South Africa definitely dominates in this regard. I even think some cities in South Africa have better skylines than many cities in 1rst world/western nations.

Abidjan in Cote d'Ivore is another good one.

I don't think we're in the Top 20 just yet. We need to do a bit of modernising. Thankfully that's currently being done in full force - especially in Johannesburg. We're also seeing very nice additions to skylines, such as Cape Town's Portside development, which will be the tallest (and sexiest!) building in the city, as well as the Sandton City office tower, which is 80F and will be the tallest on the continent when completed. It's about time something take over from the now ageing Carlton Centre as tallest building.

Personally im in love with the moderate skyline of the city of Tanger. Not really highrise (perhaps like 30 floors max or something), but its kind of dense. This city is THE booming city next to Marrakech i gues, so perhaps in the near future it will get a real skyline. Untill then the city looks like this:

Well, im not sure if it is "unfortunately". Because when i look at Tanger like that, a huge tall skyscraper wouldnt fit in there. But Casablanca is a different thing. We already have some high buildings there.

^^ Orlando... it doesn't have a cool skyline at all, or a city with this massive amazing vibe either. I completely agree with the people on that one. Orlando's skyline is one of the most mediocre in the south-east (have lived there, know first hand). No building is taller than SunTrust Building at only 120m tall, and the city centre, other than the clubs and bars on Orange Avenue, is mostly soulless, lacking in history and very clinical and corporate. Plus, unlike many cities, it has nothing to "anchor" it's city, no mountain, no harbour, no river, no valley, just an overgrown pond in the form of Lake Eola (which is quaint and pretty but nothing world-class) and an ugly ribbon of concrete called the I-4 freeway running smack-bang through it.

in most cases the concentration a of people in urban areas in africa is much last than thoses in europe so theres no need to go tall + african countries are in a development stage

Just because their towers may not be that tall doesn't mean it isn't attractive.

I mean, look at some of the skylines of India and Brazil, they are jam packed and overcrowded with tall, not so attractive, Tower blocks and their skylines are not that appealing, for the most part.

Well, Cape Town has no business looking like New York City or Dubai, If Cape Town had building like Dubai, you can't see Table Mountain and it just becomes another random city where you can't see the sky.

2) What do you expect the world to do? Demolish buildings every few years as design trends change?

I just hope they restrict the height of buildings outside of the CBD. I like the leafy suburbs. I hope it does not look like Dubai, Singapore City. Lagos as the commercial Capital can accommodate super high rise buildings. Take a look at picutres from SA (Pretoria), USA (Washigton), Brazil (Brasila) and a host of other cities. I hope no cluster in Abuja.

Well, Lagos would look pretty nice with skyscrapers but the infastructure of Lagos is a little on the outdated side so I'm not sure if it can handle too many skyscrapers, is there an infastructure update campaign that is going on?

I agree that Detroit has alot to do but Newark, Baltimore and some of the other cities listed have done alot to improve. Please remember that we don't see pics of slums and I would argue that the slums in SA many other African countries are far worse than what you see in the states.

Most definitely,everybody from the JSE to ZTE are located in Sandton.The JHB CBD isn't a ghost town though,many scrapers are occupied by the big banks.

Amazing!!! especially the CBD area. Have the govt started the road layout yet? I suppose the main development of the plots in the CBD area will come from private capital, foreign embassies, banks and the like.
Conceptually, are the people of Tanzania accepting of the fact that Dodoma is the place to be.
Dodoma was conceived about the same time Abuja was, that is why I was asking if any infrastructural work has started, Main Trunk roads, Water and Electricity. Unless the govt commits to the projects, private capital will become less enthused to take notice.

not yet but work is underway and i think all the residents of the area have been notified and waiting for compensation to leave the area for projects to start, the project is privately owned i think. so many people are questioning whether the government is moving to dodoma too, in my oipinion Dar es salaam remain the commercial and cultural city of Tanzania.

DSM is getting more confident in building taller structures as time goes. If you look recently, many buildings u/c are between 20-27 storey but this year we are seeing projects upto 35 storey.Offcourse we are eagerly waiting for Mchikichini heights (various towers from 17 upto 50 storeys) to start.

DSM is getting more confident in building taller structures as time goes. If you look recently, many buildings u/c are between 20-27 storey but this year we are seeing projects upto 35 storey.Offcourse we are eagerly waiting for Mchikichini heights (various towers from 17 upto 50 storeys) to start.

Nairob where the savanah starts, grn city under the sun Biggest closest city to the Equator in the entire world. Formae owners of the Kilimanjaro b4 the british gave it away as a birthday gift to the queen who in turn sold it to the Tanzanians
