Orava castle (Oravsky hrad) is situated in northern Slovakia on the rockcliff near the river Orava, and in a region, which bears the name Orava as well, the construction of the castle, much like others in Slovakia was created on the site of old wooden forts. It soon became the administrative centre of the Orava region.

First written record is from 1267. Among the best known owners from the 13th to 19th centuries, besides of the kings, were count Donc, Matus Cak Trenciansky, Stibor of Stiboric, Jan of Dubovec amongst others. All of them more or less rebuilt the castle. Originally it was built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles and later altered in Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. It consists of several buildings copying the shape of the castle rock. In 1556 began one of the most extensive reconstruction and the castle got its present form in 1611.

In the Castle itself is the Orava Museum (Oravske muzeum ) with a numerous series of expositions.

I have wanted to own this castle ever since I found it was the one used for the 1922 film Nosferatu. BTW, I gave it a 10/10. 8 points on looks and the last two because of the history.
