Fabio January 26th, 2005, 02:45 AM wow pretty awesome, the best pics I've ever ssaw from St. John's. :okay: Joev July 18th, 2005, 06:53 AM I am posting the rest of the thread here; these are all pics I took in the fall of 2004, with some additions & info: St. John's is the easternmost city in North America, sometimes called the oldest city, with history dating to the 1600's; it has a Metro population about 180,000. While the province's population has been in decline in recent years, St.John's has still shown some steady growth, especially because of the offshore oil industry, mostly with new suburban development in and outside the city. However, the real charm and uniqeness is in the old downtown, most of which was rebuilt after the last major fire in 1892. However, there are still buildings such as the Basilica, built in 1850, which predate the fire. http://upload.pbase.com/joecanada/image/49728778/original.jpg View from Queen's Battery, Signal Hill http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/35505436/large.jpg From farther up the hill, showing some of the cliffs above The Narrows. http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/35505287.jpg View of the Harbour from above Duckworth Street. http://upload.pbase.com/joecanada/image/48015547/large.jpg View above Water St East. http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36579170.jpg Buildings on Duckworth Street: http://upload.pbase.com/image/48016038.jpg Corner of Water & George Street (where all the pubs are). http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/34731704.jpg More Water Street buildings. http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36534605/large.jpg St Patricks Hall (condos) & Basilica http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/35515877.jpg Victoria Street downtown residential http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/35515957.jpg The newer highrises in West downtown http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/38877753/original.jpg Government House, built about 1830 http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37307406.jpg Gower Street central downtown residential, "Second Empire" style architecture predominates, from about 1893 http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37307690.jpg Delta Hotel extension under construction in 2004 http://upload.pbase.com/image/48015345.jpg From across the harbour, a mixture of old & new. Atlantic Place, the brick building on the right, is the largest office building, at around 300,000 sq ft., and was originally built to support a hotel on top, with a total height of twenty stories. The three gabled building on top of the hill is not a church, it's the new Art Gallery-Museum-Archives, called "The Rooms", built in 2004. http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36528750/original.jpg Seagulls with a view across the East end of the harbour http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/41924560/large.jpg Overlooking Water Street. http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36818499.jpg St Patricks Church dates from 1800's, but the spire was complete in 1914, and replaced a few years ago: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36528880.jpg The Basilica, a landmark, was built in 1850 http://img115.exs.cx/img115/6672/basilicastatues2004x7pq.jpg More steep streets overlooking the harbour http://img115.exs.cx/img115/3812/hollowaystreet1x0ir.jpg Central Water Street looking west http://img115.exs.cx/img115/395/waterstreetonex9zs.jpg?blah Colourful row on Duckworth Street http://img115.exs.cx/img115/5839/duckworthcolour1x0xj.jpg Another view from the hill: http://img115.exs.cx/img115/3060/basilicafromqueensbattery1x0hz.jpg Another view of downtown central and West End: http://img115.exs.cx/img115/9121/sjskyline4x2st.jpg Three of my favourite houses: http://img115.exs.cx/img115/8098/henryst3houses2x6ry.jpg Harbour Drive; the white Fortis building is the oldest modern office tower, built around 1968 http://img115.exs.cx/img115/2989/harbourdrivex5zz.jpg The road to Signal Hill; the sinking building is an underground Geo-Science-Centre: http://img120.exs.cx/img120/2716/southcottview1x6pr.jpg Water Street: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/34732831.jpg Courthouse: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36534606.jpg Battery, at the harbour entrance: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/36528455.jpg Water Street: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/41175995.jpg Gower Street old residential: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37308220.jpg Old mansion: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/41337690/medium.jpg Mt St Francis Monastery. http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37308534/large.jpg Cabot Tower, Signal Hill: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37307356/large.jpg Colonial Building was the old Legislature until 1959: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37307372.jpg Confederation Building (Legislature) overlooks the city; it was built in 1959: http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/37400764/large.jpg Panorama; Scroll ---> http://www.pbase.com/joecanada/image/42475982/original.jpg Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting (http://www.imageshack.us) Hope you enjoyed.
