I find it a bit clumsy looking, but it is tall and it looks important and statuesque nevertheless. How old is it?
Brettman220 December 23rd, 2002, 08:39 AM It was built in 1929
Mr. Detroit December 24th, 2002, 09:24 AM Thanks Brettman for posting this. I am not that computer literate, so if you could post the RenCen and One Woodward (Comerica Tower) that would be great. Thanks a lot though, nice pixs.
Brettman220 December 24th, 2002, 07:12 PM Mr. Detroit, I will post those two skyscrapers but not right away since Im not suppose to clog this form with all Detroit skyscrapers, check back in like a week.

MichiganDude December 29th, 2002, 01:21 PM Well whatever I gave it a 10 because it's absolutly stunning!
Here is what my book says about it:
DAVID STOTT BUILDING
1150 Griswold St.
Donaldson and Meier, 1929
Of all the skyscrapers built in Detroit in the 1920s, few captured the ideal of Eliel Saarinen's landmark Chicago Tribune proposal as well as this. A shaft of tan-orange brick rises from a reddish granite base to the twenty-third story, where it tapers in a series of discrete setbacks. Nearly freed from historical ornamentation, the modern skyscraper was emerging as a sli, evocative silhouette. A classic contribution to the building type, and a defining exclamation point of the Detroit skylin, Stott elevates tall building design to a fine art.

giallo December 31st, 2002, 08:25 AM I like the design but the colour is a little dull. 7.0
Byron January 23rd, 2003, 06:22 PM would look 100 times better without the exposed brick IMO 6/10

Michi February 19th, 2003, 05:14 AM 9.5! David Stott represents everything cities once were! It's amazing the generations of civilizations that have been able to have the Stott as part of their modern city! It is truely a keepsake with beautiful architecture.
...the spires are barely noticable!;)

hudkina November 8th, 2003, 04:12 AM Not one of my favorites, but striking, nonetheless.
I like the color. This and the Guardian brought a good amount of color to the old Detroit skyline.

Zuelas August 21st, 2004, 01:29 AM My favorite (even as a kid) Detroit skyscraper. The ideal form, beautiful color and soaring height impress me today..... imagine it 70 years ago. I'm looking at it now and while I'm living in Detroit, I'll always have a place w/a view of this beauty.

DecoJim June 25th, 2010, 07:08 PM In June 2010, the last tenants were told to leave. The David Stott Building is now empty. At the time it closed only 1 of the elevators was still working. There are rumors about it being converted from office to residential.

DecoJim June 16th, 2011, 08:26 PM In an earlier post in 2010, I stated that the building was empty. That was true until June, 2011 when the SkyBar Lounge Detroit opened on the ground floor with plans for a top floor lounge as well. The rest of the building remains empty. The building is owned by CID Investments (based in Florida, USA).
