Sydney, Australias largest city (over 4 million), and seen by most of the world as the 'gateway' to Australia.

Has anyone got that dirty great big aerial pic of the SYD CBD, that was floating around the forums a month or 2 ago ?

Anyway I give it 8 /10. Once all of the buildings currently under construction are finished I raise it to 8.5 / 10 !

Sydney certainly is one of the VERY BEST skylines in the world.
I give it a 10/10. I have visited Sydney twice and I am
completely in love with that city. The skyline is dense, has
enough height IMO, surrounded by natural beauty.
That is one thick forest of high rises. It lives up to the biggest
skylines around.

Ever since I saw MI:2 I have been intrigued by Sydney's skyline. They had some great fly-overs in that movie.

Anyways, I love this skyline, just needs some great tall ones to pierce up out of it and it will have it made. My vote ->9/10

I love that Aurora building!

This is a 9. It would get a 10 if it had a couple of towers 275m+. 235m is a bit too short to give it anything over 9 in my opinion.

Quote possibly the most attractive setting in the world.

Don't like Manhattam...very grey. Chifley looks like a typical manhattan skyscraper. Aussie buildings are much brighter. We are aggresive user of glass. :)

Topographic...other world cities just kill for. No doubt. Skyline looks fine even tough the height limit is 235m. Like the 235m height limit in CBD. Don't look good if other skyscrapers are taller than Centrepoint Tower. We don't want our skyline to look like Calgary..do we.

A bridge like that will enhance any skyline, plus you have the 2 prominant landmarks, the tower and the Opera House. The skyline is fantastic as well. It has the pyramid effect and it draws your eyes to the center. 9/10.

I work in the heart of Sydney's CBD at Town hall for last 15 years nd have loved every minute of it! ive been lucky to be able to build the scale model of the city for our planning dept.
I love to go on scenic walks and construction walks most days! and post results on these forums etc. The city itself has some spectacular skyscrapers and an erray of historic bldgs also.
I dont mind the 235m height limit. The 311m Sydney tower is high enough! very well proportioned city and amongst the finest natural harbour in the world!!

Nice pics in this thread. Make no doubt, Sydney's got a good Skyline, but like others have said it needs a couple of big 'uns. Not on the same scale as Chicago say, but at least a couple in the 300 - 320m range.

Ah well, we can always dream.

10/10 for organisation and attractiveness, also nice setting with the opera house, harbour bridge, and the actual harbour itself. Sydney/Centrepoint/AMP tower (what is it called now??) makes a nice focal point.

But 7/10 because it lacks height. 230m height for the tallest office building is disappointing. Would be nice if there were some buildings over 300m.

Overall= 8.5

A perfectly balanced skyline that doesn't need super height to be one of the top 5 skylines of the world. Good Planning and height restrictions in certain places have made sure the skyline has developed very well. I love how the buildings become taller from the outer edges till they summit at Sydney Tower.
Just a very dense and attractive skyline.

1 question, does this vote count towards North Sydney as well, because it really is a continuation of the main skyline, if it was then I'd vote 10.

It's just as well that eureka is in Melbourne- at 297m, it would be taller than AMP/ Sydney tower, and if built in close proximity would spoil the balance of Sydney's skyline.

Infact, even it was built on the fringes/outskirts of the skyline, I still think it would be too tall as it would create 2 focal centres (along with AMP tower), giving the skyline a U-shape.

September 4th, 2003, 06:30 AM
That would be a good thing, we could then rip the feral stumpy tower down once and for all!

I hate that it acts as a benchmark for the entire city, the tower is fostering a city of enormous density but lacking in height. We will end up with canyons of nothingness with little groud space and no skyline differentiation. Height provides better interest and right noe Centrepoint/AMP Tower/Sydney Tower is clammering to be seen from some parts of the city, as the focal point it needs to be at least as tall as CN tower so it can at least be noticed.

Toronto has the opposite problem. CN tower is so darn tall it totally dwarves their 300m buildings! They need to be building some 400m towers there to balance the skyline out.

True, the CN tower is too tall. Actually, Toronto's down town skyscrapers are not bad when it comes to height- I forgot the names, but I remember some of the heights:

309m (planned)
298m
275m
265m

But because the CN Tower is so tall, these buildings only look about 200m tall, in comparison, when in reality they are a respectable height.

Well as a proud sydneysider i love the city. I gave it a 10 and definately one of the best cities in the world easy top 5. Also it is really shooting up (just go and look how it looked only 10 years ago!!!) so it has a really bright future. However my only gripe is that there is no really tall buildings!!!!!!!!! I mean World Tower is 75 storeys which is good but we need a couple 100 storey buildings. Realistically how long can a tower built in the 70's hold the city back. My opinion rip the damn thing down and build an "empire state" type of builidng. I think it should be very tall but i agree not like the cn tower cause thats out of proportion but i mean something nice. It can even be another tower or extend center point/amp tower.. what ever. We cant really hold the city back. right now a couple 100 storey monters would look good cause the city is pretty dense. But to make it batter we need some complementary 80 storeys and then the proportion is back. Anyways it cool only wish a Chrylser type of building would be built in Sydney then im i heaven ;)

Well the AMP/sydney/centrepoint tower is one of those buildings you either love or hate. A lot of people on this forum hate it because it's presence has instigated the implementation of a height restriction for Sydney skyscrapers.

But I think it gives downtown Sydney a very good focal point, which many cities without such observation towers lack. If it was to be demolised, then something special and quite tall (400-500m) would need to be built,(like the CN tower, or Shanghai TV tower) to allow surrounding 300m+ towers to be built, in complement.

However, i don't see any of these things happening within the next 10 years. I don't think the AMP tower will be torn down, and the 235m height restriction is not likely to be lifted, preventing 300m towers from being built.

You know Sydney is quite beauful
But I have to say this city is really overrated
Definitely, It is not high enough to be the No 3 of the world.
It Still lacks many skyscrapers!(quantity is very poor!)

See this picture.
Do you really think this city skyline is No 3?

Are you talking about the actual city or the buildings? The buildings are nicely placed, but the set up of the city is shocking - I can't stand driving around the CBD in Sydney, it's simply painful. One way roads here, one way roads there, no through roads etc etc.

But yeah, the view is great and it looks great. 8.5/10

Staying in Sydney at the moment. Wow, this city is really beautiful, I think partly because of the fact it is by the harbourside , and together with popular icons such as harbour bridge and opera house. Buildings are not fantasticly tall, but, very dense and concentrated on the downtown CBD area. Heard there will be a construction of another tall tower, located right at the center of the CBD. Interesting to see, overall I give a 9.5/10

A very dense and reasonably tall city which is well proportioned, and well defined. I can't say too much because I may be biased, but few cities around the world can match it.

I love the pic posted by jmg on the previous page, looks like it from about 4 years ago, and if you were to see another pic like that from 2004 you'd see the huge growth that has occurred, and is still occurring around this city.

Needs to have something taller though!!!!!

Look you fool I attend Melbourne University and you have certainly not received and Architecture Degree, because I am studying architecture and if you cannot speak articulate or even write articulate english you have no hope of understanding many of the theories and ideas related with the field of architecture, nor would you be able to complete many of the tasks and required essays realted with the course, so you are a complete fool. Along with that people who have degrees don't usually brag about having them unless they are up them selves, and I think you either don't have a degree, which I tend to believe, or that you are simply up yourself, which is a very sad state of affiars.

Now leave Melbourne and Sydney alone, they're both fantastic cities in their own right

What can one say ? Well, actually not the easiest city to live and operate in: all those Harbour coves and headlands bend the roads around something awful - they should bulldoze and landfill, and get the whole thing flattened out and nice and straight like Melbourne and Chicago. Still, you can't have everything. 10/10 :okay:

Well i agree we arent in the same league as NY, Chi-town or HK but the pics are really misleading. The skyline is actually quite large, but you can only realise that in person. It takes me about 40 mins to walk one side to the other and i mean just walking, no stopping (except for traffic..sometimes) and you will be hell tired after it all. Also with the growth on the southern side, its has effectively (though not literally) doubled the skyline (ie. buildings). Its getting to the stage were the new 222m spire (190m to roof) Latitude is called by the developer as 'mid town' even though its had always been thought of as the southern end, with the shortage of land it doesnt look like stopping surging sothwards, but we can only see..
(if Sydney included North Sydney accros the bridge, then its skyline would be about 5 km long, im guessing just from driving)
As i said in person in the CBD its actually pretty good, due to the density and clusters. Your'e 100% correct the opera house and Bridge add a hell of a lot to the skyline, they make it from ordinary to great

But you see a skyline does not have to be as big as Chicago, NY or HK to be a great skyline. Those skylines are so big they are in a diferent league, but for a mid-sized city Sydney has a great skyline! It is more comparable to cities like Seattle or Toronto than the biggies u mentioned.

I don't see why you're trying to enforce one source of stats (opinions) on here, it's getting annoying seeing the spammed link everywhere. I think it's nice to have more then one collection of opinions and I'm happy to see a more realistic ranking on this site. I believe the ranking of a skyline is by look and design, location combining density and height. I think Sydney has a top mixture of them all. I've had a look at the big ones and they just don't appeal tokyo and bangkok look worse then Melbourne. New York city looks dull on many angles along with Chicago.

I always agree that Australia cities have much better quality of living than the rest of the world and I did recently read a report that Australia is ranked 3rd best in the world because of its infrasructure, GDP, GDP per capita, inflation, literacy, life expectancy, and so on... These are the merits they used to judge all countries. AND if we want to compare the skylines of the cities, you need some merits to judge, can you find a better merit to judge the city skylines?

Please browse and see more other cities in other continents and you may be 'suprised' that there are lot more cities have much denser buildings than Sydney.

Please go and see Makati City (Philippines), Jarkata, Vancouver, Panama City, Săo Paulo (just to name a few). Please do not forget to browse other cities in China and US. Sydney is definitely out of top 10, but still in top 100 hopefully.

Sydney should be seen from the water... coming back on the Manly ferry it really is an unforgettable sight. But coming in from land the city doesn't look nearly as enticing. Which is why I couldn't score Sydney a 10... just a 8,5. Melbourne has much more impact, skyline-wise. From every direction.

About a month ago Sydney and Melbourne were ranked quite high. Within a day all of the Australian cities dropped percepitiously. It makes you go mhmmm??? Also noticed quite an increase in the rankings for Chinese cities. Is this forum from Florida? LOL.

they';re not from Toronto i can tell you. the people there have far too many cool things available to do in their great city. they're from those 'other' places let me tell you where the living is kind of more miserable and where honesty mean nothing (hence just re-join the forum hundreds of times and vote).. that's OK.. you go ahead and do that. it will come unstuck for you and that method. that is the kind of dishonesty that leads to corruption and chaos and buildings being built shoddily and so on.

another thing is: don't worry about the rating chart. it doesn't mean too much., if those people of ....xxxxxxxx are happy that ...xxx xx is #4 or #5 or whatever or even #11 and they've corruptly made others drop, good for them. in the end, they'll get what they deserve in life

just keep posting you guys (all of you), saying what you like...

TheDon

Being originally from little old Cairns, and now back in Brisbane, Via almost 4 yrs in London, 9 months in Sydney and 6 Months in Melbourne.

Instinct tells me only a Melbournite can get so pissed about Sydney's unrivalled position internationally as Australia's premier city.

But as Melbourne has been stuffed too, we would normally blame our Pom, Kiwi or Canandian cousins for being concerned enough to fiddle the books in this way.

However elevated interest levels from Asia, the middle east and South America means there are a lot of people who could be a tad jealous of the attention given to the short term acheivements of a mere 20 million people in Aus.

Remember most of what you see in SYD, MELB, BRIS, GOLD COAST and PERTH has been built in last 50 yrs and we were only about 7 million strong back then.

Motive Jealousy.

A world class skyline, easily recognisable, with some fabulous landmarks in the form of the harbour bridge and opera house.

The only thing it needs is a supertall skyscraper to go right in the middle of that cluster. :)

i may be getting a lot of slack for saying this, but i think sydey's skyline is a bit overrated. i don't see what all the fanfare is about. here's what i think:

the skyline is definitely large, with a large # of 500+ -footers forming an impressively dense, mountainous highrise cluster. the form (note: not architecture) of the skyline reminds me of san francisco, toronto, and singapore. there are a few beauties like world tower, aurora place, and the chifley bldg but the rest, i'm must admit, isn't architecturally all that. some of the building styles are a little drab and stylistically odd as well, with pseudo-spires and what-not. there is a difference between a bland box vs an ornamented box that doesn't quite work aesthetically. in comparison, i actually much prefer the look of staid boxes in, say, toronto to some of the awkward bldgs in sydney. and i am NOT a fan of that observation tower. somebody said it right when s/he described it as a "bucket stuck on the end of a broomstick"! LOL so true. the stem looks so feeble.... i think the skyline would look *better* without it IMO.

when i look at the skyline shots of sydney in general, no one skyscraper truly stands out. i see a few beautiful designs in a sea of average buildings, but no definitive landmark tower. the observation tower is too thin to make a bold impression. nevertheless, i think sydney still has a great skyline in general, made only better by its setting and the only two true icons sydney's skyline has - the opera house and the harbour bridge.

8.5 here. :)

8.5 here. :)

thanks for that seriously. I think it's fair but of course everyone's thoughts are pretty subjective (including mine!). what I'd say right now is... in terms of the architecture issue you talk about: I think the city's got a good number of really nice towers. funnily enough, a couple of the ones you mention I wouldn't elevate personally. World Tower is nothing that special in my opinion although yeah it's growing on me and hey I kinda like it in the skyline. basically same thoughts for Chifley imo. on the other hand, one that you didn't mention, Governor Phillip Tower, I think that's one of the finest towers in the world. there's some others too that I admire.

lastly, concerning Centrepoint, ahhh Centrepoint! where to start. I have a kind of love/hate relationship. although that's not the best way to describe it. um, as i kind of said in another thread, sure it looks like a bucket of chicken on a stick or whatever... but the best way to describe it is I kind of like my bucket of chicken on a stick! maybe that's because the alternative (disliking it) would be too 'painful'. i think it's got more to do with the fact I really did grow up with that tower. it is so 1980 and like it or not, it's so> where Sydney was at the time, growing real fast, 80s emerging brash, confident, outward-looking, offbeat, different, fun. i sort of can't help but like it for that. gold turret and all. also: the growing up thing, again for good or bad, to me, THAT is an observation tower. if i grew up in TO, that would be the standard to me probably, but to me, the 'norm', the "cool, calm and restrained" (even, if you will) observation tower is our little 1980 yellow thing! strange! i know. as for its function, in a way it has become that part of Sydney that, like i say, is a glimpse into the city psyche and the development psyche especially of the late 70s/80s when it emerged. it's hard to explain but it tells a little i think about Sydney's American-ness then (which shifted around a lot and has changed), especially compared to other cities here. it certainly i reckon is a little insight into a bit of the city;s hedonism and brash, daring character. as for its presence in the skyline, to the same degree, i don't mind it.. and again (like the 'growing up with it issue') for me, 'the' generic observation tower doesn';t totally over-dominate the skyline. (and also, may i edit in, other Sydney things it perhaps captures and people even like it a bit for i think are: 'a little rough round the edges', just a hint of tacky but hangin in there like a survivor! , its imperfections i guess is one of the things that endears it to people a bit)

alright i could probably crap on another half hour just on the tower but i won't. is it a hugely-loved architectural addition among Sydneysiders themselves, no! not at all. we're more likely to laugh at or with it i guess. but it's not hated as such, and it's part of the furniture now. for my part, Seattle's needle (diminutive as it is) is probably my favorite. i have also come round to Auckland's weird one too! and Macau. oh yeah, and Nanjing but see that's probably just cos i luv Nanjing! anyway!

the thing about boxes... fair enough your comments. of course again it's all pretty subjective... for me, from here, it's pretty much this: Sydney's not a real boxy kind of place. Australians as a whole aren't. It's always that way a bit. the people responsible for the towers and the mood they're representing or trying to is kind of creative, alternative, offbeat, different, daring, liberal. That's Sydney in a way. and 'boxy' respectfully doesn't do Sydney :) well, never has really. even big 'n boxy isn't really Sydney. Sydney's sort of dreamy, poetic, unique, out there if you like... (casual, fun...) that boxy doesn;t do it justice

I wouldn't say they're jealous... beauty is in the eye of the beholder & everyone evaluates skylines using different criteria. I admit that I like skylines that have a beautiful natural setting balancing it, therefore my preference of Seattle & Vancouver over Melbourne or Dallas/Houston. I haven't been the biggest fan of Toronto's skyline, but I know plenty who would be more than impressed by it.

Funny enough two of my friends from T-dot (toronto) were just over and they were blown by the skyline. They loved it and couldnt get over its size (as someone pointed out almost a 1000 skyscrapers in the cbd). I agree 100% that it is much nicer than any pic can portray, i really think its one place that should be visited, but thats the case for any place (except i thought Pisa in Italy looks much better in pics than real life.)
I agree with centerpoint. Not a fan, it is growing on me but still would rather something else. I do think that there are a lot of buildings that arent architecturally great but we cant have all buildings works of art. It would look over done and stupid. I think a tall building would be cool, but honestly in real life it would do little difference in the narrow, and very dense CBD.

Sydney, what a beautiful city. I do not understand why Sydney is ranked so low in the Best Skylines section. My only guess is that it has some competitor cities (Melbourne?) that are truly jealous of it and rank it 3 or less.

Regardless, the only place outside of the US I want to live is Sydney, Australia. To me, the three greatest skylines in the world are:

1. Hong Kong 12/10
2. New York City 11/10
3. Sydney 10/10

Sydney has one of the best skylines around the world. The skyline is PERFECT. It balances itself out very evenly, forming a nice pyramid effect where all buildings gradually get taller until they reach the Sydney Tower. Then you have the Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and then finally, Sydney harbour! Living in Sydney has also resulted in more love for the city. Its close proximity to beaches, its parks; I'm just blabbering on, but this is my first post, and I wanted it to be devoted to Sydney. Why its rated so low, I don't know. In terms of height, any building that will be taller than the AMP Tower would just ruin the skyline. The skylines perfectly balanced. I wouldn't rate a city specifically on how tall it is; rather I'd rate it more on its aesthetics. And in that department, Sydney ranks very well with me! ;)

Topographic...other world cities just kill for. No doubt. Skyline looks fine even tough the height limit is 235m. Like the 235m height limit in CBD. Don't look good if other skyscrapers are taller than Centrepoint Tower. We don't want our skyline to look like Calgary..do we.

No, I certainly don't think Calgary's skyline is better than Sydney's, but I don't think that there's anything wrong with the fact that Calgary Tower isn't as tall as the cities's tallest buildings. It's silly to think Sydney wouldn't look as good if its tallest buildings were taller than its tower. Though it isn't as silly as the ridiculous rule preventing buildings in Montreal from being taller than the 205m Mount Royal. Montreal doesn't even have a skyline as big as Calgary's despite having 3.5 times the metro population.

P.S. Aussies really know how to squabble. You guys even outdid the Toronto thread and their boxy wars which I thought were pretty wild. :runaway:

^Yeah, come to think about it you're probably right.

It doesn't make much sense to say that Australia (or Canada and NZ) are copycatting the the U.S. They are all new world countries, former British colonies, relatively sparsly populated, and have a number of other factors in common. It's only natural that they would develop similiar characteristics. The Asian countries on the other hand have somewhat copyied the U.S./new world west. Their civilizations have been around for thousands of years and have developed their own style of architecture (which the new world has not). But Asia does tend to have (somewhat) different highrise architecture than the west, as well as fewer historic building than Europe due to natural disasters, and the common use of wood. However, I doubt that there would be the same kind of Asian highrise boom we have today if skyscrapers had not been popular first in the west.

Great... thanks aLOT... now I have to go there... it looks too good to miss. I suppose it's the new New York City... Looks more interesting to me, and from me, that's a good thing. ;)

Anyways, I know this is off topic, but how safe is Sydney? Compare it to other cities.

Really, Sydney is a very safe city. Any city in Australia in an international context is extremely safe. Our murder rates and such are very low. Guns are illegal here, so this type of crime is very rare.

But problems do occur. Australia is a very multicultural country, and Sydney is essentially the multicultural hub, along with Melbourne. So, some racial issues do exist, and there are distinct groupings of ethnicities scattered throughout the city.

Sydney's crime rate is on average above the rest of the countries, but it is also the biggest city, and that is to be expected in my opinion. However, in all honesty, i have never felt threatened when walking around Sydney, nor have i ever witnessed any extreme crime.

Well i think that is a bit of a cop out considering Melb is almost the same size but has the lowest crime rate of the mainland capitals.

Melbournites have a complex i swear. im not doubting you, but since you're so much more knowledgable, why dont you post some statistics to support, and to inform Sp!re.

I couldn't agree more, Sydney does Australia proud. They skyline by itself is impressive enough, but combined with the location, the icons surrounding it and it's density, it's the icing on the cake... 9.5/10
