I'm glad to know all our Legazpi forumers are safe. Welcome back Monsi and Mond!
It's hard the to believe that the normally placid Yawa river can turn into such a raging torrent! It's usually so shallow you can wade right across it.

Mickey is not yet here. Hopefully, he's all right. I;m still working here... heheh...

Nakaka-touch naman tong sinabi mo. My co-workers think it is no longer safe to stay in Albay. I vehemently said no. I don't think so. Albay will live on.

Great idea. Hahaha! Now I can laugh. No, don't think I am being apathetic. We lost our house, that is. Since my friends knew of it, they have kept sending me messages that life must go on. I told them the messages were repetitive and they only made me feel miserable.

Apparently, I am all right.

Monsi!!!!! Maray ta di ka naano. Huna ko baga may nangyari na saimo. Nakakagimbal yung picture na pinost mo. I wasn't there during the typhoon.

Mond, good to hear from you. I am happy you're well.

So is it really true that there is a detour there in Guinobatan? Hay haluyon kaan an byahe. Maray ngani ta sa Guinobatan na kami naglipat. Don't worry, guys. Malayo sa Travesia. But we'll surely go back to Daraga.

I am surprised to know that despite what happened, Legazpi forum has remained zesty. Hehe!

Hey Matt and Dex:hi:
@ Matt, nice avatar pic - was it taken by a photographer? looks like a studio pic

@Dex, I think this is the story you're referring to - ironic that it was caused by the relief convoy:

Relief goods cause bridge
collapse in Guinobatan
from: Manila Times

By Rhaydz Barcia, Correspondent

LEGAZPI CITY: Organizers of Malacañang’s relief caravan for victims of Supertyphoon Re*ming got a bad scare Wednesday when the heavy load of close to 200 trucks cause the collapse of the Traversia bridge in a known rebel haven in Guinobatan, Albay.

An aide of Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya confirmed the report but said no one was hurt. Malacañang spokesman Igna*cio Bunye said he did not know of the incident, which happened about 1:30 p.m.

Albay officials called it “a near disaster” but said no one was hurt in the incident. The remainder of the relief caravan managed to make it to Guino*batan by dusk, using diversion roads.

The bridge collapse, however, caused widespread dismay with local executives warning it could hamper rehabilitation efforts.

At one point, Councilor Cerilo Chan of this city even asked Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando to help in the construction of a substitute bridge.

Rep. Joey Salceda promised that a temporary replacement would go up in two days.

Army troops rushed to secure the convoy and 65th Army battalion chief, Col. Manny Or*duna, said soldiers would stay to guard over relief teams and commuters forced to use diversion routes.

The original caravan was composed of 286 trucks when it left Manila but organizers said dozens of more trucks joined as they passed through Laguna, Batangas and Quezon provinces.

Nearing the devastated Bicol region, the relief caravan broke into several convoys.

The first batch reached Pili, Camarines Sur about 9 p.m. Tuesday night. The last convoy straggled in about 3 a.m.

The caravan kicked off again 10 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving behind around 90 trucks for Pili, while 10 more went in the direction of Marinduque province.

Andaya’s aide said 148 trucks had arrived in Guinobatan proper by dusk. Other trucks were left in Sorsogon and 10 went to Catanduanes, another devastated province.

I am happy about how we Filipinos unite when a disaster strikes our land. My fellow Albayanos are really in a dire need. Natutuwa ako. Well, who cares if I am happy. Ah basta I am happy, kahit na maraming namatay, the Filipino spirit of camaraderie is aflame.

Ei guys. Kumusta? There are unconfirmed reports that a part of the highway in Travesia, Guinobatan has collapsed. Can anyone confirm?

Totoo yun Dex. Our students nga from Albay and Sorsogon will not be allowed to go home tomorrow afternoon kasi baka gabihin na. They'll be sent home Saturday morning. Sabi nung student ko, yung detour takes another hour for one to reach Daraga. Anyway, this will end sooner than expected kasi maraming gumagawa to iron out the mess.

Can you at least PM us some of the pics? :)
We expats have not seen any pics of downtown Legazpi since the typhoon - I guess we're just dying of curiosity.
BTW, what happened to those garish street lights on Quezon Ave ? Did they somehow survive? And the boardwalk...? And PM Mall...? Too many questions, sorry! :)

Dex, Jerry, Mond, Yves... accounted for.
...Mickey, SMB, Six, cannot be reached... I hope we're all alive.

My cam is under repair... I hope Yves, though undertandably he does not want to show the extent of damage we suffered, would soon post pictures of the rehab and restoration work done by MMDA, Naga City LGU, Meralco, Davao Light, and scores of concerned gov't agencies and NGO's. It is heartwarming to see peoples from all parts of the country converging here to help and encourage Albayanos rise again.

This morning, the street lights along Rizal Street are back (sans electricity, yet). The light fixtures on top were preemptively removed just before Reming, including those garish ones on Quezon Avenue. Mayor Rosal promised to make our streets--Rizal Street, Quezon Avenue, Peñaranda, Seaside-boulevard bright again before Christmas.

Pacific Mall's fine, National Book Store held a booksale to the delight of bookworms--I bought more than a dozen classics... Max's Restaurant is purportedly to open December 16. Hardy Legazpeños still patronize the restaurant row in Albay District, including Small Talk, Chili Peppers, Gasthof, and Tigs would you believe, Champions Sports Bar? It is a time to mourn but some of us irrepressible! Maybe to some of us its our way of coping with tragedy...

LCC's men's department, being in the ground floor and thus flooded, held a sale with items at up to 70% off! (I was able to buy Dockers polo and polo shirt at half the sticker price...sayang man, I would have second thoughts buying these during normal times!)

GMA Campus Radio was first to broadcast, followed by OK-FM airing DZGB-AM emergency broadcast. Now we have Home, Campus, MOR (ABS-CBN), RC-FM, and TV-4 (ABS-CBN). In the evening, TV-4 simulcasts with MOR-FM.

We're getting there... I hope we would.

Residents in Padang will be relocated to a 10 hectare lot in Taysan; barangays in Daraga to Anislag, Guinobatan to Mauraro... I hope our city planners would seriously consider relocating our vulnerable urban areas to the southern barangays--Taysan, Homapon, Banquerohan, Bariis, Buenavista, and San Francisco--to name a few. These areas are vast, virtually flat, and and thinly populated, and away from lahar and deposits of volcanic debris.

^^Hi Monsi,
It's good that local authorities were proactive enough to dismantle some of the streetlights. If they do get switched on by Christmas it would bring a welcome cheer to the gloom that has gripped our city.
So I take it only the large establishments have electricity (through generators)? Is there any further news on when power will be restored throughout the city?
I agree it's better to permanantly relocate the residents of those outlying barrios, otherwise the same thing will happen again.
It's nice to know the city is slowly getting back to normal. I hope we hear from the other forumers soon.

Honestly i didn't took any photo, what I saw was a bit scary, I went up to our second floor balcony during the typhoon, and all I saw were roof tops of bongalow houses, these were the squatter areas in oro site and bitano.

With such a scary scene I choose not to take pics or post any on inet, coz it sure can make you think twice about living here, and what damage Mt Mayon can really do. Word of advise to those planning to do business or build a house..have a contingency plan. Do research on lahar prone areas, and make sure you know how high flood waters can get in your area. what happened with reming marks a new history for the city.

Despite all the city has been through this year I think we're pulling through great, I have news that electricity will be back on certain areas tomorrow, panic buying in groceries has certainly stopped, water supply is somewhat ok, although garbage and dusty streets are still an issue, i'm sure it would take just a few more days of help from our hard working kababayan from diff cities to fix.

I haven't started taking pics, maybe soon though it's been such a busy 15 days for me and maybe even till the year end.

*one thing I notice, on the good side all those ugly useless wires of matelco are slowly disappearing.

Matt, I think Dex said in a previous post that the Cagsawa bell tower is still there but the souvenir shops and museum have been damaged.

The small river adjacent to Cagsawa (probably a tributary or a source of the Yawa River) became a huge channel where the volcanic debris flowed towards Cullat and other barangays in Daraga.

Bloom after the ruins

THE devastations wrought by Typhoon Reming beggars description. It was as if hell broke loose, especially in Albay province which was hardest hit when the super howler lashed Bicol last Nov. 30 with the strongest rainfall and disastrous wind speed ever recorded in recent years. A day after, hundreds were reported dead who were either swept into the sea or buried by rampaging mudflows, more were missing; almost 85 percent of the homes in that forlorn province, according to reports, were either swept away, severely damaged, or the roofs crumpled or blown away. The cost of damage to crops and agriculture were inestimable, turning back the clock at least one or three more years for the coconut trees and other similar agricultural industries to see them productive again.

It was unfortunate enough that Reming struck Albay when it has barely recovered from the punishing disaster that Typhoon Milenyo in early October 2006 wrought. It was unfortunate enough that Reming struck when the cascading molten rocks threatened Albayanos as early as August this year when Mayon was showing restiveness over an impending eruption.

What has the Albayanos done so bad that they have to suffer like this? Why should Bicol be subjected to a calamitous series of fire and rain when after all it has been suffering enough as the third poorest region in the whole country?

In harrowing succession, Mayon, Milenyo and Reming conspired to cut a deadly swath around the region. It was as if the lights were going out all over Bicol, as in fact they did after thousands of electric posts and power lines laid toppled along the streets and highways in the aftermath of both typhoons Milenyo and Reming.

It was unfortunate enough that the most damage was wrung upon Albay where hundreds of millions of pesos, taxpayers’ money to be sure, were lustily appropriated for multi-million projects by its rabid pro-GMA congressman, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, who incidentally is the Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, to the exclusion, we suspect of other districts (say, for instance Naga City) which are down listed as opposition bailiwicks.

Did God and nature conspire to send us the message that Albay, after all, is not an ideal, or at least a viable, place for a multi-million peso international airport, or a poorly constructed yet super expensive seaport, and more specifically why not spread out the money on priority projects that are meant to address the people’s more urgent needs, such as food and livelihood, and labor intensive industries that call for sustainable development? Or more succinctly, is it God’s way of putting good sense back into the minds of our so-called political leaders and legislators who have idolized nothing but power and money?

But lest we become prophets of doom, let us be reminded of significant lines in the Book of Job as paraphrased by a Jesuit priest, Fr. Joseph A. Galdon: “It’s true that there isn’t much justice in our world. Life isn’t very fair. The good suffer and the innocent are destroyed. The evil triumph and the wicked succeed. The good guys always seem to lose and the bad guys are always winning. How can we say that God is good when everything seems to be terribly unfair?”

The answer: There can be no Easter without Good Friday. There can be no spring without Winter’s agony and pain. There can be no love without suffering. Yes, Bergonia, there will always be forsythia blooming in the ruins. There will be life again after death. Life must go on, but this time, the wicked must fall.

Anyway, I sent the paper my feedback on the whole thing.

^^^RE: That article above.
Apparently, the fact that Albay sits right in front of the world's biggest hurricane generator and is home to a hyperactive volcano had nothing to do with it! But no, God's will has been mysteriously communicated to the paper's editors and we have been informed that he disapproves of international airports.

The article's point, if it has one, can be summed up in one sentence:
God punished Albay for voting for evil Arroyo.

That's it!

The paper could have avoided wasting so much ink and paper (plundered from the nation's already denuded rainforests)!

Need I say more?? :puke:

The article is a huge crap. Joey Salceda is a very good decision maker. He's got brains and uses it for the good of the economy as a whole. He is a lot better than the crappy egg-head senators line up we have right now.
Most of the victims and destructions in Albay, like people that lived near the river and at the foot of the Mayon, are obviously an accident waiting to happen. The calamity is not a work of God as the article wanted the brainless to accept. And look how they attack rather than suggest a good resolution. It is no secret that Albay is the first to be struck by typhoons that pick up on the eastern Pacific Ocean. Everybody knows it. Despite the fact, why the people chose to reside in the danger zone could be due to poverty or lack of land. But we cannot blame the poor people. They had no choice but built houses along the danger zone.
However, the reming/durian calamity will make the survivors see the light, that they really need to be relocated far from the foot of the Mayon and away from the rivers. I suggest to the people there to build homes out of the danger zone. That zone could be useful as a coconut plantation park and casagwa ruins park. A place to visit during a good weather condition just like any other tourist destination.

Yes Albay needs to be developed. We must be thankful for Albay, a place where we get the bulk of our renewable energy in the form of electricity. At least now we get a better picture of how to map out the development of Albay. Visit Albay in 2007.

I was wondering though, will these recent mishaps cause Albay's politicians to rethink the viability and sustainability of the international airport and seaport in Albay? Or will they rechannel the resources to recovery , relocation and livelihood projects?

sandrn
December 17th, 2006, 06:40 AM
An international airport and seaport is certainly viable in Albay. The only question is which part of Albay is the most suitable area for both ports. Naturally, it should be far away from the foot of Mayon and that the construction materials needed to build them should be of the highest standard to withstand typhoons (ie. glass materials are not recommended).

Were you staying with relatives Dex?
Do you know if Aquinas and St Agnes were badly damaged or flooded?

Yup. I think among the schools here in Legazpi, St. Agnes and Aquinas suffered the most damage. SAA's faculty room was flooded and the roof of the library peeled off. But classes for Grade 6 and 4th year HS students have resumed because they can't extend till April (some of them will be applying to different colleges and universities by then). My mom said their records, report cards, lesson plans were all damaged by the flood. Of course, SAA will survive, this isn't the worst that can happen to the school. Remember that WW2 photo of the bombed out SAA building?

AUL was also flooded (as usual) but this time most of the buildings suffered broken windows and collapsed roofs. Classes there will resume by January. They have a lot to clean up.

@six, thanks for the pix. I wasn't able to take aerial pics of Legazpi when we flew to Manila last week because I was on an aisle seat.

:puke:

Ang taray! Haha! Personally, nainis ako when I read that. I was annoyed, too, that the writer didn't follow the rudiments in editorial writing. Napaka-loose ng points such that they didn't support the thesis statement, if there was any. Anyway, I had sent my feedback on the piece. The paper is a Bicol weekly based in you know where. It's the same paper where i read Daraga isn't the place for the airport because there's no economic activity there.

And the fact that the writer could inject God into the piece is mere blasphemy.

I was wondering though, will these recent mishaps cause Albay's politicians to rethink the viability and sustainability of the international airport and seaport in Albay? Or will they rechannel the resources to recovery , relocation and livelihood projects?

I hope they don't. Albay is still where both projects should be put up.

I agree with you. I hope the typhoon isn't used as a convenient excuse to cancel development projects in Albay. However, the mudflows highlight the importance of building the proposed new airport as far away from Mayon as possible. I am actually very surprised that the current airport was still operational despite being very close to the mudlfows - especially the runway, which extends towards the Yawa river.

I think the 'planned site' for the international airport is VERY VIABLE and VERY SAFE area... Aside from the fact that it is on an ELEVATED location, it is also FAR ENOUGH from the site of mudflows and Mayon Volcano's wrath... About economic activity, the site does not need to have so! Airports don't need it, hello! I've known a lot of airports to be located far from central business districts and yet have operated successfully... Btw, Aquinas have plans to relocate to Brgy. Penafrancia, Daraga, Albay, w/c is close to the planned airport. On the other hand, lots in Jaucian village are now priced high as ever, w/c means to say that the area is safe for residential houses because it is far enough from Mayon. This village is very close to the planned airport...

About Reming, I think it's a challenge, a fork on the road. What bigger surprise that God has in store for us, is that PROGRESS LIES AHEAD AND WILL BE BIGGER due to the STRENGTH we have gathered from surviving Reming. I was inspired by Fr. Guarin's messages during last Sunday's mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe (?) yung bang sa Tahao Road... Heheh... does anybody have pictures of it? I think it is the best church in Albay...

Hi Mond!
If I have my way, I would prefer Legazpi Airport relocated to the originally chosen site; i.e., in Bariis, which is 27 kilometers away from Mayon's crater. Alobo, at 15 kilomoters from the crater, is just two or three kilometers farther from the present airport runway alignment. While Alobo is far from lahar flow, at 15 kilometers, it could still be affected by ashfalls, which, as you know, pose danger to jet engines; thus, flights will still be cancelled. Approaches and take offs in Bariis would be over the sea (Poliqui Bay in Legazpi, and the sea in Pilar or Castilla) while in Alobo, planes would fly over urban areas and Mount Bariw, where the towers of ABS-CBN and Digitel are erected (possible hazard).

However, the politicians have decided, so pwede na man an Alobo.

Daddy Monsi,

Ashfall from Mayon can get to Sorsogon, depending on the wind's direction. As far as I know, Bariis is not immune from the ashfall. pS, I don't think it was the politicians' decision to move the site to Alobo. I thought it was the decision of the Japanese experts who concluded that the Daraga site has the most stable wind compared to a set of alternatives... ;)

I dont care what some guys here think about those lights but to me they've never been more significant to this city than ever..those large spotlights in the sky just showed everyone that we're back on our way to recovery..since most of the city are still in pitch black those lights have never been more visible.:)

Mond, our politicians have the last say... JICA approved the Bariis site. Suddenly, Alobo came into the picture and was promptly chosen by RDC, then headed by former governor Bichara. (Rumors have it that politicians have vast land holdings in Alobo...so they say...)

Anyway, what is important is the immediate relocation of the present airport as it is vulnerable to flashfloods; Yawa scoured a gaping portion of Bogtong diversion road I recon less than 500 meters from the runway.

We have wept enough, now it is time to move on...

Ei, jj! The one behind is mine... the day I took back my trusty digicam from Sony service center in Cabangan (that's why I seldom posted).

Here's a passage from the Bicolano fiction writer Bienvenido Santos ("My Most Memorable Christmas in America") to give you comfort (heheh) during the Holidays:

"...However long he has stayed away from home, however, busy, the Filipino in America feels deepest at Christmas time the quick sharp thrusts of homesickness. All the glitter and color and sound intended to liven up the flurry of buying that has to be done early and secretly, serve but to call attention to his exile.

He remembers home. Back in his room he begins over again the letter he has been intending to write all these months but never quite finishes. It starts out well: 'Dearest... it is Christmas again -- how time passes! -- the snow is thick on the ground..."

Let me stop here before you run out of kleenex!

Spanish NGO offers help to Albay

By Juan Escandor Jr.
Inquirer
Last updated 11:22pm (Mla time) 12/07/2006

Published on Page A19 of the December 8, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

NAGA CITY—A Spanish nongovernment organization is offering assistance to Supertyphoon “Reming” victims.

The Accion Contra El Hambre (Aceh), which has headquarters in Madrid, is processing the needs of victims in Daraga, Albay and in Cabusao, Camarines Sur. The two areas were hit hard by Reming.

Committed to fight hunger worldwide, Aceh also conducts relief operations, rehabilitation programs and development initiatives in places of starvation.

Vincent Mervoyer, food security coordinator, said the group primarily responds to food and potable water needs in disaster areas.

Mervoyer said that in certain circumstances Aceh provides temporary shelter and mats.

He said the group was now working with indigenous people in Caraga and had been in Guinsaugon in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte, when a mudslide swallowed the entire village.

Mervoyer said his group had to assess first what the victims need before starting relief operations.

He said that in Cabusao, they had to respond to the people’s need for temporary shelter, aside from food and water.

“The people there were camping out because even the evacuation centers (school buildings) were destroyed,” Mervoyer said.

He added that in procuring food, they always studied the availability of supply.

“If the procurement of food would result in shortage in the area, we would resort to buying them outside,” Mervoyer said.

He said they implement directly the program in close coordination with local authorities and other agencies.

Mervoyer said that after Reming hit the region, he coordinated with the Bicol Regional Disaster Coordinating Council and offered help until he was referred to the provincial government of Camarines Sur.

Legazpi City: The Spanish government, through the Agencia Espanola de Cooperacion Internacional, has donated 600,000 euros (more than P39 million) worth of medical and relief aid to the typhoon victims in Albay.

Maria Eugenia Martin-Sanz Martinez, head of the Spanish agency’s relief department, on Sunday handed over to the Albay provincial government a water-purifying machine, medical equipment and food supplies as assistance to communities devastated by Supertyphoon Reming on November 30.

In a simple turnover rites at the Pepperland Hotel this city, Gov. Fernando Gonzalez, whose parents are of Spanish descent, said the assistance from the Spanish government was a “reflection of great affection to the Filipino people for the past 300 years. Truly they are our brothers and true friend.”

He said the Spanish relief agency had swiftly mobilized their relief and medical teams to assist in disaster operation in villages in Guinobatan and this city, which were among the hardest hit areas by “Reming.”

A C-130 plane flew two teams of doctors, nurses and other medical technicians straight from Spain who brought along with them the water-purifying machine, tent mini hospital, medical equipment and supplies.

The plane landed at Legazpi’s domestic airport. The team proceeded directly to Guinobatan and set-up the water-purifier machine, Gonzalez said.

The machine can cleanse 3,000 liters of water an hour. The water was bottled and distributed to thousand of families in evacuation camps and households.

Martinez told The Manila Times that the mobile water-purifying machine could provide clean water to 10,092 families or 82,524 people and 16,000 families in Legazpi.

She said that after seeing the devastating effects of “Re*ming,” the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation immediately sent the composite team to aid the typhoon victims.

The agency also allocated an equivalent of P13 million for food and canned goods and for the possible reconstruction of damaged hospitals in the three districts of the province.

Martinez told civil defense and disaster relief officials her group “gave all their best to help the people of Albay.”

The armada of DYA (Détente y Ayueda) Stop and Help, composed mostly of physicians and response teams, was making the rounds of the evacuation centers, Martinez said.

“Reming” slammed into Albay on November 30 and left 1,215 people either dead or missing and 1,444 people injured form mudslides and floodwaters from the slopes of Mount Mayon.

The typhoon either destroyed or badly damaged 174,168 houses across the province. Damage to crops and infrastructure was placed at P1.3 billion.

The Catholic Church in the United States also pledged $500,000 (roughly P24.7 million) in assistance for the victims of the last two supertyphoons.

The donation will be coursed through the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official humanitarian agency of the United States Catholic Bishops’ Conference (USBC).

“Reming,” the fourth storm to hit the country in four months, has claimed lives and destroyed hundreds of millions of pesos worth of infrastructures and facilities and crops.

Most of the fatalities were within the six-kilometer danger zone of Mount Mayon when winds of up to 265 kilometers an hour and torrential rains sent walls of mud and boulders crashing down on villages.

Officials say more than a million people from 9 cities and 13 provinces have been affected, with more than 85,000 forced to seek shelter in evacuation centers.

Property damage has so far been assessed at P600,000. Before the latest blow, villages throughout the Philippines were still recovering from the devastation of “Milenyo” and “Paeng.”

In collaboration with Caritas Philippines, the CRS said it will conduct an assessment for the rehabilitation of homes and livelihoods.

The agency is dispatching a team that will coordinate efforts to help affected residents restore their livelihoods.

Over the past two years, CRS has been working with the CBCP-National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace (NASSA) to conduct disaster preparedness and response training in all of the disaster-prone areas of the Philippines.

CRS has been working in the Philippines since 1945, when they initiated relief and reconstruction efforts after World War II.

The agency continues to provide relief to victims of emergencies, whether natural disasters or manmade emergencies. They also support ongoing programs in peace and reconciliation, health and agriculture.

The Pope had earlier sent a “telegram of condolence” over the series of tragedies that hit the Philippines and called for a worldwide help.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has also appealed to all the faithful to help generously those affected by the disaster.

Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, CBCP president, said the people should try to live their Christian faith by extending their help to the typhoon victims.

“May we be strong in our faith, hope and love of God and of our neighbor in these times of difficulties,” he prayed. “May we read correctly the signs of the times of salvation and grow in our maturity and openness,” Lagdameo said.

I must say, except for the continuing power outage in some areas (and the still excruciatingly long queues at ATMs), life in Legazpi City is getting back to normal compared to the situation here when we left for Manila two weeks ago. BTW, Max's Restaurant - Pacific Mall is now open, welcome to Legazpi! :)

@tigs, thanks for the pic :)

Ah okay... That's the other side of the coin. Now I don't know which side to believe. There are many truths... But I did not get my info from a present politico... Pero thanks for the info, Daddy Monsi!

"...el sitio nada importa." --Rizal

Mond, our politicians have the last say... JICA approved the Bariis site. Suddenly, Alobo came into the picture and was promptly chosen by RDC, then headed by former governor Bichara. (Rumors have it that politicians have vast land holdings in Alobo...so they say...)

Anyway, what is important is the immediate relocation of the present airport as it is vulnerable to flashfloods; Yawa scoured a gaping portion of Bogtong diversion road I recon less than 500 meters from the runway.

We have wept enough, now it is time to move on...
City hall has reinstalled the garish street lamps on Quezon Avenue... Kinatawan Pepe Estevez also initiated "Musika Para sa Bagong Pagasa" December 21, 5:00 p.m., in front of LCC on Quezon Avenue.

To Miss Lili, Matt, Tim, Jj, Patrick, Tigs and all your fellow Pinoys (I think the term 'Flip' is no longer derogatory, is it?) shivering in winter... and of course to our man in London, Doc, and in the Lion City, Oli. From Legazpeeps here in Legazpi and Bicol, Reming survivors all... MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Nahhhh!..."Flip" is accepted now! nothing can take us down!!!....Anyways Thanks Monsi!!!.....You Have a Merry Christmas TOO!...AND EVERY ONE IN SSC Legazpi....And to my KABABAYANS THERE!!!....SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE LEGAZPI....Best wishes to all!!!....MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Nice rainbow, Monsi.

"This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

Hey guys, I've recently finished reading a novel, entitled "The Fifth Mountain" by Paulo Coelho. Gosh, it had a lot of similarities about what happened in my life. A part of the book tells something about a death of a river, and guess what? At about the same moment I was reading it, our poor dog died! Then weeks later, Reming arrived and destroyed Legazpi city. A day after, I arrived at the part where the city of Akbar is being destroyed by a war. What a coincidence!

I guess the road is old now. You should have seen the way it looks like before it was paved. It was horrendous. That road was done in the early 80s. All credit to the late archbishop of Legazpi. Back then when President Marcos visited Legazpi City, Monsignor Pacis requested to have that road paved.

Monsi, I'm guessing from your window view that you live in the hilly part of Legazpi, somewhere near Mayon Imperial. Mayon always looks impressive, no matter what the angle is.

Spain donates P39m to Albay
By Mar Arguelles

LEGAZPI CITY—The Spanish government, through the Agencia Española de Cooperacion Internacional, has turned over to Albay Gov. Fernando Gonzales 600,000 euros (P39 million) worth of water purifiers, medical equipment and food supplies as assistance to communities devastated by super-typhoon Reming.

Gonzales said during a simple turnover rites here, the assistance given by the Spanish government was a “reflection of great affection to the Filipino people for the past 300 years, truly they are our brothers and true friends.”

Gonzales said “Spain had been with us during the most terrible times when tragedy befell the province.”

He said the Spanish aid agency swiftly responded and mobilized their relief and medical teams to assist in disaster operations in villages in the town of Guinobatan and this city which were among the areas hardest hit by the typhoon.

According to Gonzales, the agency mobilized a Hercules C-130 cargo plane that flew two teams straight from Spain and brought a water purifying machine, a mini-hospital, medical equipment and supplies, including doctors, nurses and other medical technicians, to help the victims.

The water purifying machine can cleanse 3,000 liters of water per hour and bottled water were distributed to thousands of families in various evacuation camps and households who were in dire need of potable water.

The mobile water purifying machine was set up in Guinobatan to provide clean water to 10,092 families, or 82,524 people, and 16,000 families in this city.

The agency also allocated 200,000 euros, or P13 million, in food and canned good supplies, including the possible reconstruction of damaged hospitals located in the three districts of the province.

Eugenia Martin-Sanz Martinez, the Spanish agency’s relief department head, told members of the provincial and regional disaster officials that her group “gave all their best to help the people of Albay.”

Hay. Our house was somewhere down there. We were there this morning, excavating. Masaya kasi puro kami magpipinsan. We got the wall clock. Its time was quarter to 3 in the afternoon--that was when the flood started destroying our abode. We also got the bamboo seats. Lumutang kasi sila. Then some clothes, yung kutson. Haha! Natatawa na lang kami. Yung iba ewan kung kelan. Matubig kasi pag malalim na yung hukay.

Anyway, Happy New Year pa rin sa ating lahat. The best to come in 2007!

'Bicol Rising' in I-Witness Monday night

MORE than 600 dead, with hundreds still missing, thousands injured, and millions of pesos worth of damaged properties.

These numbers describe the devastation caused by super typhoon Reming in Bicol but these figures cannot quantify the psychological and emotional trauma inflicted upon the victims.

Documentarist Jay Taruc has traveled many times to Bicol in the past year for his documentaries on whale sharks, teachers and the Mayon Volcano. But his latest trip to the region is not a happy one.

He revisits the shoreline of Barangay. Padang and Bigaa, known for their whale shark sightings, only to find a virtual desert.

Gone are the boats and noises coming from fishermen and children. Everywhere, there are only flattened fields of destruction. Jay also revisits the schools of towns previously featured in his documentary, only to find each filled no longer with students but with displaced residents.

And among the homeless, Jay finds out, are some of his old friends and interviewees.

In the midst of it all, Jay Taruc documents the efforts of these Bicolanos to overcome the tragedy and slowly rebuild their lives. "Pagsibol ng Bicol" airs Monday night on GMA's I-Witness.

Work gives hope to villagers displaced by calamities
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/regions/view_article.php?article_id=41900
By Ephraim Aguilar
Inquirer
Last updated 01:49am (Mla time) 01/06/2007

LEGAZPI CITY—Some villagers displaced by Supertyphoon “Reming” in Albay found temporary work building latrines in 19 evacuation shelters in Albay.

At least 84 men and women were able to build 124 hand-washing facilities, 248 toilets, and 49 single-unit bathing cubicles in a ‘cash-for-work’ program implemented by Oxfam, an international humanitarian organization, during the holiday season.

The workers were selected from among the evacuees in the shelters, where the sanitary toilets were built, and were paid P150 to P200 each everyday, depending on their skills and kind of work, said Mel Capistrano, program manager of Oxfam’s Emergency Response in Bicol.

Joselito Millare, 32, father of two and whose family was temporarily housed at the upper Malabog evacuation center in Daraga, Albay was one of those hired by Oxfam for the construction of double-pit latrines in the evacuation site.

“We were given employment and we ourselves were able to benefit from the work we did,” said Millare.

He added he was able to buy noodles and a half-kilogram of meat last Christmas while saving P500 for his family’s house transfer.

Oxfam earlier distributed P1,000 cash grants and non-food items in Barangay Bungalon in Daraga town and Barangays Gapo, Tagaytay, Baligang, Cabangan, and Salugan in Camalig—all in Albay—covering 2,100 families.

In Malilipot, Sto. Domingo, and Bacacay—all in Albay—more than 3,000 families benefited from the cash-for-work program of World Vision, an international Christian relief organization, which was assisted by a $200,000-funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The hired workers, who rebuilt destroyed houses and cleared clogged roads, each received P100 and 5 kg of rice everyday.

Evacuees staying in public schools would have to decamp on Sunday as classes were to resume on Jan. 8 as ordered by the Department of Education here. Tent cities would be built in relocation areas in Albay to temporarily provide shelter for the displaced villagers, said Evelyn Jerusalem, public information officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Bicol.

Nongovernment organizations and local government agencies are now involved in the construction of houses for the displaced villagers and providing alternative livelihood for those who have lost their farms to the mudflow, Jerusalem said.

She said the local government units are now submitting their rehabilitation plans, which would be consolidated and submitted to the DSWD central office next week.

A total of 6,980 families, or 33,789 persons, from 128 villages housed in 126 shelters in Albay still rely on government and nongovernment relief assistance for more than a month now after Reming ravaged Bicol, said the provincial disaster coordinating council.

Legazpi really has nice topographic features. Aside from majestic Mayon view from the city, you also have the chance to view the city itself from that hill. It is so conveniently situated for everyone's easy access... or is it accesssible to the public?.

Yeah it is..It has become a very popular destination for locals ever since a road up the hill was built a few years back. Prior to that, people would flock to the hill for a good hike every weekend. There used to be a lighthouse there too, pero wala na yata ngayon. My dad says the light can be seen as far away as Rapu-rapu island.

A very imposing structure built on its peak will be a sight to behold and could serve also as Legazpi's landmark aside from Mayon.

Something like the gigantic Christ the Redeemer at Rio de Janeiro or Dambana ng Kagitingan cross at Mt Samat in Bataan.

yves188's aerial shots seem to also indicate that a major flood control project should be implemented along the Yawa to avoid future disasters...although its river banks look so serene when left natural, the course of the river and its breadth contribute to a deadly formula when the rain and run-off come down as they did during last December's typhoons.

Accdg. to the legend of Mt. Mayon, Daragang Magayon used to bathe in the cool waters of this river. One day, while frolicking in its banks, she almost drowned if not for a stranger named Ulap who saved her. And the rest is history....or rather, myth. It's only a legend anyway, hehehe.

Stephen Blaxland of BN Group Pty Ltd, an Austracian-based architectural, urban design, masterplanning, graphics and interior design firm integrates with Misibis and Inc for the Marina-inspired “Embarcadero”, formerly
dubbed as the Sunwest Wharf. The Embarcadero is regarded as the jumped off point to Bicol’s eight wonders of eco-tourism – the Mayon Volcano, Sula Channel, underground river of Pototan Cave, giant Manta Rays of Ticao Pass, Whalesharks of Donsol, Sorsogon, Vera Falls in Malinao, Albay, Nag-Asu Boiling Lake in Manito, Albay, and Misibis Resorts, Estates & Spa – and is projected to be the premier commercial, IT and recreational seafront
development in the Bicol Region.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k153/sixth2006/city6.jpg
Mr. Blaxland’s inception to the conceptual masterplan of the Embarcadero causes huge overturn in the entirety of the project. The BN Group is now
on process of reviewing the drawing list according to t h e i r international
standard of quality of documentation and design in order for the project not to suffer if being expedited by pushing the m i d - 2 0 0 7 g r a n d launching of the project. Henceforth, it is expected that the launch would be moved to a later date but worthy of its well-rounded modifications.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k153/sixth2006/city5.jpg
The initial of the two-phase masterplanning of the BN group includes retail, amenities, public space and road layouts up to and including the Celebration Square. Mr. Blaxland’s partaking in the masterplanning of Embarcadero takes
account of (a) masterplanning, (b) architectural design for phases 1 & 2 concept and schematic design standard, (c) design development, (d) structural design, (e) design approaches to building including landscape designs and (f) signage approach.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k153/sixth2006/city.jpg
Mr. Blaxland visited the Embarcadero (Sunwest Wharf) Site in Legazpi Port Area, Misibis Resorts, Estates and Spa last September 8, 2006 and the remarkable whaleshark-spotting area in Donsol Town in Sorsogon Province. He was accompanied by Sunwest Group Mr. Zaldy Co, President and CEO, Operations Manager Sly Natividad and HSAI Raintree staff during her extensive
one-day trip. It can be noted that the BN Group is one of the most
r e p u t a b l e architectural and urban design firm in the world. BN Group were engaged by Suria KLCC in association with Petronas Bhd to p r e p a r e
s c h e m a t i c designs for a new one acre site directly adjacent to the existing Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC R e t a i l Podium. The new 150,000 sq. ft. retail podium is fully integrated with the existing Suria retail at
all levels and a fifty storey, 750, 000sq ft signature office tower, that functioned independently of the retail podium with street level entry.
BN is also no stranger to wharf project as it heads the master planning of
the East D a r l i n g Harbour in S y d n e y , Australia. BN Group’s submission to the international design competition focuses on the desire to create an
active and vibrant ‘people place’, through the creation of an urban square, new parks and an amphitheatre that link directly to the harbour.
“With the fusion of BN Group in the Embarcadero Project, it is doubly expected that the project would foray the true meaning of world-class” development.”
The design recognizes the original history and geography of the site, by the regeneration of Millers Point as the headland and the reinterpretation of the old wharf buildings into residential and c o m m e r c i a l s p a c e s .
Moreover, the BN Group is also the masterplanner for the Queen Victoria
Lane Cove Market Square also in Sydney.
With the fusion of BN Group in the Embarcadero Project, it is doubly expected that the project would foray the true meaning of “ w o r l d - c l a s s ”
development. The economic booming of the Albay Province and its neighboring cities and provinces is expected to surge in the coming years with establishment and operation of this superlative man-made marvel. Truly, the Embarcadero shall epitomize Bicol at its best, featuring a spectacle of
man-made and natural wonders blended into one. (Bjoern

Misibis Land Inc recently purchased a semi-submersible vessel called “Yellow Submarine”. The purchase cf the vessel is for tourism purposes – to be able to view aquatic wonders and submarine landscapes especially to that of the whaleshark of Donsol and the Albay Gulf.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k153/sixth2006/city2.jpg
The Yellow Submarine is a 4-passenger vessel composed of 2 crews
and 2 passengers less than 4 meters in length and with a draft of 0.78m.
With a fiberglass hull, it is just appropriate for a deep sea exploration
since it has heavy resistance to ocean current and stream.
Historically, semi-submersible vessel’s invention relates to offshore
structures, and more particularly to offshore structures adapted for
supporting oil and gas exploration/production operations at sea.
Semi-submersible vessels represent one type of an offshore structure that
is used for conducting operations at sea. Now, the same is now used for
simple tourism and leisure activities, with a redefined overall appearance.

Misibis Land Inc recently purchased a brand new custocized R-44 Raven II Helicopter. Primarily for tourism purposes, the purchase of Raven II Chopper is another addition to the privileges where Club Misibis can avail as the chopper is for rental. The chopper can be used to tour Bicol’s 8 wonders of Eco-Tourism. Tour packages to these wonders and other key tourist spots in the adjacent areas shall be unveiled upon full operations of Misibis Resorts,
Estates & Spa.
Moreover, shares are also for sale for Club Misibis Members at 50 hours per share equivalent to US$20,000 (approx. Php1M) per share limited to only about 20 members/shares. Comparatively, it is merely like purchasing an
expensive car but instead enjoying the luxury of atmosphere cruise thru this precision-engineered chopper.
Dubbed as “Affordable Luxury”, the Raven’s distinctive aerodynamic design allows a high speed cruise. This state-of-the-art chopper delivers the performance of an expensive turbine helicopter at an affordable piston price. Raven II is equipped with a fuel-injected, angle-valve, tune-induction
which produce substantially more power and, literally, gives it a greater altitude performance, more payload and increased speed.
It is planned however, that as subsidiary of the Sunwest Group, a new company Sunwest Air shall be born in the succeeding years.
