How many Toronto's skyscraper's are residential use? Are they all commercial use?

Its incredible how much Toronto has come on, its skyline today is booming, 30 years ago it only had a few tall buildings, world class city!

I don't know the actual breakdown, but it is a mix of commercial and residential towers. The photo I showed above is centred on the central business district, and most of those are office towers, but central Toronto has a dense residential population as well, for it is considered highly desirable to live there.

Balance in the Toronto skyline has always been the sole irritant, but less and less so each passing year. That pic above really shows how the skyline is beginning to fill out. Can't wait to see L Tower and Shangri-La from that exact same vantage point. I hope the Theatre Tower proposal comes to fruition too.

I never cared much for Toronto's skyline because not on is there no real significant building (and the CN Tower doesn't count imo because its a needle and extremely common) But it also lacks proportion in its overall skyline appearance. Its come a long way though but far from a 10 in my book...

It is the tallest freestanding structure in NA, is extremely visible, and has a major effect on the way the skyline looks. I can only imagine how many points cities like Chicago lose for being dominated by office buildings which are extremely common - particularly in NA and Asia. :shocked:

The structure itself is a structure not a building (even though some may argue that it is). It's uncommon for cities skylines to be dominated by a structure (which made Seattle, St. Louis, & Paris unique) but given the fact that there are a ton of cities who's skyline is dominated by this same type of structure makes it common. Now if Seattle, Toronto, and Sydney were the only cities on earth with a needle then it'd still be unique. 7.5/10 is a pretty good score since a 5/10 means neither beautiful nor ugly in my book so if its above a 5 then its beautiful... :cheers:

I'd give it a pass. After all, it's missing Bay-Adelaide Centre, Rtiz Carlton, RBC Centre and a good handful of others.

Yes, I noticed that too. I love that pic in that it shows what a big impact Shangri-La will have on the skyline. Along with the CN Tower, FCP, and Scotia Plaza, Shangri-La will be a focal point. The photo below may have been posted before, but deserves another viewing. :colgate:

It was taken from Riverdale Park, which is a lovely hillside park used recreationally in both summer, and for sledding in the winter if there is snow. I took these pics this past summer on a hazy day:

Yeah I just looked up the temp there, it's around -9, we got that in Dublin around Christmas time for a short period. Really nice photo Chris!

We're Canadians, so we are tough! Snow and cold don't stop us or we'd be inside all winter! :D

I have always thought that Toronto's Skyline looks out of proportion with the CN tower dwarfing the rest. lets hope all these new towers can make a difference.

^ I'm not aware of any current plans for a new tallest, and I think it would take taller buildings rather than more buildings to balance the CN.

Toronto has a very good skyline and I like how the CN tower stands seperate from the tall buildings. However, all the scrapers are square, boring boxes.

Beyond the scrapers it seems to give way to very small buildings pretty quickly. Again something perculiar to American cities.

Needs more character and more special modern supertalls. 7.5/10.

North American cities do tend to give way to low rise very quickly, but it's partly an optical illusion. The central core of a city like Toronto is far taller than what one would see in London or Frankfurt so the scale looks puny 30 blocks away when in fact those buildings 30 blocks from the core are still 10-30 floors high.

Another factor is that having very tall office buildings downtown negates the need for lots of medium sized office buildings. Instead of thousands of medium sized buildings stretching for 10 km, you can have the same square footage packed into 100-200 buildings of far greater height concentrated over 1-2 km.

Character? Toronto's character is best seen at street level. The new buildings are so much larger than the older buildings that those charming old buildings get lost or completely blocked out by the new. Even buildings like the Royal York Hotel and Commerce Court North (dominant when they were built in the 1920s) are almost unnoticeable in today's skyline shots.

9.5 I've always loved this skyline, but finally seeing it in person blew my mind.

When I went in 2002, I found myself rather disappointed, but since then Toronto has more than doubled its amount of 500'+ buildings and shows no signs of slowing down. I don't think it's worthy of a 10, but it WILL be. Thus, this is one of those cities where I am going to continue to abstain from voting until it reaches its potential. See you in a couple years with that 10 ;)

This past decade has been dizzying.. the amount of construction and growth is phenomenal, and much more than was ever predicted. It is showing no signs of letting up, with new projects being announced constantly... :shocked:

Ironically, this thread began back in 2002, the year you visited our city!

Never seen so many tower cranes at one time. Our driver pointed them out during a recent visit and as we headed from the Don Valley Expressway along the lakeshore freeway toward the airport, we counted over 50 in action.

Plus there are some big foundation holes already dug, bound to be more cranes added soon. Lot of money being spent there.

i think this is the best in canada, though i really can't come up with a more objective comparison since i've only been to vancouver and not in this city... but judging from the photos posted, toronto is number one... hands down...

9/10 definetly the best skyline in Canada and #3 in North America.

Regardless, most of it is beyond the proposal stage so it is likely to look very close to that. If it all pans out, Toronto is really going to cement its position as one of the great skyline cities. I may even have to bump it up a notch. I have it rated 8.5/10, but it may move up to a 9/10 by 2014. :okay:
