You might want to read a book called "Please Kill Me." No pun... Or listen to a band called New York Dolls, or Velvet Underground, or suicide, or Television.

And I'm sure you know about CBGBs? Its the famous venue... in Los Angeles, right? Or is it new york?

Weren't the Ramones the fathers of punk as well? I know they were around in the late 70's, from New York, and were definitely punk.

New York City.

We did figured out about punk was born in LA since 1980s, that where punk community in Melrose and Fairfax was changed in early 1980s. I asked 46 years old guy who worked in Melrose area. He said this punk was born in LA after London. It was first in US.

New York City was born for rock music in 1950s.

I'm from West Hills in San Fernando Valley. I attended California School for the Deaf in Riverside (CSDR), I lived in dorm at mostly of weekday (Monday-Thurday). It was one and half hours away from Riverside.

I picked this message board cuz I'm very interesting about skyscraper and most of cities.

More like born in Nyc, reborn in England than bastardized and regurgitated in KaaaliforniA.

I sort of disagree. But all the same, CA has produced some real defining punk bands, and is considered the one of the "big three" in the punk genre. Social D, Exene Cervenka and John Doe of X, The Dils, The Dickies, Black Flag, The Germs, and other giants of punk were SoCal born. Punk has its roots in CA, NY, and London - BEFORE it got bastardized into emo-trash pop music.

Can't say I know much about Punk, but I can assure you that it was around in the late 70's. The first time I ever heard of it was back in 1979 when I when I was bused to an majority white school in the San Fernando Valley (Granada Hills). This one weird dressing kid had just transferred from Taft High (also in the SFV) was my 1st sighting. What I recall from some of my classmates, Taft High School was full on Punk Rockers, and generally our school hated them. A lot of them came over to Granada Hills, when expelled from Taft. So whether it started in NY or not, California (especially THE VALLEY). Surely we had enough of them in the late 70's, that it wasn't like they just arrived on the scene locally.
As a black person living in a black hood, Punk was not a style that captured our attention. So is was rather odd to others in my hood when I described a punk rocker. To us in my hood, a punk was someone either soft (afraid to fight) or it could also mean a person who was gay.

No offense, you was disrespect our culture so I'm rock, punk and metal guy. You don't need insult to culture if many punk was here. If you doing with wrong so they can make you into criminal like fighting, murder, rape and steal, that is true about world. You should respect to rock, punk and hip hop that nothing to be violence or criminal. Do not say this word again.

I'm mad cuz no deal, you sucks. End of isulting our culture. :weird:

blink, I'm deaf, also. I'm 28 years old and I graduated from California School for the Deaf in Fremont back in 1996. I left California when I was 24 years old. I'm happier up here than being in California. :) I ain't worried about where punk culture is born, to each their own.

Wow, I susprised that have 3 deaf forumer in SSC, that's awesome.

I'm in California School for the Deaf in Riverside, I will be graduate next year in June. I don't want live in Seattle cuz property tax and other tax was higher. (That what Nat said).

After graduate, I will start rent nice apartment in LA and start apply to have job but GLAD (Greater Los Angeles for the Deafness) will help to find good job for deaf people. I'm currently in West Hills, it was in San Fernando Valley of LA. I'm much happier in CA and all state in west than east coast.

You're absolutely right- it actually was around in the 60's
The Stooges, MC5 and as you mentioned New York Dolls, VU etc.
The English copied punk just like they copied the early American rock from the 50's- hence the British Invasion. And the only reason the British Invasion was successful was that the American industries quit playing real American rock and replaced it with Pat Boone and the like.

And don't forget Cleveland's Rocket from the Tomb.
And there's The Modern Lovers from Boston.
Somebody needs to google.

There were also punk movements in Texas and the Northwest
You should check out the " Nuggets" series on CD.

Okay can we stop talkin about this punk shit and go back to talking about LA? I wonder what Watts and South LA is gonna look like 20 years from now.(Compton ain't part of the LA jurisdiction) The 'hood has always been full of history. one thing I was surprised to know about was that at one point all the ghetto areas of today was at one point all white people. And that LA had the largest mass transit system in the WORLD. Now that's illness.

whatever. But yeah, Los Angeles is a great place. But it's impossible to believe there's over 200 races here. It's mostly just black people, white people, Mexicans, and Asians. And even though the light rail/subway system isn't too big, it takes you where you wanna go. Also, 3 of my favorite rappers and rap groups(Murs, Dilated Peoples, The Pharcyde) are from here, so LA is the greatest place to be!

Actually, from what I've read and seen here, LA has a very small percentage of blacks. Which is unusual because so much pop culture about African Americans are from here. But it is wierd, I think there aer more asians then blacks, but you sure don't think about that as quick as someone might bring up watts. Oh well. Great rap nonethelesss. I like (from the area) Tribe Called Quest, blackalicious, and Jurassic 5

Yeah.

In Los Angeles County, it have 2x more Asian population than black population. In city of LA, it have little more black population than Asian but just almost behind. Asian population will be suprassing (oncoming) black population in city of LA in around 2010.

In after 1992 LA riot, black population was starting declined in city of LA and same with county too. Most black family was leaving to Inland Empire, Las Vegas and Phoenix for better living.

Well, I understand black familys leaving the city as LA has done almost nothing to improve the ghettos and promote black pride. South LA -> South Central. Yeah, that did alot. Comon guys! The percent of people living in LA below poverty is so high its riduclous! If that isn't addressed then this city will burn again and it may be the end of any respect at all.

Yeah, that's what everyone who has a future wants in the ghetto, to make it out.
