Two wonderful pictures ChicagoGeorge. The first especially showing how well balanced the skyline is from almost any angle.

There are 200 metre buildings lost in there!!! We all have our opinions but that aesthetically balanced, vast and unified skyline is a 10 for me. To be fair it is probably two to four 200Meter plus buildings short of the highrise density needed to call it unarguably the best single discrete skyline in North America but in every other respect it is IMO superior to Midtown which is its only serious rival as a discrete skyline on the continent. In an ideal world the old core Loop area would be heightened somewhat to go with the now utterly spectacular riverbank views. I think your pictures underline this point.

it just gets better and better all the time. it will always be a perfect ten no matter what happens now or in the future. once you reach the perfect ten benchmark the only place to go from there is.....well.... that would be 11 now wouldn't it.

I totally agree with you. Some of the pics on this page are staggeringly good even by Chicago standards. As you imply its all about personal view but for me Chicago is top of the pile.

Of course a 10.

Right now, I got Chicago as the 4th best skyline in the world (after HK, NYC and Shanghai). I wish I could rank it higher, but I'm a big sucker for massive skylines.

Positive characteristics:

- Style
- Architecture
- Balance
- Tall towers (6 supertalls)
- Surrounding (lake)


Negative characteristics:

- Lack of highrises outside the core
- "only" 27 skyscrapers over 200m
- Skyline looks "tiny" compared to HK, NYC or Shanghai (yes, I have to compare Chicago to those cities because they are the only ones which can compete. :D)
- no "massiveness- factor"
- some parts of the skyline look dated (but hey, so does NY)
- no (recent) development (not a single building over 200m currently U/C...)

With all the construction going on in NY, I don't see Chicago catching up, at least not this decade. I really wish this city would experience a major boom like Toronto for example, which btw is very well on its way to close the gap.

10/10, while its hard to say who has the best skyline in the world, there definitely are no better ones than Chicago, maybe some like NY, Hong Kong, Shanghai are tied but there are no better ones, Chi town is a beast. 8-)

omg you read my mind (everything I thought bolded in blue).:banana: Chicago has a nice skyline, but I hate how outside of the loop it just seems to go flat. Toronto in this regard wins. At least the skyline has expanded past the shore. Chicago needs a few taller buildings, and more building in-land away from the loop and lake shore. If it sees that then it will definitely jump into my Top 5. Till then.....a boy can dream.

Chicago's density is impressive though.

Beautiful! Kinda shocked to see that 8/10 lol. I like that Chicago's skyline, while dense, is also very linear that it forms a very long skyline from Lake Michigan. Makes it more massive and impressive from afar

10/10. Chicago's skyline looks good in in many angles, but the best is from the lakeside perspective. I have 5 skylines which will only get the highest score and Chicago is one of them.

I envy Chicago in the sense, that you have open spaces like this on the coast where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the stunning skyline whereas in NY, it's not so common and definitely not as nice

The Great Lakes are one of the best things about the US, there are very few lakes in the world where you can't see the other side as is the case with every great lake.

Chicago actually has some of the best 'inland' beaches in the world. They take them pretty seriously.

Its the geography of Chicago and how it's built outwards from the Lake Michigan coast that gives it such a picturesque view.

Chicago and Hong Kong are the two skylines I consider a 10/10. That line of skyscrapers along the gorgeous lake, the looming figures of Big John and the Sears contrasting with the sleek new Trump Tower, three peaks in the skyline, and the dramatically flat cityscape permitting some truly amazing panoramas.

What better way to reward the birthplace of the skyscraper?

I can't understand why so many people rate Hong Kong higher than Chicago. Chicago has way more memorable buildings, buildings that stand out in your mind after visiting. It doesn't have all the generic highrise apartments that Hong Kong has, which detract a little from the skyline quality, and it has lots of early 20th century style skyscrapers (gothic, art deco etc), a high-point for skyscrapers, of which Hong Kong has little or none. It has more variety of styles, and probably better balance between tall medium and low-rise. The only think Hong Kong has in its favor is the mountains and hills. Can anyone tell me the argument for thinking Hong Kong has a better skyline, because I can't see it.

Hong Kong is shinier and has more blue glass and flashy neon. It also has a mountainous backdrop.

Yes.. Hope they start building outwards to level off the disparity in height. Even Los Angeles has Century City as another skyline.

I think the problem is that Chicago is so flat, and really, the area around is so vast. You can build huge 5 story buildings in the suburbs and get away without have to build 15 story buildings instead. It seems like the only place with a real need for height is downtown , seemingly due to lake Michigan. We kind of see the same thing in Phoenix, no real need for tall buildings, so they just build shorter ones, and that's sufficient.

Best Skyline in the world! The architecture is incredible, and its possibly the most beautiful city at night, being around the river or millenium park at night is unbelievably amazing. Also, the thing I love about chicago and nyc is the way that their skyline is so big that you have to take multiple pics to get it all. Chicago's skyline is about 3.8 miles so thats pretty big! But that's part of its charm for me. We're not some ritzy city polished up for the tourists like Manhattan, or some shiny, soulless suburban mass like Phoenix, but a city that's taking some punches and getting right back up. As the native novelist Neelson Algren once wrote, "Chicago is like loving a woman with a broken nose. You may well find lovelier lovelies, but never a lovely so real."

Having Chicago is like having the 3rd most beautiful women in the world, not too shabby. You also mention rugged beauty, but many would say Chicago has the most aesthetically pleasing skyline in the world. To me, Chicago is kind of like the modern counterpart to NYC, it still has a lot of gorgeous historical buildings, but it looks more modern. Also viewing it from the lake at night when the city has that bright gold look is unbeatable. Also let me add that was a great post. Based off of that quote your saying Chicago has a lot of heart, and I definitely agree.

I would agree, almost everyone agrees it's in the top 3, and some professional lists have it as 2. There is nothing like seeing the 8 mile stretch of skyline from way out in Lake Michigan, absolutely astonishing and unbelievably impressive.

It is huge. It is the longest cluster of buildings in the world. It's 7.8 miles in length, and is as wide as midtown Manhattan at one point. It's not as big as Manhattan, but it makes up for it with aesthetic beauty, style, and height.
