I think mesaieed is going to have a major face lift. There are alot of facilities that are being built around the city, including serious infrastructure work.

true. thob is not allowed in nightclubs or bars, excluding some restaurants that serves alcohol. you see our, ahem ahem, friends come to doha, stay in hotels, get drunk and go imediately to the dance floor wearing thob, which is a very bad sight, and they become a laughing stock for the patrons who thinks all locals & gulf people behave like this.

I remeber a friend told me that this plays has a sign "no dogs, no locals, no sports shoes allowed." I was tempted to show up with a dog in thoub wearing nikes, just to see the reaction.

Unfortuantly when locals or 5aleeji get drunk they tend to forget where they are.

Guys,
That's something I feel angry about. How can there be racism towards Qataris in our own country? I mean I encounter people who speak broken English and think they're more intelligent than us and treat us like second class citizens. How should I approach these situations? It's worse in Qatar than in any other country I have lived in or travelled to.

last year, i went to a famous hypremarket in doha. after finishing my shopping, the bag boy at the end of the counter gave me my bags, i smiled at him and thanked him in arabic, he was asian. the man looked at me for a moment, with weired looks, but he didn't say anything, so i left.

few days later, went to the same hypermarket, did the shopping, payed, took my bags from the bag boy and i thanked him. the same thing happend, he looked at me, but this time he was happy. so, i pretended that i want him to carry the bags to my car. in the parking lot, i asked him why he gave me that look the other day? he said, in a deep voice, while he was looking at the ground " i've been here in the country for the past 4 months or so, and i never met a local who thanked me before"!

i was really astonished, and tried to come up with some excuses for my fellow qatari's atittude, but deep inside, i knew he's not going to buy it.

i'm telling you guys, i felt bad emotionally that night.

now, who's treating the other's as a second class citizens?

question: dont take this the wrong way, but it seem to me like yall got some nice facilities and stadiums, any particular reason why u folk havent ever produced a decent national football team?

Its a matter of time. We have a pretty good football time regionally. We've did good in the last couple of asian cups, we were runner ups to the World Cup, we've won the last Gulf Cup, in all four sports, soccer, vollyball, handball and basket ball. Our youth teams are always in the World Cup.

These facilities are very new and it wasn't until a couple of year back that the govt starting taking sports seriously, mainly because members of the royal family give strong sport to youth and sports.

Currently we have the Aspire Sports Academy were kids from all over Qatar are taken into this boarding school and are trained to become pro athletes. Check it out, kool website, www.aspire.qa

well i dont know how much truth there is to yall having a good team regionally, i guess you're right you havent done too bad in the Asian cup. But you're right qatar is a good team compared to the small Persian Gulf states, but that doesnt say alot.

and i thought Bahrain was runners up to the world cup, im pretty sure it wasnt qatar. anyhow i really love seeing progress in the region with regardfs to football, i welcome it because at the moment theirs not any competition, not just for us but regionally there arent too many good teams.

yeah those Persian Gulf countries for the most part suck(for lack of a better term) so its not a huge accomplishment but its a good step. good luck though hope you do well in asia in the future

I wouldnt say they suck. Sure they're not Italy or Brazil but by Asian standerd or Arab world standerd teams like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are doing pretty well. For countries that are really small and have a small pool of potential soccer players we fair quiet well.

Sure kuwait won it the most, but when was the last time kuwait got it.

New Cricket Facility in Qatar

Posted on Jul 12, 2011
Doha: A well-equipped cricket ground capable of hosting level 4 and 5 tournaments as per Asian Cricket Council (ACC) norms has been built in Mesaieed, 45 kilometres from the capital, to boost the game in Qatar where football reigns supreme.
The cricket facility complete with a lush green outfield, players' dressing rooms and spectators stands is part of a QR 22Million multi-purpose sports complex in Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), (The Peninsula) daily reported on Tuesday.
The top standard facility at MIC is about to change the way the game has been traditionally played here. It's a quantum leap from the hard sand and stone grounds on which cricket has been played in Qatar for the past 40 years or so.
Today the game can be played in a sports stadium, on grass instead of sandy and uneven terrain.
The story of the new facility began four years ago when word about a new multi-purpose sports stadium spread among the residents of Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC).
The request was put forth before the authorities, and what followed constitutes the building blocks of cricket history in Qatar.
MIC Cricket Organising Committee Manager Maliq Omer Al Dafna said, "The scope of cricket is increasing with every passing day in Qatar. With the help of business fraternity and the right kind of investment, this sport can actually see its boom here."
Almost every industry based in MIC has a cricket team of its own. With 23 major industries in which more than 6,000 expatriate professionals work, the organisers were hard pressed to seriously consider the construction of a large-scale cricket facility.
MIC Cricket Organising Committee President Ziyad Ghazi Al Zabet, said "We only wanted to serve the Mesaieed community. Along with sports such as football, basketball and handball, we decided to work on the cricket ground because we have an overwhelming majority of players and fans of this game in our community."
