Mond87 October 26th, 2006, 05:24 AM All is fare in air travel war in Bicol
By Delma L. Peyra

BRIAN Barranda, a Bicolano executive now based in Manila, used to lament: “I can’t help comparing that air fare to Cebu, where I am often sent on business trips, costs much less than a plane trip home to Legazpi.”
The distance parameters: Legazpi, the regional center of Bicol, is only 534 kilometers south of Manila, while Cebu City is 587 km.
In 2005, when Philippine Airlines was the lone airline plying the 45-minute flight to Manila, a plane fare cost more than P3,000 one way.
Weeks and even months before holidays and family visits, most of the tickets were sold.
With no more plane seats available, Barranda would either travel from Manila by bus or car for 10-12 hours along the so-called “South Road” that’s nice on the view, but short on comfort.
The familiar lament is no longer heard now.
The ongoing fare promos are offering one-way plane tickets for as cheap as P1,500 all-in. The sooner one buys a ticket, the cheaper it is.
And seldom does it happen now that when one needs to leave for Manila as soon as possible, flights would be fully booked. No fear or hassle, for one can surely get a seat on the same day on any of the three airlines -- Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and PAL.
And for those who have the luxury of choice to travel either by land or air, the opportunity for relative flexibility in travel hours is a boon in this part of Luzon.
PAL’s daily early-morning flights to and from Legazpi and Manila are now balanced by the availability of afternoon flights of newcomer Cebu Pacific, which entered the field in August.
For Rosemarie Rey, president of the Albay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and who manages the operations of her businesses in Legazpi and in Manila, the convenience of being able to travel within the same day does a lot for productivity.
Recently, when the Inquirer interviewed her for a business story, Rey was in Manila in the morning. Before 3 p.m., she was back in Legazpi via Cebu Pacific -- and was entertaining visitors there by four.
In March, Air Philippines, which serviced the Legazpi-Manila, Legazpi-Cebu routes in previous years when it was still owned by the Gatchalian family, made a comeback.
“We received requests from the local government to add more flights, in addition to the once-a-day flight service of PAL,” relates Antonio Cua, Air Philippines manager in Legazpi.
On October 16, the Lucio Tan-owned airline adjusted its thrice-a-week mid-afternoon flights by flying daily on a midday schedule (plane leaves 10 a.m. Manila, reaching Legazpi 55 minutes later; plane leaves Legazpi at 11:25 a.m.).
Air Philippines works in complementary way with the flag carrier. Each can take bookings for one another -- making the air seats of Air Philippines a virtual add-on to those of PAL.
A total of more than 400 plane seats one-way are now available daily.
This came as Cebu Pacific’s Air Bus 310 added 150 seats to the two Boeing 737-200 planes of PAL and Air Philippines, which carry a combined passenger capacity of 286.
Just six months after Air Philippines’ comeback and one month after Cebu Pacific’s entry, total air passenger traffic -- which measures total departures and arrivals of passengers -- rose by 20 percent to 81,547 in January to August, from just 67,718 for the same period in 2005, according to statistics from the Air Transportation Office.
Air cargo movement has also gone up by 26 percent for the first eight months, compared to the same period in 2005.
By end-August this year, the Legazpi airport saw the movement (incoming and outgoing) of 620,372 kilograms of cargo so far -- just short by more than 100,000 kg of the total air cargo movement for 2005 when PAL was the lone airline.
Air Philippines already carried 17.6 percent of the total cargo as of August, or more than 100,000 kg.
There must to be something to the fare war-of-sorts going on. Virtually all three airlines are now offering the same pricing structure, starting at P1,400-P1,500 more or less -- with a ceiling of P3,000-plus for those who reserve late.
PAL, whose passenger load is down 60-69 percent from a previous 90 percent when it was the lone airline, has caught on the game.
“We guarantee the lowest fares (for as low as P1,572) on a five-day advance booking,” says Romeo Caraan, PAL branch manager.
Cebu Pacific, which caused a big ripple among travelers here when it announced “P99++” promo fares upon its entry in Bicol in August, plays it steady with its image of a low-fare airline.
Its 10-tier fare system, which starts at P1,437, all-in, aims to cater to all economic classes. “We would like to serve Bicolanos from all walks of life, if possible,” says Cebu Pacific-Legazpi station officer Albert Narvaez.
With regard to the fare promos of the three airlines indefinitely on, Cua says, “we are testing the purchasing power of the customers.”

^^Corrections: (1) Cebu Pacific deploys Airbus A319 to the MNL-LGP-MNL sector; besides, the airline's fleet is comprised of single-aisle A319's and A320's. I know of no airline in the Philippines that has A310, Airbus' smallest wide-body/twin aisle [could just be a typo as '0' is next to '9']. (2) Only Air Philippines has older Boeing 737-200's. PAL has three remaining B737-300's and one B737-400 and these will be phased out once the A319's and A320's PAL has on order start to get into service. Miss Peyra should exercise more care in handling facts... The mantra... Check and double check. Thanks to her, though, for her heartwarming report... and thanks, Mond, for posting... By the way... gurugeri October 26th, 2006, 12:32 PM Jerry... What Saturday is it? This Saturday, October 28, or on November 11?
Any Saturday. certainly, not this Saturday. My ma is still confined, although the doc said she was getting well--under observation, that is. I was thinking of Nov. 11. Maray ngani kung sa December na sana ta mega-bakasyon, except for Dex, ata.
Now the serious part... I hope even with the Johnny-come-lately, Lucky, Rex, Libro, Ibalon, and Prieto would survive, along with Expressions, and LCC's and Gaisano's school/office supplies.
I fervently hope NBS wouldn't obscure the small bookstores. Ganda nung pic na may chapel and Mayon! I love the contrast of colors. That was a magnificent shot!
Sure, I can bring the cam (it's not mine; it's the school's but since I am the paper adviser, sakin yun naka-entrust).
Anyway, reading through some posts, I feel something bad. >( But this will pass.

You flatter me because you know lots of Bicol places. By the way, I once taught in Laguna, and we had a couple of outings in your province. I love Quezon--and I like your bus terminal in Lucena. How I wish Legazpi could have its own pleasant-looking bus terminal. Wala kasing site eh.
Legazpi peeps, have it occurred to you that we've got no more area for expansion? North of the city proper is Mayon, south naman mga bundok, east is the Albay Gulf, and west is my pulsating hometown :cheers2: . Southbound is the only choice.

We Legazpeeps will gladly unfurl the red carpet for you...:):):)
We now have two forumers who might take the side trip to these parts... Doc and Lili... and with LCC's Tiger and CebuPac, Oli might come home more often...

Matteo October 27th, 2006, 07:52 AM Hotel operators in expansion mode
HSAI Raintree discovers and ties up with Misibis Realty
10/26/2006
HOTEL OPERATORS are aggressively expanding their operations in the Philippines as they continue to be upbeat on the growth of tourism in the country, experts said during a Good News Kapihan at the M Cafe in Makati yesterday.
HSAI Raintree, operator of Discovery Hotels in the country, is teaming up with property developer MISIBIS Realty group to put up hotels and entertainment centers in the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon.
Misibis Realty will be the developer while Raintree will be in charge of the operations and management of the hotels.
"Bicol has a lot to offer". There are airports and roads and it has a rich historical heritage but it lacks five-star tourist facilitates," HSAI Raintree president Annabella Wisniewski said.
She said Misibis Realty would develop an island resort with a five-star hotel in Barangay Misibis north of Albay province.
The first phase of the project, which will open by 2008, covers a 48-hectare property that will house 40 villas, a 75-room resort hotel, a spa village and swimming pool.
In five to six years, the island resort will expand to 200-400 ha.
The partners are also planning a small resort hotel on a 4-hectare lot in Donsol, Sorsogon province.
In the meantime, the Discovery Hotel Group is set to launch "Discovery Shores," a five-star hotel in Boracay in February.
Boracay chamber of Commerce president Charlie Uy said tourists arrivals in Boracay wre expected to grow to 800,000this year from 500,000 last year.

@bonixx, if I would've enough money, I'll put a house on the Calauag, Quezon - Sta. Elena, Camarines Norte border. I want to experience living in a neighborhood of mixed Tagalog and Bicol folk. Besides, my cousins live just a few kilometers away... ;)
@everyone especially Lill, I'm pretty fluttered because that pretty chapel is where I used to go during religious activities in high school. I can't imagine how a small chapel is being admired by many now. In fact, its interiors and surroundings look more beautiful if you get to visit there... ;)
@everybody else, have a good day today. Looks like, the sun's shining on us now!

LEGAZPI CITY—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has lowered the alert level of Mayon volcano from two to one. The Phivolcs, however, continued to warn against entry into the 7-km extended danger zone and the 6-km permanent danger zone around Mayon. It also warned against straying into rivers and areas that are lahar-prone. It said Mayon was heading for normalcy since the last monitoring on Oct. 3. The alert level was lowered as a 4.1 magnitude earthquake shook Masbate and Sorsogon on Thursday. Joanna Los Baños, Inquirer Southern Luzon

There are parts of the city proper which need sufficient lighting. Has anyone ever passed through Ramon Santos, Elizondo, Aguinaldo Streets in the city proper? Feeling ko kasi madilim dun.
I rode Rawis-Daraga A jeep from Legazpi last night. Pag daan ng Imelda Park, medyo nainis ako kasi ganda nung lights (parang yung sa Rizal Street), pero wala namang tao. I honestly think it was such a waste of money. That "sparsely" peopled park needs a complete makeover so it would lure visitors.

i think the problem is a proper distribution of lights around the city streets.
i dont think lights can cause wasting money of our local government the enough reason is for safety and to attract some tourist.

I've always notice this sight when I'm in the plane, and I just feel like Legazpi is really blessed with so many possible tourist attraction.
You know what we really lack, it's just publicity and a good Five Star Resort. I think we have the potential to get more tourist than Bohol or Cebu, or any other place in the country.:)
wow  where exactly is this Yves?! I've never seen it before....I agree it would be great if we had our own version of the Chocolate Hills in addition to Mayon. And you're right about the need for more publicity. Someone posted an article earlier on about a local entrepreneur who had the foresight to distribute flyers and brochures around Manila on the Mayon eruption. If one person is capable of generating such publicity and tourist revenue can you imagine how much we can all achieve with some collective effort?

There's not much development sa South kang Legazpi because there's only one subsequent town and that is Manito. After Manito, wala na... But if the road directly linking Legazpi and Sorsogon cities w/out having to pass thruogh Daraga is developed and considered as part of the nat'l highway, I think the Southern portions of Legazpi will boost.
However, the present Legazpi-Sorsogon road is full of uncertainties. Travelers aren't sure whether this road is free of pestering NPAs...

Mond87 November 2nd, 2006, 09:45 AM Town dreams of riches in pearl farms
First posted 01:01am (Mla time) Nov 02, 2006
By Bobby Labalan
Inquirer
Editor's Note: Published on Page A15 of the November 2, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer
DAVAO and Palawan will soon face a stiff competitor in pearl production once a pearl farm started four years ago in Castilla town, 25 kilometers from Sorsogon City, goes on full operation.
Castilla Mayor Renato Laurenaria said the municipality had forged a memorandum of agreement with the Bicol University for the implementation of a more thorough and scientific study and implementation of pearl farming, which, he hoped, would generate more income for its people.
As part of the agreement, the BU Research and Development Center would be established in Barangay Cogon.
“If other provinces can, certainly we can do it also here,” Laurenaria had said in pushing for the establishment of the pearl farm in the village before the municipal council.
The mayor said that after the 2001 elections, he learned that Davao and Palawan pearl farm operators were sourcing out their oysters, locally known as “pisay,” from his town.
“Why allow the raw materials to be taken out from our seas when we can also study pearl farming and give our people additional income?” he challenged the shell gatherers who supplied the bivalve mollusks to the other provinces.
Castilla is a third-class municipality (average annual income: P21 million-P27 million) with a population of about 49,000 and a land area of 18,000 hectares.
Good quality
Ronel Dioneda, a marine biologist and head of the research center, said the oysters that abound in Cogon were of good quality and very ideal for pearl production.
According to him, two kinds of pearl oysters are found in the municipal waters, which are part of the Sorsogon Bay: The white-lipped (Pinctada maxima) and black-lipped (Pinctada margaritifera). “The former is better than the latter in terms of production,” Dioneda said.
Before the local scientists came in about a year ago, he said, the oyster farming practice was more of a hit-and-miss. The farmers had adopted the technique from past dealings with pearl farmers from Davao and Palawan.
But with the signing of the MOA, Dioneda and his team are introducing scientific methods to maximize production.
The marine biologist stressed that one good thing about the industry was that it was sea-based, which would compel the community to keep their seas safe from illegal fishing activities, like dynamite and cyanide fishing.
Initially, the BU team identified five barangays—Buenavista, Macalaya, Tomalaytay, Quirapi and Cogon—where farms could be safely established. One farm is already operational in Cogon.
‘Irritating’ oysters
Pearl production starts with the introduction of a foreign object, called an “irritant,” into the oyster, Dioneda explained. The oyster instinctively protects itself by expelling the object or, in most instances, by coating the foreign object with calcium carbonate or nacre.
Nacre is secreted by the epithelial cells of the mantle tissue of certain species of mollusk. It is continually deposited on the inner surface of the shell (the iridescent nacreous layer commonly known as the “mother of pearl”), both as a means to smooth the shell itself and as a defense against parasitic organisms.
Another farming method, Dioneda explained, was the implantation of a small oyster tissue in the gonad of the oyster which will induce secretion of nacre to cover the mantle and the implant. This method produces the best quality pearl, he said.
A good quality pearl is produced in 18-24 months and determined by the thickness of the nacre, the scientist said. Since it takes time to produce pearls, he said, the center would adopt the modular system to ensure production at least every month.
Each oyster is good for two productions of high quality pearls and has a life span of up to four years.
The BU team has already started research on the mass production of oysters to ensure continuous supply of stocks for long-term production. It had earlier conducted stock assessment and spat collection, Dioneda said.
All the information as well as the technology would be turned over to the local government and the community, as agreed upon.
Potential
Cogon barangay chief Manuel Pareja, a local pioneer in pearl production, said he saw good potential for the industry in Castilla.
He had been supplying pearl oysters to the Davao and Palawan farms for almost 20 years, until Laurenaria urged him to go into farming himself.
Pareja supported his children’s education through college by selling oysters to the farms. He buys live oysters at P140 per kilo. Some oysters weigh as much as two kilos each.
Divers get the shells from depths of up to 40 meters and the stocks had to be acclimatized to the shallow area, Pareja said.
At present, Cogon has more than 800 oysters; the produce are sold to jewelry makers in Manila.
Mayor Laurenaria explained that aside from the pearls, the community could derive other income from related industries like shell decor making, farm souvenirs, oyster meat production and ecotourism.
During the recent visit to Sorsogon of US Ambassador Kristie Kenney and Sen. Richard Gordon, Laurenaria gifted each of them with a souvenir oyster shell with a pearl implant made by the local community.
The BU team is expected to complete its research work by yearend and pearl farm production and expansion could go full blast by next year, he said.
“We need to have more income-generating programs for our people, lest they fall victim to the sweet nothings of the New People’s Army,” Laurenaria said. He is the only local official in the province who has declared an all-out war against the communist NPA.

I heard it too pero I don't think it's a mere rumor. Pinalabas kasi sa news! Daraga really needs to be a city. Last year alone, its LGU generated a total income of 109 Million Php, the highest among towns in the whole Bicol region.
Pero kung ako aaputon, mas gusto kong maging parte na lang ki Legazpi ang Daraga coz the latter would boost Legazpi's total income by about 33% overall. Furthermore, the former would then be considered as a highly-urbanized city. Sobrang-lapit naman tlga kasi ang Daraga! In fact, kung may time sana ako, lalakawon ko sana ang pagpa-Legazpi...

I wish I had a car. I would go touring the region in a day or two and take shots of these places--especially Sorsogon City (of course, first love ko pa rin ang Legazpi).
hey, whatever happened to Daraga town's application for cityhood?
tuloy ba yan or rumor lang?
Ewan ko lang. I am not sure about my town becoming a city. Ok na rin sakin na ganon lang. At least yung buwis di ganon kataas. What I want Daraga-LGU to solve is the problem on traffic, garbage, and overcrowding. Centralized masyado ang progress--again because wala nang space. I don't think our ancestors did a very good planning on establishing town centers in places situated between huge landforms. Upper Daraga, mula Penafrancia hanggang Villahermosa is a good alternative--of course, I am not wishing that Mayon's fury would reach our bustling town proper (as it did reach Cagsaua in 1814).
But, as per Mond87's word, Daraga had the highest income among all towns--I suppose it could have surpassed Sorsogon City's if it were not a city yet (I stand corrected on this concern). If that's the case, pwede na rin ba talaga maging city ang Daraga?
Mond87, Daraga, I think, was twice combined with Legazpi but the merging didn't work. One clear factor--although this is a weak argument--is the dialect spoken. You cross Sagpon Bridge, iba na ang salita. Besides, I don't think Daraguenos would buy the idea, call it pride.
Ay! Halabaun na an post ko. ^^
bonixx November 3rd, 2006, 01:37 PM Daraga is actually qualified in application for cityhood based on 20 million Local generated income category but the standard qualification is about 100 million to become a city and now only 15 municipality has been and no one in bicol region even daet is not qualified well if Daraga have its exemption i think it will become a city soon.
[dx] November 4th, 2006, 02:17 AM Anyway, what were the new stores that were added in that mall?

So far Nat'l Book Store is still the only store at the expansion but they're already working on the other stores adjacent to National. I don't know about the upper two levels though, I haven't been there yet. But Max's is set to open a franchise here. One of my colleagues was hired to be part of the management team of that resto, kaya yun, resigned. Anyways, kung chicken man sana, Banjo's Chicken Inato (on Lapu-lapu St.) na ako kesa sa Max's, mas barato pa

Provincial games big hit for PBA
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson
The Philippine Star 11/01/2006
Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala said yesterday it’s no surprise that the league’s provincial games are drawing huge crowds and promised more out-of-town contests to bring the action closer to fans all over the country.
So far this conference, the PBA has produced sellouts in five of six games outside of Metro Manila, including the Guam contest between Red Bull and Alaska last Sept. 28. Ticket sales of about P1 million are now the standard, said PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial.
Sellouts were registered in Guam, Dumaguete in Negros Oriental, San Fernando in La Union, Cabagan in Isabela and Subic Bay in Olongapo City, Zambales.
In the last Philippine Cup, the PBA scheduled one foreign game in Hong Kong and seven provincial games, including Roxas City in Capiz, Cebu City and Davao City. This conference, six more out-of-town outings are set to bring the total to one foreign outing in Guam and 11 provincial games.
Marcial said the enthusiastic reception is due to the competitive balance in the league, the attraction of popular stars and the re-emergence of the PBA as the country’s No. 1 sports entertainment vehicle.
The coming out-of-town games are Welcoat vs Talk ‘N Text in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, on Nov. 9, Red Bull vs Air21 in Legazpi City on Nov. 11, Barangay Ginebra versus Sta. Lucia in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, on Nov. 18, Red Bull vs Talk ‘N Text in Tacloban City on Nov. 30, Alaska vs San Miguel Beer in General Santos City on Dec. 2 and a doubleheader, featuring San Miguel Beer vs Coca-Cola and Alaska vs Barangay Ginebra in Lucena City, Quezon, on Dec. 9.
"Wherever it’s a sellout, you can be sure the PBA will be back there," said Marcial. "That’s why we’re going back to Tubod and that’s why we went back to San Fernando, La Union. The fans are eager to watch PBA games. They’re excited to see rookies like Kelly Williams and Arwind Santos and their favorite veterans like James Yap, Danny Seigle and Mark Caguioa."
Aside from more out-of-town trips, the PBA has scheduled several games in Metro Manila venues to reach out to new markets. Araneta Coliseum remains the mainstay in Metro Manila with 27 playing days at the Big Dome. Cuneta Astrodome is hosting five playing days, Ynares Center in Antipolo four, the San Juan Arena two and Olivarez Gym in Paranaque one.
Marcial said the PBA plans to stage an unprecedented two-city hosting of the 2006-07 All-Star Weekend in San Fernando, La Union, and Baguio City in April next year. It’s the North’s turn to host the annual event after Cagayan de Oro last season.
"We could hold the All-Star Game in Baguio City and the Rookie Challenge in San Fernando or vice-versa," said Marcial. "We’re sure of two sellouts."
Marcial said tickets for provincial games range from a low of P100 to a high of P1,400.
"Tickets are sold at popular prices," he continued. "The highest priced ticket ever was P1,400 in General Santos City. In San Fernando, La Union, the top ticket sold for P1,000. Most top tickets range in price from P500 to P800."
Marcial said an overflow crowd witnessed the Subic game between San Miguel Beer and Air21 last Saturday.
"The gym capacity was only 3,500 and it was the PBA’s first official regular season game in Subic," said Marcial. "The fans cheered every shot that was made. We had to turn away hundreds outside because there were no tickets left to be sold. Subic fans really have a passion for the game."
Team owners are also showing interest in attending out-of-town games. San Miguel Corp. chairman Eduardo Cojuangco watched the Subic game while Sta. Lucia Realty owner Excy Robles witnessed the San Fernando, La Union, contest between the Realtors and Purefoods.
In Dumaguete, Rep. Emilio Macias, Negros Oriental Gov. George Arnaiz and former Sen. John Osmena were in the stands with 5,000 fans for the Purefoods-Ginebra contest. La Union Gov. Victor Ortega and San Fernando City Mayor Mary Jane Ortega joined 4,000 fans to watch the Purefoods-Sta. Lucia game. Cabagan, Isabela Mayor Christopher Mamaoang saw the game between Ginebra and Coca-Cola with 4,700 fans.
Marcial said he expects more sellouts in the six remaining provincial playdays.
"We postponed our game in Legazpi two years ago because of the Mayon volcano eruption so you can imagine how eager the fans are to watch the Nov. 11 game," said Marcial. "Legazpi Mayor Rosal is making sure everything is arranged for the game at the Astrodome. In Tacloban, the PBA will be inaugurating the new Romualdez stadium and General Santos City Mayor (Pedro) Acharon is preparing a big welcome with Manny Pacquiao who will be back from Las Vegas by then."
Lucena will host a rare provincial doubleheader and Marcial said the Dec. 9 twinbill will likely set a record attendance for an out-of-town event because the games — San Miguel Beer vs Coca-Cola and Barangay Ginebra vs Alaska — feature popular teams.

^bonixx! Good for your city! doubleheader? Wow! Legazpi was host to PBA, alternating between our two airconditioned gyms Astrodome and ICR, but I still have to see us host a doubleheader!
BTW, way way back, Daraga had an "aborted" game in the BC Gym because some wise guy "waxed" the hardcourt the players kept on slippin,' this my brother told me, heheh... The fans booed the players who walked out...

^I don't buy Marcial's alibi... There never was an eruption in 2004!

thanks for the info. utol Mon, This is the third time Lucena Will host a double header on PBA Games, yes i think it would break the records Because Quezon Convention Center Have a Capacity of 10,000 seats, but it is until under renovation due to typhoon Milenyo. other Venue here is a 4,000 seater Enverga Gymnasium catered several PBA Games way back 1990's. Impressive for Legazpi City and now rejoining on regular sched of PBA.^^

BYAHILO November 4th, 2006, 10:12 PM hello there,
its my first time here sa thread na ito. biglang pumasok lng kagabi sa mind ko parang gusto ko ko mag legazpi this november or early december.
my question is: may murang accomodation ba jan (ill be on a backpacking trip)
ano mga places sa legazpi na good for photoshoot?
how far is cagsawa from legaspi?
what is the standard mode of transpo there?
ill just be staying there for a night.
kaya dapat super siksik ang sked
sana may mga taga SSC jan na ma-meet ko. regards!!
Monsi November 5th, 2006, 01:00 AM Ei, Eric. Thank heavens for that impulse to visit Legazpi, heheh.
Are you arriving by Cebu Pacific (5J-327) and fly the next day (5J-328)?
suggested itinerary:
afternoon/evening
2:20 ETA at Legazpi airport (5J-327)
3:00 check in hotel/lodge
3:30 walking tour of downtown port district/boulevard/pier
4:30 massage at Pacific Mall
5:30 Lignon Hill till dusk
6:30 health break
7:00 dinner
9:00 it's all up to you
morning/afternoon next day
6:00 coffee/doughnut
6:30 Daraga Church (minimum jeepney fare)
7:00 Cagsawa Ruins (minimum fare if you proceed from Daraga; a little bit more than minimum fare from Legazpi)
9:00 Tabaco City, Tabaco Church (approx. 27 kilometers from Legazpi)
10:00 brunch
11:00 Tiwi, halo-halo at DJC (about five to eight km from Tabaco)
12:30 back to Legazpi, check out hotel/lodge
1:30 check in at the airport
2:50 ETD for Manila (5J-328)
If time's tight, you can drop Tiwi and try DJC at Landco back in Legazpi, instead.
^I just modified a Dex original itinerary for Tigs.
If you're coming here by bus, I hope you arrive way before six a.m., because buses are allowed to pass through Rizal Street before six. If that's the case, you can tell the driver to drop you off at BPI Albay rear side of Albay Cathedral, then check in at Lita's Lodging House a few steps away, no sweat!
But if you arrive after six... The bus will be diverted... You must leave Cubao the earliest possible time, say 5:00 p.m., but it also depends upon the kind of bus you take, what with the sorry state of Andaya Highway in Camarines Sur. Then we'll have to rework your itinerary...
Mode of transpo: Jeepney--Most places of interest are within, more or less, the radius covered by minimum fare (about 4-5 kilometers). Let's say you're based at Lita's (budget accommodations, you said) and you're going to Cagsawa Ruins, look for one with Legazpi-Malabog emblazoned on its sides. Tell the driver to drop you off the access road to Cagsawa, that would be around 200 meters from the highway. For Tabaco or Tiwi, we have FX terminal close to the bus terminal.
One or two, or more of us locals might be available but it would be difficult if not impossible during the workweek. Saturday afternoons and Sundays are usually free, I hope; and November 30, Thursday, and December 8, Friday.
You can choose your accommodations here:

Transportation: (click transportation)

^ correction: Air Philippines now flies to/from Manila daily, ETD Manila 10:00, ETA Legazpi 10:55. http://www.airphils.com/flightschedules.asp
Destinations:
http://tourism.albay.gov.ph/destinationpage.html
Dagos tabi kamo...
Monsi November 5th, 2006, 02:09 AM ^^Of course... you could also try Hawayano's clan's Hotel Rex or what used to be Waway's [Davao] grandma's Hotel Ritz now Magayon Hotel, where Tigs stayed October 12/13. See dem pictures here: Thread Six, posts 493 and 495:http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=334591&page=25
They are accessible but not exactly backpackers/budget.
Take it easy, Eric.

Mond87 November 7th, 2006, 04:58 AM A joke my friend told me:
Guy 1: Boy, sisay ang mayor kang Legazpi?
Guy 2: Si Noel Rosal...
Guy 1: Tanga, sa Albay yan...
Guy 2: P*** ka, parehas man sana yan! :bash: :bash: :bash:
Back then, Albay and Legazpi are two separate towns. Now it is funny to take note that Legazpi city's hall is located in Albay rather than in centro Legazpi. Heheh...
Mond87 November 7th, 2006, 05:05 AM Enjoy your stay here in Legazpi, pex and eric!!!

Hi Nikki! Ako na lang ang bibisita sau... Kelan ba? :)
Mond87 November 7th, 2006, 05:09 AM Daraga is actually qualified in application for cityhood based on 20 million Local generated income category but the standard qualification is about 100 million to become a city and now only 15 municipality has been and no one in bicol region even daet is not qualified well if Daraga have its exemption i think it will become a city soon.
Daraga's total income for 2005 is 109 million. How is it not qualified? I might be missing some details... :)

gurugeri November 7th, 2006, 09:33 AM This intesection badly needs traffic lights. This has become one of the busiest intersections of the city. Just a slice of the money used for those rather expensive lights on Quezon Avenue could have benefitted this part of the city, and of course, motorists, who are--some of them--incessantly undisciplined. What do you guys think?

Yeah, it would be great to meet any fellow travellers!:)
A side question: how many traffic lights does Legazpi have now? It looks like we need lots more.

She works at the city hall. Perhaps she can spread a word about it... Wejeje...
Mond87 November 8th, 2006, 03:19 AM It's good to hear that you guys are concerned about Legazpi's traffic but as of my observations, it looks like the traffic here is much better than in Daraga and Naga... What we really need is a much better bus terminal than we have right now...

Yes, Daraga will get a really low grade on traffic management. But, as I have always emphasized, there is just no place downtown or near it for an alternative route going to Legazpi. If plans to convert the Daraga portion of the rails (starting at Banag) into an alternative road, then problems on traffic in this bustling (I am overusing this word) town will be lessened.

And of course, authorities who are not only visible in such areas but are also consistent in implementing policies on traffic. I took that picture at about 5PM on Saturday and I was cringing in disappointment because the traffic aides were far from being visible. Hmp!

Yes, dalawa talaga yun. Sa Penaranda and Rizal Streets meron. I was thinking kung working pa rin yung traffic light dun sa Penaranda and Ramons Santos Street. Di ko masyadong napapansin.
Another traffic light or traffic aide na rin lang dun sa intersection ng Penaranda Extension and Lakandula Drive.
pexgarcia November 8th, 2006, 07:56 AM thats right! the other traffic light in legazpi is penaranda and the street going towards Roselle Theatres...Formerly JOYA AND PRECIOSA (named after 2 grand daughters of Dona Pepita)....:) By the way....anyone knows Bitoy Roces??.....ka tropa ko xa at classmate ko sa divine word high schoo back in the daysl...Im wondering how he's doing now adays!....if anybody knows him...tell him i said HI!....:)

Mond87 November 9th, 2006, 03:39 AM I wish I had a car. I would go touring the region in a day or two and take shots of these places--especially Sorsogon City (of course, first love ko pa rin ang Legazpi).
I think pwede nang maging city ang Daraga when it comes to total income. Pero pagdating sa lawak ng ating CBD, hindi pa ata... heheh... No, I don't think we have higher income than Sorsogon kung ciudad na tau:
Sorsogon - 267 million php
Daraga - 109 million php

jjpaul_c November 12th, 2006, 01:16 AM Maray na bangi o Umaga Monsi! Great pics! Im new here, but i grew up in Legazpi. Its been a while since I left Legazpi. Most of my family lives in New Jersey now. Im amaze on how much Legazpi has evolved (naturally of course). My family are actually from Tiwi. But we had a house in sagpon because both my parents teached at BU and I went to St Jude Catholic School. In short I've seen some of your past thread pictures and they are great. On the nearfuture see if you can pass by my old school and take a few. Would apreciate it very much. Thanks

I don't know if it's right to say this, pero napapangitan ako sa ICR. Another thing, ang pangit ng surroundings, hindi sya presentable, kaya nga konting functions lang ginagawa dun. The Astrodome--though quite smaller--is very accessible, well-ventilated, and properly maintained. I hope the City Government does something about what seems to be neglected.
gurugeri November 12th, 2006, 08:47 AM Oh by the way, natuloy ba yung mini-meet? I coudn't leave because I had to be with my press conference student-contestants for two days at Pili National High School.

I also think so, Sir Jerry. The last time I went there, which was two years ago, hindi cemented ang labas ng ICR. Tapos mainit sa loob. Kaya it really is better that the PBA was held in AA. ;)
@Monsi: Great photos! :okay: According to your photos, halos magkasinglaki pala ang AA and ang UNC Sports Palace.

Lili November 14th, 2006, 01:21 AM ^^ I just found out that Loida Nicolas Lewis, the Filipino-American CEO of the TLC Group and TLC Beatrice International Holdings, a multi-million global food conglomeration is an alumna of St. Agnes. She is an attorney and very well-known as one of the most successful Filipino Americans in New York. She is also well-known for her philantrophy. Her family was originally based in Sorsogon.

Ah Loida Lewis. She was featured in ABS-CBNs Nagmamahal, Kapamilya. And yes, she was originally from Sorsogon, she built a school in Sorsogon City (Lewis Academy, I think), and she has a processing plant for the TLC group here in Naga City. So she was an alumna of SAA. Galing. :okay:

Doc – at least you can add that uniform to fame of St. Agnes. He he he we wore khaki pants, white shirt and girls wore same color with skirts. No suspenders and straps. Identical to the other Chinese school in downtown Legazpi. I remember the agnesians would make fun of our school bus. It was a big white bus with chicken wire fence on the windows. So every time our bus passes by your school, the agnesians would yell the cock crowing “cock-a-doodle-doo". Of course we would retaliate by yelling “pinangat”!

Dx – I guess we all know when one of our own is famous. The world is getting smaller for bicolanos. Indeed Loida Nicolas is well known here in Northeast. In fact she has a colum in several newspaper. My sister told me she was a key speaker in several ocassion and re-unions at St Agness. Plus she donated millions of pesos to St Agnes. Speaking of Dina Bonnevie, her younger sister went to St. Agnes too was classmate of my sister.

Thanks! Got a full eye ball on the site. Large pics are fine, not a probs. I feel bad dragging you guys to an old topic…..Buhay pa palan ang Mercury Drugs Store. Tanchuling is now a hotel? Converted from a small hospital or a new one? He delivered me and all my siblings. I heard he acquired a property at Misibis. And Mayon Imperial Hotel, that use to be the number one hotel in Legazpi. The new ones must make it look old now. St Jude and St Rafael Churches, that’s where I had my confirmation and first communion. Looking at legazpi now doesn’t surprised me that all the theater I know are gone. I wonder if that Indian (bumbay, Satis?) store in front of Rex is still there or relocated somewhere. Sikat sakuya yan noon, gulping kawatan. We heard about the Clutario Halo-halo too, from Tiwi yata yan. Yeah those electric and cable wires poles sucks. Some of them look like overloaded with wires and about to fall. That’s a problem here too. Especially on the hurricane area, even here in the northeast, we get big storm once in a while. Underground cables are limited to big cities. Asked doc for his input, they have underground cable. And they get heavy rain as we do in the Phil. But then, they do have higher standard of living in that part of the world. How are the Chinese community? Tell us about the nightlife in Legazpi.
jjpaul_c November 15th, 2006, 12:24 AM Khaki palan ang sa St. Jude, lingaw ko na..I think nagbago na sinda uniform? hahaha..pinangat, i remember the rivalry pag may CEAL Meets. magkaralaban ang SAA, St. Jude, St. Raphael tsaka Aquinas University HS.
Dx - CEAL meets? I’m not sure what u mean. Refresh me. If you mean academic contest, I know St Jude had a lot to offer. When it comes to games and sports, our team from what I remember was always competitive, if not better. Even though, I hate to admit, our school had a lot of wimps and nerds (excluding me).

jjpaul_c November 15th, 2006, 12:26 AM Doc – Count me in for that meet. Me and my wife have discussed of finally visiting Legazpi City. We haven’t finalized it yet, but our target date are Feb or March. Even my kids are excited of seeing where their dad came from. My wife is also a native of libon, Bicol. kevinb November 15th, 2006, 08:46 AM Nag-division pa lang kami sa Pili National High School. Next month yung regional sa Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School (MORMS) in Guinobatan, Albay. We hope to qualify for the nationals in Baguio in February. Weeee!
Ayos! Good luck sa students mo Sir Jerry. :okay:
BTW: May I reintroduce you to the original mainstays, of these threads: Oli based in Singapore; Doc in London, and Matt in Las Vegas, Legazpeños all, and locally based, we have Dex. You must have "met" the rest already--Jerry teaches in Philippine Science High School in Goa, Mond is enrolled in BU, Yves' has his own blog (http://www.dphotography.org/gallery/), Kevin, in UPLB, who else... Pex's in California, Tigs in Chicago (he visited Legazpi October 12/13), Lili in New York... Bonnix's from Lucena, and Eric from Bacolod...
Ei, guys, if any of you's been left out, just introduce yourself... heheh.
Oi yaon pa ako sa Naga. Atsan pa akong banggi mahali paduman. Hehe.
Mick3y November 15th, 2006, 02:45 PM Hi guys!!!This is my first time here, but i've been viewing different Bicol threads every now and then for over six months now... :)
Mick3y November 15th, 2006, 03:01 PM Dx - CEAL meets? I’m not sure what u mean. Refresh me. If you mean academic contest, I know St Jude had a lot to offer. When it comes to games and sports, our team from what I remember was always competitive, if not better. Even though, I hate to admit, our school had a lot of wimps and nerds (excluding me).
To me, CEAL is famillar because some of my friends were in it, they had some leadership training of some sort... But, i'm really famillar with the BACS meet (Bicol Association of Catholic Schools) and they say that each and every year (daw) S.A.A. always wins:banana: . The tough competition here :bash: (daw) was between the Agnesians (SAA) and the Collegialas (USI). This is what gave SAA the prestige and glory that made it special and known. Btw, last year the BACS meet was held at Divine Word HS gymnasium and i think SAA did win. Btw, i'm an agnesian, hehe... :)

Ei there Mick3y! Welcome! This is great - new members coming up all the time. :cheers1: BTW, mick3y, you're the fifth Agnesian in this thread. haha. anyway, let us not overemphasize that. So, once again, welcome! :grouphug:
CEAL is the Catholic Educational Association of Legazpi. Its part of the larger CEAP (http://www.ceap.org.ph/) or the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines - an association of 1,192 Catholic educational institutions across the country.

A "different" view of an iconic Bicol landmark - the ruins of the Cagsawa belfry. I wonder what's going on with the conservation effort for Cagsawa. A few months ago it was reported that the ruins of the belfry was in danger of collapsing.

[dx] November 16th, 2006, 11:19 AM Doc – Count me in for that meet. Me and my wife have discussed of finally visiting Legazpi City. We haven’t finalized it yet, but our target date are Feb or March. Even my kids are excited of seeing where their dad came from. My wife is also a native of libon, Bicol. But grew up in Manila and US. Doesn’t speak our dialect.
That's great! Uruli na kamo gabos, ang Legazpi naghahalat lang saindo. :) :grouphug:

Actually, Miag-ao and Daraga churches stylistically share "an individualistic, naïf but extremely delightful application of highly exaggerated baroque elements: solomonic columns, undulating cornices, flattened bas-reliefs of saints."

Sir Jerry, teacher ka palan. I better watch my language then.
Micky – Welcome! We’re both new kids on the block. (I ain’t no kid though) And onother agnessian on our midst. I guess if we can’t beat ya. We’re just gonna have to join ya. St Agnes is a huge school compared to the rest of catholic school in Legazpi. Which figures the domination in this ‘CEAL’ meets. Hey fellas, correct me if I’m wrong, just telling from what I remember.

gurugeri November 17th, 2006, 10:03 AM Ei, guys! What's up with all of you? I've been quite busy lately--school paper work. We're releasing the first issue before December. Mapagalun!
Sir Jerry, teacher ka palan. I better watch my language then.
Yes, and I was supposed to teach at St. Agnes when I came back to Bicol (I taught six years in Manila), but I preferred my present school to St. Agnes. Hehe!, Anyway, what's with being a teacher? I am here not to copyread anyone else's posts, so long as there's no foul and offensive language. Monsi is a prof, too.
I love the pics, Dex. It feels different to see my hometown's church--truly one of the most beautiful churches in the country.
gurugeri November 17th, 2006, 10:15 AM Sir Jerry palan ang apod saimo. Maray man gulpi pa din ang mga sinehan. I see there is a lot of fast food too. How about some decent and elegant restaurant? Gusto kong ipailing digdi sa mga kano ang pighalian ko
Sorry, this had to come earlier. I didn't know you had quoted my post. Iyo dakul man giraray an mga sinehan kaso gari dai nman maray pigtatao ta mas magayon kung a harong na lang. Pirated video cds and dvds proliferate everywhere.
As for decent and elegant restos, the home-based can help you out. I have practically been away from Albay since 1997 pero syempre nakakauwi ako when I like lalo na sa Cam Sur na lang ako nagwo-work. Even then, di rin ako mahilig kumain sa labas. Mahirap lang ako. Hahaha! Pero, Dex and Monsi can help you on that concern.
Agnesian ka palan? When I was in high school, I thought of your like as arrogant. But when I taught at Colegio San Agustin in Binan, I realized that Catholic school students are not arrogant. They're just a bunch of confident people.
gurugeri November 17th, 2006, 10:30 AM Help! As in help! Our school paper is publishing a feature on the proposed Southern Luzon International Airport in Daraga. I was wondering if you guys have any pics of the site. I just need it so badly and am hoping to receive your "donation" on Monday since I'm bringing everything to the printing press on Tuesday. Please send it to gurugeri@yahoo.com. Don't worry, the picture-taker shall be highly credited. Thanks so much!

Mick3y November 17th, 2006, 02:46 PM ^^ Ei there, our Intrams was just Tuesday to Thursday. Unfortunately, because of the Milo marathon the thursday intrams was postponed to Friday. Just a while ago (friday), some alumni came for an exhibition match with the SAA varsity and some alumni came, too. Maybe one of you guys came... btw the alumni b-ball team won by few pts. And our team (there wer four teams) was the over-all first runner-up. I was also first runner-up for my sport...
I would like to advertise our family business if i may...
Xandra Hotel - Penaranda st. Legazpi City, greaqt for all backpackers out there. It is of walking distance to 3 malls, 6 cinemas, 3 schools, 1 Church, 3 educational supplies, 2 parks, 2 transpo terminals (train and sea) over a hundred stores... Accomodation is very very affordable
We once interviewed a backpacker tiourist from Finland and said that it was really the most ideal place to stay for backpackers, he just walked to an express mart (only about 6 meters away) and bought a loaf of sliced bread and a bottle of peanutbutter for his breakfast. It is located smack right in the middle of the city's bussiest area and the bicol regions most expensive square kilometer. So, san' ka pa? HOTEL XANDRA... (named after my mom)
Matteo November 17th, 2006, 03:15 PM thanks Monsi :D nice photos, as usual :okay:

sorry for the delayed response due to the power surges here in Legaspi that started when Milenyo hit the city...
Btw, Xandra hotel is just beside Lucky Educational Supply in Legazpi city along Penaranda street. In front of Saty's Dep't store, so if you know any tourist who will visit the city, you may recommend Hotel Xandra...

They were there because i saw them and liked them:) ... that's why my signature says pics found on the internet (w/c is broad). I've been viewing different Legaspi threads for months and found these pics and placed them on my little website for my faraway relatives to see it... Would Monsi be mad???

upload the photos in photobucket.com/imageshack.com, w/c ever, then copy and paste here the URL. make sure to put [IMG*] and [/IMG*] before and after the URL. anyway, disregard the (*), i included that, else, the [IMG*] wont appear.. [dx] November 19th, 2006, 07:55 AM The CITY of LEGAZPI
The Queen City of Southern Luzon

Welcome to Thread number 8!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/dxpsycho/168.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/dxpsycho/Beautiful20City21.jpg
The City of Legazpi is the business hub not only of the Province of Albay but also of the whole Bicol Region. It is regarded as the heart of Mayon and a friendly venue of conventions.
The City of Legazpi is situated on the eastern portion of Albay Province approximately 534 kms. south of Metro Manila and centrally located in the Bicol Region. It lies approximately 123 44' longitude (east) and 130 08’ latitude (north). On the north, it is bounded by the Municipality of Sto. Domingo, on the west by the Municipality of Daraga, on the south by the Municipalities of Manito, Albay, Pilar and Castilla, Sorsogon, and on the east by the Albay Gulf and Poliqui Bay.
Measured from north to south, at the outermost tip, Legazpi City spans approximately 29 kilometers; and from east to west, the smallest width is about 3 kilometers (urban area), while the widest area spans about 15 kilometers (southeast area). Positioned in the geographical center of the peninsula and the between the two island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, Legazpi has the strategic advantage of being a commercial, institutional, and transportation hub. Legazpi City is the southernmost terminus of the Philippine National Railways Main Line South. It also services sea-going vessels through its port.
