Molik's got a better chance of winning the Open than Hewitt imo. I'd rate her as favorite to win actually. Hers is comparable with the big guns of women's tennis, Hewitt has been under par compared with Agassi, Roddick, and Federer.

No worries I say for Molik, should she keep her nerve and her current play. Hewitt will need to step up for Roddick though in the semis (i think) and Federer/Agassi in the finals, should he be lucky enough to end up there.

I think Hewitt has the better chance then Molik. Molik has world no 1 next (Lindsay Davenport). while Hewitt has winner of tonights match-corin/Nalbandian .he just beat the winner and advance to semis. not sure who he will then face .
It would be great for oz tennis if Molik actually won. anything can happen.

Hewitt, Molik advance to last eight

http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/large/b_0118_amolik_01.jpg

Australian hopes Lleyton Hewitt and Alicia Molik have both progressed to the quarter finals of the Australian Open after recording strong victories at Melbourne Park.

Hewitt has overcome a determined challenge from Spaniard Rafael Nadal, eventually winning in four sets, while Molik needed just two sets to end the challenge of Venus Williams.

Hewitt battled injury and a courageous performance from the 18-year-old playing his first Grand Slam fourth round match before eventually winning 7-5 3-6 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in four hours.

The world number three was broken in the opening game of the match but leveled the set at 2-2 and, after surviving repeated break points in the ninth game, eventually broke Nadal in the 12th to claim the advantage.

Hewitt broke again in the second game of the second set, but Nadal broke back immediately and, buoyed by his swift response, broke the Australian's serve in the seventh game, then again in the ninth to level the match.

The third set belonged to the Spaniard also as Hewitt began to struggle to make position and, uncharacteristically, a high number of unforced errors began to creep into the third seed's game.

Nadal claimed a double break and went on to take the set 6-1, then the third seed called for a trainer in the break and it became apparent that he was struggling with a hip complaint.

After receiving treatment, Hewitt made his way gingerly back onto the court and set about retrieving the situation as best he could but, despite setting up a number of opportunities, was unable to crack Nadal's serve.

Hewitt eventually claimed the set in a tie-breaker however and, with that, Nadal's challenge began to falter as the 18-year-old was himself forced to seek assistance from a trainer.

The third seed rolled through the fifth set, building in confidence and looking far more agile as he claimed a double break before serving out the match.

Hewitt will face the winner of tonight's clash between Argentines Guillermo Coria and David Nalbandian for a place in the semi-finals.

Molik took it up to the American star from the very first game and failed to crack despite increasing pressure from the tournament's eighth seed, eventually winning 7-5 7-6 (7-3).

Seeded 10th, Molik was on her game from the very first point and grabbed the first break of Williams' serve in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead.

Williams reacted like a true champion, immediately breaking back, but as the set wore on it became apparent that it was the Aussie who was playing the better tennis, belying the underdog status that she had been labeled with pre-match.

With the set looking to be heading for a tie-breaker, Molik pressed again on the Williams serve in the 12th game and came up trumps, breaking to take the set 7-5.

The American lifted another cog as expected in the second set, but if she thought that would be enough to crack Molik, it was a mistake as the Australian had other ideas.

The set stayed on serve throughout and, although Williams managed to earn five break-point opportunities to Molik's one, the Australian held her nerve and pushed for the tie-breaker.

After a close line call gave Molik the first point on her serve, Williams appeared to drop her head slightly and the local hope quickly gained a double mini-break to lead 5-2 in the tie-breaker.

Williams managed to grab one point back off Molik's serve but the 10th seed could taste the victory and eventually celebrated as the American miscued a forehand into the net on the first match point.

Hewitt to face Roddick in semis
Sportal

Lleyton Hewitt will face Andy Roddick in the semi-finals of the Australian Open after securing a five-set win over Argentine David Nalbandian at Melbourne Park on Wednesday night.

Hewitt progressed after beating Nalbandian 6-3 6-2 1-6 3-6 10-8, while Roddick eased into the semi-finals following the withdrawal of Russian Nikolay Davydenko from their quarter-final.

The men's third seed looked to be in control against the Argentine early in the match, racing to a two-set lead but Nalbandian fought back hard, dropping just one game in the third set, then claiming three breaks of serve in the fourth set as Hewitt began to struggle again with a hip flexor injury.

But, in his trademark style, Hewitt rallied in the deciding set as the two combatants played out a memorable contest.

The marathon final set lasted for more than 100 minutes and featured only one break of serve - which came in the 17th game and ultimately proved decisive for the Australian.

On Nalbandian's serve, Hewitt had a break-point and attacked a short ball, meeting it on the full in mid-court and driving a backhand down the line to secure the crucial break of serve in the fifth set to lead 9-8.

The Australian's serve had been under more pressure than the Argentine's but with a sniff of victory, Hewitt raced to a 40-0 lead and needed only one match point to win a see-sawing contest.

Davydenko pulled out of his contest with Roddick midway through the third set when the American was leading 6-3 7-5 4-1.

The Russian was not showing any clear signs of injury and was thought to have been affected by the heat as temperatures soared into the 30s on Rod Laver Arena

Serena downs Maria in Aus Open thriller
Sportal

Serena Williams has beaten Maria Sharapova to reach the Australian Open final and gain some measure of revenge for defeats in two huge matches last year.

The 2003 champion and seventh seed looked down and out several times throughout the match, but fought back when 17-year-old Sharapova served for the match in both the second and third sets, saving three match points, to prevail 2-6 7-5 8-6 in 159 minutes.

Sharapova downed Williams in both the Wimbledon and season-ending Tour Championships finals last year, but just like she did two years ago in the corresponding round against Kim Clijsters, Williams saved match points to get through.

Having not defended her title 12 months ago as she recovered from injury, Williams will be bidding for her 14th successive win at Melbourne Park in Saturday's final against either top-seeded compatriot Lindsay Davenport or French No.19 seed Nathalie Dechy.

After Williams held in the opening game of the match, she was unable to do so in either the third or fifth games as she struggled to find her rhythm and Sharapova took full toll to win five games in a row en route to taking the set in 30 minutes.

And though Williams lifted considerably in the second set as she fought to avoid suffering her first loss in Melbourne since 2001, her title aspirations looked all but gone when No.4 seed Sharapova broke her in the ninth game.

Not only did Williams break back though, but she did it again in the 12th game to put the match back on an even keel after a 63-minute set and appeared to have all the momentum.

Sharapova did break Williams in the first game of the third set, but dropped her own serve for the third straight time to hand the advantage straight back, and it was Sharapova who appeared to be tiring more noticeably.

But she then broke Williams in the seventh game to set up another chance to serve for the match, and though she had three match points in the 10th game, again Williams raised her game to stay in contention, before a final break in the 14th game signalled her win

Fair enough Sharapovas grunting is annoying, but she is far easier on the eyes than Serena Williams is!! Serena Williams looks like she has got 2 basketballs shoved down the back of those way-too-short shorts that she wears. Not a good sight at all.

On the Hewitt vs Roddick front, i like Hewitts chances actually, he's got a good record against him, he's playing in front of his home crowd, he so badly wants to win the Australian Open. Fair enough he's having trouble with that hip, but with his fighting spirit, you would have to be a fool to write him off.

While his theatrics have divided viewers, Lleyton Hewitt's gritty march to the Australian Open semi-finals has been wonderful theatre. Almost half of all national television viewers on Wednesday tuned in for his epic clash with Argentina's David Nalbandian.

Since the event started 11 days ago, Hewitt and Alicia Molik have captivated the Australian consciousness, bringing in record attendances for Tennis Australia, delivering Channel Seven knockout ratings and consigning Nine's one-day cricket series to a distant second.

A Tennis Australia spokesman, John Lindsay, said the tournament was expected to top its previous best turnout: "The two Australians that people predicted - plus the other big names - have all played cracking tennis, the weather's been great, even a couple of stinking hot days haven't kept the numbers down."

The record attendance was achieved in 2001, when 543,843 viewers visited Melbourne Park.

By the beginning of play yesterday, with four days still remaining, 462,440 spectators had passed through the gates.

Last Saturday the competition had set an all-time record for any grand-slam event when it attracted 60,669, he said.
AdvertisementAdvertisement

"We would expect about 30,000 people for today, and 15,000 for the last three days each, so somewhere over 530,000 all up," Mr Lindsay said.

Hewitt's five-set effort against Nalbandian was watched by an average national audience of 2,184,312. Channel Seven captured 48.1 per cent of viewers for the evening.

In contrast, the one-day cricket match between Australia and the West Indies on Nine reached an average of 1,232,050 viewers.

A Nine spokesman said: "Comparing the ratings of this annual local grand-slam event, which has been made to order via the success of Hewitt and Molik, with non-championship rounds of the cricket one-day tri-series is like comparing chalk and cheese.

"The cricket finals start late next week when the tennis is over. They'll rate well too."

Tennis Australia estimates the tournament will deliver a $210 million windfall for the Victorian Government.

Hewitt reaches final

Lleyton Hewitt rallied from a set down to beat Andy Roddick and become the first local since Pat Cash to reach the Australian Open final.

Roddick dominated the opening set as Hewitt appeared to be struggling with an illness, but the Australian fought back to secure the next two in tie-breakers, and with the momentum in his favour and the crowd behind him he ran away to win 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 in 174 minutes.

Hewitt will now meet Russian Marat Safin in Sunday's final – to be played at night for the first time - who ended the campaign of defending champion Roger Federer in five sets on Thursday night.

The two have met ten times previously with the results split down the middle, 5-5.

Roddick secured the opening set with a supreme serving display that included six aces in the ninth game. Hewitt had seven break points, but couldn't capitalise on any.

But the momentum neutralised in the second set as neither player was able to conjure any breaks. Hewitt capitalised on a serving lapse from Roddick in the tie-breaker to level the match at a set all, and then also recovered from a break down in the third.

After breaking in the second game of the third set to lead 3-0, Roddick handed the advantage back in the seventh game to concede his serve for the first time.

Hewitt trailed 1-3 in the tie-breaker, but stage a dramatic turnaround to claim six of the next seven points to grab a decisive lead.

The world No.3 quickly steamrolled to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set, and though Roddick had the chance to break back in the fifth game, Hewitt resisted the pressure and broke again in the sixth game before serving out the match to complete the comeback.

How was the atmosphere with the roof closed. It wasn't raining just before the match started and didn't rain during the match so I don't know why the roof was closed.

Just doesn't feel right watching on tv with the roof closed during the day. Seems a bit flat.

was fine, they opened it up just after the ceremony. in terms of comfort though: very humid, very very humid actually.

things were a lot quieter too, someone coughing right up the back on the other side was clearly heard along with every fucking numpty who can't read the 'TURN OFF YOUR MOBILE PHONE' when they go in the door

was at a women's Semi-final and men's final two years ago, both times it was boiling hot and roof open, although had good seats (further back from where I was sitting) and was only in the sun for 30 mins. I definitely prefer roof open though.

But then again, the match wasn't that interesting, Serena looked like she was going to die on court, stepping (not launching like she usually does) over the baseline on her serve, and subtle 'yelps' in the first set, looked like Davenport was going to flatten her, but .... nup, she opened a can of something when she went off court after 5 games.

lol.

If there was ever a case for captial punishment its for those morons who can't turn off their phones. :D

Its sometimes hard to get into those matches between the women heavy hitters. plan A is hit hard and when that fails plan B is to hit even harder. Makes for some dull matches. Today was a bit like that unfortunately.

You aren't so lucky to have tickets for tomorrow are you? :)

Tennis players are getting paid far too much when a player can show as little interest or effort as Lindsay Davenport showed in the last set and a half today. especially when you're playing for a Grand Slam title and the difference between $600,000 and $1.2M

Nah.

Davenport has been doing that for years.

Good luck to the women getting more money.

Crowd to set a new record
By CARLY CRAWFORD

ATTENDANCE at this year's Australian Open is tipped to set a record.

A string of heart-stopping matches and the success of Australians Lleyton Hewitt and Alicia Molik have drawn strong crowds on each of the 14 days of the tournament.
With the last day left to play, attendance figures yesterday already had eclipsed last year's total.

Tennis Australia officials said 524,600 people squeezed through the turnstiles in the first 13 days of the Open's 100th year.

That compares with 505,634 in the first 13 days last year, when total attendance reached 521,691.

Sports-mad Aussies and the international guests made Grand Slam history on January 22 – the crowd of 60,669 was the highest one-day attendance recorded at any grand slam, smashing the 58,000 mark set at the US Open last year.

Tonight's match between Hewitt and Russian Marat Safin is tipped to take the total attendance to a new high. The Open's attendance record of 543,843 was set in 2001.

I'm not sure if it was the case of Hewitt fading away in the middle sets or Safin stepping up to his A-game.

The big thing this morning is that Hewitt and Bec Cartwright are now engaged!!!! He proposed to her at 3am this morning and she said "yes". He was planning to propose if he won but proceeded with it anyway.

On the game itself, Safin serve on the night was too good.

Hewitt set to take a break
Sportal

Beaten Australian Open finalist Lleyton Hewitt has revealed he will not play competitive tennis again until March's Davis Cup tie against Austria in Sydney.

Hewitt, beaten in four sets by Marat Safin in the final after a memorable campaign at Melbourne Park, told the Sydney Morning Herald that he had always intended to rest after the year's first Grand Slam.

"I'm not playing until the Davis Cup in Sydney," Hewitt said. "I've known that the whole time."

"That's why I decided to do all my hard work leading into the Australian summer, and basically through December and through the hot period, and get used to the conditions and everything and get my body in as good a shape as possible."

"I was going to give myself the best possible chance here, knowing that I was going to have a rest straight afterwards."

"I tried to focus on getting through the four weeks of hard tournaments in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and then get my break afterwards."
