Welcme to Ashdod City, the 5th biggest Israeli city with some 225.000 inhabitants:
The modern-day city of Ashdod was founded in 1955. Located 27 kilometers to the south of Tel Aviv - Yaffo, the city's name was already mentioned several times in the Bible, in the book of Yehoshua (Joshua). Ashdod Seaport was inaugurated in 1965 and is one of Israel's two major seaports on the Mediterranean coastline. (the other is Haifa Seaport) Ashdod's industrial zone is one of the largest in the country.
During the 1990's, Ashdod's population doubled itself and the city has also developed into a tourism hotspot with some of the best untouched beaches in Israel, side by side with the development of a large marina with a 550-vessel capacity. More and more new high-rise neighbourhoods are being planned and built, as the city's population is expected to reach a quarter million residents in 2020.

Ashdod is also significant for its rich history. Archaeological excavations have revealed a continuous human-settlement in the city's area as from the 17th century b.c.e., with several findings of Canaanite and Israelite fortifications. In the late Canaanite period, Ashdod served as an important harbor city as is shown by archaeological finds and references to its maritime trade in the archives of Ugarit. According to biblical tradition, it was a town of the ancient Anakim ("giants"). In 734 b.c.e. the city surrendered to Assyria and Ashdod became the capital of an Assyrian province. Although the city was situated on the via maris, the trade route near the sea, it was not directly on the coast but possessed an ancient port which was called Ashdod Yam ("Ashdod on the sea") Ashdod's importance declined and for 1000 years it was no more than a small fishing village. Nowdays the city has regained its importance and vitality.

Ashdod is probably one of the most underrated cities in Israel b/c most people probably don't much about it.

because it's in the south.....

Beer sheva is in the south and its not underrated, Ashdod is only 30KM away from Tel Aviv and yet it is very underrated but i prefer it like that, more quiet this way....

Nah its not that... Its just that for some reason many Israelis still see Ashdod as a small city which hasnt developed whereas it has nearly 220.000 citizens and is one of the biggest industrial cities of Israel with many important factories in it...

and the biggest procent of emmigrants from Russia heheh:)

Ashdod is still a young city nevertheless, b/c it's only about 50 years old, 49 to be exact. However, the construction boom does indicate that it is growing. BTW, Ashdod is Israel's second major port after Haifa.

what green organizations says about this project?

There was a big war over this project few years ago, the green organizations obviously objected it, they might have won little battles but in general the project is already well underway and almost done, one of the more beautiful projects Israel has seen in the last few years.

The green didnt reject it, they rejected the fact it wasnt for marine or recreational purposes but for luxury housing again!

Ive passed near the concert hall yesterday and its stunning... another impressive landmark to this city!

At the price of sounding negative I can say that concert hall is another
very weird "creation" by Haim Dotan but at the state of how bland our architecture
has become because everything must first be cheap - than I think this is a good
project for ashdod in any case

I dont agree, it blends very well with its environment....

wow the marina looks great, this city is growing so fast its really amazing.. and all in the last 10 years!!

The marina is a great idea there, they should build even higher because they are running out of space!

but at least for the marina,they could have built more esthectic towers.

I agree but its up to the contractors and when you have buyers thats what matters to them.. if people would say "its not beautiful or unique enough" they would start to do more in that.. but people only look at what the apartments are inside and how much they cost and if their prices will go up or not

Zohar- this isnt true the prices of apartments in the marina area are skyrocketing... in the buildings you see in the pics which are 10 meters from the water they charge 550.000$ for a penthouse and 350.000$ for a 3 rooms apartment

I know a friend who bought his flat for $170,000 (near the marina, in the "city")
and it was in 1997-8 I think, now 7 years later its worth $250,000!!
thats a nice profit. the prices are really going up fast.

Yeah the prices in Ashdod are soaring constantly, it is the next Herzelyia... with a very short driving time between Ashdod and Tel Aviv (approx 35 minutes) and a high living standards its becoming more and more relevant for young people from the "center". In Ashdod nowadays you can find everything you can find in TLV, the city is quite isolated which can be an advantage...

OUR institute is in East Netanya so many young couples buy their apartments in east Netanya
this place is really cheap with all comforts(but it's a bit far from the center of netanya)

I think Ashdod IS the center, it will be a center because of Yavne and Ashkelon and small places around like Tel Aviv became the center Ashdod has the potential to be another one for sure.

Ashdod actually provides thousands of jobs to many people all over the area including TLV.... with our huge industrial zones, Port, Power plant, refinery, Marina and many more facilities in Ashdod... so about jobs its not true.

Concerning night life its true, the scene is rather poor right now but thats also developing, but then again with such short driving distance from TLV there is no need...ive got to TLV in 25 last evening... its a ridiculous amount of time

no just 100 all the way........it also happens to me often on the 6AM bus from Tel Aviv to Ashdod on friday mornings... i leave the TLV central station at6AM and im already in my bed by 6:30AM (the bus stops near my house)

yeah ashdod is growing so fast it will very soon be a real rival to Tel Aviv.. and it has all the location and infrastructure to do it..

Perhaps by size.... the atmoshpere would never be the same. But Ashdod is seriously becoming one of Israels more impressive metrpolines. the cities population is expected to cross the 250k mark this year and the future is bright...

It's pointless to compare ashdod to Tel Aviv. Tel-Aviv is the heart of a giant metropolitan area in relation to Ashdod, which is a town near a giant metropolitan area (Tel Aviv). by 2030, most chances are that Both Ashdod, and Netania will become completely integrated into the metropolis.

A-because of culture & traditions

B-because of building materials and technics available from the local land (clay/stone/rock)

C-lack of sunshine in N.Europe = much more coulor on buildings and more details to make shadowed patterns on the facades. (because of mental -feelings reasons not only due to termo ones).

Ashdod is beautiful city, really. but and it's a very big but the crime level is very high. one of the highest in Israel.

yes yes im sure. the problem with this city that in the northern parts of the city quaters A-D are very low social-economical grade. immigrants from russia and ethiopia and maroccan arsim.

a police man who work in Ashdod told me that the crime level is very very high and one of the highest in Israel. of course not cloe to Tira and the triangel, Lod and Yaffo.

I've been there and nothing so special there

isn't Ashdod the fastest growing city in Israel. It sounds like its going through the same growing pains as many other big cities.

Yeah they are building there 3 projects right now. one with 2 20 floors buildings, the other with a 33 floor building and a 25 one and im not sure about the third project, but its definitely going to be a very high area.

it's actually old Ashdod qtrs. Bet is on the left and Gimmel is on the right
the green area is Ben Guryon Park

You can say Ashdod is a green city. though many parts of it are horribly treated.

נראה לי שהתכוונת מה התחבורה הציבורית שיש ולא אם יש
ולדעתי באשדוד יכלו לעשות רכבת פנימית פרוורית בינה לבין רחובות ואשקלון זה היה יכול להיות מאד שימושי וגם
רכבת תחתית הייתה יכולה להיות רעיון טוב, זה פחות בעיה באשדוד לחפור כי הקרקע רכה יותר
