Everglades Hotel to implode

Starting Sunday, a Miami landmark built in 1926 will turn - temporarily - to rubble.

On that day, at about 8 a.m., Cabi Developers is to implode the 17-story Everglades Hotel in downtown Miami to make way for a new, two-tower condominium.

The developer said 50 pounds of dynamite and 137 pounds of steel cutting charges will implode the Everglades Hotel, clearing land for Everglades on the Bay.

First responders are to take advantage of the blast, with a multi-agency emergency services training drill and a fire drill.

Also, rescue and hazardous materials teams, with South Florida Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) and the City of Miami Police Department, are to train in conditions made to simulate the World Trade Center disaster.

Due to safety precautions, the developer said various downtown roads will be blocked off starting at 7 a.m. the day of the implosion. At 7:30 a.m., the area is to be secured, with an implosion ceremony with the developer and city officials beginning 25 minutes later.

I've scouted and excellent location for viewing, it's the 4/5 story parking structure on the south side of the Everglades about one block in from Biscayne Blvd. You must use the south entrance when open, and tomorrow it wil be closed. I'm not saying that I'm breaking in or anything, and anyway, this might not be me typing note if this is ever introduced as evidence in a court of law. See you there gentleman, I'll be the guy yawning a lot, very tired and holding the digital camera making movies. You may also notice me because I'll be attempting to infiltrate every building to get some good movie angles! Hey, does Hooter's serve breakfast?

Well, goodbye Everglades Hotel and welcome to Everglades by the Bay!
I have many fond memories of the Everglades Hotel. From riding my bicycle downtown in the early 1960's and marveling at the TV antenna from Bayfront Park and Pier 5 to sneaking up to the tower in the early 1990's as an adult, I loved the old structure. I had many great meals in the restaurants through the years and celebrated a dear friend's wedding overlooking Biscayne Bay in the 1980's. My last time in the old building was a Sun Post Event at the sales center a few months ago. Good bye old friend, thanks for the memories and for standing so proudly in our Miami skyline for over 79 years. You've been a great part of our history, but now its time for a new generation of skyscrapers to take your place.

It was very interesting to watch how organized the demo crew, police, and clean up crews worked. And it was great to put the faces to the posts...next demolition, someone should rent a hotel room nearby and have a party...

Street (and everyone else who couldn't appear), you missed an amazing experience!

I met up with them by coincidence, because the police had already begun to barricade everything and direct everyone away by the time I got there. I was by American Airlines Arena and witnessed the implosion. Boom boom boom boom boom! Afterwards, I went upstairs to the roof of the Bayside parking garage to get a better look at the rubble, and low and behold, I see that bright neon green sign... Chuck is definitely quite a character, even more zealous, eccentric, and passionate in person. Roark has a great dry sense of humor.

Yeah as long as they keep building, It doesn't matter who finishes first. although I'm not a big fan of the 50 Biscayne design. I'm just glad they're building something to fill in those gaps in the skyline.

Nice pics tivo. I really thought about being there with you guys, but 8:00am on a Sunday is too early for me to be awake. I wish they would have been able to blow it up on New Year's Eve, like I've heard they wanted to, then I definitely would have been there! But now that I think about, it might have been more practical to do it early on a Sunday morning, just because you would have daylight and there would'nt be many people walking around at that time on a Sunday. From a public safety perspective, they picked a good time, but man imagine if this happened at midnight on January 1st, it would have been crazy!

I met up with them by coincidence, because the police had already begun to barricade everything and direct everyone away by the time I got there. I was by American Airlines Arena and witnessed the implosion. Boom boom boom boom boom! Afterwards, I went upstairs to the roof of the Bayside parking garage to get a better look at the rubble, and low and behold, I see that bright neon green sign... Chuck is definitely quite a character, even more zealous, eccentric, and passionate in person. Roark has a great dry sense of humor.

Usually an existing building is more than 7 or 8 floors for it to be imploded. The old everglades was I think about 17 floors, if I'm not mistaken. Remember that old building next to One Miami (I can't remember the name) on the river, that building was something like 8 or 9 floors, and it was demolished piece by piece instead of all at once. Of course, blowing up a building is much faster, but probably more expensive. It probably would make more sense economically to the develope if a building is tall for it to be imploded. I can't think of any tall old buildings (10+ floors) that would probably be imploded here in Miami anytime soon...

I went and watched it and have never heard anything like that before in my life. I parked at Collins and 95th, then walked up to 96th and watched it from there. And the next time there is supposedly an SSC implosion party, it certainly needs to be planned better than this one was.
