RafflesCity January 20th, 2005, 03:59 PM Some info from the college website:
As part of the Singapore Government's plan to upgrade LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts into a world-class arts institution, the College is undertaking the large-scale development of a new campus at the Rochor area on a one-hectare site bound by Prinsep Street, Short Street and Albert Street. The size of the new campus in the Rochor area is estimated to be 35,000 sqm in gross floor area. Construction work is anticipated to commence after first quarter of 2004 with project completion targeted for 2006. The College is scheduled to move from its current premises at 90 Goodman Road into the new campus by late 2006.
This central city location will provide easy access for the public to attend the College’s growing number of concerts and exhibitions and have convenient access for the College’s students from all parts of the country.
LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts held a two-stage competition to appoint an Architect for the development of the College’s new City Campus located at the Rochor area on a 1-hectare site bounded by Prinsep Street, Short Street and Albert Street.
Stage 1 of the Competition was open to all individual Architects and Architectural Firms whose proprietor(s) are registered with the Board of Architects, Singapore. A total of 92 Architects/Architectural Firms collected the Competition Package by the deadline of 13 September 2002.
Four entries were selected for Stage 2 of the Competition. An exhibition of four shortlisted entries of the Architectural Competition was held at The URA Centre on 17 and 18 February 2003. RSP Architects Planners & Engineers was adjudged the winner of the competition.
The winning entry was also displayed at Artrium @ MITA from 27 February to 1 March 2003.
RafflesCity January 20th, 2005, 04:00 PM RSP Architects Planners & Engineers wins LASALLE-SIA's New City Campus Architectural Competition
18 Feb 2003

RSP Architects Planners & Engineers was adjudged the winner in LASALLE-SIA’s New City Campus Architectural Competition. Mathew Samuel, Chairman, LASALLE Foundation Ltd, made the announcement at 5pm on 17 February 2003 at a ceremony at URA Centre.
In line with the Singapore Government's plan to re-site LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts from Goodman Road to the city area, the College is undertaking the development of a new campus in the Rochor area on a one-hectare site bound by Prinsep Street, Short Street and Albert Street.
“The challenge for the judges was to find the best scheme - in terms of image for the College, the quality of the design ideas, as well as functionality. All three considerations are essential, and they have been addressed in a bold and exciting way by the winning scheme, which we believe will make our new campus building an outstanding one.” said Dr Kenson Kwok, Chairman of the panel of jurors for the competition and Director of LASALLE Foundation Ltd.
The College announced the architectural competition for the new city campus in September 2002 and received a good response. Stage 1 of the Competition was open to all individual architects and architectural firms whose proprietor(s) are registered with the Board of Architects, Singapore. 68 entries were received by the closing deadline of 18 October 2002.
Four entries were selected for further concept development in Stage 2 of the Competition – SQFT Architects, DP Architects, JYD Architects and RSP Architects Planners & Engineers.
The four shortlisted entries from the competition will be exhibited at The Exhibition Space at URA Centre on 17 and 18 February. The exhibition will showcase the architectural concepts of the four entries including scale models. Members of the public are welcome to view the exhibits.
The panel of jurors for the competition included:
Dr Kenson Kwok (Chairman of the panel), Director, LASALLE Foundation Ltd
Professor Fumihiko Maki, Principal, Maki & Associates, Japan
John Ting, President, Singapore Institute of Architects
Tony Tan, Chief Architect, Housing Development Board
Vince Khoo, Deputy Chairman, LASALLE Foundation Ltd and Chairman, New City Campus Project Steering Committee, LASALLE-SIA
Edmund Tie, Director, LASALLE Foundation Ltd
Architectural Advisor for the competition was Ong Chin Bee of Ong Chin Bee Architects.
The size of the new campus is estimated to be 35,000 sqm in gross floor area. Construction work for the new campus is anticipated to commence after the first quarter of 2004 with project completion targeted for 2006. The College is scheduled to move from its current premises at 90 Goodman Road into the new campus by late 2006.
The cost of developing the new campus is in the region of S$85 million, which will be substantially funded by the government. The balance of the funds will have to be raised by the College. The College has already embarked on a number of fund-raising projects including the establishment of the Brother Joseph McNally Development Fund. Contributions to the Brother Joseph McNally Development Fund from members of the public are most welcome. For enquiries about the Fund, please contact Amrita Monticelli, Vice President (Development), at telephone 6340 9169 or email amrita@lasallesia.edu.sg

Pengui October 9th, 2005, 03:26 PM yup..looks like the basement is done...what do you think those green square nets all around the site are for? The columns?
Those are to signal holes in the ground. You can see it if you look closely at your pic :-) No idea why the holes, though, maybe sewer or something like that ? Or maybe the pillars will rise from the holes ?
Kit October 9th, 2005, 04:46 PM The green nets are temp safety barriers for the openings in the floorslab. I can't really tell what the openings are for. They seem too large and densely spaced for columns or services.

LaSalle-SIA to move to S$150m city campus at Prinsep St by Jan 2007
By Rita Zahara, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : Singapore is one step closer to achieving its goal of becoming an international arts and educational hub.
By January 2007, LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts will move to a new S$150 million city campus at Prinsep Street, part of the area designated as the Arts, Culture, Learning and Entertainment district.
It will take its place alongside the Singapore Management University and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
The playground for LaSalle-SIA students has expanded, with three state-of-the-art performance spaces.
The students also get to make their stage sets on campus (before they do it externally due to space constraints) with Asia's first theatre and art production workshop.
The five-storey building will also house the largest contemporary art gallery in Singapore, a museum of modern design and a 'living' museum dedicated to its founder, the late Brother Joseph McNally.
The students will also get to enjoy excellent amenities like the new National Library, the Drama Centre, the Singapore Art Museum and a wide array of arts organisations, shops and galleries in the area.
The design of the city campus was presented at the prestigious Architecture International Biennale in Venice last year.
LaSalle-SIA and several other architectural icons, including Esplanade Theatres on the Bay and the As-syafaah Mosque, were chosen to represent the best in contemporary architecture in Singapore.
Professor Robert Ely, President and CEO, LaSalle-SIA College of the Arts, said, "Great cities in the world have universities of the arts. London has one, Seoul has one, Berlin has one. They all have these institutions working at that higher level, focusing on arts, design, performance, and that's what we aim to be.. a university of the arts for Singapore."
LaSalle-SIA is also determined to be different from other institutions in Singapore, offering its own degrees in practice-based Arts and Design.
Professor Ely said, "The degree programmes that we offer here (at every level right through to masters and from next year, Phd)...they're very practical. They're hands on practice-based degree programmes. They're not to produce just more academics. They're actually to produce people who can work in the industry and who can lead that industry."
There are now 1,700 students enrolled.
And 83 percent of the first cohort graduating with degrees have since found jobs in the six weeks upon graduation.
The institution hopes to attract some 3,000 students by 2008. - CNA/ms

RafflesCity September 26th, 2006, 12:08 PM LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts expects 70% of its intake to be foreign students
26 Sep 06
Student intake is expected to be doubled when LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts moves into its new $210m city campus at Short Street.
The school, which aims to be one of the leading arts institutes in the world, also expects foreign students to eventually make up 70 percent of its cohort.
The new campus is expected to be functional by June next year.
Among the facilities, the campus will have six blocks of state-of-the-art teaching space, five theatres, Singapore's largest contemporary arts gallery, a permanent Museum of Design, as well as Southeast Asia's first theatre and art production workshop.
These facilities are not just for students.
The public can also walk into the 24-hour art institute to catch exhibitions, have coffee, or just watch how arts education is being carried out in the architectural icon.
A building at Short Street will also be converted into a hostel for about 800 students.
Overall, the new campus is about three times larger than the original one.
The number of student intake will also go up, from the current 2,000 to about 4,000 in three years' time.
The number of degree programmes is also going to expand, from 51 currently to about 80 by 2010.
Foreign students now make up 30 percent of the school's population.
Professor Robert Ely, President of LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, said: "We expect to see the number of international students increase even further, possibly up to about 70 percent. That is largely to do with the fact that to be a world leader, you have to treat the rest of the world as student pool. The competition for places is going to get harder, that is inevitable. We've seen a huge increase in applications. This year, a 42 percent increase - that is on top of a similar 40 percent increase last year."
The school also has plans to open campuses in Asia and the Middle East.
Altogether, LASALLE-SIA aims to take in 10,000 students a year globally by 2012.
Education Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, said: "The Ministry will be working closely with LASALLE-SIA to ensure that its endeavours to develop itself into a first-class arts institution, one of the world's best arts institutions, will be realised."
LASALLE-SIA's current programmes include design, media, performing arts and visual arts.
These are all among the fastest growing industries in the new economy.
Last year, 84 percent of LASALLE-SIA's graduates found jobs within three months of completing studies.

I've just heard about this project yesterday and saw renderings from the Lasalle website. This structure has an interesting concept, and the interiors look very artistic, a fitting environment for arts students. As an arts student myself, an interesting structure with such artistic interiors would give me enough inspiration to keep going. :)
There is also a similar project here in Manila which was started last 2005 and is almost completed now and will open this year too. It was also expected to open in 2006 but unfortunately got delayed as well. It is the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde School of Design and Arts (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=401556) (SDA) by the way. Arts college LaSalle moves to McNally Street next month
7 Jun 07
LaSalle gets a new home, at an address with a familiar name.
Come July 2, the 23-year-old arts college, situated at Goodman Road, will move to a new $150 million campus at McNally Street. The street is named after its founding father, the late Brother Joseph McNally.
According to a LaSalle spokesperson, the college was given approval for the name of the new road leading up to the campus at Rochor in March.
The street sign is not there yet, and will arrive later this month.
Plans are already in place to celebrate Brother Joseph's legacy, including an advertising campaign that will be unveiled at the end of June, which will reveal certain intriguing things about the founder, and the school.
The school will also dedicate a gallery space to Brother Joseph's art works, which consists mostly of sculptures.
The college will kick off its moving house celebrations tonight with its annual graduation shows in the visual and media arts and design, along with outdoor music performances and a showcase of students' animation and film work at the Goodman Road campus.
LaSalle's annual fashion show, organised by the Fashion Institute of Singapore, will be held tomorrow night.
The college, formerly known as Lasalle -SIA College of the Arts, started in 1984 as an arts centre in St Patrick's School, where Brother Joseph was a principal.
A year later, it was renamed to Lasalle College of the Arts and moved to Telok Kurau. It moved to its current Goodman Road campus in 1992.

Are those for climbers ?
Will attract the spidermen or spiderwomen for a try.
babystan03 August 12th, 2007, 11:29 AM Saw it yesterday....looks nice...
SmellyHongKongAir August 12th, 2007, 01:02 PM the originality comes within!
awesome
Singapor3 August 12th, 2007, 05:22 PM Nice facade..
kurakura August 13th, 2007, 09:41 AM This is one of the most kick ass building in SG
JoSin August 14th, 2007, 04:52 PM Definitely impressive!!!!
spikeshamz August 15th, 2007, 11:59 AM Extremely gorgeous. We should have more kinds of these types of architecture. BOLD and STRIKING. It is an area in the arts and entertainment districts anyway.
RafflesCity August 15th, 2007, 04:02 PM This building alone appears to have injected a whole lot of 'spirit' into the surroundings. Just looking at it and the tiredness of the area is forgotten. It also helps that the older buildings are painted in bright and cheerful colours to contrast with the black.
Here are some pics (credit to hya for helping me snap them LOL)

ncon August 15th, 2007, 05:47 PM ^^ great buildings
:okay:!
spikeshamz August 17th, 2007, 05:59 PM the side does look similiar to biopolis.
redstone August 19th, 2007, 08:01 PM In th newspaper article the reporter actually said IM Pei was japanese! :ohno:
spikeshamz August 19th, 2007, 08:41 PM hahhahah. what a grave mistake the reported had made. He should made an apology. He is an american chinese and he never did even study in japan before. Educated in Hong Kong and the states.....
heirloom August 19th, 2007, 08:42 PM IM Pei doesnt even sound like a japanese name! very insulting indeed
Cliff August 20th, 2007, 06:31 AM I went there, and the building is so open(currently only?) that you feel guilty walking around it, haha. Indeed a very impressive building with lots of thought given to its overall look. Still you could really tell that the architects got tired halfway through with all that intensive design from the details and interior. The doors are a real giveaway of their mind block.
I do love the daring use of synthetic grass, puts a smile on my face.:) Many architects would argue that this building is thoughtless and irresponsibly arbitrary, I can only agree to that fact, but rebuke to that conclusion.
Overall I really like the input of this building into the area, and it certainly makes you feel as if you are in a different world beyond the black fortress-like walls outside. I'd hug the building if my self-conciseness allowed.:D
redstone August 20th, 2007, 10:50 AM IM Pei doesnt even sound like a japanese name! very insulting indeed
IM Pei, China born, and later American citizen.
"Pei" is so obviously Chinese. :ohno:
Pengui August 23rd, 2007, 04:44 PM I've only seen it from the bus stop near Sim Lim, but it does really look great from that angle!
RafflesCity August 27th, 2007, 04:32 PM Ironically, the demolition of the 2 'antique' HDB blocks has created a more pleasant streetscape, with an open green field and a clearer glimpse of the architecture of this building.
I saw that the old road is now being tiled up into an attractive pedestrian area too.
kurakura August 28th, 2007, 07:13 AM Hope i get to study there....but my arts suck:ohno:
^tamago^ September 24th, 2007, 02:36 AM should we put this in the Completed Section? :)
ahlipp September 24th, 2007, 07:25 AM http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/rotpics03/lasalle1108c.jpg
this would make the most demanding green...anything less than a perfect shot wld be shattered glass and broken windows:lol:
Excelsvr September 24th, 2007, 03:08 PM It looks like a putting green
RafflesCity September 24th, 2007, 04:29 PM should we put this in the Completed Section? :)
maybe...would be great to take some pics of the new pedestrianized street and I believe LaSalle will construct a new student hostel on the plot of the demolished HDB blocks.
Excelsvr September 25th, 2007, 09:38 AM Does the new pedestrianized street look good? Photos please!
RafflesCity September 25th, 2007, 09:45 AM I wanted to take pics the last time but the guard was too fast.
I think it will look nice with nice tiles, and will extend the existing pedestrian street bazaar from Bencoolen Street.
This area is planned to be made more pedestrian friendly in future, to support the student and arts vibe of the area.
Excelsvr September 25th, 2007, 09:56 AM Is the tiles somewhat like a mural?
RafflesCity September 25th, 2007, 10:03 AM didnt take a close look....it was light pinkish with some simple but pleasant design....I dunno...but since its new it sure looked refreshing :)
Excelsvr September 25th, 2007, 10:08 AM Yucks. Pink? I thought it would be like black or ome dark colour to match the main building.
RafflesCity September 25th, 2007, 10:12 AM Dark pavement tiles would absorb more heat...
Excelsvr September 25th, 2007, 10:29 AM Heh. So what if it absorbs? We have shoes, what.
hyacinthus October 10th, 2007, 04:27 PM probably, need to change the title. Someone commented that the school name is now LaSalle College of Arts
=> http://belyl.wordpress.com/2007/09/14/lasalle-sia-college-of-arts/
Excelsvr October 10th, 2007, 05:25 PM They got change name?
hyacinthus October 11th, 2007, 06:07 PM yup. SIA no longer provide funding to the school. Thus, "SIA" is dropped from the name. u commented in belyl's blog entry but didn't read the first 2 comments? ;)
Excelsvr October 12th, 2007, 01:46 PM It was one month ago :)
teh March 26th, 2008, 06:21 PM Hi, it has been a long time since I last posted. I passed by Rochor area today ( 26 Mar 2008 ) and snapped these LASALLE SIA ARTS COLLEGE photos using my handphone. The building is indeed very artistic & modern looking.

RafflesCity May 22nd, 2008, 04:36 PM It is an interesting addition. Perhaps the only good excuse to demolish the old Short Street flats. Now if they would only consider allowing a park or plaza on the vacant land, to allow this building to be easily seen. As it is now...its packed in a dense area.
LaSalle 'glass gem' bags top building award
21 May 08
It scoops Building of the Year title handed out by Singapore Institute of Architects
THE new LaSalle College of the Arts campus complex, a striking array of glass and stone facades linked by bridges, scooped top honours at the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) awards ceremony on Wednesday night.
A panel of five named the complex as Building of the Year and made its designers, RSP Architects Planners and Engineers, the stars of the show at Suntec Convention Centre ceremony.
'We wanted the LaSalle building to integrate with the grain of the city and be dynamic; we accomplished this and we are very happy about the win,' said the company director Pok Siew Fatt.
SIA handed out 21 awards - selected from 157 submissions - including for the best project below $1m in construction cost and the top residential project as well as for interior architecture.
The judging panel included SIA president Tai Lee Siang; the head of National University of Singapore's architecture department, Professor Wong Yunn Chii; and renowned architect Mok Wei Wei.
They evaluated submissions on points such as sustainability, elegance of construction and attention to detail.
