The Los Angeles Angels of Anahiem
• what's the thinking on the name change in LA?
• what's the thinking on the name change in OC?
• will it spice up Dodgers vs. Angels?
• will it have the marketing effect the Angels think it will?
• does anyone really think "of Anahiem" is going to be stressed at all (or even be a permanent part of the name)?

wow, i'm surprised no one posted on this...i guess it just goes to show you the apathy of most LA sports fans, but if you ask me....
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Dodger fan, and I think that most people, both in LA and the OC, are opposed to this name change (or they just don't care either way....apathy, remember?). To understand this reaction, you must first understand the ongoing dynamic between LA and the OC.
LA (downtown) and the OC are about 30-45 mins. apart. The OC began essentially as a suburb of LA, but in the last 20 or so years has really sought to differentiate itself from LA. Thus, the naming/renaming of all the sports teams in the OC to reflect its area, i.e. the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and the Angels, which used to be called the California Angels.
The name change is obviously a sly marketing ploy by the new Angels owner, Art Moreno, who is trying to broaden his teams fan base. The ad campaign has even gone as far as plastering red billboards all over downtown LA with the Angels logo, reading "City of Angels."
Now if you couldn't tell by now, what with all the typing that I've done on this subject, this really ticks off Angelenos (the ones that care). But what most people unfamiliar with Southern California don't know is that IT PISSES PEOPLE OFF IN ANAHEIM EVEN MORE! They spent all those years trying to establish their own identity, and the Angels even won a World Series as recently as 2002 under the banner of Anaheim. To these people, the name change represents a desire to be part of LA...in other words, OC BLASPHEMY!!
Well, that's just my opinion, I'm sure there's others out there who feel differently.

"The Brooklyn Dodgers, of Los Angeles"
Yeah, that's stupid. Change the name back.

Yeah, I didn't see any real point in why they changed the name. They should have just kept it the same.

I always thought that most people in LA viewed the Angels as a team to root for as well as the Dodgers. I know plenty of Angels fans who live near me. If I were a resident of Anaheim, I would be very upset by this decision.

True...there are Angel fans in LA, no doubt...probably some Dodger fans in OC. I'm also probably biased

There are plenty of dodger fans in the OC, as is evident by the crowds at the Ed during Freeway series games. As a Dodger fan i dont mind the name change at all. The LA name has a much stronger pull and will increase the revenues for the team. they are tapped out in terms of ticket revenue because they sell out most of thier games, so this is the only way to increase the money instead of raising prices. by the way, the Angels are already at 27,000 season tickets plus a couple thousand other packages and they have sold around 2.5 million tickets for the upcoming season, so expect to see a lot of sell outs and record attendace. i dont think the name change will add anything to the rivalry, but both teams being competative for a consistent years will definitley change the flavor and add to it. Its headed in the right direction though. I guess the marketing aspect of this name change ahs produced the goals they wanted, considering all the tickets they sold and all the publicity it has garnered.

I support the name change. I think it's absolutely smart!
