7-star po talaga si Oriental?

Nope. There's no such thing as a six or seven star hotel. The Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai is widely described as a "seven-star" property, but the hotel says the label originates from an unnamed British journalist on a press trip and that they neither encourage its use nor do they use it in their advertising. (Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_%28classification%29#Six-_and_seven-star_hotels)).

The hotel classification standard is usually: Tourist (*), Standard (**), Comfort (***), First Class (****) and Luxury (*****). However, these can be considered hotel types instead of standards. So, most likely The Oriental is anywhere between First Class and Luxury. Most hotels claim a star rating only as a form of advertisement.

As for The Oriental Legazpi, the Marketing Officer of LKY affirmed (when we talked to her last time) that they will leave it up to the clients to determine the standard based on their experience in the hotel. You won't find any star rating in their website. :)

I see. But I think Maxims Hotel in Newport City(Resorts World) is the only 6-star hotel in the country, probably the highest so far.

Pinalitan kang ESPRIT su MANGO..:ohno:
wara na man su Padi's Point :ohno:

Mango is too expensive kasi. Anyway I think they will still offer Mango products at Mye Cutoure.

As for Padi's Point, mabenta man kuta ini pag banggi but I guess, they couldn't keep up with the homegrown bars in Legazpi.

Welcome 94.7 Spirit FM Legazpi!!!:banana::banana:

It looks much better than those low-tech billboards on Quezon Avenue. We need a few more around the city.

Media meet on climate change

11/24/2011

The provincial government of Albay through its Center for Initiatives and Research on Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) and the Climate Change Academy of the Bicol University host on Nov. 24 to 26 this year the Philippine Media Conference on Climate Change Adaptation in partnership with 11 other national government agencies, international organizations and private institutions in Legazpi City. President Aquino will keynote the media event and inaugurate the newly established Climate Change Academy of the Bicol University in Legazpi City. The academy, organized by CIRCA, is the first ever facility in the country and in Asia that offers specialized course on climate change and adaptation. Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, the brains behind the initiative, said the conference aims to promote vital public awareness on climate vulnerabilities and extremes in development, and highlight the need to accelerate the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the local level. The media summit, Salceda added, seeks to advocate the use of science-based analytical and planning tools on Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), provide updates on MDG Achievement Fund:1656, as well as identify new viable partnerships that will help address the deleterious concerns relative to climate change.

PNR to reach Albay by end of November
By Rey M. Nasol
Bicol Mail (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2011/nov24/xend.html)

GUINOBATAN, Albay – The province of Albay particularly its capital city of Legazpi is expecting the resumption of trips of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) by the end of this year, according to Albay Gov. Joey Salceda.

Salceda told this writer that PNR general manager Junio Ragragio has assured him through a letter dated October 24 that he is one with the governor in the resumption of the PNR line connecting Legazpi, the rest of Albay and Manila.

“Please be advised that the spate of typhoons slamming through the Bicol region had affected our efforts and given rise to more challenges in the efforts to rehabilitate the tracks in Albay,” Ragragio said in the letter.

Both Salceda and Ragragio are eagerly anticipating the reopening of the PNR operations in Legazpi City for further economic turnaround in the province.

Ragragio said that the PNR is exerting great effort to overcome these difficulties and meet the November deadline. “I’m confident that I should be able to get an exploration train through the Travesia Bridge and on to Legazpi by the end of November. Assuming this, the PNR should be undertaking trial train service to Legazpi this December.”

This is better while we anticipate for the construction of the city museum right there. It decreases the burden of unsightness.

The old public market in centro should be utilized now. It's a waste of money for that very economic area. I think the city government lost millions of money because of the unusefulness of that lot. Is it 15 years now?! Now, I'm not wishing for a mall in that area, I agree with a park. But if it is a mall, better!:)

Puregold opens in Legazpi
Bicol Mail (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2011/nov24/xopens.html)

LEGAZPI CITY—Wholesale and retail giant Puregold Price Club, Inc. has opened another supermarket in Embarcadero de Legazpi, Bicol region’s premier seafront lifestyle hub.

Located at the ground floor of the mall, Puregold is now ready to serve the Bicolanos with its cheaper products at big discounts.

Puregold offers fresh items, grocery food, health and beauty items, home essentials and fashion apparels.

Puregold Embarcadero opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m.

Puregold is known nationwide for its exciting treats like “Be a Puregold Lucky Shopper Promo” and “Aling Puring’s Tindahan Mo, Asenso Mo” program.

Its retail stores are strategically located across Metro Manila and Regions III, IV, CAR.

True to its commitment of giving its customers a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, Embarcadero Land Ventures, Inc., owner of Embarcadero de Legazpi, has chosen Puregold owing to its unparalleled service policy of providing above par customer service, aside from its low-priced merchandise, good assortment and wholesale program.

Puregold is an ideal destination for resellers where they can purchase what they need at the right quantity, price and time.

Company data show that the retail industry in the country contributes significantly to the national economy, accounting for roughly 15 percent of the Philippines’ total gross national product (GNP) and 33 percent of the entire services sector.

The industry employs some 5.25 million people, representing a significant 18 percent of the country’s work force, which means roughly 2 of every 10 workers are employed in the retail industry.

Puregold’s entry in Embarcadero de Legazpi has made the seafront commercial center livelier.

Embarcadero de Legazpi redeems the glory days of the Legazpi City port district, which was once the region’s melting pot of economic activity as Spanish trading galleons used to dock in it.

It has opened its doors to new investments—bringing in stores and brands that had never found their way to this coastal city before—and giving out job opportunities for the locals.

More than a venue for shopping, dining and entertainment, Embarcadero is home to one-of-a-kind adventure sports, like a 350-meter zipline from a lighthouse and kart racing.

Soon to rise at Embarcadero is a 90-foot-high skywalk to give a breathtaking view of the Albay Gulf, the cityscape, and the world-famous Mayon Volcano.

Embarcadero also has an affordable classy hotel--the Ellis Ecotel, sports shops, themed indoor amusement center and a host of branded specialty boutiques.

Electronic tricycles are also available for rent. Floreno G. Solmirano, contributor

Search on for Albay’s brightest students
By Rey M. Nasol

LEGAZPI CITY --- The provincial government of Albay, determined to produce a graduate in every family, is keen on finding who will represent it in the regional, national and even overseas academic competitions regardless of whether such representative would come from the urban or rural community of the province.

Last year, access to modern technology such as the Internet, Wi-Fi zones and multifunction cell phones in urban centers did not make the students of Albay fare better than those who only have the sound of crickets to hear in far-flung barrios or barangays.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda recently launched “Karangahan nin Dunong kan Albay” Academic Competition 2011, which will make winners as local academic celebrities, awash in cash prizes and other incentives.

Aleco sets general assembly Nov. 30
By Florencio P. Narito
Bicol Mail (http://www.bicolmail.com/issue/2011/nov24/xsets.html)

LEGAZPI CITY --- The management of Albay Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Aleco) has called on all bona fide member-consumers of the cooperative to a Special Membership General Assembly set at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 30, 2011 at the Bicol College Gymnasium in Daraga, Albay.

The assembly will tackle the following agenda:

1) Report on the implementation of the Special Payment Arrangement (SPA) with the Philippine Electricity Marketing Corporation (PEMC) approved last May 14, 2011.

2) The current situation of Aleco which has incurred almost P 3 billion in debts.

3) The heavy indebtedness to power suppliers like the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM) Corporation, the PEMC and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) and other creditors.

4) High systems loss (about 19-22%) and inadequate substation capacity.

5) High exposure of 40% to spot market will destroy the power rate.

6) Management proposals: a) Management officers for Aleco; b) Ratification of proposal to create an interim board of directors that will be authorized to act for the coop.

Majority of the members of the Crisis Committee, headed by Bishop Joel Baylon of the Diocese of Legazpi, the Multisectoral Coalition headed by lawyer Bart Rayco, and the Aleco rank and file led by Noel Cantal, have continued to register their opposition to the planned privatization of Aleco.

The location of Puregold in EM is favorable because the goods are docked right away from the ship. Their prices are really cheap. EM is much better now!

Business in the city is vibrant. Almost all here in Legazpi. No need to travel!

I have not heard of any further plans except that they're thinking of turning it into a parking area with stores and linear parks. But that's almost 3 or 4 years ago. I guess there must be something blocking the city from developing the said lot because if not, they would have done so in no time. Look at the new boulevard, it was nonexistent just over two years ago!

But I prefer this suggestion, by our very own forumer joks. A HUGE PARK!

I second joks and dex - we need an impressive central square or park - a nice civic space for all citizens - instead of another box-like mall/warehouse. It would enhance the attractiveness of the old CBD and afford a clear view of Mayon.

It's only a proposal and it's not yet official but according to the source, it's seaside so it's probably somewhere along the coastal boulevard. I just hope they make it official, we need public art like this. Not the traditional type of bulky and unwieldy 'monumento' or 'rebulto' that we're used to seeing in the Philippines, but something more modern, sleeker and aspirational. Something that will inspire a new generation of Legazpeños to dream bigger and aim higher. :okay:

Yes, the old buildings of the city are eyesores, especially the ones inspired by '70s brutalist architecture - drab, grey, unclad concrete hehehe

:okay:

I agree with you! For me a single park full of trees is worth a hundred SM malls.

Yup, it's time for the city to say good bye to those grey old eyesores! We are gradually seeing an architectural transformation with new, contemporary designs, which will hopefully extend to the old CBD.

I agree, a square with trees and grass, plus some fountains or other water features - as I suggested in the previous page, it could be called the Legazpi Pentagon - a relaxing oasis of calm in the middle of the city. :okay:

Exactly. This kind of central park will encourage the owners of those buildings to renovate and refurbish them. It will be far more effective in attracting tourists than another rectangular building on a corner.

Remember, most world famous cities have at least one renowned square or park: NY - Times Square, London- Trafalgar Square, Rome - the Trevi Fountains, Beijing's Tiannanmen Square etc...etc...

Closed na yadi for operation, seems renovation will start soon , perhaps?

It's nice for the city facelifting those old buildings, look, Baguio City are doing facelifting those old buildings at the Session Road, all glasses, just like those glass buildings at Makati, Global City and all high rise buildings in Manila.

Why not the City Government call for a meeting with businessmen and help hand in hand for the total facelift of those old buildings .

Can an LGU make an Executive Order on that particular aspect of improving the cities old buildings?

PNoy inaugurates Climate Change Academy in Albay …first in the country, first in the world

LEGAZPI CITY, November 25 (PIA) -- President Benigno C. Aquino III led today the inauguration of the Climate Change Academy of Albay for Local Government Units (CCA-LGUs) that will serve as a venue for development of competencies in climate change adaptation through research and training for local climate and disaster risk management policy development, integration, training and mainstreaming in the Philippines. ...The country’s first CCA-LGUs came about following years of painstaking efforts of developing an institution as Albay’s, as well as the country’s, response and adaptation measure in a bid to ease the adverse impact of global warming resulting in climate change and extreme weather events. ...“Ang Climate Change Academy is the first of its kind in the world. Wala pa pong ganyan sa buong mundo (There is nothing like that in the whole world). It’s essentially a knowledge management institution,” Salceda said.

Aquino inaugurates Climate Change Academy of Albay

November 26, 2011 12:59 am

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 25 — President Benigno S. Aquino III inaugurated Friday the Climate Change Academy of Albay as part of the government thrust to combat climate change and its ill-effects, particularly on the economy.

The Climate Change Academy, built inside the campus of the Bicol University in Legazpi City, is aimed at contributing to the national effort to fast-track the development of climate adaptation capabilities of the country, particularly local government units (LGUs).

The academy empowers and trains LGUs for disaster risk management, evaluation of climate risk hazards and adaptive capabilities, planning, and programming.

It is also expected to provide guidelines on experimental learning in the implementation of “disaster proofing” of local stakeholders.

The academy’s strategic approach includes raising awareness on disaster risks, progressive training on scenario building, climate and disaster risk assessment and management, and technical assistance for local management and planning.

Recently, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda underscored the importance of institutionalizing the fight against climate change through the academy as well as raising public awareness with the help of media.

“Ang Climate Change Academy is first of its kind in the world, wala pa pong ganyan sa buong mundo. It’s essentially a knowledge management institution,” Salceda said.

Given the vulnerability of the Philippines, being the third most vulnerable country in the world, Salceda said battling or reducing the impacts of climate change is a paramount concern of the government.

Countries that sent students to the Climate Change Academy of Albay include Laos, Myanmar, Kenya, Nepal and many others, Salceda said.

The provincial government of Albay worked with other government agencies and international organizations in putting up the Climate Change Academy.

Its partners include the Climate Change Commission, the United Nations System in collaboration with the Philippine government, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR);

Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of National Defense (DND), Bicol University, University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB), International Center for Agroforestry (ICRAF), and University of Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. (PNA)

Aquino sets aim, readies trigger against Bicol big-time trawlers

LEGAZPI CITY: President Benigno Aquino 3rd gave marching orders to the maritime police and Philippine Coast Guard in Bicol to intensify operations against big-time illegal fishing activities across the region.
Aquino’s directive came Friday following the complaints of nine prelates in Bicol who earlier wrote a letter of appeal to the President asking his intervention to put a stop to the massive illegal fishing activities of commercial fishers in two major fishing grounds in the western seaboard of Bicol— Ragay Gulf and Burias Pass.

The letter of appeal was signed by Archbishops Leonardo Legazpi, Archdiocese of Caceres, Joey “Bong” Z. Baylon of the Diocese of Legazpi, Jose C. Sorra, Bishop Emeritus of Legazpi, Lucilo B. Quiambao, auxiliary prelate Emeritus of Legazpi, Jose Rojas Jr. of Diocese of Libmanan, Arturo M. Bastes, Diocese of Sorsogon, Gilbert A. Carcera of Diocese of Daet and Manolo A. De Los Santos of Diocese of Virac and Jose Batolo of the Dioces of Masbate.

The Bicol bishops condemned local authorities in Bicol as the massive operations of the illegal commercial fishing activities in Bicol’s western seaboard are taking place with impunity under the noses of public officials and enforcers here.

“We’re tasking the Philippine Coast Guard and Maritime police to strengthen their operations to go against the illegal fishers. We need also the help and cooperation of the public to apprehend these trawlers,” Aquino told The Manila Times during the press conference here.

Aquino flew in Legazpi City on Friday morning to grace the opening of Asia’s first Climate Change Academy of the Provincial Government of Albay through Center for Initiative Research Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) as governor Joey Salceda’s vital program for climate change mitigation and adaptation measures to fight the adverse impact of global warming that triggers climate change.

The President also said that to address the illegal fishing activities in Bicol the people should work together and cooperate with the government’s authorities to apprehend the persons involved in trawl fishing.

Albay governor Joey Salceda who also expressed his concern on the plight of the marginalized fisher folk in the coastal villages in towns of Oas, Pioduran and Ligao City created the task force against illegal fishing chaired by Board Member Arnold Embestro.

Aquino admitted that that law enforcers could not thoroughly cover the sea waters of the country specifically in Bicol due to limited resources and mobility.

The President also lauded the action of Bicol prelates against the operations of big-time illegal fishers continuously raping Bicol waters for several decades.

The law that prohibits commercial fishing within 15-kilometer of municipal waters have been disregarded by commercial fishers with connection to high ranking officials of the government according to the Bicol bishops.

The ban on commercial fishing within municipal waters is mandated in RA 8550, the Fisheries Code of the Philippines.

The prelates asked President Aquino to immediately enforce the law banning all commercial fishers in Ragay Gulf and Burias Pass.

The prelates lamented that the commercial fishers shamelessly thieving from the municipal waters where the small fishers are gravely affected which cause serious marine depletion and high prevalence of poverty.

At least 237, 053 poor families living along Burias pass and Ragay Gulf belong to the poorest municipalities in Bicol per poverty mapping research in 2006.

Countries that sent students to the Climate Change Academy of Albay include Laos, Myanmar, Kenya, Nepal and many others, Salceda said.

The provincial government of Albay worked with other government agencies and international organizations in putting up the Climate Change Academy.

Its partners include the Climate Change Commission, the United Nations System in collaboration with the Philippine government, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR);

Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of National Defense (DND), Bicol University, University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB), International Center for Agroforestry (ICRAF), and University of Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
