Irish Blood English Heart December 20th, 2002, 05:40 AM not bad, individually most the towers arent great but together the skyline looks ok, very typical for a N.American medium sized city 6/10
Pablo December 20th, 2002, 09:49 AM haha not bad although those buildings look plain but still looks OK---- their skyline;)
DrumCorpsAlum December 20th, 2002, 09:57 AM 7.5/10. Some nice structures there. 11 Evergreen Place(?) adds variety, due to its uniqueness. Especially in that aerial shot, the skyline is too spread out, with too many mid-rise boxes, rather than unique structures, of different colors, vareties, shapes, heights, etc, creating a dense cluster of buildings, and a focal point, much like Pittsburgh or Singapore for example. I see buildings spread out, rather than a single skyline. There are also no landmark structures which stand out. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice skyline. It's big, just not tall.
SeeMacau December 20th, 2002, 10:20 AM 7/10
A lot of skyscrapers but not tall
Winnipeg is near Arctic
De Snor December 20th, 2002, 10:25 AM Nothing spectacular but for it's size it's rather good ,a 7
giallo December 20th, 2002, 07:21 PM A few more "colourful" towers and Winnipeg could be something special. 7/10
Jeff from Winnipeg December 21st, 2002, 04:48 AM DrumCorps- that "unique" tower you're refering to is the TD Centre... I think that's the one you're refering to anyways.
About the signature tower issue- The head of CanWest Global Communications, Israel Asper, was once heard saying that when CanWest (one of Canada's largest media companies, based in Winnipeg) is in a better financial state, that they will build a new signature tower for the city. They are currently one of the major tenants in the TD Centre... Winnipeg's only real signature tower.
I'm hoping for better times for that company... if you get my drift
;)
And yes, Winnipeg is too boxy and spread out. But one major reason for it being so spread out is to preserve the city's really extensive stock of early 20th century architecture. I guess a reason for it being so boxy and plain is because this city grew tremendously during the 60's and 70's WHEN THE BOX WAS KING
I gave my hometown a 7/10.
breezyboy69 December 21st, 2002, 11:01 AM umm nice greenary :) 5/10
Kevinkhoo1986 December 22nd, 2002, 05:52 AM An ok city for a small population.. 6/10
Rainier Meadows December 22nd, 2002, 06:01 AM What a fun skyline........mini-Denver.......5.5/10
SUNNI December 26th, 2002, 03:51 AM quiet a few of em..

Jeff from Winnipeg December 26th, 2002, 07:18 AM Here's a pic that shows the entire downtown highrise area... and all the empty lots that still need to be filled in. Lots of potential :)
http://www.globalairphotos.com/images/mb/winnipeg/2002/wgh2002_120.jpg
mookiecece December 26th, 2002, 01:43 PM typical mid sized NA skyline.. really has some potential if it is growing at all..... 7/10
Jeff from Winnipeg December 31st, 2002, 08:03 AM :wtf: A 10? That was either a joke vote or a sympathy vote. Winnipeg does not deserve that in the least, but I'll take it and I thank whoever put that.
X-seed 4000 December 31st, 2002, 01:31 PM Pro: Density is Ok & It has some interesting towers.
Con: Low amount of Buildings, and the height is not good.
Overall: 6.0/10
CTroyMathis January 2nd, 2003, 04:59 AM I always found Winnipegged a wonderfully pleasant 'prairie surprise' in context to it's location - and, sudden eruption of somewhat vertical architecture and 'city' in the middle of a vast plain. I like it.
6.5.
Jeff from Winnipeg January 2nd, 2003, 06:49 AM In many tourist accounts (people that drove or took the train in) that I've heard over the years, the comparison to OZ has been mentionned quite often. It's just you're driving and driving with nothing around for miles and miles and then, BOOM! a sizeable city in the middle of nowhere on a pancake-flat landscape. If you go in certain directions you can see downtown from quite a distance, considering that the buildings aren't even that tall.
Now, I still wanna know who gave this place a 10... not just one, but two 10's.
:?:

parody24 January 5th, 2003, 10:00 AM Winnipeg looks good for a metro of 700,000.
I gave it a 7/10.
Those aerial photos were fantastic. Gives a damn good
perspective of the whole city center.
SteelCity32 January 10th, 2003, 03:47 AM nice photos. Pretty small amount of scrapers. But Win is one of my favorite cities.
7/10
Andy6 January 10th, 2003, 04:02 AM Given that Winnipeg's real interest is its historic office buildings and warehouses, the fact that there are also a fair number of modern skyscrapers is just a bonus.
Jeff from Winnipeg January 10th, 2003, 06:34 AM Hey Andy! Finally made the journey over to this forum, eh? Welcome! It's great to have another Winnipeg-booster on here. The only other real Winnipeg-booster on here is slugggradio (former Winnipegger, like yourself, who now lives in Calgary).
This forum has a lot more international exposure than SSP and is generally more mature... that's good in most ways.
And a warning: Never say anything bad about Melbourne, Australia. They'll find it and and gang up on you.
So once again... Welcome! It'll be great to see you around.
Andy6 January 10th, 2003, 02:39 PM Thanks JfW. I will keep the Melbourne tip in mind. I think I was on this forum a few times before, but I can't remember what my name was.

Hmm. That's verging on being a self-refuting comment.
Australians say "dude"? What happened to "mate"?
isoboy January 11th, 2003, 07:51 PM Not a bad skyline, not a particularly impressive one either - a mediocre skyline. One good point is the amount of skyscrapers - there are lots of them, even though none are particularly high. As for architectural styles, there are several interesting buildings, but the vast majority are bland. No real eyesores though. Overall, 5.5/10.
On a completely different point, I'm surprised and shocked at the amount of downtown space that is taken up by parking lots. Does Winnipeg have a functional public transport system or does everyone travel to work by car? And surely the predominance of parking lots at ground level = an absence of urban street-life. There seems to be parking lots where one would expect shops, restaurants, cafes etc.
Andy6 January 11th, 2003, 08:03 PM Winnipeg has a huge downtown for its size and over the years a lot of parking lots have been created as older buildings have been torn down. It is also a very cold city (one of the coldest in the world) for 4-5 months of the year, which makes transit use unattractive to all but the poorest (and street life somewhat difficult to maintain). The older Exchange District, which consists in many blocks of 1900-era brick and cut stone warehouses and elaborate terra cotta office towers, has few parking lots, great "curb appeal", and is beginning to develop the cafes and street life that is lacking in the more business oriented part of downtown. You can see it in the background of some of the aerial photos, running west from the river.
I think the general lack of real eyesores among the more modern skyscrapers is a blessing. It's about all you can hope for in Canada.
Jeff from Winnipeg January 12th, 2003, 07:57 AM That is so true, Andy (the over-sized downtown part specifically). I always try to imagine the downtown in a shrunk-down form, still containing all the existing buildings, but putting them all into a 10-block area. It would probably be really dense... the TD, IG, Fort Garry Place, Trizec, MTS, Richardson and Radisson in the centre, surrounded by the rest. Of course, for it to have been more dense right off the bat (let's say around Portage and Main), a whole bunch of heritage buildings would've had to come down. So you win some you lose some.
isoboy January 12th, 2003, 02:46 PM Yes, Winnipeg does have an impressively large downtown for its size - that would explain the large amount of "vacant" downtown land devoted to parking lots etc. And I guess the climate is a big factor in any consideration of "streetlife" - downtown restaurants, cafes etc. Despite any shortcomings in the skyline, the city looks attractive and well-planned and seems to be surrounded by very pleasant suburbs, with lots of greenery. A new "signature" tower would look great in the city.
proudmelbourneguy January 15th, 2003, 04:58 AM Winnepegs quite suprising for a city of it's size, I voted it better then edmonton, which i think looks like shit, i gave it 7... anbd on melbourne - wasnt gona say a thing bout it, until i saw a comment, were fine if u dont like things bout our city, like canuck not liking the spiers, did we give him hell? No. Certain forumers get hastle because they make completely ridiculous statements, which i see as stirring shit...
Thanks guys
Jeff from Winnipeg January 15th, 2003, 07:06 AM Thanks for the comments proudmelbourneguy!
Anyways... I just said that cuz I've seen a couple threads go totally crazy after some kind of anti-Melbournesque comments. I was kinda just joking about it too... you know, just breaking the ice for the new forumer. I meant nothing by it, seriously.
Also, I like spires! I think Canada has way too many boxes. I think the next building that goes up in this city should have a big spire that is lit-up at night... be a real landmark.
proudmelbourneguy January 16th, 2003, 01:09 PM Na I understand man, just some of the comments of late are so bullshit, and It's just been slowely getting to me, these forums are fantastic, and i just hope they dont go the way other forums have..
Yeah love spiars man, how could anyone not like them:P hehe, well personal opinion i suppose......
I rekon a well designed spiared building will look fantastic in Winnipeg, whic I thinks a swell looking ciy for it's size..

kiku99 January 31st, 2003, 06:11 PM not bad. 5/10
blah blah February 8th, 2003, 09:24 PM Eric Wong from Australia - "Winnipeg is near arctic." This is a ridiculous statement. Anyone familiar with Canadian geography would know that Winnipeg is no closer to the arctic circle than Australia is to the Antarctic circle.
By the way couple skyscraper projects on horizon in next few years - Manitoba Hydro tower, and the CanWest global tower.
Andy6 February 8th, 2003, 11:39 PM Winnipeg is at the same latitude as London.

7.5/10
james2390 July 28th, 2003, 04:53 AM 8/10. I really like the way it all fits together. Looks great, especially those aerials.
Fabio July 31st, 2003, 10:34 PM 8/10
Nice towers and it is the "Peg"
Evergrey August 15th, 2003, 04:09 PM 4.5
Everything is so boxy and beige!
PegRules04 January 12th, 2004, 03:28 AM Love my city, but we need a few more towers before I'll be truly happy. I generally like our downtown, however the dirtiness of the ultra-old Exchange district is disgusting. Alot of great charachter buildings there, with loads of potential, and alot are now just beginning to be tapped in to. I believe in 10 years or so, the Exchange will be totally revamped, making downtown a great place to be.
C'mon Hydro....think TALL!
ParraMan January 12th, 2004, 11:57 PM 7.5
Has a nice, dense tallish cluster there, but as a whole, the skyline seems a bit too spread out, with midrisers popping up all over the place. Needs some more density and definition by building up on those ugly carparks to give it a better proile. Still actually surprisingly large for what I expected of Winnipeg.
KCDevin January 13th, 2004, 02:47 PM it may not have alot of tall buildings but those medium tall skyscrapers add to the skyline.
Those two sets of tall buildings reminds me of our downtown. Except with thinner and more modern skyscrapers.
It is also nice that they are connected by skyscrapers.
7.5/10
More than 7 and almost an 8 ;)
PegRules04 February 8th, 2004, 04:51 AM I agree, the parking lot situation is sad. However, the city is currently amending zoning by-laws to allow for more mixed-use projects, and is making it easier for developers to cut through the red tape and get their proposals through the approval process. Supposedly it's modelled after Chicago's plan. Winnipeg apparently is quite well-known by developers for dragging them through months and months of bull before most of them end up pulling out and scrapping projects all-together.
I really think this will create an influx of new projects, large, medium, and small into our downtown, slowly filling up those ugly car parks.
andrin February 8th, 2004, 06:43 AM I'll give it an 8.
Very decent skyline for a city of less than a million. Having the towers in a similar style also helps to that clean look.
It will become close to being perfect if it gets added a tower of at least 200 m in a dark colour.

SpatulaCity April 17th, 2004, 08:51 PM I love the Peg - it's got a great feel to it. Back in the 30's and 40's is was a very prominent Canadian city (moreso than it is today). It's definitely bouncing back... which is awesome. It's got a great lived-in feeling which adds a lot of character to it.
Skyline: 7
spankymonkey April 17th, 2004, 11:07 PM hey, I really like Winnipeg its quite a good skyline for a small city.
i have visited canada once before but i only spent my time in Toronto and Niagara.
where is Winnipeg in relevence with Toronto.
on my next trip i would like to take a look around.
this city also reminds me of my own home one, when im there, Birmingham in the uk. a city which hasnt really got a magnificent skyline but a city whihc has the potential.
7/10

mauiboy63sea July 18th, 2004, 02:15 AM A pleasant surprise. I had no idea Winnipeg had so many buildings. It does sprawl a little for the size of the population. And did I read that right, the metro area only adds an add'l 50K people. That's a nice bulk in the city limits. I rather like that. Looks like a lot of potential to be King in the Canadian Prairie. I gave Wpeg a 6.
bdog33 August 2nd, 2004, 06:28 AM I live in Winnipeg and I am a big fan of our skyline. There needs to be a couple more 30+ storey buildings a bit away from portage and main. Hopefully the new Manitoba Hydro building is the kind of new building we are looking for!
r2 August 2nd, 2004, 04:15 PM skyline is nice ... you can tell that this city is very liveable
Jules August 2nd, 2004, 06:32 PM Not tall enough. 6.
Flatiron August 2nd, 2004, 06:41 PM Reminds me a bit of Buffalo and St. Louis in that there are a lot of distingushed individual buildings that fail to cohere into a greater whole (mostly due to ill-advised urban renewal?).
Has a lovely location (nice woods!) and tremendous potential, so I give it a 7/10.
Alas, the square dome on the capitol building is fecking hideous.
twincities03 August 2nd, 2004, 08:20 PM I've always been impressed with the Peg's skyline. I think the skyline is at least a 5.5 / 10.
It's been a little over a year since my last visit so, I should start planning my next trip.
bdog_33 September 7th, 2004, 05:15 AM how do i post pictures? I took really good ones a couple weeks ago!!!

ScraperDude April 7th, 2005, 06:17 PM Winnipeg is like the Columbus, Ohio of Canada to me (which I love my Columbus).
Just reading on this forum it seems like some people way under estimate the city.
I like the skyline. I wish it did have a new tallest with a spire away or just outside of the big cluster. The city looks grey to me because most of the buildings are grey except TD so it would be awesome for a few more buildings with maybe a nice black glass tower and perhaps a nice shade of blue windows..... and more buildings designed outside the box shape.
MattSal April 7th, 2005, 07:50 PM Comes together well. I give it a 6.5/10.
Jaybird April 30th, 2005, 05:26 PM Pretty darn good skyline for a city of 650,000 and a metro of 700,000, looks like a skyline for a city of 1,000,000 almost or more than that! 8/10
citizen j April 30th, 2005, 10:36 PM 7.5/10
I know this will sound like heresy, but in the third photo, the city looks a bit like Edmonton -- downtown on a river, street grid spreading out behind it, airport in the background. Love the Exchange District. Where is MB Hydro's tower going up? How tall?

I actually think these cities look better in the winter. There's something rather awe inspiring in a scene of skyscrapers in minus 20 or 30 with the vapor coming from the roofs. It looks dramatic and unique, even if the buildings themselves are not. I like winnipeg; nice old buildings to the north of the city centre. Almost european in places.
