No, I can't really see a dedicated parking area either ...unless they're planning to buy up the lots around PM. Otherwise, why not build Bicol's first underground car park? :)

[dx]
June 13th, 2006, 04:28 AM
Ei...what's up doc?...
Actually, there is a dedicated parking area for Pacific Mall patrons located at the back of Metro Gaisano. It's partly visible in the far right corner of the photo. It's not as wide and spacious as parking lots in other malls but it's landscaped and lit.

About the SAA gym, yeah, they built half of it first then completed the structure a few years later. I guess it's also bigger than the original gym which was destroyed by a typhoon in the '80s.

Ok, in that case, what about a rooftop car park? That way, shoppers get a nice view of Mayon and the city too. This reminds me of the multi-storey drive-thru old market of Tabaco. The view from up there was quite scenic.

ANOTHER MAYON ERUPTION??

From The Manila Times:

Monday, June 12, 2006

Mount Mayon volcano

Crater glow suggests a possible explosion

Legazpi City: It’s now the temperamental Mount Mayon’s turn to exhibit noticeable abnormal behavior, following reports of Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon spewing ashes just a couple of days back.

The luminous glow of Mount Mayon’s crater indicates a possible explosion any time, according to observers.

Ed Laguerta, Phivolcs resident volcanologist, warned the public to stay away from the six-kilometer permanent danger zone to avoid any untoward incident the moment that Mount Mayon explodes.

“Crater glow is visible even without telescope,” said Laguerta, adding that Phivolcs opted to maintain the alert level 1 status of Mount Mayon.

Residents staying within the slopes of Mayon told The Times that their wells are drying up and that several animals, particularly the pythons, are moving away from Mount Mayon.

Remedios Escobal, 29, recalled how several pythons from Mayon were seized sometime ago.

According to Cedric Daep who is head of the Albay Provincial Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO), more than 4,000 farmers from 35 villages living within the six-kilometer radius of the permanent danger zone are at great risks if Mayon volcano explodes during daytime.

Daep said that among the three cities of Albay, Tabaco has the most number of threatened persons with 1,167 from five barangays such as Buang, Comon, Buhian, Magapo and Oson, followed closely by Ligao with 513 and Legazpi, 430.

While other municipalities like Camalig have a total of 857 farmers: Daraga, 428; Santo Domingo, 349; Malilipot, 245; Guinobatan, 214; and Bacacay, 49.

Economic and agricultural activities are active within the slopes of Mt. Mayon. It is the habitat of farmers whose income depend primarily on the fertile slope.

On February 2, 1993, at least 77 farmers died when Mount Mayon suddenly exploded. Despite the educational campaigns made by the APSEMO, thousands of farmers continue to defy the warning of the authorities not to venture within the six-kilometer radius danger zone.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has placed Mount Mayon at alert level 1 since 2004. A sudden explosion, according to Laguerta, followed instantly by pyroclastic flow will be extremely dangerous.

Out of 221 volcanoes spread out over the seven volcanic belts in the country, 21 of them are considered active. Mayon volcano, a stratovolcano is the most active among these volcanoes.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/ms7.jpg

The MISIBIS Resort, Estates and Spa recently launched the Amalfi Condotels. The project, a billion-peso amenity, is one of the highlights of the resort development of Misibis, a barangay in the Cagraray Island here, which began two years ago.

“AMALFI” is an Italian word which means “a place that offers a beautiful view of the sea.”

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/condotel_vtype_b.jpg

And very true to its name, the AMALFI Condotels – a hotel and condominium combined, the first of its kind in Albay – offers a soothing view of a clean, world-class beach in Cagraray.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/misibisview2.jpg

The AMALFI is founded on the concept of bringing people to a relaxed lifestyle, from the hurly-burly of the city life to a serene living headed out of town, where one can experience fresh breezes and a picturesque panorama everywhere one turns – displaying the splendor nature.

The AMALFI is a nine-structure “condotel” composed of seven blocks of three-to-six-storey condominiums and two hotels worth at least P1.1 billion.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/condotel_ltype_b.jpg

Misibis Resort and Spa, in its soft opening by April 2007, other projected features of the resort are a cozy entry lounge and coffee shop, poolside sunken bar, restaurant and bar, free-form infinity pool and deck, spa and health clinic, 50 condotels, souvenir shop, recreational facilities and equipment, business center, and additional 15-room villas.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/m5.jpg

By April 2008 there will be additional 50 condotels, chapel, helicopter rides, basketball court, function rooms, convention hall, tennis court and lap pool.

By April 2009, there will be additional 25 condotels. And from 2010-2015 there will be a airstrip, golf course, farm lots, flora and fauna collection, fishing lagoon, outdoor amphitheater, cultural heritage center and museum, bowling lanes, driving range, forest park and trail, campsite, canopy walk, equestrian ranch, and marina yacht basin.

Misibis Land, Inc. is also operating the only cable car which crosses the Sula Channel. It is the country’s most longest cable car from station to station, taking one on a spectacular view of the Mayon Volcano and Sula Channel which serves as sanctuary of galleons during Spanish era and at present takes refuge to both big and small marine vessels during typhoons.

Misibis was categorized as “Triple A” resort by the Department of Tourism and is awarded the Philippines Third Tourism Economic Zone by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

Misibis’ master planned seaside community was recognized as the country’s Third Tourism Economic Zone by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

Misibis Land, Inc. hoped to draw in domestic tourism in the next two years, targeting at least 10-20 percent of tourist influx from Boracay and other beach resorts in the country,, or an approximate volume of 146,000 tourists per year.

^^The last time I checked it was. But maybe the data in that site is out of date. I get the impression that newly chartered cities are generally ranked low (cf both Ligao and Sorsogon, both of which only recently became cities). I'm not sure how Philippine cities are classified according to classes and what criteria are used etc...perhaps Monsi and Dex can enlighten us?

Still, IMO Tabaco deserves a higher rating.

If the Govt. stat. place Tabaco City as 5th Class, they are very inaccurate(maybe bec. they using wrong assessment), sometimes it's really hard to rely on them, Antiquated recording system or they just don't do their job properly.

SC denies Imperial plea to lift status quo order
By Florencio P. Narito

LEGAZPI CITY – The Supreme Court has denied the petition of Michael Imperial for the lifting of the status quo ante order which suspended the May 29, 2006 decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc declaring him winner in the May 10, 2004 mayoral race in Legazpi City over Mayor Noel E. Rosal.

Okay, so we can appreciate how far our beautiful little town has come, take a look at these three pics, circa 1915, when the Americans had a military camp approximately in the vicinity of today's airport:
http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c211/hawayano/PIScoutsatLingnonHill.jpg

If you look closely, would that be Cagsawa ruins' belltower sticking up in the background? Or is it a defect in the picture?

:okay: cool vintage pics @Hawayano, it's interesting to note how Mayon's crater changes over the years. By the way, i don't think that's the Cagsawa belfry; there's no body of water anywhere near Cagsawa as large as the one on the photo.

Mount Bariw looming above Albay District...the three towers: ABS-CBN TV4/MOR 93.9FM (left); GMA TV 12 (middle); and Digitel (right).
No wonder ABS-CBN TV4 Legazpi at 10kW has the widest reach in all Bicol: Southern CamSur, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Northern Samar and Masbate... Ditto MOR 93.9.
GMA 12 Legazpi is likewise beaming at 10kW; combine that with altitude... I hope LGU Legazpi compel all TV and FM stations to put up towers atop Mt. Bariw...
By the way... isn't it tempting to put up a sign ala HOLLYWOOD? :)

Since marketing commenced, the Call Center has over 100 applicants for training but after the tedious screening by JFK coaches and team leaders the number was trimmed down to 52 and from were the first batch of call center agents will come from.

Currently, the six week training on accent training, American geography, selling and rebuttals, and product training is on its 4th week and the trainees have already developed their confidence and skills. Everyone is looking forward to the opening of the Call Center on June 19, 2006.

More agencies join team opening Pantao Port to Visayas/Mindanao

More national agencies have joined arms to the call of Governor Fernando V. Gonzalez to expand the study team on how to open Pantao Port in Libon, Albay as doorway to trade, commerce and tourism going to Western Visayas and Northern Mindanao. In the meeting held last week presided by Gov. Gonzalez at the Governor’s Conference Room of Albay Capitol, the Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Ports Management Office (PMO) have given their nods in expanding the study team to make Pantao Port as the portal in shipping the targeted volumes of manufactured and agricultural products from Albay and its neighboring provinces going to trade and commercial centers in Visayas and Mindanao.

Governor Gonzalez said there is now a need to create a market shift and develop at this stage trade and travel centers to and from the two big island regions that would eventually make Albay as the Gateway to the South.

“Pantao Port is the most strategic point to do this,” Gov. Gonzalez explained, saying that shipping cost would be much lower using Pantao Port and permit lesser travel time, citing that sea vessels will be made to save time crossing China Sea from the islands of Visayas and Mindanao going to Metro Manila. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the border separating Daraga from Legazpi is:

Bicol University lies in the middle of the border itself, (area with that track field) I've always wondered if they use different addresses

Legazpi: One of 5 model markets in RP
By Florencio B. Narito

LEGAZPI CITY – The Legazpi City Public Market (LCPM) was chosen one of the five model public markets in the country today.

The good news was announced by Ralph Lasin, LCPM administrator, during an interview with Bombo Radyo-Legazpi last Sunday. He said the Huwarang Palengke 2006 is a project of the Department of Agriculture.

Lasin thanked City Agriculturist Jesus Kallos for informing and encouraging him to join the contest.

“At first I had some reservations because we have many problems facing the Legazpi City Public Market,” Lasin said.

“I asked Mayor Noel E. Rosal if I should join the contest. The mayor asked me in return if I could do it. I replied that I could do it if I get the support of the people who are supposed to help me,” Lasin further said.

He revealed that the preparation for the evaluation was made last April. Fortunately, the Legazpi City Public Market was chosen the regional winner.

“We learned about the results of the national evaluation by the middle of June after the oversight committee informed us that LCPM was among the top five public markets in the country,” he added.

Among the criteria for the selection of the model public markets were: physical requirements; sanitation and health; and consumer protection.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/LPMarket.jpg
photos by Monsi

Chosen the top five model public markets in the country are the public markets of Davao City, Gen. Santos City, Cebu City, Legazpi City and San Fernando City, La Union.

Each of these city public markets will receive a cash prize of P500,000 to be given during awarding ceremonies to be announced later.

The City Government of Legazpi plans to use the cash prize to buy a garbage truck for the use of the public market, Lasin said.

The three-story new Legazpi City Public Market was inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last year.

I also had a plan on making a 3D project for Legazpi City and Daraga. But my plans is a bit on a grander scale by making a roadmap considering the ground elevation as given by google and putting the buildings. It would be better if Mayon Volcano would be included. But I always end up only in thinking about it and not doing it.

You can zoom, rotate, tilt and pan your view. But I guess based on your previous post that you used google map. Download Google earth, it's free.

Legazpi: One of 5 model markets in RP
By Florencio B. Narito

City Classification

Highly Urbanized Cities - Cities with a minimum population of two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by the National Statistics Office, and with the latest annual income of at least Fifty Million Pesos (P50,000,000.00) based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer.

Independent Component Cities - Cities whose charters prohibit their voters from voting for provincial elective officials. Independent component cities shall be independent of the province.

Component Cities - Cities which do not meet the above requirements shall be considered component cities of the province in which they are geographically located. If a component city is located within the boundaries of two (2) or more provinces, such city shall be considered a component of the province of which it used to be a municipality.

Cities are classified according to average annual income based on the previous 3 calendar years.

* 1st class - P250 million or more (Legazpi, Naga)
* 2nd class - P155 million or more but less than P250 million
* 3rd class - P100 million or more but less than P155 million (Iriga)
* 4th class - P70 million or more but less than P100 million
* 5th class - P35 million or more but less than P70 million (Tabaco, Ligao,Masbate, Sorsogon)
* 6th class - Below P 35 million

BUTUAN CITY, June 26 Asia Pulse - The Spanish government has extended a grant of P190 million (US$3.56 million) to the Philippines to support the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPFP) in Bicol and Caraga regions.

Caraga and Bicol are the only two regions in the country that can avail of the funding under the 5th RP-Spain Joint Commission for Cooperation, with the Department of Agriculture (DA) as the lead implementing agency.

Eliseo T. Tila, chief of the planning division of DA 13, said the project will focus on activities supporting the value-added agricultural products such as coconut, cassava, pineapple, corn and rice.

Meanwhile, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations will also grant P12 million to support the Arroyo government program livelihood assistance to the provinces of Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur and Surigao del Norte.

The funding is part of the DA-FAO Project Emergency Rehabilitation of Agri-based Livelihood for disadvantaged farmers and returning displaced people in Mindanao.

The project component includes cassava, corn and banana production, poultry and livestock production.

Nah! I don't think PM killed their businesses... they did it to them selves. You know most of the businesses in Pinas used to thrive on protectioneering. So when the market became delregulated...they slowly died coz not even their politko kumpares can protect their business interset anymore. If they prepared for the "competitive market" when it came in... they would have fairly survived by now. Its as simple as that. They should have seen PM as an oppurtunity not a competition.

Small Talk Cafe and Gasthof's Legazpi

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b332/MatteoMatt/pinangat.jpg

After hitting two markets and meeting up with the rest of the group that I was traveling with in Legazpi, we were, of course, famished and decided to try the Small Talk Café for lunch. My first impression was quite good, a charming café with a bit of character located in an old house off of a main street. It had shades of those early restaurants in Malate that might be described as being quaint. There was a huge reservation for 20 or more for lunch so they had trouble seating our party of 8 but after some adjustments they got us squeezed in. The first hint of trouble was with the arrival of the menu. It screamed Western and Pinoy favorites and Bicolano food was relegated to a small segment of the menu. I realize most Bicolanos have fabulous food at home and have no desire to go out and pay for it in a neighborhood restaurant so I decided to straddle the menu and order an assortment of Filipino-ish dishes and hope for the best. We ordered Sinigang, Caldereta, Spare Ribs, Pinangat, Bicol Express, Fried Chicken, etc.for full article http://www.marketmanila.com/archives/small-talk-cafe-and-gasthofs-legazpi-city

guys, isn't legaspi affected by mayon volcano's seeming eruption?

Monsi
July 15th, 2006, 05:28 PM
...imminent eruption expected within weeks. Life goes on...

It was just a matter of minutes; I took those pictures in the boulevard early last night; had I lingered, I could have
caught the lava trickles, which I was told flowed around 6:30 p.m. Going to work this morning I saw lava flowed near the summit; it would have glowed if it were night.

Here, I took this pix (your pardon, Sinjin, for the large format) early afternoon at the Boulevard...

Such a realization of how hard life can be back home, yet these kids show simple joy through their innocent yet genuine smiles with just their pictures being taken.

Hi mga mauragun na mga taga ligazpi! kumusta na kamo jan!

My name is Patrick. I was born in the Leagazpi City 38 years ago in the clinic right beside REX Hotel on the right side of St Raphael Church. I graduated in Divine Word High School Dept. back in 1985. I was the one playing the cymbals for our drum and bugle corps from 1982-85 (i dont wanna be in CAT thats y i joined) hehehehe! Im in Tracy California right now (60 miles east of San Francisco). Ive been here in the states since 1985.

I would just like to thank everyone for opening this forum. Every since i discovered this page....Iyo na lang ini ang pig papara iling ko everytime i go on line avid fan na ako! Nakaka pungaw pero at least i can see the developement of my home town!

Thanks for welcoming me again! haha! Please to meet you folks! yeah I left legazpi when I was 16 years old, and spent more than half of my life here in the US. Pero feel ko na ive lived in legazpi forever. Legazpi's memory is the dominant in my mind. A city with only 1 trafic light, the park where linandag na maiz and cheap and thin pork BBQ dipped in vinegar is only 1.50P. And who can forget fishball! I left when LCC is still in 2 buidings Phase 1 and Phase 2, there where no McDonalds, Jollibee, Chow King...or the Pacific Mall . I remember Joya and Preciosa where Shakeys used to be! yes folks! we got shakeys in those days. And Kentuky Fried Chicken too! I think KFC closed in the early 80's, and Shakeys closed at thesame time. The movie theatres use to have a theme on what they show....Joya and Preciosa (the delapedated Rosel theatre now) shows new releases but later on Bomba! Cine La Trinidad new releases too but in those days we have to wait about 3 months for new movies to come to Legazpi. Thanks to J&B we are able to watch the latest movie releases! Belen Theatre where LCC stands now shows Just plain BOMBA and concert movie...I saw The Song Remains Thesame in belen and Hey Jude. I remember the arch inside belen...outlining the screen. if you go inside LCC second floor....u still can see the arch and where the screen used to be. Who can forget LOLA theatre...thats where I saw my first movie by my self. when I was around 11.....and bought records at Manly's right beside Pantranco Bus station used to be. I remember when my Dad woke us up to watch a building on fire back in 1976...it was a hardware store on fire, it was replaced by Bangko Filipino and finaly LCC right beside BPI! And also the old legazpi public market has an elementary school at the 4th floor, that burned down too! And hehehehe....Elen's Grocery....the only grocery I know when I was Growing up.....ohhh shoot!...I've got alot of memories to share with U but got to go to work!.....Catch U guys again Later!

Hey! I'm glad that i aroused some curiosity here! hehehe! yes we do have Shakey's and KFC in Legazpi city before. Shakeys is located at the entrance of now padlocked Rosselle arcade and cinema. There was a looking thru glass so U can see how pizza was made, and its got a colored TV on the overhead corner of the restaurant. You can see these poor kids peering thru the glass....quite a pittyfull site!

KFC was located at the right side of the evangelical church near old albay...leftside of where jollibee is now located. My mom said that it opened in the late 60's and Colonel Sanders personally visited the opening ceremony....I still remember the front of it...there was this huge wooden carving of colonel sanders in front of the restaurant.

Back to movie theatre themes...Lola theatre showed mostly tagalog and outdated american films...anyone remember the glass mosaic portrait of a man sitting on the way up to the balcony?...that freaked me out when I was a child. REX theatre showed filipino movies and was known to be infested by "Surot" living on the seats...I imagined everyone is scraching their butt coming out of the theatre....cant imagine now a movie house without aircon!....phew!

Albay theatre showed mostly sci-fi and horror films...i saw amytville horror and tarantula...and superman at albay theatre....and oh...right in between movies...they always play America's greatest hits!...and Belen theatre alwais plays...Hall and Oate's H2O album...Maneater...etc...I saw Raders of the Lost Ark D/w The Empire Strikes Back there....

In Daraga...Elta...always shows filipino action movies...and the Plaza theatre with the "10 commandment's parting of the sea" painting...that painting was never taken down eversince they screened 10 commandments back in 1955...it was awesomely beautiful!...Plaza shows outdated international films...and who can forget ELVIC theatre...They always show martial arts fiilms! its the movie house that stands on the way to sorsogon....is that theatre still around?...

Well thats all for now folks!....Im still digging those pictures up...ill post it as soon as possible!.....AHHHH! MAYON IS SO BEAUTIFUL! my kind of woman!...dangerous but gracefully beautiful!...

CENTRAL PHILIPPINES
‘Super region’ infra to cost P300 billion

By Irene R. Sino-Cruz
Inquirer
Last updated 03:01am (Mla time) 07/17/2006

Published on Page A21 of the July 17, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

CEBU CITY—Infrastructure requirements for the five-year development of Central Philippines could reach P300 billion, according to Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Romulo L. Neri.

Neri, who was interviewed after the joint Regional Development Council (RDC) and Cabinet meeting held on July 7 at the Malacañang sa Sugbo here, said part of the amount would come from the government and the rest from the private sector through a build-operate-transfer scheme.

He could not say, however, how much of the amount would come from the government. The key infrastructure projects for Central Philippines include construction or rehabilitation of roads, ports, airports, power, irrigation and flood control projects, Neri said.

During the opening of the joint RDC-Cabinet meeting, President Macapagal-Arroyo identified Central Philippines—composed of the Visayas, Bicol, Palawan and Romblon, Camiguin and the Mindanao islands of Dapitan and Siargao—as the tourism center of the Philippines.

The President said the government must increase investments in education and infrastructure to make Central Philippines the tourism hub.

“To their competitive advantage, we will bolster education, invest in infrastructure and encourage greater tourism investments and business process outsourcing in Cebu and its immediate neighbors, like Dumaguete,” Ms Arroyo said.

During the RDC-Cabinet meeting, Neri said the national government identified several strategies for Central Philippines.

These include harnessing the vast coastal and marine resources and addressing the small islands’ fragile ecosystem; linking the islands through efficient transportation and communication facilities; promoting the Southern Tourism Center; developing the potentials of agribusiness, export and small and medium enterprises; pursuing responsible mining and quarrying; optimizing power potentials and ensuring adequacy and sustainability of the supply; and enhancing social services.

During a presentation on Central Philippines, Neri noted that the region accounted for 39 percent of the country’s total coastline. It has several rich fishing grounds, such as the Visayan Sea, Lamon Bay, Lagonoy Gulf, Romblon Pass, Bohol Sea, Sibuyan Sea, Iloilo Strait, Tañon Strait, Samar Sea and Leyte Gulf.

The Central Philippines’ share in the country’s total fish production is 37 percent.

The government is also proposing the establishment of mariculture parks in the super region. Mariculture is the cultivation of marine organisms for food.

In addition to the 10 existing parks, the government plans to set up mariculture parks in Samar, Camotes Island in Cebu, Bohol, Negros and Palawan.

Central Philippines also contributes 20.8 percent of gross domestic product, he added. Its growth centers include Metro Naga, Metro Legazpi, Metro Tacloban, the cities of Puerto Princesa, Iloilo, Bacolod, Dumaguete and Tagbilaran, and Metro Cebu.

The national government also plans to improve the linkages of the existing nautical highway by developing or rehabilitating lateral roads that connect to existing or proposed ports with roll-on, roll off facilities.

The implementation of the various infrastructure projects is expected to reduce travel time from Mindanao through Visayas to Luzon, and vice versa, by 10 hours.

IF ERUPTION IMMINENT
Farmers to be ‘forcibly’ evicted from Mayon danger zone

Agence France-Presse
Last updated 02:19pm (Mla time) 07/19/2006

LEGAZPI CITY -- A disaster official said on Wednesday that farmers still within the seven-kilometer (4.2 mile) danger zone declared around the crater of restive Mayon Volcano in Albay province would be “forcibly” removed from the area if and when volcanologists determine that an explosive eruption is imminent.

"We are worried about the people who remain in the permanent danger zone. There are livestock in there as well," said regional disaster coordinating council official Angel Capili after surveying Mayon from the air early Wednesday.

Rescue officials on Wednesday warned farmers to leave the fertile slopes of the volcano as it spewed lava for a fifth straight day amid fears of a major eruption.

The farmers work on the lower slopes of the cone-shaped, 2,462-meter (8,077-foot) central Philippines mountain thought at risk of an explosive eruption and whose lava flow has lengthened to about three kilometers (1.8 miles).

Capili did not estimate the number of people who remain within the danger zone.

No evacuations have been ordered outside the zone, but volcanologist Ed Laguerta told Agence France-Presse an explosive eruption could threaten the lives or properties of up to 70,000 people, including residents on the outskirts of Legazpi city.

Mayon's mild eruption continued at dawn Wednesday, marked by a fiery shower of lava fragments that fell up to four kilometers (2.4 miles) below the crater.

"Seismic activity apparently resumed to high levels," suggesting lava extrusion and rock falls, the government's seismology institute said in its latest advisory.

"At this stage Mayon continues its mild eruption with little or no explosions," it said.

"The public however is reminded that explosions are still very possible and the probability of life-threatening pyroclastic flows resulting from an explosive eruption remains high."

These flows refer to superheated dust and rocks that travel down a volcano's flanks at great speeds during an explosive eruption.

Mayon, about 300 kilometers (176 miles) southeast of Manila, is one of 22 active volcanoes in the Philippines.

It has erupted 47 times in recorded history, including in 1814, when it buried the town of Cagsawa killing an estimated 1,000 residents. Mayon's most recent major eruption was in 2001.

Mayon crater collapse forces evacuation

Authorities on Thursday evacuated residents in Santo Domingo, Albay after a portion of Mayon volcano's crater collapsed and threatened the town and nearby areas with lava, ANC reported.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) confirmed that a crater collapse resulted in the increased threat of lava flowing from the summit onto Sto. Domingo and nearby towns.

Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz, NDCC chairman, had ordered the evacuation of those living within Mayon's six-kilometer danger zone, which remains off-limits.

Alert Level 3 is still in place as lava flows and seismic activity continued. Officials said evacuation will be enforced once the alert level is raised to 4.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the lava flow had reached more than three kilometers from Mayon’s crater.

Meanwhile, students and teachers of a school in Legazpi City heard a loud explosion from Mayon Thursday afternoon. A witness said "a big ball of flare" flowed down the slope of the volcano. The school is two kilometers away from the danger zone.

The local government immediately suspended the classes in the school.

Director Renato Solidum of PHIVOLCS said the loud bang was caused by a secondary pyroclastic flow or the movement of the fragments due to the collapse of lava fragments.

Solidum said residents need not worry because the pyroclastic flow is not the direct result of the pressure or activity inside the volcano.

Cebu Pacific opens Legaspi route for only P99

Cebu Pacific (CEB) will open daily flights to Legaspi City, starting August
17, 2006, for a special introductory fare of only P99 one-way. CEB will
utilize its brand new A319 to service the new route. The Manila-Legaspi
service departs Manila at 1:30pm, arriving in Legaspi at 2:20pm and leaves
Legaspi at 2:50pm to arrive back in Manila at 3:40pm.

Lance Gokongwei, CEB president and CEO, said the introduction of the
Manila-Legaspi service reinforces the airline¡¯s vision and commitment to
make travel within the country more affordable and convenient for both
local and international travelers. ¡°We are positive that our entry to
Legaspi will help strengthen local tourism because of the low fares we are
introducing to this destination. We want to make it possible for every
Filipino to fly.¡±

Legaspi City, hailed as the ¡°Gateway City in Bicol¡± is known for its
various tourist attractions such as the famous Mayon Volcano and the
Cagsawa ruins¡ªa church buried when Mayon erupted in the 18th century, the
Hoyophoyan cave and the Tiwi hot springs¡ªwhich is the province¡¯s source of
geothermal power.

CEB will introduce its Manila-Legaspi service with a seat sale fare of only
P99 one-way, more than 95% lower than the current airfare to Legaspi. The sale runs from July 20 to 27 only and is for travel from August 17 to October 19, 2006. After the seat sale, the year-round ¡®Go¡¯ fares to Legaspi start at only P568 one-way, this is a reduction of more than 76% from the current regular airfare.

The ¡®Go¡¯ fares are exclusive of regular surcharges and government tax.

The Legaspi service is CEB¡¯s 3rd new domestic destination launched this
year. The airline has earlier opened its Dipolog and Laoag service. The new
routes are part of CEB¡¯s expansion program as its new Airbus fleet
continues to arrive. At present, CEB operates nine brand new Airbus
aircraft for its domestic and regional flights.

This new service will be CEB¡¯s 18th domestic destination. CEB also flies to
Hong Kong, Seoul, South Korea and will open its Singapore service on August
31.

Now in its 11th year, the airline pioneered low fares in the country and
introduced travelers to on-time service, e-ticketing, and on-line booking,
setting the standards for airline innovation in the local aviation
industry.

...Hola, Oli! Long time no see...thanks for the piece of good news on Cebu Pacific finally deciding on Legazpi. I was only hoping for an MWF to alternate with Air Philippines' T-Th-Sat (Mla-Lgp-Mla, codeshare with PAL PR-959/960) and T-Th-Sun (Ceb-Lgp-Ceb). Bad news for PAL's monopoly (Air Philippines is no alternative as the difference in fare is a just matter of a hundred pesos or two and you'll have to make do with much older B737-200s). Wow! Finally, a regular brandnew Airbus A319 service, daily, and definitely a better alternative to PR's older Boeing 737-300 (although PAL will replace the remaining 737s with A320s in 2007). Better for the pocket, also. Imagine PR-277/278 more expensive than other sectors towards more wealthy cities in the Visayas and Mindanao. What irony, a poor Bicolano/a has to shell out more than P7000 per round trip! Cebu Pacific na ta ababa an pliti; making air travel affordable. I checked their website; P568 one way, barato pa kaysa pinakabarato kan Cagsawa (of course there will be fuel and other sur-charges)! Ma-bus ka pa kun malulu'go ka man sana sa Rolando Andaya (Quirino) Highway, samantalang with CEB's entry, magiging mas barato mag-eroplano. I hope PAL will not pull out, otherwise, it will become monopoly all over again. PAL should instead compete and introduce their Super Saver Five which they have in other key cities where CEB, Air Philippines, SEAir, and Asian Spirit fly.

Yes Dex, it is habagat...SALAMAT TA HABAGAT! Otherwise, kun nag-crosswind just like what happened June 24, 2001, we could have had a trickle of ashfall. Kun amihan, Third District man an manganganaan ki abo. When that ashfall happened this morning, while I was already in Marquez just below MIH, I saw PR-277 Boeing 737-300 gliding along, flying low above the City for her approach to Runway 24. Ashfall pose danger to commercial aviation. Again, sana dai mag crosswind. Thanks for the interest, Sinjin.

...will be more expensive; they charge in excess of P900.00 one way; even their Business Class, their cheapest at P750 would be more expensive than Cebu Pacific's P568;
although I reckon with fuel charges and all it will be around P1,500-P2,000, still way lower than PAL's more than P3,000+.

MAYON ERUPTION 2006 MORE PICS

FROM THE BBC:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/drfeelgood17/amayon1.jpg

Villagers living near Mount Mayon in the Philippines have been preparing to leave after the volcano emitted huge clouds of ash and smoke.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/drfeelgood17/amayon2.jpg

The 2,462m (8,000ft) peak is the country's most active volcano. It began emitting lava, ash and boulders last week. Scientists say a major eruption could come within weeks.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/drfeelgood17/amayon3.jpg

The government has told 4,000 people who reside in a 6km (four-mile) danger zone surrounding the volcano to leave, but many have decided to remain.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/drfeelgood17/amayon4.jpg

But ash clouds early on Thursday created panic among residents, some of whom rushed to collect family members.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/drfeelgood17/amayon5.jpg

Despite the danger, visitors have come to the region to see the rumbling volcano.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a141/drfeelgood17/amayon6.jpg

It has erupted around 50 times in the last 400 years. More than 1,200 people died when it erupted in 1841.

Yes, mostly in Naga City and Minalabac. In Legazpi, would be distant relatives. My mother grew up in Tagas then in Bacacay.

Prices of native products (e.g. bags, slippers, etc.) are a bit higher in Cagsawa Ruins Park than those shops found in Satellite Market (Tahao Road) and in Daraga.

I miss using these baskets, bilaos, salakots and banigs. There was a time they sell those woven handicrafts and native baskets in cow-driven caravans. I wonder if there are still those caravans plying their wares on the roads? Perhaps not.

Ah same here. That's great, post ka pa ki dakol na pics. :) Diit lang kitang locally-based forumers digdi sa SSC.

@Lili, I don't see cow-driven caravans anymore here in Albay. I guess in other provinces they still have those. Too bad, 'cause it figures prominently in one Wow Philippines TV Ad.

Daraga Church - This beautiful church was constructed after the Mayon eruption of 1814 which buried the town of Cagsawa in mud and rocks, killing thousands of people and devastating the town. Only the belfry of the church remained as a testimony to Mayon's destructive power. To prevent a similar disaster from happening, the people of Daraga decided to build a church on top of a hill. This church overlooks the town of Daraga and has a good view of the volcano, looming in the distance.

Authorities warn against forest fires around Mayon

Article posted July 29, 2006, 11:52 am
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned on Saturday against forest fires in the path of lava flows from Mayon Volcano.

Lava flows from Mayon's crater had spread 5.4 kilometers near the Bonga Gully and threatened the forest and villages in the area.

Phivolcs reported that lava elevation already reached 320 meters. At least 394 tremors and four low-frequency volcanic quakes were monitored in the last 24 hours. Sulfur dioxide emission was at about 6,089 tons per day.

Phivolcs maintained Alert Level 3 over Mayon and warned residents around the area against going into the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Volcanologists warn of imminent eruption of Mayon

Article posted July 31, 2006, 3:56 pm
Volcanologists on Monday said field reports show “very high" indication that Mayon Volcano's eruption may occur within days as sulfur dioxide gas readings has gone at about 3,000-10,000 tons daily last week, compared to the normal level of 500 tons.

“The scenarios will be continuous lava flow or there might be a shift to an explosive phase," Renato Solidum, chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

He said based on previous events, a steady increase in sulfur dioxide emissions could culminate in an eruption. A sudden decrease after very high readings could also result in a large explosion, characterized by tall ash columns and pyroclastic flows, which are clouds of extremely hot gases, ash and other debris that race down mountain slopes at high speed, incinerating everything in their path.

Earthquakes may signal rising magma levels and the “inflation" of the mountain, all signs of a possible violent eruption, Solidum said.

Sulfuric emission was accompanied by 388 tremor episodes and lava flow, cascading down the southeast slopes, and advancing 100 meters farther to the Mabinit Channel at 6:30 Monday morning. A bright orange summit glow was exhibited on Sunday caused by lava coming from the crater.

Ground deformation is apparent caused by the continuing intrusion of magma inside the volcano, Phivolcs said.

Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daraga) says the name Daraga came from a kind of tree that grew in abundance in the hill where now stands the Catholic church with Baroque architecture.

^^ ka daring naman ng mga 'to..they're directly on the path of a pyroclastic flow if ever Mayon erupts. Walang takas pag pumutok, this end of the lava flow is about 6 kilometers from the crater. Pyroclastic flows can travel at a speed of 150 km/h.

When we were kids, we used to joke that Ligñon Hill is the 'child' of Mayon. hehe. I'm not sure but i heard that hill/cinder cone was formed by volcanic activity different from Mayon. It's already extinct; otherwise Phivolcs wouldn't set up their obsevatory on its slopes.

^^Meanwhile, at the south side of Mayon, facing Legazpi City, the crater collapsed in the eruption of '93. Now the collapsed portion is slowly being filled up by fresh lava deposits.

Mayon's power of destruction and creation is nothing short of amazing. I love to say it's really shaped by the hand of God.

While Mayon is in Alert Level Three, Mount Bulusan is already tagged at Alert Level One from Alert Level Two according to a radio station here in Legazpi City. It is good that Bulusan already simmered down. I hope that Mayon Volcano does not proceed to a hazardous eruption.

Those pictures with lava really look dangerous, but how I wish I could see them first hand. heheheh. :tongue3:

Hi! I'm really awed by the beauty of Mount Mayon. I can only appreciate its beauty from a distance. I can see its peek on board the plane whenever i go to the Visayas. Can anybody from Legazpi provide infos about the accomodations and price of the hotels there? I'm planning to visit Legazpi on the later part of August. I'd surely appreciate the help. Thanks in advance. :)

Hey, Six! ...so you're a plane spotter... You've got a Boeing 737-400 there. A dash 400 is distinguished from the dash 300
by the two emergency exit windows/doors just above where the wings join the fuselage (-300 only has one each side).
PAL has only one remaining dash 400 in its fleet, so that is it; it carries 168 pax versus dash 300's 148.

I regularly check AIRPLANES, AIRLINES & AIRPORT DISCUSSION PART VIII and discovered that DEX is also a plane spotter!

Here's PR 277 Boeing 737-300 approaching Runway 24 arriving on time this morning (ETA 0750)... PAL has only three -300's left
and by 2007 all 737s will be replaced with A320's and A319's.
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j246/Monsigh/PR277Boeing737300.jpg
...who says PAL means Plane Always Late? I hope with its entry here August 17, Cebu Pacific will live up to its claim, "the new Filipino time."

So by next year, we'll be welcoming either an Airbus A319 or A320 here in Legazpi? What airliner does Air Philippines use for the MNL-LGP-MNL route? How about Cebu Pacific?

Thanks! For PR 277/278, I reckon it would be an A319 as it would have the same payload as the Boeing 737-300. About Cebu Pacific, let's wait for their maiden flight August 17 (tibaad mapakat, sana dai mag-level IV and restiveness kan Mayon!); I think they would use the A319 to match PAL's current capacity; i.e., 737-300. As to Air Philippines, I hope they acquire what PAL will be disposing next year, the remaining dash 300's. I think we should discuss these in the Airplane thread :). By the way, Tsinoy is also into planes...

Here, I think PAL and Air Philippines are starting to feel Cebu Pacific's threat to their monopoly...
