Nice pics...but I think we need some more! Winnipeg is an attractive looking city.

I really enjoy that TD tower, it looks like a different building from varying angles....reminds me of Le 1250 Boulevard René-Lévesque in Montreal that way.

For some reason, Winnipeg actually looks like a lot bigger than a city of 600,000+. Looks more like a city of about 1,000,000. This picture does that trick, because of the amount of buildings and the density:

http://www.steinbachfire.com/flight/downtown2.jpg

Man, I really wish Winnipeg had kept its old NHL team, the beloved Winnipeg Jets. I'll bet you Winnipeg still has the fan base for an NHL team. Phoenix has nothing, man what a hockey paradise Phoenix is NOT. However, it's nice that downtown Winnipeg has the brand new 15,000 seat MTS Centre Arena, I love the cities with arenas downtown. Bring the NHL back to Winnipeg when the lockout ends.

in my road atlases i noticed that winnipeg has no expressways. is this true? if so, how is the situation there? how does a big city deal without expressways? does your highway 101 (i guess it's your loop of the city) work well? is it in an urban or settled area, or it is out in the countryside more?

also, what was it like when you lost the jets? are the moose a good substitute? are people still bitter? has there been any talk of trying to get an expansion team or getting someone to move there? phoenix doesn't deserve a team in my opinion. let cities that know about hockey and know what ice is have teams (i am a diehard flyers fan, and tampa is at the top of the "don't deserve a team" list. 20,000 people at their stanley cup parade. the flyers draw more people to a regular season game. what a bunch of pansies.)

No it's true that Winnipeg has no freeways running through it. Parts of the Perimeter highway are limited access (Highway 100/101) but for the most part no, you are correct that it isn't a full freeway.
There are expressways in the city but they are there are few interchanges on them for the most part. The north-east Perimiter is probably the busiest portion of that highway (and it is almost completely grade seperated in that area) Currently there are two new interchanges being constructed as part of an expansion of the highway though.
Bishop Grandin Boulevard in the city's south end is one expressway as well as Lagimodiere on the east side. A new expressway is planned for the north-west and is part of the five-year capital budget but I don't believe there are any interchanges planned for it yet.
Winnipeg radiates from a central core fairly evenly so that is one reason for the lack of freeways. Traffic is minimal compared to most cities though and this is probably because of the city's layout (nothing to do with planning and more to do with good luck I'd say) Nevertheless, there are stretches of non-stop roads throughout the city. The Disreali Freeway is one example. Basically it is an extended bridge elevated through an industrial area but is at most only two kilometers (roughly a mile) long. A lot of those in Winnipeg anyway.
As for the Jets...meh, most people are over it. With the lockout now there is a good chance that Winnipeg will get another team depending on how things go. Many people are pissed with the NHL here though and don't want them back. We want a league with the Stanley Cup back in town but would likely forego the NHL in it's current form. I would like to see top-notch hockey back in the Peg but not if it's the NHL. It all depends though. Quebec City residents might feel the same way. We view it as greed pure and simple that took our teams away. The Moose are alright and now that we have a new arena they're even better but of course they are not the cream of the crop. Still, it's a good way to spend a Friday night or whatever since it is professional hockey. It's just not the best there is. But we as taxpayers don't pay the player's salaries anymore either so I'm not so sure I miss the Jets that much. Then again, that's the NHL for you.

I was able to see some Winnipeg pictures in the Milwaukee vs. Winnipeg skyline thread from a while ago. Winnipeg strikes me as very well-kept. It seems to have a lot of architectural diversity, charming streetscapes, and plenty of greenspace, along with a nice riverfront setting.

Yup...unless the tree hugging granola munchers in the Wolseley area get their way. You should see actually, it's really kinda funny. I can't remember the lady's name but there's this one Wolseley resident that is convinced that spraying for mosquitoes is on par with dropping agent orange on the city. She is seriously disliked by the general population. Her antics border on appearing to be the sign of serious mental illness. It would be funny if it weren't for the fact that in this city at least, mosquitoes are quite plentiful and can ruin any day if you aren't smeared in repellant. She doesn't seem to notice the skeeters which would be fine with me except that she thinks it's her duty to block the city trucks from going out and spraying for the little buggers. She's a definite wingnut and I hope she meets her fate at the hands of the mosquitoes she so lovingly defends.

You know I was in the Peg a few years back in the middle of June, I hardly saw a fly. I was mostly downtown and didn't go north of Selkirk, south of Corydon, and west of Sherbrooke so maybe its worse in the burbs?
I can't beleive they can't get something perm to get them under control.
If someone doesn't want their yard sprayed do they have the right to not get it done?

Some years are worse than others. Time of day matters too of course. Skeeters don't come out during the day.

As for the spraying restrictions....that's kinda sticky right now. See, if you don't want your property sprayed then you tell the city. But there is something like a two hundred foot buffer zone around your property that can't be sprayed either. That's where these Wolseley nuts come in. They get a few of them together and canvas select properties in the area. Essentially what happens is that they get a small minority of people to say they don't want their property sprayed and because of the buffer zones they can keep an entire district from getting sprayed. Tyranny of the minority basically.

I will be visiting Winnipeg for 2-4 days late August with my mother and sister. I have never been to Manitoba and need some advice regarding attractions. I am definitely doing a side trip to Grand Beach, but what about Winnipeg?

I'd better start off by saying that we're interested in seeing things that one can't experience anywhere else. We've been to the Louvre and Tate Modern, so a museum tour isn't of interest unless it is as good, plain bizarre, quirky, off beat, or simply a must-see. The Mint?

Shopping? Doesn't have to be like the Ginza in Tokyo, but as long as it isn't some non-descript mall. Does Winnipeg have a famous department store to visit? Helsinki has Stockmann's, Seattle has Nordstrom's, Montreal has Simon, what about Winnipeg? Any unique Winnipeg shopping store? Boutiques? Markets?

I've heard about the Forks. What is it? What do people go there to do? What about riverboat tours? Boring? Relaxing? Winnipeg Bluebombers game? To me that's a uniquely Winnipeg experience. Is there good atmosphere at the Stadium? Tailgate parties? Are tickets hard to get? I also remember some famous burger joint. What is it called? Any other musts as far as food/restaurants?

Where are the good people watching streets, parks, cafes? Is Winnipeg walkable? Or is Winnipeg not human friendly? Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated. I'm very very excited. Winnipeg intigues me. Big and old enough to be interesting, isolated enough to be culturally unique.

People watching. Portage Avenue/Portage Place- you get all kinds, central park - many new immigrants from around the world. Department Stores-Eatons is gone (it was the neatest) but the Hudson's Bay Company is the only large one remaining downtown (soon to be downsized). Osborne St., Corydon Ave. Exchange (Albert St., McDermot and the like) Deli - the wagon wheel (best), one that leads underground on Lombard. Burgers VJs on Main at Broadway. There are other great burger joints splattered around the city (Red Top??) Ice Cream - Banana Boat - Osborne south of Pembina (aka confusion corner) and the Bridge Drive In on Jubilee Ave- great selection and a neat bridge to go for a walk. Forks Market A city park/outdoor concert facility/market-kind of an overview of some of the ethnic/continental restaurants and shops you may find around the city. The forks includes Nice riverwalk - goes right to Osborne/Corydon (Osborne Village/Little Italy) linking with the Forks and the Esplanade Riel, *the suspension ped. bridge to St. Boniface - more cafes and shops (still not as busy nowadays, but set to increase in popularity)

Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature is neat - Don't miss the Nonsuch Gallery - I repeat, don't miss it. At least I like it. A full sized replica of a 17th century ketch

Assiniboine Park and Zoo - neat little park with a stage for outdoor concerts every now and then

Gimli, nice little resort town, opposite side of lake Winnipeg from Grand Beach- busy on hot summer weekends (As is Winnipeg Beach - a short drive south)

Go to Lockport via River Road - (great scenery) and go to the Half Moon Restaurant just south of town on Henderson Hwy (East side of bridge) or Skinners on River Roads (West side at the foot of the bridge) OK burgers and dogs, but great atmosphere for burger joints

St. Vital Shopping Centre (south east side of the city)
Polo Park Mall 10 min. drive west of downtown
Canad Inns Stadium (5 minute walk north of Polo Park - home of the Bombers) Was just there. I saw Stegall get the TD record. Fricken loud. I bought the tickets yesterday. Only East side upper deck tickets were available. The 1st three games were all sold out. You should be able to get the tickets the day before. It does get harder to find tickets for 3 or more people as you get closer to game day. Since Milt got his TD record, sales may begin to diminish for upcoming games. Banjo Bowl, the weekend after Labour Day, perpetually sells out.

Hope I was of some assistance.

When are you in Winnipeg? there may be some great festivals occurring at the same time.

Shame about the department store closings. Wasn't Hudson's Bay originally a Winnipeg company? Is the downtown Bay store the original Hudson's Bay outlet?

Regarding burger joints, I think the famous one I heard about was called Salisbury or something like that. If I just asked someone on the street would they know what I meant and how to get there? I'll check out some of those other eateries also though.

Gimli. Is that the big Icelandic town? Is Gimli and Grand Beach too much for one day? My mum is from Finland, so it would be interesting for her to visit a Nordic community.

Which of those malls is higher end? Or is high street shopping better for that? My mum took a job in a small Northern Ontario community, so she is completely shopping deprived. Winnipeg will be a welcome opportunity to stock up, but she's used to West End shopping in London, UK, so perhaps a good mall would be a better idea.

I'm leaving for Thunder Bay on August 25th, staying in Ontario for an unspecified time, then off to Winnipeg for perhaps 4 days maximum. Don't have to be back in Thunder Bay for my return flight till September 14th. There is a Bomber game on Sunday, September 9th versus Saskatchewan. That is the only possible date that we could take in a game. I imagine that game would be hard to get 3 tickets for? My mum and sister have lived in Canada for 25 years, but never been to a CFL game. I think they need some Canadian culture. I'd rather the Bombers was there first experience, not the Argonauts. Toronto sports fans are lousy, Toronto FC excluded.

The information is very useful. Thank you for taking the time.

Salisbury House... I heard that it is going downhill. I always did like their cheese nips, but they are greasy. I haven't been there for a year or so. The restaurant on the Esplanade Riel is a Salisbury House. The Bombers game on Sept 9 should be sold out and crazy. It is the game following the Labour Day classic (which takes place in Regina). The game is now known as the "Banjo Bowl." You probably can get tickets to the Bombers game if you buy early. You could buy them online. I believe that you could buy them at any ticketmaster outlet in the country. I bought tickets for an Edmonton Eskimos game at Commonwealth Stadium right here in Winnipeg a few years ago. Try to take in a Goldeyes game if you can. Canwest Global park is a great stadium with a great atmosphere.

I don't believe the Downtown Bay is the original outlet, but we do have a Hudson Bay Company fort north of Winnipeg (on the outskirts of Selkirk) - Lower Fort Garry.

Gimli has an Icelandic flavour. In fact, much of the Interlake is Icelandic. I lived in Arborg for a while, and there are a lot of icelandic names.

Too bad you will miss Folklorama. Your mom would probably have liked the Scandinavian pavillion.

None of the malls are really high end. Your best bet is Polo Park (under renovation) St. Vital is a much nicer looking mall. The exchange district and Academy Road have some classier shopping or so I have heard. Also Corydon and Osborne do as well.

How much of Winnipeg looks like that first photo? It looks really good. I heard Winnipeg largely maintained it's old architecture with a few exceptions: original HBC store (very sad). From what I have seen on Winnipeg photo threads, most of office/residential towers constructed after 1940 are rather ugly/forgettable, by comparison.

there are some (slightly) amusing parallels between Winnipeg and Adelaide.

are few i could think of after reading the Wikipedia:

- you're building a new airport terminal, we just completed building one
- you're building a new Hydro building, we're building a new SA water building
- both cities dont have freeways and and procrastinated about it for decades, came close in the 60's, but ultimately shelved the idea
- both have a heavy reliance on buses for public transport
- both have a reputation for being conservative and not very cosmopolitan compared to other major cities in the country
- you're building a new city stadium, we're arguing about it, but the govt doesnt have the cash to do and is happy to rely on an outdated suburban 1970's venue. however the cricket stadium you see in the picture will have a second tier added to the long red brick stand starting some time this year.
- both have had stunted population growths compared to the other major cities over the last 30 years
- both cities are home to airforce bases
- i see you're also discussing being a hub for freight transport between Russia and North America, we completed a railway line to Darwin (on the north coast of the continent) a few years ago, thinking it would make Adelaide a centre for freight to and from Asia. So far its a bit of a white elephant as the majority of freight still travels by truck and ship. :)

but there are also many differences and its interesting to see how a city of similar size and resources uses those resources. i'm not sure which has the better economy. ours has struggled since the 60's but there is hope a mining boom will turn this around in the next 10 to 20 years.

your government's building is also much more impressive than ours. Ours was supposed to have a dome too, but for some reason it was never completed.

its quite a pretty place.

impressive at least from that angle, even though its a bit smaller in population. maybe there are many large surrounding towns? ...or maybe just more densly populated.

the architecture seems to be somewhat stuck in the 1970's, but we have that too.

those highrise housing projects look a bit ugly. we dont have those here, instead we build sprawling poorly serviced suburbs on cheap land miles from the city.

Most Canadian cities appear to have somewhat better infrastructure than their Australian counterparts. Maybe because most of them are around 100 years older. ...or it could be just the greenery that makes everything look better :)

that sounds so familiar. you could've been talking about Adelaide.

our collapse in the 90's was quite severe. we were labeled 'rust belt', the state bank also collapsed through poor lending practices which left the government with something like a $A10 billion debt. as a result subsequent state governments had to sell off a bunch of state assets which in turn cut down our revenue. so 18 years later we're still feeling the legacy of that.

that is fairly isolated then.

Winnipeg is the most geographically isolated city in the world. It's part of the reason that touring performers so often skip our town.

(geographic isolation = greatest distance to the nearest city with a population over 500,000 people)

Ah, on further googling, I believe you're correct. I was merely reciting a fact that an Economics major I know quoted, but perhaps I jumbled it. Winnipeg may in fact be the most isolated city in the Americas.

Edmonton and Calgary are up there too because the closest city of 500 000 people, apart from their sister city, is 13 hours drive away west or 17 hours to the east (it's 17 hours to Winnipeg, right?)

wow you could not be more wrong. With the new arena the MTS Centre, its the 3 or 4th busiest in Canada and ranked in the top 20 among concert events in the world.

WpG_GuY
April 10th, 2008, 09:17 AM
Winnipeg - True North Sports & Entertainment Limited and the MTS Centre are pleased to announce PollStar Magazine, one of the leading journals in the entertainment industry, has revealed the MTS Centre has climbed to 20th in their three-quarter-year Top 100 list of arena venue ticket sales in the entire world.

The MTS Centre remains ranked fourth in Canada, still ahead of such venues as GM Place in Vancouver (28th), Rexall Place in Edmonton (32nd), and the Corel Centre in Ottawa (41st).

The MTS Centre is now ranked 15th in North America, up from 17th ahead of arenas such as the United Center in Chicago, IL (33rd), American Airlines Center in Dallas (35th), the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO (42nd), and the Staples Center in Los Angeles (53rd).

“When the initial rankings were released in July, our promise was to work to continue to grow and bring top-rated events and concerts to the city of Winnipeg and make the second-half of 2005 even more successful than the first-half,†said Jim Ludlow, President & CEO of True North Sports & Entertainment Ltd. “Today’s news is proof of that promise. And with acts such as Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz, Gwen Stefani, and Andre Rieu still to come in 2005, we are confident we can improve upon our current position and climb even higher on PollStar’s list of the Top 100 busiest arena venues in the world.â€

Since PollStar’s release of mid-year Top 100 busiest arena venues in the world back in July, the MTS Centre has been host to such events as Pearl Jam (the largest event ever to be held at the MTS Centre with over 15,000 people in attendance), the Foo Fighters, Avril Lavigne, Backstreet Boys, and Audioslave.

To date, close to 950,000 fans, including hockey, have come to the MTS Centre since it opened in November, 2004. With four Manitoba Moose hockey games, an NBA exhibition game, and a Jann Arden concert still to come in October, True North Sports & Entertainment Ltd. anticipates hitting the 1,000,000th fan mark by the end of this month.

One thing about Winnipeg is its hard to get a solid pic of the downtown buildings without resorting to some sort of aerial picture.

Downtown Winnipeg is really spread out...wish there were less parking lot spaces and more parkades with high rise apartments.

wow these are some awesome pics.

Esp love the boat and stadium pics. I hope to have some pics up soon too, I was on the roof of Portage Place recently, and man does the city look different from that height. Its real peaceful, but gives you a good sense of the "disparity" and size of how spread out downtown is.

He was also telling me he overheard some people near a blue print room talking about new high rises being planned, but I wouldn't get too excited over second hand information like that. Although I almost did

Typical Convention Centre. There are few restourants hidden inside. Not much else going on unless there is an event happening. When it was completed in 1975, there were only a few similar facilities in Canada at the time. And in 1975, Winnipeg had the largest convention centre in Canada.

Business Centre, Winnipeg, Man.

Looking north on Fort Street past St. Mary Avenue toward Portage and Main, this frequently seen card was published by Valentine Edy Co., Ltd., Winnipeg, and was mailed on September 25, 1929, from "Uncle Joe" to "Master Bobbie Jacobs" of Chicago. Uncle Joe writes: "Mrs. Smith + I just arrived here. It is a large city but not as large as Chicago. The policemen here wear such funny hats it would make you laugh to see them. Uncle Joe."

This is a nicely hand coloured card by W. G. Macfarlane, Toronto. looking south down Albert and Arthur Streets. The card is probably from 1905 as the 5 storey Eaton's is discernable in the distance and at lower left you can see the lot where the Bulman Brothers fire had occurred in October 1904, including what appear to be scorch marks on the adjoining building. At the extreme lower left you can also see the empty spot where the Ashdown building had burned. Along the lower margin of the card is just discernable part of a photographer's mark that appears to be that of Steele & Co., suggesting the origin of the image.

The extent of the now forgotten 1916 flood is quite stunning, as shown here. In addition this is an excellent depiction of a matched pair of very new suburban houses. Would be interesting to know exactly where this was. House numbers are "135" and "141". I assume this is in Norwood.

you'll get to see much of downtown in a day for sure, but not properly ;)

I always like to think of downtown as 3 parts, from its central point at portage & main: North of Portage (West Exchange), South of Portage (Office district) and East of Main (East Exchange & The Forks)

Hope you enjoy the day, if you get enough time, head over to Osborne Village which is nearby the Legislative Building across the bridge

here's my photos of Winnipeg. Only had 1 full day there so only stayed in the downtown and walked to the forks area. Would have liked to have gone to the French neighbourhood but didn't have the time. Despite the attempts of the awful hotel in attempting to ruin my stay, Winnipeg was a great - fascinating old city

love those heritage buildings. There are not too many buildings like that left in most major cities in north america!

Some of those pics look like Detroit only not as desolate and depressed looking.

Nice to see Winnipeg still has so many of their heritage structures. I really would like to visit after seeing those photos.
