Are they all commercial use? IrishMan2010 September 18th, 2010, 07:57 PM Its incredible how much Toronto has come on, its skyline today is booming, 30 years ago it only had a few tall buildings, world class city! Taller, Better September 18th, 2010, 08:02 PM How many Toronto's skyscraper's are residential use? Are they all commercial use? I don't know the actual breakdown, but it is a mix of commercial and residential towers. The photo I showed above is centred on the central business district, and most of those are office towers, but central Toronto has a dense residential population as well, for it is considered highly desirable to live there. Taller, Better September 19th, 2010, 03:17 PM Chris has found another nice picture! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4127/4994226795_60ea683185_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/beachdigital/4994226795/in/photostream/ isaidso September 21st, 2010, 01:50 AM Balance in the Toronto skyline has always been the sole irritant, but less and less so each passing year. That pic above really shows how the skyline is beginning to fill out. Can't wait to see L Tower and Shangri-La from that exact same vantage point. A great little tour of Toronto! ChitownCity October 7th, 2010, 05:22 PM I gave it a 7.5/10 just to be nice by giving a couple points because of street level in some areas. I never cared much for Toronto's skyline because not on is there no real significant building (and the CN Tower doesn't count imo because its a needle and extremely common) But it also lacks proportion in its overall skyline appearance. Its come a long way though but far from a 10 in my book... Its come a long way though but far from a 10 in my book...I'm not sure how you figure that the CN Tower "doesn't count". It is the tallest freestanding structure in NA, is extremely visible, and has a major effect on the way the skyline looks. And if you're subtracting points for things being "common" it is much more common for cities to not have an observation tower than to have one. I can only imagine how many points cities like Chicago lose for being dominated by office buildings which are extremely common - particularly in NA and Asia. MysticMcGoo October 8th, 2010, 02:37 AM ^^People from NY, Chicago and HK tend to be harsher critics when judging skylines. I mean, people from those three cities are just super spoiled to have such great downtowns. They generally use their own city as a benchmark, and nothing ever measures up. So getting a 7.5 from a Chicagoan is probably the same as getting an 8.5 or 9 from the average skyscraper enthusiast. What city one comes from shouldn't make any difference unless people aren't capable of being objective. I'm assuming, of course, that people know a little about the world beyond their tiny neck of the woods. neilio October 8th, 2010, 05:16 PM I gave it a 7.5/10 just to be nice by giving a couple points because of street level in some areas. Its come a long way though but far from a 10 in my book... First Canadian place = significant building that stands out from the rest. And its funny how you can walk around inside the CN Tower and everywhere you look there are many structural elements commonly contained in BUILDINGS. Defining in your opinion what is and what is not a building is walking a fine line really, this argument being used a lot back in the days of city vs city by people who had a hate-on for Toronto. And no it is not common, its very recognizable in its shape and there is nothing exactly like it. If you examine the design of the tower outside and inside there is NOTHING "Common" about it at all. Proportion is subject to ones tastes, I think the balance of the skyline from the water front looks great with most of city place built, a far more interesting design than most city's with a mountain, a needle in the middle and another mountain lol, Rather than a continuous flat roof like New York. From other angle's the lack of proportion "in my opinion" tends to give parts of the city a "common" look while putting much emphasis or exaggerating the impact of the main cluster. Something greater seen in person than photo's. Taller, Better October 8th, 2010, 06:38 PM I do hope this doesn't slide into a Chicago vs Toronto discussion. Something greater seen in person than photo's. Of course its not common by design (I don't think any needle is) what I meant by common is there are a ton of cities that have them so its nothing unique (like the Eiffel Tower or St. Louis Arch thing) ChitownCity October 12th, 2010, 06:06 PM How is the CN tower common? ... the CN Tower itself is not common but its type of structure is: Vancouver, Niagra Falls, Calgary, Seattle, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Sydney, Johannesburg, & Shanghai just to name a few. Plus I know there's quite a few in Europe (I know Berlin and Rotterdam have one) ChitownCity October 12th, 2010, 06:16 PM I'm not sure how you figure that the CN Tower "doesn't count". I can only imagine how many points cities like Chicago lose for being dominated by office buildings which are extremely common - particularly in NA and Asia. The structure itself is a structure not a building (even though some may argue that it is). It's uncommon for cities skylines to be dominated by a structure (which made Seattle, St. Louis, & Paris unique) but given the fact that there are a ton of cities who's skyline is dominated by this same type of structure makes it common. Now if Seattle, Toronto, and Sydney were the only cities on earth with a needle then it'd still be unique. 7.5/10 is a pretty good score since a 5/10 means neither beautiful nor ugly in my book so if its above a 5 then its beautiful... Taller, Better October 12th, 2010, 08:52 PM Yes, ChitownCity, I think we have gotten the gist of what you are saying by now! You can, if you like in the future, collect all similar responses to the same subject in one reply instead of making multiple single entries. Though not as much as Chicago tends to. It's a Canadian Chicago. Beyond the scrapers it seems to give way to very small buildings pretty quickly. Again something perculiar to American cities. Needs more character and more special modern supertalls. 7.5/10. North American cities do tend to give way to low rise very quickly, but it's partly an optical illusion. The central core of a city like Toronto is far taller than what one would see in London or Frankfurt so the scale looks puny 30 blocks away when in fact those buildings 30 blocks from the core are still 10-30 floors high. Another factor is that having very tall office buildings downtown negates the need for lots of medium sized office buildings. Instead of thousands of medium sized buildings stretching for 10 km, you can have the same square footage packed into 100-200 buildings of far greater height concentrated over 1-2 km. Character? Toronto's character is best seen at street level. The new buildings are so much larger than the older buildings that those charming old buildings get lost or completely blocked out by the new. Even buildings like the Royal York Hotel and Commerce Court North (dominant when they were built in the 1920s) are almost unnoticeable in today's skyline shots. It's not a true depiction of what Toronto looks like today, but a depiction of what it might look like in 3-4 years. Regardless, most of it is beyond the proposal stage so it is likely to look very close to that. If it all pans out, Toronto is really going to cement its position as one of the great skyline cities. I may even have to bump it up a notch. I have it rated 8.5/10, but it may move up to a 9/10 by 2014. :okay: SO143 April 20th, 2011, 10:51 PM http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5303/5638251097_a30d41814b_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/naushad_ali_husein/5638251097/sizes/l/in/photostream/ http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5183/5638280699_e6aff8cd19_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/deanbarnes/5638280699/sizes/l/in/photostream/ http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5225/5635273176_70decce89d_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/13365660@N08/5635273176/sizes/l/in/photostream/ SO143 April 21st, 2011, 02:23 AM e8cqJWkay3Y christos-greece April 21st, 2011, 12:07 PM ^^ Nice video and very nice tour around Toronto Looking/Up April 21st, 2011, 03:54 PM http://farm1.static.flickr.com/32/60709907_f64896609b_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/cadmanof50s/60709907/ mossimoh April 21st, 2011, 08:57 PM Some awesome pics, thanks for posting.
