hyacinthus January 20th, 2005, 02:09 AM This is a new thread for posting pictures of the same location (in Singapore) of at least 10 years difference. Do state the date/year of the picture taken, where possible. If you have a story to tell about the place, that will be great to make this thread more interesting.
Looking forward to your posts. :)

We do conserve the shophouses through careful restoration and allow for appropriate residential or commercial uses.
See the restored shophouses in the Now picture with orange roofs? :)

Pengui February 3rd, 2005, 02:54 AM Yep, you can see the Whiteaway Building redstone is speaking about, on the left :-)
It must have stood where Standard Chartered now is, I guess ? I'm not quite sure that you can do anything about this second pic now, it must be a wall of skyscrapers here instead ^^

hyacinthus February 18th, 2005, 02:19 AM What's so pathetic about it?
Ray, have been to Old Turf Club before?
Not many people patronise the place now due to inaccessibility and probably not much can be done there except grocery shopping. Grocery prices at Giant aren't any much cheaper than NTUC and there are now more outlets in Singapore... Restaurants there aren't doing well too... close down one after another... Number of 2nd-hand car companies doing business there has also reduced... Thus, pathetic place...

This 3-storey building was built by Seth Paul who originally named it Oranje Building in 1904. In the 1930s, it became a hotel (the Oranje) and was probably used by the Japanese forces as such during World War II. The building which is now preserved by planning restrictions imposed by the URA, was designed by R.A.J. Bidwell of Swan & Maclaren, who designed both the Raffles and Goodwood Park Hotels, in the Venetian Renaissance style during the Victorian period.

Chijmes was once the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) established in 1854 and was founded by a Frenchman, Father Nicholas Barre.
At the beginning of the 20th century, CHIJ started the construction of the new neo-gothic Chapel which was later followed by neo-gothic galleries at both sides of the Chapel. Following petitions to preserve the building, renovation works started in 1991 to convert the premises into a plaza of themed retail and F&B outlets. The result is a 4-acres S$100 million project unmatched for its unique ambience, now known as CHIJMES.

hyacinthus June 30th, 2005, 02:40 PM Keppel Railway Station
Before the causeway was built , the railway in Singapore was a pure island railway because it was not connected to Johor Bahru. The construction of the Johor-Singapore Causeway across the Johor Straits began in 1919 and was opened to goods trains on September 17th, 1923 and to passenger trains on October 1st, 1923. Previously passengers and goods train were transferred at Woodlands to a ferry and the connecting train on the Peninsular Malaysia.
The railway station building at Keppel Road was completed in 1932 and contains a very fine Central Waiting Hall with a dome roof. The walls are paneled with typical Malaysian scenes, such as paddy (rice) planting, rubber tapping, shipping activities, road (bullock) transporting, coconut (copra) growing and tin mining. These panels and the original floor blocks were specially manufactured locally, using rubber product, designed successfully to deaden noise. The two long station platforms are capable of accommodating the longest mail trains and are covered by umbrella reinforced concrete roofs.

And then there's the mysterious road called Hong Kah Circle. Heard it being mentioned hundreds of times on ClubSNAP forums, but still can't locate it.
According to people, the factories are over 50 years old!!! :runaway:
Certainly the tallest structures in the west for many many years.
Jurong Brick Works has 4 chimneys (one hidden behind tallest chimney)
The brickworks at Track 20 has 2 chimneys
The old Nanyang Brick Works has 1 chimney.

redstone February 4th, 2006, 09:07 AM I was so shocked to learn that it was occupied by a society called World Buddhist Society before it was a restaurant.
Back then the place was in bad need of repair, as seen in the pic.

Redstone,
Are u sure this is the same street? There seem to be some unauthorised changes to the facade if it is! I believe Far East kenna fined for the demolition of the facade of Albert Court... so I wont be surprised that they did it again... u have the proof man! Call URA!!!!:lol::lol:
Anyway, I didn't notice it this time even though I sat across at YaKun most days for breakfast during its reno... now no free parking mah!

patcheon November 4th, 2007, 12:48 PM Found a old 70s SIA advertisement. Not a photo but a video clip. Reveal a few locations of how they look then. Unable to identify the starting location where the trishaw turn into a side street.

The original shophouses are still there and restored nicely ..
It's just that the National Library looks so humongous in the picture! :bash: Nice comparison by the way. May I ask? What is that seemingly tall building in the background in the then photo, that is now blocked by the National Library?

Looking at google earth and also my memory of that area, my guess would be those HDB flats around Waterloo Street.
redstone March 19th, 2008, 05:01 PM The first few "shophouses" on the left (towards Library end) are actually part of a commercial/residential building called Talib Centre, and the first few houses on the opposite row is called Talib Court. Both have extensions towards the back (ugly designs).
In fact most of the shophouses have extensions behind, can be seen from the alley. Then you'll see one or two entirely original shophouses, no rear extension tower, like a dwarf sandwiched between two giants. But it's a great area, great street feel and great food. :)
