BECAUSE OF THE SMALL SKYLINE

well for what its worth..to me more importantly is not what you see from afar and how big it is but below...on the streets, what the city has to offer, comfort, shades, ammenities etc. Lotsa cities might look grand from a bird's eye view but when you look down...not so much. There has to be a balance and KL has quite accomplished that, it's not perfect but more than adequate. I value quality more than quantity, just my take.

and not too bad for a city with SMALL skyline and prolly the smallest in population to be listed in the top 12 of world's best skyline..

while for me, it should be either KL has only Petronas towers or KL Tower. it shouldn't have both as from the photographic point, having 2 focus points won't create a 'stronger' image.

how about TM tower ? its not a focal point?

OshHisham
June 2nd, 2009, 05:57 AM
^^TM Tower is a good focal point in Bangsar area....(sorry i was talking about KL city core area)

as you can see from these photos how BOLD the tower is in the local milieu...

[QUOTE=tevnalan;38922050]8.5/10, still around Petronas Tower.
The Petronas are in the middle of the city..naturally everything is pretty much around it, most are new developments and the older ones somewhere in the vicinity, KL is pretty spread out to capture everything in one shot, yeah most pics feature the twins...well most tourists and photographers tend to gravitate towards the twin icons, is that a crime? :ohno:

Why many KL Skylines that always included The Petronas tower If you bring your skylines without that it is a quite a normal skyline for me 6.5/10

If KL doesn't include the Petronas Towers, it will still be better than Bangkok because there are still other icons such as the KL Tower and TM Tower.

Spread out the current Bangkok and what do u see? >> normal skyline that you just mentioned :)

I have no idea why people always say, "if KL doesnt have Petronas Towers, then..." C'mmon, Petronas is there and you can't remove it from the skyline. Do you vote based on what you see or based on what you imagine?

OF COURSE, YOUR OWN CITY WAS THE BEST AND THE BEST. :bash:

Sorry, that doesn't apply here.

However, your statement of "If KL is without Petronas Towers, then the skyline is..." is really bizarre.

Live with it, Petronas Towers is PART OF KL SKYLINE!!!! Don't remove it in your own fantasy. Whether you like it in KL skyline or not, they are there to stay.

THE PETRONAS IS always SUPERB! my fave building in South east Asia.
If I was rating the PETRONAS building alone, it will be a perfect 10..

but since we are rating the skyline.. it's only a 6 + 1(coz it's ASEAN :D ) = 7 for me.

I could easilly guess where ure from...for a COUNTRY of 26 million, the skyline is damn impressive. A tiny country compared to several other South East Asian Countries. The city population is lil less than 3 million compared to other cities in SEA, you can't compare the skyline with Singapore tho since the whole city is the republic! KL lack pollution, better living and overall charming..can't say the same with some cities of neighbouring countries.

Like most developing cities, more needs to be done in KL.

In the financial scene, since mid-2009 KL has roped in Goldman Sachs and Citigroup to operate their Brokerage here in addition to other big names already here such as JP Morgan, Macquarie, Credit Suisse and UBS. In addition, the govt has given a new Foreign Banking license for ICBC, China's largest bank to start Malaysian operations in 2010. KL is also the world's center for Islamic finance and capital markets.

Conclusion, expect more Office Towers to be built in KL, despite its recent political and religion issues.

Anyway good greetings from KL:

You should check your own grammar before trying to correct others! As an "educated" engineer who claims to be worldly, you've made an idiot out of yourself by associating your bad experiences with a city's skyline. Try not to be such a drama queen next time in your postings.

it only gets personal when one criticizes another person for having a difference in opinion; and not a city's skyline - everyone has their own preference. who cares what you think of KL or any city for that matter because you had some personal traumatic experience in that city. oh wow, not perfect? for a moment you sounded quite aloof and arrogant.

there is no such thing as safe or unsafe cities period! depends on where and when.,,all cities have good and bad areas, part n parcel of big cities. Not fair to say that other cities are safer than KL..please, I have been to KL numerous times and never felt unsafe, granted I try to do things at the right time, right place and with the right people, then u ain't gotta worry bout nothin, aren't u supposed to do that and not take a city for granted that it is safe that u dont have to watch your back? beijing of all places u said safer than KL? Have u gone to other parts of the world except for Beijing and KL...unless ure a world traveller then I'd take ur comments seriously.

hetfield85
January 18th, 2010, 08:20 PM
I've been around KL for many years now and I really want voice my concern on the crimes that are happening in the city. I have many friends that became victims of crime in KL especially knife point robbery. Of course I admit that certain parts of the city is relatively safe as I said before..the 'tourist' areas. I meant the modern part of the city for example..areas nearby KLCC..Bukit Bintang or suburbs like Mutiara Damansara.

There are some parts of KL that I think is quite dangerous not only at night but during midday too. As u can see..I've experienced it myself as I was walking alone at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman at night. I was chased by 2 persons and thank god I'm blessed with 2 long legs and I've managed to outrun them. Until now I still have no idea what's the motive behind it. There are numerous stories from my friends where they've been mugged even there are people watching..but sadly nothing can be done but to choose whether u want to get stabbed or u lose ur valuables.

I chose Beijing as comparison as for me Beijing is a huge city with huge population but surprisingly when I ventured around the city at one night and I don't have the feeling that I will be a victim of crime. The feeling is quite different from KL if I just walked along some areas namely Jln TAR, Chow Kit, Jln Raja Laut, Hang Tuah flats, Masjid Jamek area and some other places especially at night. I will not dare to walk at these areas at late night..unless I drive a car.

I will not make a comparison with singapore as u guys will say that singapore is small and nobody dare to commit crime as there's no place to run or hide.

Sorry to say that I'm just telling the truth and this is just my personal feeling..others may not agree with me but I'm okay with that. I know crime happens everywhere..I just hope KL will be more safer than now where I believe police presence and patrolling is the only viable way..but sadly I rarely see them on the streets.

Just my 2 cents :). Let's hope KL will be much safer in future.

LeeighIam

Hetfield, Im sure we all value your opinion but u sure made it sound like KL will eat you out the minute you walk out the door! sorry to hear that u had that unfortunate incidence but it's not common and rampant. I was not dissapointed by the score, he could give KL a 1 if he so chose to and I'd be okay with that, we're entitled to our opinions..u obviously havent seen his comments on other threads, a lot of his comments were offtrack and not very 'cool', constantly 'comparing' KL with other SEA cities and how how oohh and ahhh other cities were and KL no where in comparison. The other thing I highly doubt it was meant to be 5/5 , prolly more 5/10 ... again I couldnt care less coming from this particular individual. His/her comments were hardly ever 'neutral', encouraging, positive nor constructive comments. Everything is KL 'compared' to SEA cities. petronas already there and it will be always there...kl without petronas like paris without eifel tower....to judge the skyline just give the score no need to say if kl without petronas...because the tower will stand and dominant the skyline till forever unless an airplane crashed it or somebody try to bomb this building ( at that time maybe there will be statement like this...when kl has petronas tower the score is bla bla bla...but now without petronas tower the score is bla bla bla...)

Brother XNeo .. lets not name calling yea? I mean obviously he is Indonesian, pretty darn clear especially when he grouped all cities in south east asia and Jakarta stood out, instead of saying Indonesia...he refers to Jakarta, the city. We all are proud of our cities and each cities has its own plus and minus points and honestly I think all cities are great...look closely it's a different story, from street level n all. If you consider quality of life and affordability, that's a totally different ballgame. Some looks stunning from afar, most do actually...up close, nyeh.

KL's skyline is still growing rapidly and the buildings are built to meet the steady demands.

The buildings in KL are not meant to be tall skyscrapers rather built to an average height of the other buildings in the surroundings. Petronas will be the tallest now and more years to come.

^^ btw we Malaysian forumers "discovered" a very new tall project near KLCC recently.

i only agreed to someone else's opinion (someone from Goldcoast).. why only drag Manila down into the topic.. why don't you confront Goldcoast?? i don't even live in Manila LOL. It's not like, I'm the only one who thinks KL is over rated.. there are tens of others, from different cities.. why don't you confront their cities too? :D

BTW I myself never voted a perfect 10 for Manila.. coz that would mean it is in the ranks of Hongkong and New York, which is not, so i voted lower. Same case for Kuala Lumpur.. i'm just being fair with score comparisons. :D

What makes a city is more than how crowded and clustered it is...its what moves the city, multicultural with a bit of everything and space to breathe and beautiful parks...best of all, KL is not overly populated. Let's just respect whatever others think of your city or country. Every city is unique. It has good side and flaws as well. I'm from the Philippines and I personally think that KL skyline has one of the most skylines here in South East Asia. We shouldn't be afraid to show the ugly side of our city because its part of it.
In Philippine Forums here in SkyscraperCity, we share not only the beautiful side of our cities but also the not so good side whether its skyline, urban side, rural, provincial side.. :)

Wow, exciting debate. KL skyline has pros and cons. I agree that KL's best is yet to come. Wait for 2014. But certainly KL skyline cannot be compared to, say not even Shenzhen, but who cares anyway?

KL has all the top 3 tallest building in Southeast Asia and all the top 4 tallest structure in Southeast Asia. That itself is a record by ASEAN standards!!!

KL also have a record 25 sub-urban areas, all are fully developed with urban homes, a mixture of highrises and lowrises. Given its small population, the skyline of KL is already expanding to all corners towards Selangor state hinterland (example: Subang, Shah Alam, Puchong, Ampang, Ampang Jaya, Cheras, Seri Kembangan, Setapak, Wangsa Maju, Putrajaya, etc area).

KL has some great buildings, but all are spread over a large distance. There is technically no defined area of highrise buildings. This makes it hard to judge a KL skyline per say. From some angles it looks like 1 skyline, but up closer , you would be hard pressed to see any density.

I agree that KL has the Sao Paulo syndrome, lots of buildings, of very similar style, but there 1 difference is that KL has a few buildings the break up the monotony (Patronas, Menara KL and TM building).

IMO KL land surface are not flat (like bangkok, manila..etc).

that is why some buildings are not visible/hardly to see from the street level.

to see its density, need to look from the top / far view.

Bro, I've no idea where you got dat info.

PTT is constantly ranked as one of best commercial building in Southeast Asia by real estate consulting giants such as Knight Frank, CB Richard Ellis, Jones LaSalle and Cushman & Wakefield. Since 2004, PTT is occupied to the brink. Tower 1 is for Petronas (world's 80th largest company by revenue, source: Forbes 2009) and its 800+ subsidiaries whereas Tower 2 is for foreign multinationals. Some Petronas subsidiaries also take several floors in Tower 2 due to lack of space in Tower 1. Since 2008, LOT C (the upcoming tower next to PTT) has been constructed to house Petronas exploration companies.

For your general info, ICBC Bank of China (the world's largest bank) has opened its first Southeast Asian branch in the Petronas Twin Towers just one month ago. I think tenants like Haliburton is moving out to cheaper and newer office building in KL, confirmed is Goldis Tower. CICB is also moving out to cheaper rents in KL Sentral. See the rush hour yourself every morning!!

Demand for Grade A office space

By THEAN LEE CHENG

KLCC Property Holdings Bhd will be extending its retail space and having an additional tower office block of about 60-storey in line with the demand for office space around the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) area.

Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Andrew Brien says the Tower A of the Petronas Twin Tower is 100% full, while Tower B is over 90% full.

“Menara Maxis is 90% occupied. This shows there is a demand for Grade A office space around the precinct,” says Brien.

Piling has already started in what is currently known as Lot C, located between the Twin Towers and the Mandarin Oriental hotel. Brien says the new office tower block will add to further vitality and vibrancy to the area. The project will be completed in 2010.

Customers have become more time-challenged and indulgent, says Brien
“There are more than a dozen condominiums coming up around the area and this will provide a great balance between residential, retail and office space in the city centre,” says Brien.

His observation is not lost on developers. Glomac Bhd will be working on the RM550mil Glomac Tower. Work is scheduled to start early next year. The company will be keeping the 40-storey office block, to be located on a 1.3-acre freehold site at Jalan P Ramlee and Jalan Pinang, for rental income.

This will be the group’s first office building and second high-end development in the high-traffic city centre. The first is condominium Suria Stonor.

Glomac Tower will have a net floor area of more than 500,000 sq ft, four levels of elevated car park and four levels of basement car park. Net area per floor is above 17,000 sq ft. There will be two retail floors, 30 office floors and three sky restaurant floors, including a unique open-air rooftop restaurant.

The land was bought for RM1,000 per sq ft earlier in the year at what was then considered as a new record price.

Six levels of retail space, of about 140,000 sq ft, will support the additional block. This is about the equivalent of three floors of anchor tenant Isetan of Japan currently located at Suria KLCC. The new retail component will be a seamless integration to Suria KLCC at the Ramlee Mall end.

“It will be an extension in terms of brands, design and architecture. It’s too early to say who will be where as we have not sat down with our retailers yet. But it will open, fully leased,” he says, adding that the extra parking space will be linked to the current existing parking structure.

“The new block will be part and parcel of our growth. It will work beautifully hand-in-hand with our various current components. Each of these component works closely with one another. When a team of gynaecologists came for their meeting at the convention centre, we – the convention centre group and retail team - will sit together to see how we can offer a total package. We are able to make their stay very convenient because all the facilities are within five minutes of each other, be it shopping, leisure, dining, meetings,” says the Australian who was in retail property industry before joining Suria KLCC about five years ago.

Brien says customers have become more time-challenged and indulgent. Which is where branding comes in and KLCC has brought in 130 brands the last three years and over 300 specialists stores.

As the destination enters its 10th year, Suria KLCC has an increased of turnover from RM1.32bil three years ago to RM1.96bil to date.

“We want our retailers to have global exposure and there are trips abroad. Which is why we are always able to offer something new. We are at the forefront of introducing brands, Jimmy Choo shoes and bags and Italian manufacturer of men's luxury clothing and accessories Brioni.

“We do a lot of research as to what our customer wants,” says Brien, adding that Suria KLCC has a total of 45 million visitors last year, compared with 42 million a year ago. On a weekend, it has 150,000 visitors and a weekday, 100,000 with a local-foreign customer ratio of 80:20.

The average local spends about RM200, half of the international visitor. But 20% of its international shoppers account for 30% of their sales. Which means that 70% sales are from locals, which make up 80% of our visitors, he says.

“This means it is the local customers who are supporting our retailers' sales numbers, with contribution from the foreign shoppers,” he analyses.

In the light of this fact and the proliferation of malls around the city, Brien says it is all the more Suria KLCC needs to work harder to bring conveniences to its shoppers. It recently upgraded its concierge services and added a digital directory to make it more convenient for visitors.

what else u wanna say about PTT? Menara Carigali beside PTT is U/C right now to cope up the high demand or else they wouldn't build it. Maybe u refer to very outdated source . Even this source dated on 2007.
