PUREGOLD Price Club Inc. beefed up its store network with the scheduled opening of its 100th store in Taguig City on Monday.
The new store will be located at Gen. A. Luna Street corner Col. P. Cruz Street in Barangay Tuktukan, beside the Taguig City Hall, the supermarket chain operator said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Puregold considers the newest store as a “milestone in its continuing expansion and development.”

Puregold earlier revealed plans to open 38 branches this year, raising its store network to 100 by yearend. It plans to open at least 25 stores in 2012, half of which will be opened in the affluent cities in the Visayas and Mindanao, marking its expansion beyond Luzon.

Another 25 stores should be rolled out in 2013 to bring its network to 150 stores.

In September, Puregold raised P7.5 billion from an initial public offering to pay down debt and finance its store expansion.

From 2011 to 2013, the grocery chain will expand its store network in Davao, Rizal, Cavite, Bataan, Pangasinan, Baguio City, Ilocos Norte, Caloocan, Bulacan, Camarines Sur, Laguna, Quezon City, Legaspi City, Iloilo City, Leyte, Cebu City, Tarlac City, La Union and Albay.

Puregold largely caters to the broad C and resellers market, accounting for 65 percent and 35 percent of its market. It serves over 2 million households and 170,000 small entrepreneurs. Buoyed by its store expansion, Puregold had said its profit could double to P1.6 billion this year from P750 million in 2010.

At end-September, Puregold reported a 185 percent jump in net income to P1.08 billion from P379 million in the same period last year as revenues surged because of its rapid store expansion.
Its shares rose to P17.66 on Friday from P17.02 each on Thursday.

Kudos to Puregold Embarcadero! Well accepted and appreciated in Albay!:applause: More to come!

Only 5 firecracker injuries in Albay versus 27 in 2010; Gov cites ‘Iwas Paputok’ campaign a huge success

The Albay provincial government scored impressively in its ‘Iwas Paputok’ campaign with only five reported minor injuries blamed on firecrackers during the holiday revelries.

For a province with 15 towns and three cities, and over two million people – the 20th most populous province in the country according to Wikipedia – a report of five people injured in a traditionally riotous and explosive New Year revelry is quite incredible, observers here noted.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda said the further reduction in the number of firecracker injuries, from last year’s 27 cases to only five this year, was pimarily due to the massive “Iwas Paputok” campaign of the province. The drive forms a part of Albay’s Green Christmas celebration, dubbed as Karangahan Festival.

The campaign runs along with the ‘Zero Casualty’ goal of the province during disasters, a term coined by Salceda and which is now a widely accepted and practiced principle of a good number of local government’s disaster risk reduction (DRR) program.

“While ‘five’ is not ‘zero’ still this achievement translates ropughly to 47% reduction in firecrackers used in celebrating the New Year. The economic benefits are estimated at P14 million savings”, Salceda noted.

Albay’s ‘Karangahan’ Green Christmas has two basic components: Karangahan, represented by Fiesta Culinaria, Beer Plaza and Trade Fair; and Green Christmas bannered by ‘Walang Plastikan,’ a campaign against the use of plastic bags, and ‘Iwas Paputok’ which seeks to discourage the use of firecrackers in celebrating the new year.

“In 2010, we started only with Green Christmas but in 2011, we added Karangahan as an affirmative element – be nice and enjoy Karangahan. This contrasts with the negative message – don’t be naughty in Green Christmas – since Christmas is essentially a positive season,” Salceda explained.

Quoting Albay PNP Provincial Director, Senior Supt. William S. Macavinta’s report, Salceda said the cities of Tabaco, Ligao and Legazpi accounted for one each of the five injured, while the other two were from Daraga town.

The governor vowed to exert all efforts for a totally no-injury holidays next new year.

Kung Camella yan, fine! It's still a business for Legazpi. Proper urban planning is my concern.

That's beyond my scope. Maybe the other forumers knew better. But as a citizen, I'm praying for proper drainage. However it does.

One thing I noticed in Legazpi last Christmas is that, eventhough the people were everywhere, the traffic is still manageable. You won't get angry that much, it could be due to bigger sidewalks and lanes that we have in Legazpi. That's one thing I'm proud about Legazpi City. I CAN BREATH!

our long wait MAY be over
dahil sa pakikinig ko kanina sa radyo (iniinterview si councilor Rolly Rosal), I just learned that the "eyesore" in the city is owned by LCC pala. Legazpi Puericulture Center's operation is until the end of the month na lang daw to give way to whatever LCC will construct there
BUT, kung walang gagawin ang LCC, then the City government will take over

Ha talaga?!!! Siguro kang kakareklamo ko, nabasa nila:lol::lol::lol::lol:....

Now, LCC naman bantayan ta! It's time for LCC to prove to us that they have the balls! Nakapagawa nga ng mga malls all over Bicol, ining more-than-life na business ayaw nila...Kung dae kaya kan LCC give it to Legazpi City ta mabilis ang aksyon!:ohno: (Kung sa SM yan mapaduman tapos kaagad yan...)

Well, prove to us LCC that you deserve that lot.

Wake-up call kaagad ang kailangan kan LCC. Legazpi City is a premier city, so tamang hinahamon ang LCC ng kumilos agad. Give that lot to the city, SM o Robinsons tapos kaagad yan! Remember, millions or billions of pesos slept with that lot! grrrrrrr:ohno::ohno::ohno::ohno:

Kung Camella yan, fine! It's still a business for Legazpi. Proper urban planning is my concern.

It was announced by CA Rosal, the relocation of squatters in the city to give way for the dredging and improvement of canals around the city starting this year, dapat siguro, paiwason pa an mga canal and plant trees along .

Anyway, whatever that's still good considering the air traffic that Legazpi makes. It depends on the market need kasi. Correct me if I'm wrong, Legazpi is next to Manila in Luzon's air travel traffic?...
may correct ka...may wrong din...happy new year ms megz!

So third busiest nga ang Legazpi in Luzon Island. Bumaba ranking nya from 13th in 2009 to 15th in 2010. Pero tumaas naman ang fugures. Surely it will increase in 2011 because of the additional flights.

Impeachment court to issue gag order on Jan. 16
Philippine Daily Inquirer
12:53 am | Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Senator Francis Escudero. INQUIRER file photo
LEGAZPI CITY—The Senate, acting as an impeachment court, will issue a gag order to the prosecution and defense panels to prevent them from giving information to the media that can sow intrigues and muddle public opinion on the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, chairman of the Senate justice committee, said the first order of business at the start of the trial in the Senate on January 16 would be for him to ask Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile to issue the gag order.
“I think it is about time that we stop washing and throwing dirty linen in public and calling each other names,” Escudero said.
Escudero, at a press conference here on December 28 during the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas-Albay induction ceremonies, said the Senate impeachment court would control, prevent and not allow any statements issued by any party to the media that would affect the merits of the case.
Escudero, quoting Enrile, said the Senate court would not also allow any sort of walkout, crying and dancing, which happened during the impeachment trial of then President Joseph Estrada 11 years ago. Mar S. Arguelles, Inquirer Southern Luzon

Social media to fuel DOT's new campaign
Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines – The year 2012 marks the kickoff of the tourism department's newest campaign, which aims to boost the tourism industry and lure 10 million tourists into the Philippines by 2016. Freshly appointed Tourism Secretary Ramon "Mon" Jimenez is heading the much-awaited campaign, which is centered on one fundamental idea: social media.

Read more (http://www.rappler.com/nation/685-social-media-to-fuel-dot-s-new-campaign)

I'm thrilled that the DOT is embracing social media and crowdsourcing as the centerpiece of its new tourism campaign. Crowdsourcing is exactly what we've been doing here in this forum for the past seven years.

The Legazpi & Albay thread started by Neil (@olineil) in 2005 has gathered Albayanos from all walks of life and from different parts of the world, all eager to contribute something: from simple snapshots to complex discussions of current events. That's the concept of crowdsourcing: gathering people to contribute and share.

With the phenomenal rise of social media in the last 2-3 years, Legazpi forumers have also adapted: we now have several very successful Facebook pages devoted to Albay such as Albay Rising (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Albay-Rising/160977507255358), Pading Romy (https://www.facebook.com/PadingRomy), Legazpi City (https://www.facebook.com/legazpicity), Daraga, Albay (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Daraga-Albay/126136804069054), Tabaco City (https://www.facebook.com/TabacoCity), etc., all founded and maintained by SSC forumers.

I'm so proud of what we have accomplished and I'm looking forward to greater things we can still achieve!

That could be better than an SM mall. Most cities dream of having an SM mall; that's so last century.

Let's not be like most cities. We should aim higher: let's dream that the next successful chain of malls in the Philippines will originate from Albay. And I think LCC is on the right track.

Hala, nilait lait natin , because of the eye sore scenario at the middle of the city, but now , heto na......it's a miracle.....kaya naman pala, may plano na sila, comparable to other malls in metro manila with high rise buildings as condos, now it's a hotel, complete...perhaps lcc management just have first a wait and see attitude to the sprouting malls all over the country and they make their own pasabog, much better than other box type malls. I salute still LCC, if this will be done the soonest and really appreciated lcc, for opening LCC Malls all over Bicol resulted to reduction of unemployment rate.....and an Albayano conglomerate. This is really competitive as in , you are at Global City

You're right Joks! Dapat may linear parks on both sides of the boulevard. Buffer zone man in case of storm surges. The development should be in the higher elevations. I don't want to see too many establishments along the boulevard.

Bicol business community sees PPP to flourish this year

January 5, 2012 1:04 am
By Danny O. Calleja

Businessmen in Bicol are looking forward this year to a thriving trade prospect in the region inspired by a flourishing opportunity anchored on the vision of public-private partnership (PPP).
Aimed at boosting the public sector’s ability to promote and carry out successful infrastructure projects that will, in turn, provide better services to citizens and contribute to inclusive economic growth, the PPP program is the cornerstone of the Aquino administration’s Philippine Development Plan 2011-2016, which aims to achieve “inclusive,” high-level growth.
The Plan’s infrastructure development program will support the performance of the country’s economic sectors and ensure equitable access to infrastructure services, especially as these affect the people’s health, education, and housing.
Toward these ends, the government will accelerate the provision of safe, efficient, reliable, cost–effective and sustainable infrastructure.
According to the Plan, the huge investment requirements of the infrastructure sector, coupled with the government’s need to observe fiscal discipline, means that government shall tap the private sector for the financing, construction, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of major infrastructure in high-priority areas, such as transportation, power and water.
In a statement on Wednesday, Phillip Imperial, president of the Metro Naga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI) said they are confident that the upcoming year will be another venue of growth and development in as so far as business venture and linkages in Bicol are concerned.
He said that the chamber has forged various agreements with different agencies in line with President Benigno Aquino III’s directive on PPP that recognizes the need to improve the systems and capacity for preparing bankable PPPs. “We are responding to the government’s program on expanding PPPs to address infrastructure gaps,” Imperial said.
The MNCCI, he said had also entered into a covenant for good governance and memorandum of cooperation that bind various agencies in a commitment of service and cooperation in pursuance of the mutual endeavor for socio-economic development.
The Chamber is behind the annual holding of the Bicol Business Week here which has proven to be an excellent venue for national and local investors, exhibitors, and business enthusiasts. It showcased not only products but also technologies, services and business prospects and helped in strengthening the foothold of various businesses in the growing regional market.
Imperial said they will abide by the national government’s campaign to get rid of corruption and will adhere to the template of good governance as mandated by law.
Among other things, MNCCI is also strongly seeking President Aquino’s approval to renew the Philippine National Railways’ (PNR) corporate charter which is due to expire this 2013.
The railways, they believe, is vital tool for the promotion of local business and in forging important networks with future business endeavors. Regular train trips between Manila and this city down to Polangui, Albay popularly known as Bicol Express have resumed late last year following the completion of the rehabilitation of the railway line on the route.
“MNCCI will continue to live by its mission of providing a good business environment for the socio- economic development of Naga City and its adjoining municipalities in the Bicol Region,” Imperial stressed.
Albay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) president Francisco Yap agreed with the Imperial’s group saying in Legazpi City alone, the PPP program is serving as the take-off point of fresh developments particularly the establishment of the New Legazpi Urban District (NLUD) in a vast property along the northern coastal and upland sections of the city.
NLUB is a grand infrastructural development package being undertaken by city government under Mayor Geraldine Rosal that gives way to PPP initiatives that when completed by this year would offer more spaces for the expanding business and commercial district of the city which has grown into an investment haven for local, national and foreign investors, Yap said.
“This development would certainly boost the economic growth of the Legazpi City, Albay and all the other neighboring cities and provinces of Bicol,” Yap added. (PNA)

METRO LEGAZPI: THE BEST IS YET TO COME!!!:banana::banana:

With the steady guidance and planning of our local officials na fortunately are very efficient in what they are doing, expect Legazpi City and Albay to come out as an economic powerhouse in the country. LCC has already incorporated into its mall concept the ensuring tourism and BPO boom in the city. With the completion of the international airport din and the full optimum use of the future seaport, expect Legazpi to corner a very large chunk of the tourist traffic and the investment inflows as well. Everything is looking sunny talaga in Albay and Legazpi City and the planned investments dwarf those in other areas.:banana::banana:

Sana rin 2012 will bring about the resolution in Albay for cheaper electricity rates and more returns for the local government in the billions of revenues that the mining companies generate.

Thank you Mr. Eugene Sangil, the business consultant from Jaucian Village.....:applause::applause::applause:

Tapos na kaya su kaso kan LCC with the city? The last time I talked to Romy Tan last December when I bumped into him in Rustans, mukhang malabo pa. This is a nice project though. But it will make the Port District even more congested. But anyway, they should just put more greens to make it more environment friendly but at the same time pleasing to the eye.

Belated Happy New Year to everyone.

With proper planning i think the congestion problem should be a minor problem.

“Looking at the academy, we can proudly say that this is the product of the sweat of our brows,” aniya Rangasa.

Daraga is tops region-wide in terms of locally-sourced income. Local income comes from local taxes like real property tax and business taxes and the income from LGUs' economic enterprises.

Kudos also to Polangui, Guinobatan, Camalig, Rapu-Rapu and Libon for making it to the top 20.

Wow! Daraga is miles away from the rest. Daraga should be the next city in Bicol ASAP! It's too humble just to be a town!:ohno:

The ironic thing is Daraga's locally sourced income ranks 4th among all LGUs in Bicol behind Naga (P252,213,789.00), Legazpi (P180,563,827.00) and Sorsogon (P93,144,,246.94). It made more than the smaller cities like Tabaco (P49,696,454.11), Iriga (P46,493,614.65), Masbate (P43,363,843.20) and Ligao (P34,748,395.88)

It should have already been a city if not for the amendment in the Local Government Code that raised the minimum requirement for locally sourced income form P20 million to P100 million for a town to be a city. The cities of Tabaco, Masbate and Ligao became cities before this amendment was done.

Yup head and shoulders above the rest! Maybe Daraga's LGU is waiting for the new census before filing an application for city status? After all, they need the latest stats to confirm both population and income levels.

So according to your source Legazpi's income from tax receipts is nearly 1 billion. I wonder why it's so different to the LGPMS figure of Php 541,410,368.00? Unless the latter figure is actually data from 2009 but only reported in 2010, and the BIR's figures are more recent?

this is a perfect example of what the Legazpi boulevard future development should be. buildings should be far from the coastline separated by a landscape. this place is almost similar to our city:)
http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu144/joks25/boulevard.jpg

This is a nice find, joks! You're right, the topography is very similar to Legazpi's. That is probably how the city would look once its population reaches at least 1 million, thereabouts.

Not only should there be more landscaping and better planning, but restrictions should be put in place so tall buildings can only be built in certain areas (where they don't obscure views of Mayon).

That's right. Proper planning must be observed. That picture is the exact opposite of NLUD.

At first glance I'm a little bit frightened about the design of NLUD since the buildings are too near to the sea. Anyway in the next few weeks or months we will see some developments with this NLUD. And the 2 malls, I'm excited what could be them!!!:banana::banana:

BIR statistics pertains to the actual collection per revenue district. Each province in bicol has one districg except for cam sur which has two, iriga and naga. The collection per district does not necessarily reflect the income of the LGU itself but the towns/city that are within its scope. The Daet office collection for example refers to the collection for the whole of Cam norte as of june 30,2010.

They are 2 entirely different figures. BIR taxes go to the coffers of the national government while the LGPMS figures are the local income sources of each LGU. May power na mag collect fees. Example is the real property tax, permit fees like bldg permits and business permits. Aside from these, the LGU also has economic enterprises like the public market and community college. Daraga for example has Cagsawa Park and Resort where it earns a significant income from the entrance fees and rentals.

It only means, Albay deserves the infrastructure and any help from national government since we spend and pay well.:)

The purchasing power is getting higher from a recent article. Not only Legazpi City but the whole province.

Daraga + Legazpi comprise Metro Legazpi. But then, when you're in this city you won't tell which is which.

But, is 1 hectare too small for a mall? Ang Bichara Mall ba ay 1 hectare or less? Can anyone give us an idea how large a 1 hectare is?

CIRCA ends 2011 with a blast

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 7 (PIA) –- The Center for Initiatives and Research on Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) bids goodbye to a fruitful 2011 as they release their Top 25 achievements for the year.
Considered as one of the biggest projects ever launched is the inauguration of the Climate Change Academy last November 25 beside the BU Graduate School which, according to CIRCA director Nong Rangasa, is the prize of unwavering belief to deliver service amidst drawbacks, meager wages, and lots of frustrations especially when they lack the needed logistical support.
“Looking at the academy, we can proudly say that this is the product of the sweat of our brows,” Rangasa added.
Together with the inauguration of the CCA building is the 1st National Media Conference on Climate Change Adaptation, with both events graced by President Benigno Aquino III.
Officials of 100 barangays comprising the municipalities of Manito, Bacacay, and Rapu-Rapu were taught on how to come up with barangay contingency plans. Likewise, the trainers themselves received training from the Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in preparation for the mainstreaming of climate change integration into the school curriculum of Albay and Bicol Region.
Partnership with various government and non-government units in both local and international levels such as the United Nations System and League of provinces, cities, and municipalities of the Philippines were also established through summits, assemblies, and fora conducted in 2011.
Nevertheless, Rangasa said that the challenge now is how to surpass their 2011 achievements. Following this, plans are being laid down for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
Motivated by CIRCA’s renewed hope and enthusiasm, Albay can continue to be of service not only to the province but to the entire country as well, Rangasa furthered. (MAL/SAA-PIA V/Albay)

Albay sends med, Watsan team to CDO, Iligan
By Mar S. Arguelles

LEGAZPI CITY --- Albay has dispatched on Wednesday a WATSAN (Water and Sanitation) and medical team to the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan the hardest hit areas by Typhoon Sendong in Northern Mindanao provinces, Albay gov. Joey Salceda said on Wednesday.
Salceda in an email message said the Albay-OCD Watsan and Medical team is composed of 96 medical, sanitary and security personnel including a water liquefying machine.
The team left this city at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and will enplane for CDO and Iligan on Thursday.
Another team composed of sanitation personnel and water purifying machine proceeded to Pasacao Port and boarded a Philippine Navy vessel BRP Antonio Luna bound for CDO.
The medical team with four doctors and 14 nurses led by Dr. Luis Mendoza, Albay Provincial Health Officer, will assist disaster and health authorities in CDO and Iligan in providing post disaster health intervention services.
The WATSAN team with 17 members led by Sanitary Engr. William Sabater of DOH, will operate and distribute water to residents that badly need potable water in the two cities in Mindanao.
The water purifying machine can produce 33,000 liters of potable water per hour.
Salceda said the overall strategy of Team Albay was patterned after the WATSAN and Medical services interventions in Isabela, Iloilo during typhoon Frank, and Bagong Silangan, Quezon City when it was hit by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
The 118-man team will render service for 15 days from December 23 this year to January 7, 2012.
Team Albay-OCD is a joint undertaking composed of the province disaster and health service personnel, OCD, DOH, BRTTH-HEMS, Philippine Navy, Army and Air Force.
