Hmmm ... I´m one of those people who doesn´t only look at the down town of a city but also at the rest, at the residential buidlings, at the suburb, which actually consist in Singapore almost only of slums .....

So the down town gets 10 from me and the whole city at all maybe 5.

heirloom
December 22nd, 2002, 05:59 PM
erm... actually there aren't any slums in singapore... i live in a 1600sq ft apartment at the furthest end of singapore on the 4th storey and it cost about USD290,000 in a property slump = bargain price.. this apartment is in a major residential area... at this price it can't be a villa but neither would i call it a slum...

in the second pic with the blue building and green buildings under construction... those apartments there go to the millions.. and even higher the nearer they get to the city centre...

i know many of the buildings look like shit on the outside but they are rather valuable and some can be done up really nicely... juz think of hongkong with bigger apartments at slightly lower prices ...

hope this corrects ur image of singapore wif slums :angel1:

Hi Warszawiak...

I was totally puzzled by your comments. Why do u say that there are slums in S'pore?:bleep: Have u even visited this beautiful garden city? Here is S'pore, we have ABSOLUTELY NO SLUMS!!! I can confidently say that S'pore is the ONLY COUNTRY IN ASIA, and perhaps the world that had acheive this. We may not have the most spectacular skyline(2nd to hk), but as a whole country, nothing compares to s'pore.

We have the world's best goverment housing scheme, that had been awarded the United Nations Human Habitat Award more than a decade ago. It only gets more and more beautiful outside the downtown area. Every single inch of the country is well-maintained, and every single apartment block is repainted or upgraded every 5 years or so. All the streets are lines with trees and bushes and there is at least a playground or park for every 5 min walk! The governmnet spends billions every year just to upkeep the neat and tidy image.

We have developed to a stage where we are not talking about clearing slums anymore. All the slums had been developed into beautiful housing estates more than 15 years ago. We are now into bringing the standard of living to a height never seen before.

Trust me, thats what S'pore is! Why do u think thousands of people are queing up to migrate here from all over the world? If u say the town area deserves 10, then the whole country deserves 100!:D U think the world calls S'pore a "clean and tidy city" and a "garden city" for nothing?

I am so sorry if i had over reacted, but its just too disturbing to hear people say that there are slums here. This is the first time i had heard somebody say this. Come visit S'pore and look at the beautiful houses we all stay in, the countless parks we lay in and the gleaming offices we work in! Hey guys, I think its time to post pics from outside the town area!

I'm sorry , but I'm alittle disturbed by the thought of Singapore having slums, it's like saying the Vatican has beggars.

In fact, I'm more proud of Singapore's 'suburbs' than the city, do you know that the city is "dirtier" and "uglyer" than the suburbs?

It is a known fact that Singapore is the only city in the world apart from Rio De Janerio, that has a rainforest within city limits, so any extra land is filled with primary rainforest.

No slums at all, the 'poor' people live in these:
http://www.fbe.unsw.edu.au/research/student/SgPubHous/Normal/coners.jpg
This is considered as a poor standared of living which the younger generation can't tolerate:
http://www.fbe.unsw.edu.au/research/student/SgPubHous/Normal/kitchen.jpg
I'm sorry if I'm a little harsh here, but this statement must be made very clearley to anyone who thinks that Singapore has slums.
This is about 1/4 of Singapore:
http://archive.spaceimaging.com/ikonos/2/kpms/2002/05/browse.140975.crss_sat.0.0.jpg
Housing estates:
http://www.fbe.unsw.edu.au/research/student/SgPubHous/Normal/site1.jpg
http://www.fbe.unsw.edu.au/research/student/SgPubHous/Normal/site2.jpg
The short houses are not slums, but expensive landed property and shophouses the highrises are cheaper.

That is the Maybank Tower, waterloo. ;) It is 175m (575ft) tall, at 32 storeys high, and finished last year in early 2002. It was designed by a Singaporean architect, who happens to be my friend's uncle! :D

Another interesting thing about it is last year October, performers from the Australian group "legs" waltzed down the building and did a ballet on its surface as part of a huge extravagenza on the entire bay for the Esplanade's (those durian-shaped buildings...the art's centre) opening. ;)

I have not extensively studied singapore but from these pics..I like what I see. It has great density (couldn't be better) and good height...I'm not totally sure I admire the building styles that much (for that I'd have to see them in person)...the urban core has a lot of good interaction with the surrounding waters and landscape....which, like it or not, is a crucial aspect of an exciting skyline. in the case of singapore...the gleaming towers rise from the waters that seem to surround the scrapers, giving the cityscape a clean, almost pure look

Singapore is beautiful and Unique, though it should not be ahead of Chicago. I potentially might have put a 3 or less, though only because so many people did the same to NY, so it was in retaliation, and I also want to move Chicago ahead of Singapore.

I'll give Singapore 9/10.

Regarding slums, I guess these aren't:

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1875.jpg

... very impressive architecture, I dubbed it "The Great Wall of Singapore". I don't think I'd like to live in it though (Bukit Panjang Ring Road).

Below: a view from up-river. I did find some guys sleeping under one of the bridges, but i guess they had somewhere to go home to:

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1893.jpg

My best shot of Boat Quay, out front of the UOB Plaza. True, you can't see the high-rises- very impressive- but the little buildings look good too.

Some great shots further back this thread, by the way.

I had a great time photographing Singapore a couple of years ago. According to my partner, my shot from the Bukit Panjang LRT has already been exhibited to your "First Lady".

The 30 year old "slums" look very familiar, babystan03: but given, I think, 4000+ high-rises in Singapore? I'll leave that to the locals.

Another "slum" shot up the river: destitute people grovelling in houseboats:

Excellent pics of the MRT Circle line , heirloom ...

There aren't really any slums here. He's just joking.

Yardmaster, those aren't slums. They were former warehouses, now preserved and turned into nightlife spots.

Joking? Well look at this ...

Scores of beggars in the atrium of the Funan IT Centre ...

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1799.jpg

Boat people escaping the upper reaches of the Singapore River ...

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1888.jpg

In the western suburbs, there are lots of "slums": illuminated by primitive wind-generation equipment.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1941.jpg

The centre of the island: just thatched huts: and the people worship pagan idols.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1856.jpg

And in Singapore, even the footbridges are riddled with weed.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/sing1898.jpg

I did actually find a few buildings which were sort of slummy (while trying to find a quick route up Bukit Timah from the north-west). But which of us hasn't slummed it at times?

Yardmaster
June 16th, 2004, 01:14 PM
do you have pics of the actually slummy building? bukit timah is um supposedly a high wealth residential area...

There were some very impressive tower blocks along the Upper Bukit Timah Road ... which I photographed.

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v294/ooompaloompa123/Singapore/buktim01.jpg

I think these actually look a lot better than the ones at Bukit Panjang. Behind the Rail Mall, however, were some pretty ordinary looking single and double storey residences, which I didn't bother to photograph, because they didn't interest me. The residents seemed to think it was a bit strange for a long-hsired Caucasian guy to be wandering around their back-streets with a camera and they didn't invite me in. Who knows; maybe those houses were actually lovely inside.

Wow, this thread is huge, and it so well should be. BTW, somebody pay for that guy to go to Singapore so he gets it strait in his face that theres no slums in Singapore.

If I was rating his way, I would rate NYC Downtown a 9.8 and the total city a 3. Its full of slums. Thats why he shouldn't even rate like that.

For those who had always been wondering, those short rowhouses are actually called 'shophouses' here.

In Singapore there are many conservation areas. One of the biggest being Chinatown Heritage District, which is made up of 4 Conservation Areas.

So don't expect any new buildings to come up within the Conservation Areas.

After days of consideration, i have a set of further comments before i vote.

Singapore with buildings pack at the fronts and flat land behind is one truly weakness. The depth is not deep enough and up to standard, and the length is short as well.
The design good but this will just look like a row of buildings along the coast.
I lived in singapre before and i found out that the people most of them are not kind. As what people said 'kiasu' means scare to lose. But truly, who bother to challenge with singapore, so singapore is just making story all its own that people want to challenge them. Not all of them, but majority of them. This is one of the negative side of singapore. The good side is that singapore is a good place for food. She is one of the best asian country where you can enjoy good food.
Lastly, its all about skycraper, so i can vote for scraper for 7.

Flat land behind with buildings packed at the front? :?
Where got?

The vast land at Marina Bay is for recreational uses and for our new Downtown.
The depth of the Financial District skyline is about 1.5 km.

The straight parallel rows are due to the fact that in the past, the area were all row buildings. In the past, the backlanes were the back doors of the buidlings, but they stil remain now.

Definitely a 10

I have been to Singapore and I think that it has the perfect combination of nature and urban development. The blend of different architectural styles is also overwhelming, and I especially like the shop houses, because almost all of the shop houses in Hong Kong have been pulled down. I also like the skyline, and there is a sleek and modern quality about it that Hong Kong lacks. Perhaps Hong Kong's skyline is more colourful and varied, but Singapore's looks more sleek and orderly.

The only reservation I have is that Singapore has a slightly sterile and artificial feel, even the shophouses seem too new and clean to be real.

But aside from that, Singapore is one of my favourite cities (in Asia at least). I actually like it better that Hong Kong (where I live). Great food as well.

Singapore is a really beautiful city, with some really nice photos in this forum. I like the fact that its skyscrapers aren't boring, and yet whenever I see new photos, I begin to realise that it has a new layer of skyscrapers every time which I had not seen previously. Its a very organised, and clean city; its dense enough and it has some pretty nice buildings. It even possesses a very international yet Asian-feel to it, and with this, Singapore is worthy of its position.

Singapore has just got something about it - there are bigger and taller skylines out there, but this one just ooozes class.

This picture is what makes me have to give it 10/10:

Now look at me in the eye and tell me thats not impressive.

Wow, Singapore is like my room, clean and spacious. UGH!! So beautiful. Judging from their strict policy with literring and slum areas around the city, wow. With a strict rule like that, I think I should become like that too. The skyscrapers are also beautiful in the way of how it blends in through everything, the day, night, the other skyscrapers, the bright blue sky, whatever you think. So romantic, right? Um....ok.
Basically, Singapore is a well known city + country with something in mind that it is a funny area. With Singapore being the size of the city itself, I have no idea why?
Back to skyscrapers....again, during nighttime, the city shines like a crystal on a table showing off it's behind to people, or showing off my behind to girls. I just can't get my mind off of how Singapore is so tasteful.
My ratings has to be on what I feel about the city, and she says "DAMN!!!" 10/10!!

I Love Singapore - been there twice this year already and i'm going there again for new year (Calender new year)

Heres a couple of my pics - all taken with a Casio Exilim Z55, Hence the slightly blurry night shots

The First two i took from Bar New Asia - 70 floors up and my ears popped in the express lift. This was from my first visit in May

Took about 5 attempts to get the camera that still, was a windy night and the camera is only a pocket thing really

S'pore CBD is one of my favourite in Asia along with HK and Tokyo. It's not polluted, organized...give ppl peace of mind and relaxation. The other asia cities' CBD come close are Shanghai and Sydney...others not really attractive

Despite the height restrictions, Singapore is one of the best skylines in Asia!

9.5/10 for Singapore :D

By the way, If SG didn't have the height restrictions, can the city come up with a skyline that can match HK?

I voted an 8.

I know I could've voted for something higher but the skyline is not something that I like about Singapore. Well, it's above okay and even somewhere between "good" and "very good". I'll rate it 11/10 when structures such as the Sail@Marina, Pinnacle, 1 Quay, etc. are completed

But IMHO the things that make me like Singapore are not the strucutres but rather on the following namely:

1) Singapore Mass Transit Railway System - first country I saw that has "screen doors" so that you cannot accidentally fall off or commit suicide by jumping on the railway tracks

Singapore train system reminds the world that all modern train systems MUST HAVE THESE SCREEN DOORS!!! :)

2) Changi Airport Terminal 2 - has insides/interior of those buildings that you see on Star Trek)

3) http://www.directv.com.ve/directvven/FTP/Programacion/Variedades/animax%20(1).gif

The home of Animax, my all-time favorite anime channel. Animax-Asia's headquarters is located in Tampines Junction, Singapore and is managed by Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) Networks Asia.

Because the 'classic' view is only a mere few streets wide.

Most of the other skyscrapers are in fact in the suburbs.

Most city skyscrapers are in Orchard area. ;)

Orchard area not attractive enough. The only place i like is Raffles city, S'pore financial centre. S'pore is clean and organized, but quite boring

10/10 for me. The skyline has been planned very well and the setting makes it even more aesthetically pleasing, making for one of the best skylines in the world.
