of the city rival barcelona for urbanity and density and atmosphere.
8.5
Richo August 4th, 2003, 01:33 PM My home town and I think that it would be fair to say that any one who currently rates this skyline below a 7.5 needs their eyes checked.
Currently, I rate it about 8 (on the world stage) but when Eureka @ 298m, Prima @ 218m, Freshwater Place (3 x towers) @ 203m, 165m and 155m plus the rest (SX, HWT, Urban Workshop, Verve 501 - all above 500 feet, not to mention numerous other Docklands projects, this skyline (in about two years) will rock and rate, somewhere around 9 - 9.5.
At that time, with the exception of New York and Chicago, who I rate above all other North American skylines and Sydney - the best looking harbor city in the world, Melbourne's skyline will be sensational.
Labrador August 4th, 2003, 05:57 PM 9/10
Melbourne has a world-class skyline and I like it very much. :)
@Richo, although Melbourne has a great skyline, it is unfair to say anyone who votes under 7.5 needs their eyes checked, because everyone's free to have their own opinions of the place.
Javier August 4th, 2003, 05:58 PM Damn!, how i like Melbourne 9/10
chrisaus August 5th, 2003, 01:41 PM It can look very ugly from some angles, but the postcard night views deserve the top level votes!
Jai Hind August 7th, 2003, 05:05 PM I think it really depends upon the angle from which you view the skyline. From certain angles there appears to be nice depth and organisation of buildings, deserved of 9/10.
From other angles, there are gaps and a lack of continuity, i would give it 7.5 - but hopefully this will be rectified by 2005-6, once the new towers are complete:)
massiveattack August 8th, 2003, 02:36 AM melbourne sounds so elegant
the skyline is great and modern
eureka is an odd but nice building
i would rather live in melbourne than in sydney because of the weather, melbourne is colder and it sure has some winter season, though sydney is also beautiful
i have many things to say about melbourne, gosh, beatiful and most of all it sound very elegant, melbourne
cheers from bolivia aussies
Julz August 17th, 2003, 03:21 PM Love the skyline will only get better as the years go on,
8.5 now
9.5 when all the towers currently UC are completed
a very elegant city
Fabio August 19th, 2003, 07:17 AM 9.5/10
I love it.
MG2 August 24th, 2003, 06:14 PM What a great pic that last one was....
It's fantastic that people are finally seeing Melbourne for what it is; a strinkingly modern yet historic city, a classy sophisticated and stylish city and a great skyline to boot.
Fantastic reviews :) *feels all warm inside. Proud of Melbourne*

huaiwei September 3rd, 2003, 04:44 PM 8.5/10. Not bad indeed! ;)
Peter The Great October 6th, 2003, 02:01 AM The majority of the architecture in Sydney and Melbourne is hideous! I'll give Melbourne a 6/10 however just for height and having a dense cluster. As a whole the Melbourne skyline is pleasing to look at but looking closely at the individual buildings gives one an eye sore.
Tom1968 October 9th, 2003, 01:04 PM 8 for Melborne.
SoboleuS October 10th, 2003, 08:16 PM Really good skyline, almost as good as Sydney's ;) 9/10
SimpleSimon October 11th, 2003, 06:15 AM nine of ten
Melbourne = little New York
Trances October 22nd, 2003, 05:30 AM Melbourne not top ten sorry
But still a respectable city sky line.
But with these polls I tend to ignore scores under 3 as it just people trying to pull down the average and post their own rank or people doing it out of spite.
FloTownballer November 1st, 2003, 06:39 AM 9/10
Cardpooch November 3rd, 2003, 09:28 PM Great skyline but it wouldn't make my top 10 list .
8/10
baqthier December 4th, 2003, 08:33 AM I'm impressed with the Melbourne skyline! Just beautiful like Houston's:angel1:
9.5/10
Weerez December 23rd, 2003, 03:36 PM 8.5/10 and Handsome!
OzAsian January 16th, 2004, 10:50 AM Melbourne is one good looking city.9.5 Should be even better in a couple of years time when all those new projects are finished.
TYW February 7th, 2004, 05:18 PM 9/10
ScorpianSoul February 26th, 2004, 09:04 PM it's an ok place but it gets boring after awhile and it lacks character and history and it's missing the vibe with many cities have. i give it 5/10
Schroedinger's Cat March 14th, 2004, 06:44 PM 10/10
I love it !
:baaa: :baaa:
Necker March 22nd, 2004, 01:29 PM 9.5
SpatulaCity March 23rd, 2004, 01:58 AM Very nice. Decent density, decent height - it's not one of the 10 best (as someone mentioned earlier) though but it's certainly up there. Don't worry about those morons who voted so low - probably some frustrated preteen. I like it much better during the day than night. The Rialto is quite nice. I like the way that it seems to change colours at certain times of the day. I'm not too crazy about Eureka(?). The bands around it remind me of a giant thermometer or syringe. I also don't like the top.
Overall, I'd give it a 8.5.
Darkknight April 5th, 2004, 11:05 PM ill give it an 8. of course i am biased i live here!!!!! :drunk: :)
skylover May 6th, 2004, 08:57 PM Good.
8/10
rayman May 6th, 2004, 10:10 PM i voted 5 , i think it is flat and boring haha kidding
I vote 8 out of 10 ;) nice skyline
MightyBoy May 7th, 2004, 12:36 PM 7.1
Nice skyline but not tall enough...
MG2 May 22nd, 2004, 02:14 PM Nice pics... :D
The Messiah June 9th, 2004, 11:55 AM I just don't know if i have to rate it higher then 8.5/10...........naaaaaaaaah ;)
Shuzstar June 14th, 2004, 06:35 AM Melbourne is the 'Mecca' of all the cities in the world. I've only been 3 times, but is so spectacular and impressivemy eyes just bawled out.
Looks vibrant and cool. However would look ultra-cool if all the buildings that were never built here (look at www.ss.com on the melbourne page)
Yardmaster June 17th, 2004, 04:30 PM Yes, but what about all the great Melbourne buildings that were built & then Demolished? (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=110934) (Culwalla's post #4 here is my favourite).
Yardmaster June 17th, 2004, 04:58 PM This place rocks!

Melbourneguy June 20th, 2004, 02:56 AM Having visited a number of world class cities in my time I can truly say that although Melbourne doesn't have the impact that New York or Chicago has, for its size it has a damn fine skyline. Remember it only has a population of around 3.6mill compared other mega cities. I rated it at 8.5.
Bronteboy June 23rd, 2004, 05:55 PM Hometown, but lived in a lot of other cities too, and have voted higher for one outstanding, much smaller civic in another country - so not just ranking predictable giants automatically. That said, melb is a pretty terrific skyline, a mature city in every way, and rapidly getting even better. Its climatic detractions (which i disagree with anyway) have produced immense cultural compensations. 9 for now.
Rickster885 July 7th, 2004, 10:06 AM The only cool thing about this city is its built up skyline. There are a lot of tall buildings but other than that there is nothing that stands out so I give it a 6.5/10.
pinoy_ako August 1st, 2004, 11:24 AM Nice city...but needs more skyscrapers to increase skyline rank.
Flatiron August 1st, 2004, 08:22 PM A nice skyline and one of the more interesting "gridded" cities in the world...
But it seems to lack the monumental character of older North American skylines. And those two ticky-tacky fake-deco things were a mistake...
7.5/10
Jules August 1st, 2004, 08:31 PM I don't like it very much. 4.5.
Shuzstar August 6th, 2004, 11:46 AM well i still love melbourne, and there are so many fucking cranes! in any skyline i see, when i see more cranes i see a better city so melbourne definelty wins. 10/10.
Dean August 6th, 2004, 02:41 PM A nice skyline and one of the more interesting "gridded" cities in the world...
But it seems to lack the monumental character of older North American skylines. And those two ticky-tacky fake-deco things were a mistake...
7.5/10
When u first arrived here u seemed like a bright bloke... however, it seems ur really just a dickhead in disguise. NA has only two skylines of 'monumental character' and the rest are just 'try hards'.
Your comments are intersting in that u vail the praise very nicely in amogst all the shit talking and bagging, to try and make u look diplomatic, however it only highlights the fact that yr a complete tosser.

Honestly... now pushing almost half the total votes for this great city are now at 4/10 or lower. the jealousy of some people is amazing.

7.5/10
and apart from NYC and chicago..would you mind telling me what other NA cities have monumental character? Blackpool has more charcter than most NA cities.
chrisaus August 6th, 2004, 04:02 PM the angle does a heap ie. some angles make melbourne's skyline look really shit and ugly others are very spine tingling :D
Blend August 6th, 2004, 04:33 PM ^^^ thats much the same as most every city anywhere
digili_man August 6th, 2004, 07:50 PM From those pictures, Melbourne seems very Liveable and nice.
marcos/Brasília August 8th, 2004, 08:48 PM :) :) :) I'm suspect to vote here. Despite I've never been to Melbourne before, I'm faithfull dedicated to only three cities in this planet: Los Angeles, Belo Horizonte (where I was born) and, of course Melbourne. And Melbourne skyline is simply impressive! 10!10!10! :) :) :) :)    :nocrook: :applause:
Flatiron August 10th, 2004, 07:46 PM Dean, what I mean by "monumental character" is that the city early on acquired some monumental structure which then provided a focus for later development. For example Philadelphia's magnificent city hall dominated the skyline--by law--for almost 75 years. The CN Tower in Toronto and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis provide, respectively, a dramatic focal point for Toronto and a literal "frame" for views of St. Louis. Melbourne lacks this aesthetic centrality.
Nevertheless, I gave Melbourne an 8/10 if memory serves correctly.
I have been able, for the most part, to keep personal remarks out of my opinions.
AtlanticaC5 August 10th, 2004, 08:28 PM 8/10 Nice skyline with all those spires, Rialto looks great too
Flatiron August 13th, 2004, 02:56 AM Oops! I guess I gave it a 7.5/10. Still, not a bad grade in my book.
Osborne August 15th, 2004, 11:32 AM One of the best aspeccts of the Melbourne skyline is most apparent when standing in the heart of the city - so many classic Victorian buildings with their neo-classical details, juxtaposed with minimal and post-modern skyscrapers as their backdrops. On a sunny morning, look up to the sky on Collins Street and marvel at human progress...
wajz August 24th, 2004, 12:41 AM I always think Melbourne looks at its most stunning seen from St.Kilda... followed by the beautiful view along the Yarra from South Bank. What I also love about Melbourne is the fact that it draws the eye no matter from where you approach it. There is something truly magnetic about that city.
Bronteboy September 5th, 2004, 08:22 AM here are a few shots of melbourne, currently ranked 169th on the skyscraper poll, behind many much smaller cities with relatively bare skylines! Ditto for the other main Australian skyline cities - see Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth listings and images, for example. It all makes great and informative viewing, but as a skyline poll the exercise has completely lost credibility Down Under: what are these large number of 3-4 votes about? very smelly

Jeeeb September 11th, 2004, 03:20 AM 10/10 - If enought people vote high then we can get it back up into its deserved place.
BTW> Would be easy to fix the problems with the voting system -
Firstly set a minimum post count before someone can vote.
Secondly disgard any vote under 3 for all cities. (As of now, that way you see a much more fair and balanced view of current votes).
And finally make it public who voted and what they voted.

9/10
MG2 October 8th, 2004, 07:37 AM Rialto Towres is 253m
If you are talking about the tall one with two spires that you can see from some of the pictures taken from the Rialto ob deck that is Melbourne Central at 211m to roof. Pretty sure that's right.
MG2
Blend October 8th, 2004, 08:52 AM Rialto is not 253m. It is 251.4m
Thonix October 11th, 2004, 11:07 PM Melbourne is definitely Australia's version of New York! Loved it. Didn't see many white ppl in the CBD lol, loved St. Kilda.
Wezza October 12th, 2004, 02:41 PM Nice skyline, just needs more density. I guess that will be coming soon though.
Thonix October 12th, 2004, 02:45 PM Melbourne is very dense! Looking down from the Rialto, it has soo many mid-sized buildings/apartments, they are pretty old and some even had tennis courts on the roof.
Wezza October 12th, 2004, 03:01 PM I've never really thought of the Melbourne CBD to be very dense. Plenty of scrapers, plenty of height, but also very spread out. When you view a picture of the skyline from some angles, it seems to have holes that need filling. Looks as though there is plenty planned for Melbourne though, so maybe these holes will fill soon.

Tri-City Guy October 27th, 2004, 07:06 AM Melbourne's has Australia best skyline without a doubt and probably at the bottom of the top ten worldwide in my honest opinion. It truely is the Chicago of the Southern Hemisphere. Sydney, you've got your harbor sure but your second when it comes to style and skyline. Melbourne is both classic and daring. Love that mix and the fact that it has a long yet still dense skyline, and not all grouped together like Toronto but placed out to show off. Its built to look number 1.

MELBOURNE KICKS ASS!!!
sean storm November 23rd, 2004, 08:35 PM the skyline will be much better w/ eureka topping off.... but for now, it's got some punctuation but nothing truly stands out architecturally. the clustering is a bit off.

VAN-TO November 28th, 2004, 09:56 AM Nice balanced skyline, but I'm not particulary fond of some of the buildings. 8/10
Eureka & Freshwater place will be great additions.

Eureka will be a nice addition. When thats completed- 8.0/8.5.
A little overboard with buildings with unattractive massive spires/antennas though.
Tri-City Guy November 29th, 2004, 02:12 AM The City of Spires. Melbourne has a fantastic skyline and its not all clustered in one spot like other cities. Its like several skylines in one, East End, Middle and West End. Also, the way Docklands and Southbank are coming alone they might challenge the CBD in the future. There is so much happening down there in the Garden City.
Hacksaw December 3rd, 2004, 02:21 PM Love those shots sakor1, really shows the length of the skyline.

As one can see, Eureka and Freshwater Place are growing and starting to make a good impact on the skyline.
Per December 3rd, 2004, 03:01 PM The Australian cities are the examples in the world. Australia doesn't need highrise so much, plenty of space there. But for city image building these beautiful skylines are top! Sydney is marvelous but I love Melbourne even more, especially the way they integrate highrise within the city's 19th and early 20th century centers. A 10 for Melbourne!!!
THT-United December 8th, 2004, 02:09 PM Its good that Melb is getting new and dramatic skyscrapers like Eureka and Freshwater into the skyline...
The present one with Rialto, BlueScope, Melb Central, Bourke Place etc is getting a little drab and boring... Yeah, the buildings are well-designed but heck, they have been around (and are still among the tallest) since 1991! Changes are needed, man!
I come from Petaling Jaya in Malaysia (just outside KL) and the skyline changes many times within the year... For instance, a new 17-storey building that was not even in the piling stage in late 2003 was completed this year...
i_am_hydrogen January 6th, 2005, 09:03 AM 9.5/10 - Melbourne's skyline is absolutely incredible. It has a little futuristic, glassy kick to it. In its silhouette form it resembles Chicago. It's so well cut out. I can't understand why this skyline is rated so low on the list. It completely surpasses so many of the skylines ranked above it--should be in the top 15 in the world. Aussies do a great job with their skylines. Sydney and Perth are also really nice. This skyline just gets to me--it's dope!

Beacon May 31st, 2005, 06:12 AM In Melbourne, the good is very good, and the bad is very bad!
The city is blessed with a number of far-sighted architectural firms and one particularly enthusiastic developer, which means that much of the city's recent contrsuction has been interesting and grandiose.
However, so much of the CBD's beautiful old buildings were torn down in the fifties, sixties and seventies, and replaced with some truly attrocious eyesores. Bland boxes in drab colours, with no detail or subtlety at all. To ride a tram along Collins street would break your heart, where the stunning old Victorian masterpieces juxtapose with the post-modern monstrosities.
Since 1985, things have been much better, and if I could go back and change the past, I would have had no construction in Melbourne between 1940 and 1985. Then the city would be spectacular today! Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
sean storm May 31st, 2005, 08:01 AM this city is interesting.... the skyline is large, and quite impressive from a statistical point of view. there are some nice bldgs, esp. with the new eureka tower. but somehow, it just doesn't really wow me. none of the buildlings truly stand out in landmark fashion, and unless you're really into skylines it is basically nondescript.
it's a good skyline considering all things, but it's just not an iconic skyline.
Icanseeformiles May 31st, 2005, 09:52 AM Melbourne has long ago shaken off it's drab public image. IMHO there should only be the stunning Victorian era buildings that remain and the sleek and sexy 1985 onwards buildings.
We still have too many 1970's architectural horrors but I'm sure the bulk of them will either be knocked down or refurbished in the years to come.
A livable, intimate, classy, safe, friendly and beautiful city.
I've lived in several major cities but the lifestyle of Melbourne beats every city in Australia hands down. (incidently I am from N.S.W. not Victoria)
Generally photos do not do the city justice...you need to be there.

centralized pandemonium June 9th, 2005, 04:53 PM A beautiful city, 9.
Beacon June 16th, 2005, 09:12 AM I think that if a city has very tall buildings, it can really only look either North American or Asian. Nowhere else in the world has cities with their own architectural style, except maybe the Middle East. Melbourne's skyscraper boom started in the nineteen-eighties, when America was just about the only template for this kind of building, so obviously there are similarities. Melbourne certainly looks more like Chicago or Toronto than Hong Kong. I also don't want Melbourne to start building giant noodle boxes like in Taipei or Kuala Lumpur. We could take some tips from Dubai though.
PS I love the comment that Melbourne is not a good place. True, true - I'm moving to Karachi next week for quailty of life reasons... :runaway:

nerazzurri September 3rd, 2005, 10:17 AM I think the main reason why some people voted for a low score is because Melbourne's skyline kind of lacks any unique landmarks or buildings that really stand out. For example, Sydney has the bridge and the Opera House, Gold Coast has Q1, Perth has the beautiful Swan river, New York......well, because it's New York. But Melbourne doesn't really have anything in terms of 'unique' looking buildings or structures.
I personally think that in Australia, Melbourne's skyline is one of the most over-rated skylines. And Perth's is definitely the most under-rated.
Your from Perth
pali September 4th, 2005, 03:34 AM most of the Australian cities have nice skylines :eek2:
and lots of new buildings.

SkyBoy September 4th, 2005, 02:19 PM LOL! First of all, I'm really amazed at how some people here are so sensitive, and overreacting towards individuals who have given a particular city's skyline a score of less than what they'd wanted. Haven't you people ever heard of freedom of expression? You have to recognise that we're all different individuals, and have our own likes and dislikes with regards to any matter or subject. Whether this may be movies, songs, celebrities, football teams or skylines, people are going to have differing opinions.
So what if people voted less than a 3 for Melbourne's skyline. Does it really offend you that much? Have you got nothing better else to do in your life than whinge and worry about what others think. I'm a Brisbanite, and if someone voted a 1 or even minus 1 billion for its skyline, I wouldn't give a shit. Because I respect others' opinions, and I have other things to worry about in my life than whinge about what others think. I even have respect for someone like Dean who even though didn't know me at all, called me a dickhead. Why?? Because I respect other people's opinion. :) So my advice: The day you stop worrying about what others think, you're going to be much more productive in your life, and your days are going to become much more meaningful.
btw- I voted a 7 for Melbourn's skyline. But with these whingers perceiving other's low rating of their 'beloved' city's skyline as some kind of blasphemy, I wish I had voted for a 1.
Also, if people are going to be so 'offended' at someone having voted less than a 3, then whoever started this thread should've put up scores of only more than 5 or something for its rating option.
wowsim September 5th, 2005, 09:36 AM What makes Melbourne's skyline so great is that its so wide and big.....unlike very two dimensional skylines like perth and the GC, you can literally get a completely different skyline depending on where you are in Melbourne. (not just the same buildings from a different angle). That said it does lack a building that screams for attention, but i think Eureka will change this.
LMCA1990 September 10th, 2005, 06:47 PM 10/10- melbourne is beautiful and it has an awesome skyline.

sakor1 October 13th, 2005, 03:28 PM From realestate.com.au (and posted originally by Aussie Steve), a nice recent one showing the Eastern quarter of the CBD with almost complete E&Y and UW towers (with another 500footer SX almost complete too... but obscured behind the Collins twins).

airmale007 November 26th, 2005, 11:16 PM This skyline reminds me a lot of Chicago...
not in architectural style necessarily, but in composition; the skyline is very visually pleasing; tall buildings are placed densely but not so densely that you cannot appreciate them individually. This has to be my favorite skyline outside of the United States.
ToRoNto, g-town November 27th, 2005, 11:55 PM 5/10 it reminds me alot of Montreals skyline and im not to fond of Montreals either...

Beacon November 29th, 2005, 07:41 AM I have voted in this poll a long time ago, but I think that the most objective rating for Melbourne, compared with other cities around the world would be 7.5-8. If Hong Kong and New York are 10s, and Chicago is a 9.5, then I would think that 8 is about right for Melbourne.
I certainly think that Melbourne and Sydney are a match for any city in the world outside East Asia and the US. I think they are both on a par with Toronto, being more distinctive and attractive, even if not taller than the Canadian city.
And Melbourne and Sydney both cream any other skyline in Australia, so don't give me any of this Brisbane/Perth bullshit. Those cities are flyspecks, and anyone that votes them higher is simply being dellusional. In fact, if you were to add Perth's skyline to Melbourne's, I don't think it would look much different to how it does now. What is there - one tall tower there?
Taller, Better November 29th, 2005, 08:33 AM I can imagine the good Member from Perth is imploding just about now... LOL!

Yes but the Perth skyline looks better. It is visually appealing. Whereas with Melbourne, all I see is a jumbled bunch of mish-mash. There is no good view of the Melbourne skyline, and it has no body of water to compliment the skyline. I think the Melbourne skyline is very overrated.
If we were rating individual buildings, then of course I would rate Melbourne higher. But when rating a skyline, you have to see how well everything blends together, and what the overall visual effect is.

sakor1 December 16th, 2005, 10:55 AM ^^^ Sorry mate. Perth is a great and beautiful city, don't get me wrong.... but Melbourne (skyline wise) shits on it in every way possible. The skyline works well and does blend in as a whole... but unlike perth it is a BIG skyline that is often not captured in its entirety as your posted pic above demonstrates (it is only the Western half of CBD.... without docklands, Eastern CBD, Southbank and St Kilda road skylines).
As for body of water, mate.... the yarra river splits the CBD and Southbank skylines straight through the middle... and Victoria harbour is the heart of the docklands precinct... you may not have seen much of it as at the moment the whole area is under development, but in the future you will be seeing it a lot more.
As the others have mentioned, Melbourne and Sydney at the moment are well in the lead from other Aussie cities.

PerthCity December 16th, 2005, 12:49 PM I dont know, I just find that the Melbourne skyline doesnt blend together as well as a city like Sydney or Perth has.
I guess for the true fan of big buildings and big American-style skylines, then Melbourne would be a favourite, but I just find Perth more visually appealing.
sakor1 December 18th, 2005, 06:44 AM It's personal preference I suppose and I can respect that.

musicqro March 17th, 2006, 06:22 AM I like the density, but the antennas in the top looks old
melicha March 24th, 2006, 04:41 PM The smaller buildings make it look a little too crowded, but that can be "fixed up" by larger skyscrapers in the future. All in all I'd give Melbourne a pretty little 8.5
Wonderful stuff
