The capital of Heilongjiang province is ready to make a second bid to host the Winter Olympics despite its first failed attempt in 2002, according to Zhang Xinsheng, chief-de-mission of the Chinese delegation to the 2005 Winter Universiade in Austria's Innsbruck.

"The successful bid for the Winter Universiade has laid foundation for further efforts to host a Winter Olympics," said Zhang, who was present when Harbin was awarded the Universiade at the FISU's executive committee meeting in Innsbruck two weeks ago.

China's capital Beijing is to hold the country's first Olympic Games in 2008. Harbin was the first Chinese city to bid for Winter Olympiad, but failed to be one of the four finalists for the 2010 edition.

The International Olympic Committee will open the 2014 Games bid process in May, by sending bid invitations to the National Olympic Committees. The deadline for submission of bids is July 2005.

South Korea's Pyeongchang, which narrowly lost to Vancouver in the vote for the 2010 Games, is the only confirmed candidate so far. Austria is expected to nominate Innsbruck or Salzburg, while Sweden plans a joint bid by Oestersund and Are. Sofia, Bulgaria, is another possible bidder.

Harbin's been trying for a while now but with Beijing in 2008, I think if any Asian city's going to get 2014 it will probably be Pyeongchang. Wouldn't hurt to try though and increase it's reputation.

I've been looking for information for Harbin, and I found some on Yabuli, the local ski resort.
here for the ski resort (http://www.yabuliski.com/english/xuechang/index.htm)
here for what forumers say of it (http://www.goski.com/resorts/rchn/yabuli.htm)
It's amazing to see how the jugement can vary from one person to another.
Are there any other ski resorts that feature
* more than 40000 beds that must include some luxurious hotels
* a olympic standard downhill (basically, it must boast a minimum vertical drop and length, and for the Altberville '92 games, to give an idea, it was more or less 1000m/1850m)
Even if it'll surely happen in the future, it seems there's much work left to host these olympics. :D

No chance of Harbin getting the 2014 winter olympic.

Oh, well since waterloo has said it, Harbin might as well give up...

It'd be nice if it could be held in Harbin, but with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, I think it'll be some time before China holds another Olympic event again (summer or winter)...

Unfortunately, I agree.

How much does it cost to make an Olympic bid? It can't be that expensive unless one builds extensive facilities, right?

The IOC still charges you a few million to even make the bid, and the farther you go the more money they charge. Not to mention all the planning and organizational costs of putting together a bid.

Edmonton, Harbin's sister city has hosted the summer Universaides, as well as a bunch of other international sports events. It's nice to see Harbin get into the game as well. :)
