Manchester is either England's 2nd or 3rd city depending on who you speak to, Manchester is one of Europe's most forward and dynamic cities and is leading the way with city living and a 24 hour lifestyle where the downtown in never empty,

Manchester is also the birthplace of the industrial revolution, many bands such as the smiths and oasis, its also the birthplace of free trade, trade unionism, capitalism, city zoning and the computer, the atom was also 1st split in Manchester. It hosted the Commonwealth Games this year and is home to the worlds biggest sporting club Manchester United F.C.

Manchester hasn't got the tallest towers in the world, but there are many beautiful towers under construction especcially in the sloping glass style.

Anyway enough about the cities history here are some facts:

15,000 downtown population
420,000 city population
2,550,000 metro (Greater Manchester) population
Tallest Building 400 feet (CIS Tower)

Here's some recent panoramas taken by yours truly:

Manchester as a city is great! But its skyline isn't the best, yet its still better than I expected. 5.5/10 ... not bad, and I'm sure that after the new projects Manchester is going to look much better.

yeah i know skyline wise it isnt the best but the city more than makes up for it at street levelm

British cities (even London) have a lot of catching up to do as skyscrapers have only just came into fashion here (although we had a mini boom in the 60s). Hopefully in 15 years British cities will have great skylines while retaining their atmosphere and street level appearence.

Im surprised too having a look at some of the other cities on here im happy that Manchester seems to be at least equal to some other smaller US cities like Salt Lake in terms on skyline :)

I can't give it any more, really, much as I want to. It's not a bad skyline (and those aerial photos are great) but for me it falls down in two respects:

1. There's no real focal point. You could argue that the CIS tower, Sunley Tower, the Town Hall and one other (see below) are prominent on the skyline, but there is no one structure that draws the attention specifically.

2. The Arndale Tower. Oh dear. It's very disappointing that this isn't included in the general refurbishment of the Arndale. It's the one of the four most prominent structures when the skyline is seen from the south of the city, and it brings everything else down.

A shame the skyline is so average, really, because it doesn't begin to do justice to what is now a lovely city at street level.

I'm sorry. I'm the guy who voted "3 or less".

I have been to Manchester many times. That's where my company is HQrd, so I end up there mostly on business, but often stay the weekend to look at the town.

I quite like Manchester. It has certainly come a long way in the last decade to improve it's image. And if it keeps up the pace, it will soon be one very impressive city.

But this vote was for the skyline, and from those photo's, I must say it probably is the worst attempt of a skyline I have ever seen.

Manchester has to compete with London, and skyscrapers is one way it could easily do that if the city wanted. A city of 2.5 to 3 million can easily sustain a massive skyline, just look outside Europe. From my impression of Manchester, it could easily demolish some of the less attractive of the older buildings and build up.

But as it stands now...

The few high rises Manchester has appear to be from the 60s and 70s and are quite ugly. British cities are not known for their skylines, they're known for their street-level charm.

Chogmook, you're trying too hard. And proposed buildings don't count!

bileduct

Give the place a chance. Ten years ago it was one of the worst cities of its size in the western world, but few places have transformed themselves quite as quickly as Manchester has over the last five years. The rate at which formerly derelict areas are being turned into vibrant, livable city districts is astonishing. Add this to the fertile underground culture that the place has always had and you have quite a city in the making.

OK, this effect hasn't transferred itself to the skyline yet, but it will (there is hardly anywhere in the world where office space is so expensive compared to the price of land as Manchester, and that must mean massive development is on the way). And when it does start building towers you expect something special: there are two or three top class young architects developing practices in the city, and a number of very successful developers with a keen eye for the commercial potential of good design.

So not that impressive yet, but watch this space...

JustMe dont worry thankyou for your honesty in these matters usually people who vote the bottom option never explain why so thankyou,

The problem is that it seems the skyline is full of 60-70's towers, like in almost all British cities.

It looks nice at night, but come one, what big city doesn't. Just put up a few nice lights and you're there.

Its okay - the Mancuian Way (inner city ring road) Motorway is really scary - especially with that real tight turn into Brook Street :O - I get my results on the 14th and hopefully I shall be going up to Manchester to study Geography.............about the Trafford Centre - sorry the title for best shopping centre has to go to Bluewater (which is also Europes largest) - not only with the ace Thames walk (the river Thames drawn on the floor and you can trace it back to its source through London, Oxford, etc), the Winter Gardens (one of the best places Ive eaten in my life), the mall with the hundreds of statues describing every job you can think of (carpenter, to banker, from butcher to ironmonger..........theres just hundreds of statues depicting every occupation on this planet and it's just mind blowing). The shops are okay, but I sometimes prefer Lakeside (which is Europe #3, Europes #2 is up in Newcastle - the Metro Centre) which is just over the river and some 10miles away (talk about competition :D) because it has that massive retail park (150 retail lots? along with IKEA) and that slightly smaller shopping mall.

I gave it a 7, although i suppose i am extremely biased.
why a 7? well it was those night shots, its just such a colourful city and vibrant that i couldnt resist...
as for the daytime, well.. i understand the criticism, it is a shoddy affair at present. the first time i saw CIS i thought it was an eye-sore, now however i have grown to respect it, and like it. i think with the unique style of manchester which is has found it will only strengthen to create buildings of the same quality but much higher in the future, then it will be one of the best skylines in the world, it wont be known for its height, but for its incredible shapes and colours from what a basis is already set....
Long may she live! :moods:

Mr_ed2

I gave it a three. And I am from manchester!

It's about time manchesters skyline started developing big-time, there's lot's of money floating around manchester at the mo, a recent sale of development land was just sold at 32million an acre!

I would give it higher, as there are some beautiful buildings, but this is about skylines, and to be frank, manchester can do better!

Manchester is similar in pop'n, (both city and urban area), to places like denver, st louis, atlanta.... the list goes on, all of which have decent skylines. The trouble with, manchester is struck by the british curse of being invredibly low-rise in comparison to it's pop'n. Until it develops into what it could be, I can't give it more than 3.

Looks better in the flesh really - these photo's don't realy give any impression of the scale of the street level buildings in the foreground, especially around the Oxford road area. I can't say Manchester has a great skyline - 6/10 at best, but it's improving and will become very unique with the addition of a few more 'machester slopers'.

Blunther
September 10th, 2003, 11:23 AM
There's not a single high-rise that I like in Manchester. I respect the CIS, but it don't mean I have to like it :)

It's the same as Brum really, although we've got a couple of towers that I like.

It'll change soon though. What they're doing to Sunley Tower looks nice, and with all the sloping glass, and this big new Beetham tower, I think yer skyline'll be a lot better.

5/10 now, simply because there's some buildings there, and it's British.

There is a lot to see in this city but sadly it can't all be captured in one image. There is alot going up in the next few years but it isnt that we are rating but what we see now, so I personally go for a 7.

People think the CIS is ugly, I think its a good representation of 60's architecture and being the first tall in europe its got a bit of history too it.

the future will bring some exciting projects

It certainly has an interesting eclectic mix of architecture inluding so many pieces with sloped rooves and crowns.

I think I would like to visit there one day. Pitch in Manchurians and buy me a ticket please ;)

The 'City of sloped rooves' gets an 11, oops I mean 10.5,...no, no it can only be a 10/10 and that ain't a ploy for an airline ticket....truly ;)

at present I will give it 7 for Europe but only 5 for world ratings. however when the hilton on deansgate is finished it will have a massive effect on the skyline.

Manchester does have a large downtown area and is heavy populated and active for 24hrs.
I have been to cities across the US that have great skylines (better than Manc)
but have a ghost downtown district, after 5pm and on sunday's they are dead.
Memphis, miami, atantic city and baltimore to name a few.

Manchester doesnt try to be something that it isnt, infact its a wolf in sheeps clothing.
it was the first industrial city the world had ever seen, in its day it was the richest city on earth. which u can still see in its architecture.

Give the city a decade or so and there will be a couple of 50+ floorers on that skyline and then whatever gets announced between now and then...

Manchester is not a skycraper city, and i think it will never be a skyscraper city, also in 10 years not when all the new highrisers are build.
and i am lucky for it......
the most highrise cities on earth are looking like the other highrise cities.....
all the highrise buildings are just shown a very little decade in the history of our cities. frankfurt/main for example has a lot of skyscrapers, specially for a european city, but apart of the skyscraper what can it offer?? the most (not all) old historical bulidings were distroyed during the 2nd world war...,apart from the skysrapers there a mostly 60th/70th lowrise-buildings now... not very beautiful....

in manchester the old charme still lives. and manchester can be proud of it.

i remember my first visit in manchester. i was so impressed about the endless old and historical buildings. ok, i notice also the some highrise buildings, but that wasn´t something special for me. this kind of buildings you will find in every big city in western europe, in düsseldorf, rotterdam etc.......
a lot of mancunians are proud of the new beetham tower they build in the moment. i am sure that the building will be nice, beautiful when it is finished, but is that really somethink special? no..... in my opinion buildings like the old royal exchange theatre or the old townhall for example are much more special.... i think the new beetham tower is on the wrong place in manchester. in the neighbourhood of castlefield, the old viaduct, great northern building it looks a little bit like a "foreign substance". maybe the area behind victoria station is a better area for new skyscrapers... there is still enough place..... but it is just my opinion....

for the skyline i give manchester 4/10 points...for the city as whole 100/10 points :)

The skyline looks better and more meatier when your looking at it from a midrise point of view, and close up. From a distance, it can look a bit spread out, but hopefully when more towers are built, it will become more dense. That photo of the penines in the background could be worth looking at again in 10-15 years time ;)

It's hard to remain impartial, when it's my home city, and that's true for everybody. However, I have scored it 8.5 from a UK Skyline Perspective.

hoangduong
November 29th, 2006, 08:28 AM
Note a lot of these pics are old and there has been a few developments since.

In the next few years Manchester is getting at leat 8 to 10 new mid rise (20 to 25 storey) towers, but all of high quality design,

There are also dozens of new towers between 15 and 20 stories and there are even a few plans for towers between 30 and 40 stories.

If anyone is interested i can show some of these developments.

British cities are booming again, in skyline terms we just have a long way to catch up, even if our cities are great at street level! :)

7,5/10 for now :wink2:

As with most european cities its not about the height of the skyscrapers its all about the feel of the street level life scene, for cities such as paris, london, rome and a bunch more. European cities are jsut a bit older so they can't support the mega skyscraper projects.

I'd give the skyline 7/10 but Manchester as a city gets 10/10. It oozes effortless cool. It's hard to describe. No wonder so much creativity eminates from such a small, relatively speaking, city. I live 30 miles away but visit very often, I was there last week, and I never get bored of the place. Put the Stones Roses on your ipod and have a wander around the Northern Quarter and it all makes sense. I love the place!

Lille is industrial and northern! Formerly a centre of the textile industries just like Manchester, now stop trolling!

I find the whole premise that you can judge anything meaningful about a city by how photogenic it is from a few kms away to be a ridiculous one anyway. But that's the premise of this section I suppose so i'll shut up.

They are the Pennines, they form a kind of backbone of Great Britain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennines

As for the reason people are referring to Manchester as a great city, it has made big strides in regenerating itself over the last 20 years and building on its cultural contributions to create a recognition that is only surpassed in the UK by London. Some call it the Capital of the North which is stupid but it is certainly the biggest and arguably most imoportant city in the north.

Oh and it has a huge airport :|

As for the Croydon comparrison, Croyodon has a lot of boxes but I'd say Manchester's scale is more impressive.

I've been to Manchester many times and these photos really don't deliver the real scale of the skyline or the city centre density.

It would probably be beneficial to see some photos taken around viewpoints around the same distance as Trinity Way.
