View Full Version : ~Jyväskylä~
Moolio January 20th, 2005, 05:04 PM So here's some images from my hometown. The pics are taken today, and as you can see the weather is just awful, it's been awful for at least the past week. There are a few pics from both, the new Lutakko residential district, and town centre.
The picture quality is downright terrible since it was snowing and I do not own a tripod. Some of the pics I took were so blurry that there was no point whatsoever to include them to this thread. Hopefully you get some idea how my hometown looks like. I'll make a better thread once the weather get's a bit nicer, in weather like this the town just doesn't look very nice. :( In next summer I'll show you guys how pretty this place actually is. :)
So here goes...
Town centre, Kauppakatu street:
IMO one of the liveliest pedestrianised streets in Finland. It's the main shopping street of Jyväskylä.

Sokos is a kind of a mid-priced chain of department stores. You can see them pretty much in every Finnish town of even little significance. It's nice place to spend your time, really. :)
Thanks for your comments, everybody! :)
schmidt January 21st, 2005, 03:45 PM Wow I love Kauppakatu! Those pedestrian streets are really charming. It seems in Finland in every city you go they have pedestrian streets. In Brazil that's not too common.
Beautiful Jyvaskyla :)
NorthStar77 January 21st, 2005, 04:10 PM It is pretty common with pedestrian streets in northern Europe. Every city I've been to in Denmark, Sweden and Norway has them. Even where I studied, Grimstad, with 18.000 people, have it. A village near where I grew up, with 11.000 people have it. Even in the suburban centre where I work, there is a pedestrian street.
Even if it looks like it was a grey day when you took these, it is great to see some snow again!

Beautiful Jyvaskyla :)
Pedestrianised streets are fun. :) Kauppakatu is kinda the core of the town. The weather was so bad when I took the pics that there wasn't that many people, but especially in summertime the street is literally packed with people. There are all these little happenings, like concerts and stuff. As you know, Jyväskylä is a university town, so there are students from all over the world participating in these little happenings. In my neighbourhood (about 2km from the town center) there are exchange students from the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Proportionally, Jyväskylä may be the most international place in Finland. It's a wonderful town to live. :)
Moolio January 21st, 2005, 06:28 PM D-post, sorry.

Hey, so are classes in Jyväskylän Yliopisto are in English? I'd love to study in Finland! :)

Sure. There are teachers from Britain and Ireland (and America, I think). I don't know which classes are in English, but some definitely are. :)

Sorry to say, I hardly knew anything about Jyväskylä until now.
Qualtagh January 28th, 2005, 02:54 AM Very nice photos (excluding the blurry quality). I've visited the growing city of Jyväskylä three times, and really enjoyed my time there. I stayed with my sister who last time lived in one of those new high apartment buildings right ahead Lutakko and Jyväsjärvi bridge. I loved biking my way to downtown through the bridge (it's a bit windy though). At night time the city looks almost beautiful from the bridge, which has cool lightning itself. The downtown is perfectly sized for me and the heated pedestrian street is impressive (looks wider in real life ;)). In the middle of downtown there's a beautiful hill called Harju, where stands a high building called Vesilinna. There's a cafeteria downstairs, and if you take the lift up, you can see the City from the highest position AFAIK. The view was amazing at night.
Just liked to share some positive experiences.
