At least the plots on Home & Away are better than the trashy American soap shows. You get action on H &A such as disasters etc. American soaps just focus on the romance side.

Spot on. :okay:

If it's a @#$% show, then why is it winning logie awards at all??? The awards say something good about the program. The acting talent I believe is just as good as neighbours.

Also if it's #@$%, then why have networks in more than 70 countries decided to air the program along with "localised" versions of the program.

As for what happens in Summer Bay - all big TV dramas feature a diverse range of plots and events. It's the only way to keep the programs going.

Cool - a thread where we can bag Home & Away

One of the only drawbacks of being married is when your wife watches this shitefest (females don't seem to have a crap-detector when it comes to TV man, how else do you explain the longevity of McLeods Daughters, All Saints etc)

So what makes Home & Away such a craptacular piece of sputum on the toilet bowl that is Australian Television? Let me count the ways...

Rhys
AKA The fugliest man on Television
AKA That dude with NO CHIN!
Tell me how this man got onto TV in the first place let alone pulled off no less than 3 affairs during his time on this show, and no, to my surprise these affairs weren't with farm animals (a beleivable plot line perhaps) they were with actual women, who never seemed to realise when they were kissing this sod that he had No Chin whatsoever.

Colleen
I think that's her name - you know the one I'm talking about - the Esme Watson of the century, whenever theres a need to propell an already ludicrous plot thread through the permutation of idol gossip they just wheel out this old bag and off she goes, then it turns out she's the mother to Lance who was one of the old cast members - obviously life on the dole wasn't kind to that actor because he had to return to this!.

More later...

Jimmy James

I continue...

Same Character, Different Actor

In the world of TV this is a shark jump, I remember the town doctor aged about 10 years and got a haircut all in the space of one night and then I realised they'd switched the actor; I also have a faint memory of Judy Nunn taking a month off and the voice over guy anouncing that "Tonight - the role of Ailsa will be played by..."

I'm sorry we're not talking about Shakespeare here, people don't line up at NIDA to essay the role of Mr Fisher just write a new part, how hard is that.

That kid with the glasses

You know the one I'm talking about he stepped on a used syringe in a camping ground (just a question - how many heavy drug users do you know that go camping out a national parks?) now he's turned evil or sullen or something who knows; my real beef with this fruit is that he was side by side with that girl for the better part of a year and then she wants to bed him, and he says he'd rather wait? WTF!!! I'm sorry, I know they probably wrote it in as some sort of PSA about abstinence or something but unless he turns out gay in some later episode I ain't buying it!

Max
Luckily someone saw the shark coming and they wrote out this little twit before he singlehandedly brought down the Seven Network with his precocious "I'm a kid but I'm smarter than the lot of you" act straight out of the American Sitcom playbook. Want an example, I remember one time he Ghost Wrote a Novel and tried to fake that the old bag wrote it (a story lifted straight from "Paperback Hero") now when I was 10 I could barely Ghost Write my own name and this kid's writing a novel, at this rate Wesley Crusher will be showing up in the bay to discover fusion!

"The City"
Who's with me on this one, anyone with half a brain can figure out the show is set on the NSW coast (probably the north coast given how sunny it always seems to be) always characters are going to the "City" why can't they F&%$6#@*& say that they're going to SYDNEY, SYDNEY just say it, is someone @ CH 7 afraid that if they mention sydney the other capitals won't watch it?

Also why is it that the characters either die or they move to Queensland? And the one time they showed them in 'Queensland' there was wall to wall sugar cane, I lived in three different houses in Qld and not once was it in the midst of Sugar Cane! methinks this show is dumbed down for international audiences.

And talking about locations, the location used to film scenes of the characters outside the diner is a poor choice and only would confuse the viewer. These scenes are filmed around Fishermans Beach at Collaroy, 15km south of Palm Beach (where "Summer Bay" is located) and you can see the coastline including the sprawl that lines the beachfront including the highrises of Collaroy. From what I know, Summer Bay has no skyscrapers and suggests that the town is indeed a massive one. I think producers should film diner scenes within the Palm Beach area.

I think I can understand the use of the term "city" over "Sydney" given that it's not really that far from the city afterall. If you take notice of maps, the towns that feature on the program are located around Broken Bay and Pittwater, just 40-50km from town.

It also happened to Pippa midway through 1990 when Debra Lawerence took over the role. Same for Selena during the mid 90's when someone replaced her briefly due to illness

& Believe it or not, Irene was played out by a different actress when she first appeared on the scene a decade ago but it was very brief. Lynn McGregor has played the role ever since.

Anyway this doesn't bother me too. You just get used to the replacement over time and you don't take notice that someone else was once in that position. However it did disappoint me with Flynn that they didn't change the plot to make the changes less obvious. They could of shown a scene where Flynn could of told Sally that he went to the haridresser and got his hair trimmed etc...

Well Im not ashamed to say that I have been watching Home and Away for about the last 18 years, although I wouldnt say I watch it religiously and I have probably missed a year or two along the way. I wouldnt say I love it, but I like to keep track of what is happening, but by the sounds of it so do many of you that hate the show. I really dont think it is that bad and as for the actors, well half of them have gone through NIDA and putting to air 2.5 hours of new material every week is a hell of a job.

" In the City" is a common phrase that has been used for years by people all up and down the Central Coast of NSW when talking about Sydney.

Lets face it, whether we like the show or not, it is one of the most popular, longest running, highly syndicated Australian Shows there is. If you dont like it, watch something else, if you do, you will probably be able to keep watching it for another 20 years or so.

And please stop comparing it to the OC. I cant believe anyone could choose that overly american, mills and boon for teenagers, spellingisation of TV crap over Home and Away.

Congrulations to Hayley Smith (Bec Cartwright) on her engagement to Lleyton Hewitt. Anything related to the engagement can go here.

On his knees twice in one night

C'mon, marry me
The wedding of Charles and Diana is regarded as a benchmark in television ratings, if not a benchmark in marriages.

The wedding of the century attracted 4.5 million Australian viewers when it was broadcast in 1981. That benchmark was almost met on Sunday night, when 4.08 million Australians watched Lleyton Hewitt lose the Australian Open tennis final to the Russian Marat Safin.

Later, once the cameras stopped rolling, Melbourne Park was the setting for another match manufactured in ratings heaven.

Hewitt's agent and Channel Seven have confirmed that the 23-year-old proposed to his soap star girlfriend, Bec Cartwright, 21, after the four-set match. He presented her with a "big diamond" rumoured to be worth as much as $200,000.

It is a relationship Channel Seven has been keen to champion, as broadcaster of both the Australian Open and the soapie Home and Away, in which Cartwright stars as Hayley, an artistic young widow who has overcome a graffiti problem.

The network rearranged Cartwright's shooting schedule so she could fly to Melbourne for the tennis, ensuring a brilliant opportunity for cross-promotion. During the final, the camera crossed to Cartwright no fewer than 15 times, as she watched anxiously in the stands.

AdvertisementAnd Channel Seven was perhaps the first news organisation to release details of the pair's engagement, which comes less than four months after Hewitt ended his four-year relationship with his fiancee, Kim Clijsters. Cartwright ended her romance with her fellow soap star Beau Brady late last year.

Already, the PR machine is shaping their love story to avoid any sense that this is a rebound relationship, starting just six weeks ago after they were spotted together at a promotional party for Virgin Blue. According to Channel Seven, the pair "rekindled their relationship" late last year, having first met at a Starlight Foundation charity tennis day five years ago.

"The couple were instantly committed to each other and their close connection has been well documented in the media through their public acknowledgement and mutual support," a statement issued by the couple's agents said.

Hewitt apparently surprised Cartwright after Sunday's final by getting down on one knee to pop the question. She was back at work on the set of Home and Away at Palm Beach yesterday after avoiding the waiting media at Melbourne and Sydney airports. "Wow," she said when approached by media. "It's awesome. I'm really happy."

But she refused to be drawn on the engagement announcement. Her mother, Michele, who was on the set with her daughter, was a little more forthcoming. "I'm very excited," she told reporters.

It is believed Cartwright is negotiating with a magazine for an exclusive interview.

Seven's audience for the tennis final reached a high point of 4.87 million - more than last year's Athens Olympics opening ceremony. It easily beat the Australian Idol final.

It came nowhere near beating the 6 million audience for Princess Diana's funeral.

Perhaps only a televised Hewitt-Cartwright wedding will challenge that record.

Neighbours has always been popular in Melbourne but never as successful in Sydney. It's the reverse in Sydney where Home and Away dominates!!!!

It's all to do with city vs city rivalry.

Home and Away is a Sydney production and Neighbours is a Melbourne production.

Neighbours is a great soap and it has a reasons for being a good show. Same for Home and Away. They explore different facets of Australian life - The Australian Suburbs (Neighbours) and The Beach (Home and Away)

Its no longer very popular in the UK these days that was in the late 80s early 90s but if i was to choose one i would choose Home and away because it has a beach.

The show has often broken in to the weekly top ten most watched shows in Australia according to OzTam. The success of the show was seen at the Logie Awards of 2006 with the soap's actors winning many awards and Home and Away winning the award for outstanding Australian drama series.

The 2006 season finale aired 2006-12-01 and attracted a total audience of 1,220,000, making it the fifth most watched show in Australia on the day and the most watched soap on the day.

Due to low ratings at the start of 2007, neighbours attracted only 815,000, this will be discussed wether the show will be axed in the future. Grundy company will discuss about it soon.

Woah! Calm down you lot! During the 90s I couldn't decide which I prefered out of Neighbours and Home and Away - one week I would prefer one and the next week the other! On H&A, it's only since the Sutherlands and whoever else followed moved in that I stopped watching it, mainly when Rhys married whatever her name was and she had that AWFUL alcoholic daughter and boring son who liked horses! I just got bored of it and haven't really watched it since.

I often thought H&A had better quality storylines than Neighbours, especially when there was that murder storyline with Angie and her son Dylan a few years back. But I've been watching Neighbours almost continuously for almost 20yrs (since I was 6) and I don't seem to be able to stop watching it even though a lot of the cast are now younger than me!

Maybe if I had the time I would start watching H&A again because I did used to enjoy it back in the day!

Avatar

No, Yabby Creek is not the fictional city. The fictional city is Sydney and it gets referred to as 'the city'. Yabby creek is a town, bigger than Summer Bay. (like Mona Vale compared to Palm beach)

The area Home and Away and Yabby creek inhabit is called the Northern Districts (represented by the Upper North Shore and Northern Beaches ... where some of it is filmed). I do think once or twice I have heard the city mentioned as Sydney, but this is extremely rare.

It's pretty lame. The schoolkids in it look like they're really clearly actors and not real ones.

Channel 7 is the home of quality programming on Australian TV. In any one week, you can see gems such as Sunrise, Today Tonight, Home and Away and Border Patrol.

The rule of thumb with Channel 7 generally is that the later in the evening it is, the higher quality of show that is on - that would explain why shows such as Arrested Development and Parks and Recreation are / were shown no earlier than 10:30. They have too much better quality Amercian stuff to show earlier like According to Jim.

Emily Symmons (Marilyn) left the show in 1999, went to England and appeared on Eastenders.

Her character Marliyn came back recently and Channel 7 went big with her return. Marliyn also went to live in England was diagonised with Breast Cancer. She has returned to Summer Bay to die as the doctors told her she will be dead by then.

people give shows like this and neighbours shit but they are really well produced now as opposed to the early seasons and the acting is decent, storylines may be far fetched but the crappy 80's ones werent much better from what you see of repeats, which i reckon are more fascinating to watch just for how lame it all is and the fashion even accents, being more english or something.

have those who watch it noticed theyve got full on aerials over 'summer bay' now in between some scenes that look really cool. (palm beach / byron bay area?)

also play some decent music they had 'love lost - the temper trap' on the other night, nice to hear good stuff like that played 'in the bay'

An episode of Home And Away has been ruled too "raunchy and sexually charged" for its time slot by a TV watchdog in New Zealand.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority upheld a complaint about a passionate scene in the Australian soap opera, originally broadcast in March.

Liam Murphy (Axle Whitehead) was seen kissing and undressing Martha Mackenzie (Jodi Gordon) in the sequence.

Broadcaster TVWorks said the scene "did not contain any salacious content".

In New Zealand, Home and Away has a G-rating, which means programmes may be screened at any time.

The BSA said: "We have considered the nature of the scene complained about. In our view, the scene was raunchy and sexually charged.

"The removal of Martha's bathrobe, revealing her bra, and her straddling of Liam on the kitchen table as they continued to kiss passionately went well beyond the level of sexual activity that should be included in a G-rated programme."

It also said that the broadcaster "did not consider interests of child viewers" and "did not observe standards of good taste and decency".

But, because it was the first time a complaint about sexual content against the programme had been upheld, no penalty was imposed.

The episode was shown in the UK on Five shortly after it was broadcast in New Zealand, but media watchdog Ofcom said no complaints had been received.

Home and Away was by no means ever "good", but lately its really taken a turn for the worse.

We're subjected to it in Singapore on the Australia Network at 7.30 every night FFS. Surely there's something else they could put on, 7pm Project, Masterchef, anything but frickin Home & Away every night?

So this is what we're beaming about into about two Asian billion people, five nights a week: a bunch of yobbo surfer dudes and brainless blonde bimbos, a guy called Al and that annoying old woman that sounds like fingernails down a chalkboard every time she opens her mouth (which is more often than not). Along with a crap storyline involving a murder, a kidnapping or some other major disaster almost daily. If I were watching this garbage, I'd be avoiding Australia like the plague.

End of rant.
