The pictures are great, but there is so much I wish I could show you of the island that make it even better.... the different cities, views, beaches, scenary.....

The pictures I posted are not mine personaly, just ones I got off the web that I saved....

When I went, can you believe we forgot the digicam!!! I was so mad you have no idea.... but my girlfriend had one of her old cameras, the shots came out ok, but it just doesn't do it justice and quality like my camera would have.... :(

I'm a new member, I'm a Turk living in the Netherlands, I have a question about Kavala.
I was there (together with my family) back in 1990, I really liked it although I was just 14. Is Kavala a known city? Do tourists know Kavala? Do you have pictures:D

I've been there, what a lovely place, simply outstanding, purely volcanic islands. Also, the donkey ride down is amazing, I'd suggest that instead of the cable car.

Yes we were in Kavala in 1990 I guess, together with my family we drove by car from Holland to Turkey and stayed two nights in Kavala because it was so beautiful !!!

But Santorini is gorgeous! :) I love the contrast of the white, tropical, colorful city with the dry, dirty landscape. It reminds me somewhat of a browner version of Herzegovina. :D

Id say its among the best places to visit for summer in the world. Probarbly the best.

I totally agree- I have been to many places, but the Greek islands in Summer are my favorite. I usually go the third week af August and stay till mid September. Beautiful water and beaches, cloudless skies, relaxed and friendly people, great food, historical sites, developed tourist infrastructure and you don't worry about crime. What more can anybody ask of a vacation?

sure, u have to upload pics to a website like www.flickr.com. When u have them uploaded, u have to open each pic, click on the right, where it says "different sizes", there, just choose the size u want ur pic to have, and below the pic u'll see a box with a link inside (a long link). Last step is copy the link, come here, open a reply post and click on the image button (it's like 2 mountains and a sun). When the dialog box opens, paste the link u copied inside it, and accept. This must be done with every image. To see if u r doing it propperly, just click on "preview message" before posting it.

imo Santorini is one of the worst Greek Islands. There are many beautiful places and islands in Greece. For example Simi, Kefalonia...These are wonderful places, Santorini is not...

Kefalonia has the best beaches but theres nothing Unique about it like the Buildings in santorini. Actually, Zakynthos has superb beaches aswell.

But Santorini has that very beautiful element to it. Your wrong Kuvvacci.

SANTORINI is one of the best (if not THE best) Greek islands. It is a breathtaking, UNIQUE place, the ABSOLUTE, unrivalled jewel of the Aegean and BY FAR the MOST ICONIC greek island.

Thanks for the compliment- I am just learning photography but I make my living as a graphic designer. I'm anxious to post more photos from my time in Crete,Rhodes, Mykonos and Athens. My father was from Greece, but I am his youngest son by a second marriage, and although my siblings atttended Greek school, by the time it was my turn he was less forceful about it. The result is that I am now in my early thirties and desperately trying to learn more of the language, as well as make some Greek friends. Perhaps this forum can help me on my journey of discovery.

Please send more! I am infact 3rd generation Greek(Australian) and my parents were really strict on me going to greek school. I did go and I am probarbly the biggest Greek-Australian that I know lol. I only listen to Greek music and I only live the greek way of life (Well, as much as I can). In Australia, Cafes close at 9pm. Some Greek Cafes close later, but its very hard to live a Greek Lifestyle. Anyway, I hope you can learn more Greek, as its very useful to be fluent in more than one language.

I have been fluent in Spanish for many years, and travel in latin countries without speaking any English. It's really useful in New York to know Spanish, but the only practice I get with Greek is when I go to Astoria, or exchanging a few pleasantries with the proprietors of Greek owned diners. I have been to Greece 3 times, and each time I go, it takes days to loosen up my tongue and let some Greek flow- sometimes it is very embarrasing for me. Despite my current lack of vocabulary, at least I'm told my accent is pretty good "for an American".

Yea im lucky I have a good accent. Infact people dont know im not Greek Educated unless i tell them. I have a good accent. My sister however has an awful one! She is better at greek with writing and such, and probarbly has a broader vocabulary but she cant speak it right.

Kefalonia is the total package island imo. Oh, did I mention I am from Kefalonia :)

It is stunning and by far one of the must see places of Greece, But it lacks a trademark, one that Santorini seems to posses. Im talking about the architecture - The blue and white Buildings and Church.

When I return to Greece this summer, I think I will definitely have to go to Kefalonia. I've never been to the Ionians, because of the way you have to go back to the mainland to get westward ferries, it just sort of messed up my travel logistics in the past. I will certainly make the extra effort this time.

Indeed. When I visited that island I loved everything around it. It's an amazing place.

I loved the towns: Ia, Thira and ancient Akrotiri. Their beautiful view and atmosphere.

The best wine in the world: Athiri, Mavrathiro, Asyrtiko and Vinsanto. I personally like Roussos Wines.

Awesome food: Little Santorini Tomatoes, White Aubergines and Fava.

But still I personally think Crete is the most beautiful island on earth and then Santorini. ;)

Ανοίγει ξανά το Ακρωτήρι της Σαντορίνης

Η μεταλλική στέγη τοποθετήθηκε, η θηραϊκή γη την κάλυψε και η αγριάδα που έσπειραν στο χώμα φύτρωσε προαναγγέλλοντας μια πράσινη άνοιξη για το Ακρωτήρι. Το θέαμα από ψηλά είναι μοναδικό αφού τα 12 στρέμματα του στεγάστρου που ήρθε να καλύψει τον εντυπωσιακά διατηρημένο προϊστορικό οικισμό του Ακρωτηρίου της Σαντορίνης μοιάζουν να είναι συνέχεια του εδάφους της. Αυτός ήταν και ο στόχος.

Από τις 31 Μαΐου, καταληκτική ημερομηνία παράδοσης του έργου, μια νέα εποχή αρχίζει για τον αρχαιολογικό χώρο αλλά και για ολόκληρο το νησί. Δεν υπάρχει άλλωστε αντίστοιχο αρχαίας πόλης 3.500 ετών που να έχει δώσει τόσα ευρήματα, να είναι σε θέση να προσφέρει τέτοιον πλούτο πληροφοριών για τους ανθρώπους και τη ζωή τους σε εποχές μη καταγεγραμμένες στον ιστορικό χάρτη, ενώ ταυτόχρονα να συνδέεται με ένα συνταρακτικό γεγονός, μία από τις μεγαλύτερες εκρήξεις ηφαιστείου στον κόσμο.

Θα μπορούσε να το δει κανείς και σαν ένα υπερθέαμα που τα έχει όλα: ηφαίστεια, εκρήξεις, σεισμούς, καταποντισμούς, τσουνάμι που έφθασε ως την Κρήτη και ηφαιστειακό χειμώνα. Ενας από τους μεγαλύτερους μύθους της προϊστορίας είναι αυτός της Θήρας. Και ένας λαμπρός πολιτισμός γεμάτος ορμή και ζωντάνια που έσβησε πάνω στην ακμή του σαν πυροτέχνημα ήταν αυτός στο Ακρωτήρι. Σπουδαίος ο ρόλος του στεγάστρου, λοιπόν, αφού καλείται να προστατέψει και να αναδείξει τον πολιτισμό που θάφτηκε μέσα στην ηφαιστειακή σποδό αλλά και να αναστρέψει μέσω της νέας, ενισχυμένης στο έπακρο κατασκευής του την αρνητική εικόνα που δημιουργήθηκε διεθνώς πριν από μερικά χρόνια με την πτώση ενός τμήματός του.

Μια πόλη-μουσείο θα γνωρίζουν οι επισκέπτες του Ακρωτηρίου και μάλιστα σε περιβάλλον με συνθήκες «θερμοκρασιακής άνεσης», το οποίο δημιουργείται χάρη στον βιοκλιματικό σχεδιασμό του στεγάστρου από τον βραβευμένο γι΄ αυτήν ακριβώς την ιδέα αρχιτέκτονα κ. Νίκο Φιντικάκη. Η πυκνή δόμηση, τα πολυώροφα κτίρια με τις πλούσιες τοιχογραφίες αλλά και το ανεπτυγμένο αποχετευτικό σύστημα, οι αποθήκες και οι βιοτεχνικοί χώροι, οι δρόμοι και οι πλατείες και μαζί οι θεματικές εκθέσεις αρχαίων αντικειμένων τις οποίες οργανώνει σε επιλεγμένα σημεία του οικισμού ο καθηγητής Αρχαιολογίας κ. Χρίστος Ντούμας, «ψυχή» του Ακρωτηρίου από το 1975, συνθέτουν τα στοιχεία του αρχαιολογικού χώρου.

Πάνω απ΄ όλα όμως είναι η εμπειρία και η αίσθηση που μπορεί να αποκομίσει κανείς περπατώντας στους ίδιους δρόμους όπου πάτησαν πριν από χιλιετίες οι πλούσιοι καραβοκύρηδες του νησιού φεύγοντας για μακρινά ταξίδια και επιστρέφοντας με δώρα εξωτικά για το σπιτικό τους, οι κομψές κυράδες όταν έβγαιναν στην εξοχή για να μαζέψουν κρίνα αλλά και όταν, με τη γη να τρέμει κάτω από τα πόδια τους, όλοι μαζί έπαιρναν τον δρόμο της φυγής. Και να σκεφθεί κα νείς ότι πρόκειται για ένα τμήμα μόνο του οικισμού καθώς το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του βρίσκεται ακόμη μέσα στη θηραϊκή γη.

Το κέντρο
Περί το 1/10 είναι το τμήμα της πόλης που βρίσκεται κάτω από το στέγαστρο. Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, πρόκειται για το κέντρο της, όπως λέει ο κ. Ντούμας. «Γιατί τοιχογραφίες φαίνεται να υπάρχουν ακόμη και στα κτίρια που δεν έχουν ανασκαφεί. Δεν νομίζω λοιπόν ότι όλα τα σπίτια ήταν τόσο πλούσια και περιποιημένα». Σε 50-60 ανέρχονται τα κτίρια που έχουν εντοπισθεί σε αυτόν τον χώρο, ωστόσο ανασκαμμένα πλήρως είναι μόνο τέσσερα-πέντε. «Για πρώτη φορά όμως θα αναδειχθούν τώρα οι κορυφές άλλων 20ώστε ο επισκέπτης να έχει την κάτοψη του οικισμού» λέει ο καθηγητής.

Τρεις διαδρομές χαράσσονται μέσα στον οικισμό: για το ευρύ κοινό, για τα άτομα με αναπηρίες και για τους επιστήμονες. Δώδεκα θα είναι οι στάσεις επίσκεψης με ισάριθμες θεματικές εκθέσεις, οι οποίες αφορούν τη σχέση των κατοίκων του οικισμού με τη θάλασσα, τα σκαριά των πλοίων, το εμπόριο, τα εισηγμένα εξωτικά προϊόντα, την καθημερινότητα στην πόλη, τα μαγειρικά σκεύη, την τροφή και την οικοτεχνία μέσω της υφαντικής και της μεταλλουργίας. Μόνιμες και φορητές εστίες μαγειρικής, ψηστιέρες και υποδοχές για σουβλάκια, μαγκάλια, καλάθια και δίχτυα, κρόταλα, λίθινα και μεταλλικά εργαλεία και σκεύη, τεράστιοι αποθηκευτικοί πίθοι που στέκονται στη θέση τους, απρόσμενοι σπόροι φυτών όπως κέδρου και ροδιάς, παστά ψάρια και σαλιγκάρια, στοιχεία για την καλλιέργεια αμπέλου και για την πα ραγωγή... μπίρας: όλα τα ευρήματα θα είναι τοποθετημένα σε χαμηλές ξύλινες προθήκες για να είναι ορατά από πάνω. Οι περίφημες τοιχογραφίες εξάλλου θα παρουσιαστούν σε αναπαραστάσεις φυσικού μεγέθους.
Η περιπέτεια
Το 2000 ξεκίνησε η κατασκευή του στεγάστρου προκειμένου να αντικαταστήσει τη μικρή και απλή μεταλλική κατασκευή που είχε τοποθετηθεί στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του ΄70- επί Σπυρίδωνος Μαρινάτου, ο οποίος ανακάλυψε το Ακρωτήρι το 1967. Στις 23 Σεπτεμβρίου 2005 και ενώ το έργο είχε σχεδόν ολοκληρωθεί, η υποχώρηση της στέγης σε ένα σημείο της, με αποτέλεσμα τον θάνατο ενός ανθρώπου και τον τραυματισμό άλλων έξι, ανέστειλε τα πάντα. Η αναζήτηση των αιτίων όμως δεν κατέληξε πουθενά και επίσημο πόρισμα δεν υπήρξε.

Το βέβαιο πάντως είναι ότι, σύμφωνα με τη νέα βρετανική μελέτη, έγιναν αλλαγές στον στατικό κυρίως φορέα. Αλλαξαν εξ ολοκλήρου τα αντισεισμικά εφέδρανα που προστατεύουν το στέγαστρο από σεισμικές δονήσεις, καταπονήσεις και φορτία, αλλά και η μεταλλική αρθρωτή στέγη (χωροδικτύωμα) η οποία αντικαταστάθηκε από πιο συμπαγή κατασκευή, επίσης μεταλλική. Το κόστος πάντως για το Ελληνικό Δημόσιο παρέμεινε το ίδιο: 32 εκατ. ευρώ (16 εκατ. από το Β΄ και Γ΄ ΚΠΣ και 16 εκατ. από το ελληνικό κράτος).

ΣΤΕΓΑΣΤΡΟ ΓΙΑ ΜΗΔΑΜΙΝΗ ΚΑΤΑΝΑΛΩΣΗ ΕΝΕΡΓΕΙΑΣ
Δύο στέγες,μία ξύλινη και μία μεταλλική,οι οποίες απέχουν μεταξύ τους από ένα ως δύο μέτρα,παίζουν τον ουσιαστικό ρόλο στη λειτουργία του βιοκλιματικού στεγάστρου δημιουργώντας ένα περιβάλλον πέντε ως έξι βαθμών χαμηλότερο του εξωτερικού χώρου.Οπως εξηγεί ο κ. Φιντικάκης, «το στέγαστρο διαθέτει 14 τόξα,καθένα από τα οποία έχει ανοίγματα προς τον Βορρά και προς τον Νότο.Η διαμπερής κυκλοφορία του αέρα γίνεται τη νύχτα με το άνοιγμα όλων των “παραθύρων”, όταν η θερμοκρασία στο νησί είναι γύρω στους 18 βαθμούς (την ημέρα φθάνει τους 37).Την ημέρα ο ζεστός αέρας ανεβαίνει προς τα πάνω,περνά μέσα από τις περσίδες της ξύλινης οροφής και απάγεται από τα ανοίγματα του Νότου».

Χώμα πάχους 7 εκατοστών- αντί για 13,που είχε τοποθετηθεί αρχικώς,αφού ο νέος φέρων οργανισμός είναι βαρύτερος από τον προηγούμενο- καλύπτει την οροφή αποτρέποντας τις αχτίδες του ηλίου να ζεστάνουν τον χώρο.Το αποτέλεσμα; «Εχω μηδενική κατανάλωση ενέργειας σε αυτό το έργο» τονίζει ο κ.Φιντικάκης.

Εσωτερικά το στέγαστρο βρίσκεται σε ύψος τεσσάρων ως έξι μέτρων από τις αρχαιότητες,ενώ υπάρχουν 11 έξοδοι διαφυγής.Στον περιβάλλοντα χώρο ένας διάδρομος οδηγεί στην είσοδο.

Υπάρχουν εκεί τρία φυλάκια,ένα κυλικείο,ιατρείο,χώρος ξεναγών,τουαλέτες, αποθήκες,χώροι συντήρησης,υδατοδεξαμενές για τη συγκέντρωση του νερού της βροχής που θα προέρχεται από την οροφή του στεγάστρου,ενώ έχει προβλεφθεί και βιολογικός καθαρισμός.

Great island but i think that there are more beautiful and more unspoilt islands in Greece like Samos and Skopelos Islands :)

^^ I wouldn't call Santorini "spoiled".

Unlike many other areas of Greece, Santorini has very strictly maintained its traditional architectural character despite the onslaught of mass tourism. It may not look exactly as it did 50 years ago, but at least newly constructed buildings are designed to be perfectly harmonious with older buildings.

Santorini has also avoided the 1960s/70s concrete-box buildings that have popped up in many other parts of the country. Santorini is actually a good example of historical preservation in the modern age, and how traditional architecture can still be implemented in new buildings. Other areas of the country, like Crete, Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Rhodes, Kastoria, Patra, Zakynthos, etc, can learn a lot from Santorini.

Those restaurants could be little be expensive there but i dont know so much about Fira, but in Oia are expensive for sure.

There are many resorts on Santorini, italiano. Before go there, you need to check / find them first. When i have been in Santorini i had stayed in Perissa.

Yes it is a really beautiful island.
I spent there one week in 2009.
Please do not visit the so called nice restaurants and cafes with the fantastic view... instead you want to pay for a bad meal 50 to 60 euros.....
Pay a visit to the small restaurants in the second and third row in the town of Fira. The less touristy they are the better they are....
You can find true Greek treasures in Fira town...
I spent a week at a wonderful apartment direct at the caldera.... and i paid only 80 euros per day ( in July 09)!!!!
Therefore you have to search and try to avoid too touristy places.

Keep in mind though that visiting Santorini during the winter period will definitely not have the effect of "a summer island" that you will get during the summer months. On the other hand though, it will be less crowded so you might enjoy its quiet side. Are you visiting other places of Greece as well, or just Santorini?

Hi!! Thank you for your message... Yes i definitely love quiet... I will be spending a couple of days in Athens as well... But most of my stay in Greece will be spent in Santorini... I am sure it would be gorgeous in summer but it looks like that so do a couple million of others do think so too... It will be my first time in Greece; second time in Europe... :)
