I wanted to start this thread for a while. Just got back from Baroda with a few pictures (didn't have much time :( ). Those outside of Gujarat may not know, but Baroda is considered the cultural city of Gujarat (Sanskrutik Nagri). Baroda has the right mix of population, size and in many ways similar to Pune. Baroda for long has been the preferred home of NRIs (or NRGs if I dare!) who've decided to finally return home.

Baroda is the home of a lot of heritage and modern buildings. I'll appreciate it other folks can post more pics of Baroda.

You have posted the html links.

You have to post the image address. I don't know how to get the permanent image address in fotopics because they give that only to members. Maybe Kshatriya can help you.

But here's how you do it at www.imageshack.us

Go there. Click the browse button and load the image from your harddrive.

Click the button host it.

It will give you a page with lots of links.

Go to the bottom of the page.

Copy the last link and paste it between the IMG tags..

I loaded an example pic baroda2.jpg

the address got was http://img101.exs.cx/img101/5092/baroda25fr.jpg

I put it in IMG tags and bingo here it is

http://img101.exs.cx/img101/5092/baroda25fr.jpg

Give it a try...

Thanks Drwho!

Actually, I remember reading an article in outlook a few years ago in the late 90s about shopping centres in India. Chandigarh, Vadodara and Guwahati were considered to be the top 3 cities back then as far as shopping centre count went.

In fact, quite a few of the buildings in the pictures are more than 10 years old. Especially the one with "Metro Shoes" - National Plaza which is 16 years old (1988)!

IndiaRocks, do you know if new stronger building codes have been put in place following the earthquake there? Have many of the old 1970s style blocks that were damaged in the earthquake been replaced by first class buildings?

Since you seem to be an active member in Baroda, can you gather pictures of other areas such as Fatehgunj, Sayajibaug, Sayajigunj (dairy den area), race course circle, karelibaug, nizampura etc? Those areas are worth a view. I'll let you beat me to getting those!

Wow! Great pic mainhoonna! In the background is Sayaji (Kamati) baug - an 80 acre park and supposedly Baroda's tallest building ( at least 5 years ago).

The traffic is a little more controlled now with traffic signals around the traffic circle.

Rickety Vadodara buses to get the boot; private players invited

VADODARA: In the coming months, the Gujarat State Road Transport (GSRTC), will gradually phase out its rickety city bus service and hand over the responsibility of monitoring the service to the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC). Sources in GSRTC say that a circular issued by the vice-chairman has set April 1 this year to start the phasing out process.

The civic body on the other hand recently invited "Expression of Interest" (EOI) from private parties for operating the bus service. Till now only one operator, the Valbhipur Transportation Co-operative Society (VTCOS), popularly called ViTCOS, which operates a 35 bus fleet in Bhavnagar has come forward with a proposal. A 26-point terms of agreement was issued by the VMC municipal commissioner containing details of the fiveyear contract. The civic body is still waiting for more proposals.

"It is a policy decision of the state government. I am not aware of the deadline for phasing out various city bus services. But the government has suggested to the civic body to identify private players and monitor the bus service for the city," says principal secretary, home (transport), Ravi Saxena.

Legal experts in the VMC, however, say that the civic body would not be directly responsible for maintaining the bus service. It would only monitor the activities of the private operator.

"The civic body is acting as an agent for the state government. The functions of the VMC would be restricted to implementing new routes, number of bus stands, additional buses if needed. The contractor is bound to implement any suggestion rendered by the civic body regarding the service.A special officer would be appointed to oversee the activities," says a senior municipal official.

On whether the general board or the standing committee of the VMC would be consulted on the issue, the senior official said, "We have just invited EOI and not tenders. The proposals will be put forth before both policymaking bodies shortly. The civic body would not be spending a single rupee on the service. The state government has already suggested the bus fares and ticket designs."

The decision to phase out the GSRTC city buses came at an appropriate time as these buses were made city buses after they ran almost seven lakh kilometres as part of the inter-city fleet. Besides, the 50-odd buses functional at the moment, do a 10,000 km per day. Each of these buses makes a loss of Rs 14 per kilometre which brings the loss to Rs 1 crore a month.

The need for public transport has grown over the past years as on the one hand while the Vadodara population is growing at the rate of 19 per cent per annum, certain areas like Manjalpur, Gotri and Kareilibaug have practically no public transport to cater to the growing numbers. The bus service is so out of sync that for the 550 routes, GSRTC has only around 70 operational bus. ViTCOS in its proposal has suggested 150 buses for 550 routes in the first phase itself.

"What if the contractor finds it a loss-making proposition and chooses to withdraw? The onus would lie on the civic body to identify another private player. What if no one turns up later? The public will hold us responsible for the mess," says mayor N V Patel.
