I don't know why people get so easily offended. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and that's why the voting system is here.

I think the skyline is very good and seems to be adding new buildings/more density monthly. But it still has a ways to go to catch Chicago in terms of more supertalls. I think I gave it an 8.5 but it's moving towards a 9 now. 10 being something like NYC to me.

Toronto hasn't the most and not the Tallest Skyscrapers on Earth but i really love it :). And with the current construction boom it will be even more awesome in the next few years :)

Just the fact that Toronto is being mentioned with those cities (even if it is still a distant 3rd) shows how much the skyline has improved, and is continuing to improve. When I visited 9 years ago, there were only about 10-11 500' towers, which was really unimpressive to me being from Boston (land of the 500' tower). However, now I think there is closer to 30, with no end in sight. Toronto's boom has been AMAZING. It is far and away North America's 3rd best skyline, and the perceived gap with Chicago will most likely close over the next few years.

New York, on the other hand, is about to go to a whole other level with all the supertalls coming, but by 2025 or so, 2nd place in NA might be in reach for Toronto :)

^ Yeah, it's amazing how much the city has changed in such a short period of time. If you include buildings currently under construction, there are 38 500+ foot buildings in the city now, with many more proposed.

Wow. Each shot is more stunning than the last. In my opinion, the waterfront shots are an 8.5. But every other angle it is a straight up 10. The density, the new towers that are adding so much diversity to the skyline...and the way that it is set up. I love how the CDB just dominates, whilst the lower highrises scatter as far as the eye can see.

Actually, in the summer, Toronto gets very hot and humid.

New photos, showing the city going north from about City Hall, but not including any of the business district behind. Construction cranes everywhere.

If I'm right I spotted 6 cranes. Very nice.

I think a supertall would be nice in Toronto.

However, the buildings are pretty boring.

Toronto is ultra conservative when it comes to design. It's the staid Scottish heritage permeating through everything. Whenever something flashy, opulent, or unconventional is proposed, the establishment start going into convulsions.

I used to remark about how boring most of the buildings are, but gave up. It is what it is. There are tons of exquisite buildings all over the city, but they're all very classic or traditional in their design. TD Centre, Commerce Court North, the Royal York, Scotia Plaza, and Royal Bank Plaza are all beautiful buildings, but are about as daring as Toronto will go design wise.

I like to just let the pictures speak for themselves; that way it keeps the mind open. Nice find by Chris!

Toronto really looks more massive in pictures than when I visited it last October. I guess it's cause the roads are more spacious and there are more greeneries in the city than I'm used to. However, I really love the city. I do like to see more creativity in the buildings. Nothing really stands out, but when you put them clusters all together though, they look nice.

I know that many people hate the city hall, but I actually thought it looks better in person than in pictures. I think Toronto is in the top 3 in N America.

It is what it is.... our touristic impressions are based on many factors; what streets or neighbourhoods we visited, if we were driving, or on foot... our mood, if we were drunk/sober/happy/sad.. etc.. There are many cosy little neighbourhoods in Toronto, which can give an impression of being a smaller city, but the photos just show what is there. That last picture is just a projection of what it will be like if and when all of the u/c and proposals are finished.

Downtown really has a big footprint. Interestingly, despite massive intensification the footprint continues to grow at the same time. The core will likely spread all the way east to the Don Valley by 2015 as the West Donlands/East Bayfront get built in time for the Pan American Games.

At that point, I'd rather downtown just got denser and taller. The area bounded in dark green is part of a massive re-development called East Bayfront which ends next to the Don River pictured. As you can see, east of downtown is screaming out for intensification.

So the 88 Scott proposal would block out Commerce Court (CIBC) in that last photo once completed? I'm hoping the block to the south (just west of the flat iron) will get redeveloped. It would be a great spot for a large building.

As much as I love Toronto, not really. Toronto is muuch smaller than Chicago skyline wise, less than even half the size... so it's not passing it anytime soon, even with new development. At the end of the decade, Toronto could have up to or more than 70 150 meter buildings (It currently has far less than that), Chicago already has about 110 or so, minus any current development. Plus Chicago has 4 massive supertalls, Toronto would need a new tallest or two.

I'm not saying Toronto isn't impressive, I'm just saying Chicago is in the top 3 or 5 for world skylines.

As far as population goes I could see Toronto city passing Chicago, mainly because they are laid out differently, Chicagoland as a whole will hit 10 million before the decades end though. If I'm not mistaken Toronto should be up to 7 or 8 million or something like that.

Agree. Toronto's growing like gangbusters, but there's quite a large skyline gap to bridge. There are 75 buildings 150m or taller built/under construction/proposed in Toronto, so even when these are all topped out around 2016, Toronto will need the boom to continue right up to 2020. Maybe in 8-10 years Toronto will have caught up, but there's lots of building still to do. Good times for Toronto.

^^As of the new numbers just released from the 2011 census, the Greater Golden Horseshoe (comparable in area to the Chicago CSA) was at just under 8.7 million people.

I agree that TO's skyline is still behind Chicago, but I don't think it's any smaller (at least not half the size of Chicago's). Chicago's skyline mainly extends along the shore (downtown core), whereas TO's skyline extends far up north into the suburbs along Yonge St for over 10km (if NYC's included probably 15-18km). For instance, none of the "downtowns" of Chicago suburbs are comparable to Scarborough Town Centre, not to mention North York Centre or Square One. There're quite a few project going up on Yonge St. north of Steels (20km north from waterfront) as well and I think that's where the future York region centre will be.

^^Good point. Toronto is unique amongst other cities since it doesn't just build up in one location. Toronto's boroughs and suburbs also have skylines that can rival that of other cities. Imagine if all the highrises/skycrapers in the GTA were put together in one location it would probably be the third best skyline in the world (behind Hong Kong and New York respectively).

Toronto's skyline would look bigger if all the highrises were downtown, but it wouldn't be anywhere close to 3rd. It would be lucky to move up 1 spot considering there's practically nothing over 150m outside of the core.

Warning... these type of city to city comparisons usually spur angry denunciations!
Especially any mention of Toronto and Chicago in the same sentence. Let's not pull the thread off-course! ;)

IMO Toronto & Chicago both have amazing skylines. Wish Melbourne was in the same league (no negative connotations implied with reference to Melbourne either). :cheers:

I don't get all the fuss about Vancouver's condominiums. Would you sooner they be parking lots instead? We'll take what we can get.

The new wave of projects on the go now in Toronto are coming up with new shapes and some new finishes. There is a big difference in the situation of Vancouver and Toronto but I will not get into that here as this thread is just about Toronto.

Don't forget; condos represent people. They represent an increased density, and an increased downtown population. There are a lot of people, including myself, who see this as a good thing and not bad.

There are people who have strong reactions to those condominiums. They're not exactly aesthetically pleasing when the city is so beautiful and naturally blessed. But they serve as great fillers to Toronto's every growing skyline, but wished they had filled in more inland than lined up the coast

They are relatively close to the Harbourfront in the sense that all of downtown is relatively close to the waterfront, but they are not being built on the water's edge. Our city is spread out along the lake; it is not possible to wish that people do not want to move close to a beautiful lakefront in order to enjoy it.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't exactly mean on the edge, but close to it. Either way, Toronto is absolutely beautiful regardless. Im visiting again this April 28 so hopefully I can take some pictures of this beautiful city. Where is the best vantage point to take pictures?

I'd prefer to see more development along the waterfront personally. The view from the Islands is one of the most prominent views of the skyline and arguably one of the worst. The setback of the main cluster makes it appear shorter and you can't see anything beyond it.

yeah from those famous views.. the lake looks nice but Toronto looks like it has a much smaller skyline than it actually have

^^ I understand what you mean, but I think much depends on what a person is looking for. The view from the Toronto Islands provides the wallop of "WOW" factor, because of the lake. You can't see the bulk of the city, as it runs north of the lakefront. But, I wouldn't say the view from the islands is "the worst" ! :) Here are some pics I took three years ago. I think the general line of thought now in our city is that the actual lakefront belongs to everyone and we should avoid building towers right on the edge, but rather try to keep it open to the entire public. But, most of these towers are going up within walking distance of the harbourfront, which in my opinion is ideal; people should be able to live, work and play both downtown and close to the water.
