Why can't we see how many forums ect we have on line anymore? Simple question for you mods and people that run the place.

Yes, so do I. It's good to know who's online, and how many people are in a particular forum/subforum.

Don't PM Jan people...

This will be worked out in time. I don't think folks quite understand how much this place has grown, and how the cost can seriously escalate. Doing things like shutting off this feature saves resources to be used for other things, like ensuring that we don't have to put a user limit on the forum. (meaning that once 'x' number of people were signed on, nobody else could get on unless someone left)

I WANT IT BACK TOO!!
FIRST OFF CAUSE IT WAS A NICE FUNCTION, SECOND BECAUSE SOMETIMES THE FORUM IS TOO MUCH SLOW LIKE IT WAS BEFORE.
I DON'T THINK TO SCRATCH OUT THAT CHANGED SOMETHING; IT AIN'T THE SOLUTION.
IF YOU BRING THE "OPTIONAL" BACK I CAN HELP YOU BY STOPPING CHECKING THE FORUM DURING A CERTAIN HOUR, ALLRIGHT? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I understand how it all works like severs, bandwidth ect. If costs get higher why doesnt the site have a donation feature? Am sure people would donate money to make the place better and run faster. Theres all sorts of other things the site could do to make abit of money.

Start a ssc.com webstore and have a donations page :P

or sell ad space.

seems most ppl want it back. I also want it back.

Donations page would be cool! Ranking forumers by $$$$! :D

If the site did have ad space, I would buy some and put my company on it.

^ that is a pretty good idea... well at least if we keep the advertising to Architecture or Skyscraper-related advetising.

Well my company doesn't have anything to do with Skyscrapers & I dont really know any companies to do with Skyscrapers and Architecture that would advertise on here(not just here I dont think that type of company puts much in to web advetising). Plus if you did that I wouldn't see as much money as you could.

i never mind banner ads

the only ads that bother me are floating ones and popups.

you guys are spoiled rotten here. I go to a forum where there's no moderation to keep nasties away, no post count, and certainly no 'who's online' or options, and yet there's never a problem although there are several hundred posts a day.
some features can be taken away and i garantee in a couple of weeks you'll all be used to it.

Ellatur

i don't like the add idea, and donations will certainly help boost the forum when adding some extra servers and all.
doesn't jan pay for EVERYTHING?

Yeah, what about setting up a PayPal account for donations?

I would give some euros for the cause. :)

Its all down to the main men now and if they have the time to do it and want to do it. We've said we'll give them money towards the site.

Malt

give people incentive to keep donating too. Have a status rank under ur name or something.. that entitles you to somehting or other.

It has nothing to do with the amount of space on the server or bandwidth (generally) I imagine the improvement in performance came from removing the amount of queries that the database has to perform EVERYTIME someone loads a page, now that it doesn't have to show who'sonline, who's browsing a thread, who's browsing a forum- etc- the page load time has certainly improved from my perspective.

Though I do wonder, even though it obviously hasn't been upgraded to 3.0.6, if this board is patched up with the necessary fixes to 3.0.6 standards? Some issues otherwise, I would hope it is.
