Needs help...looking for historians, old local people who can tell a story knows about the Camalig Church (St. John the Baptist Parish Church), citing the church participation and happenings during the American and Japanese Period Wars (1900-1945). Such relative infos will be documented (video) for submission to National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) one of the requirements in declaring the place as historical landmark. If you know one, kindly post their names, contact numbers and address...thanks! ~ Camalig Tourism (https://www.facebook.com/camalig.tourism)

Here's the complete news:

Tourist arrival in Albay up by 44%

by Sally A. Atento
LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 7 (PIA) –- Tourism Bicol regional director Susan Ravanilla has affirmed the impressive growth rate of tourist arrivals in Albay from January to June 2011 which so far is the highest in the past years.
Tourist arrivals in Albay has considerably increased to 234,081 tourists in 2011 compared to 162,506 in the same period in 2010 paving the way to a 44 percent growth as compared to the previous year.
Tied up with the 44 percent boost in the number of tourist arrivals is the 51 percent growth in foreign revenues for the first and second quarter of 2011, from P122 million revenues for 2010 to P180 million generated.
This growth also generated 836, 623 jobs for the 1st quarter of 2011.
According to Ravanilla, the first two quarters of the year were actually the peak season that’s why most tourists arrived at these months.
The people are the direct beneficiaries of this tourism boost,” the director furthered.
Most of the foreign visitors were from the United States followed by visitors from the United Kingdom which also comprised the biggest tourist arrival rate in Sorsogon.
Ravanilla also said that Donsol contributed a lot to the tourism growth rate in Albay since their foreign visitors usually stayed in this city for accommodation, bar hopping, shopping, and other stuff that they can try and enjoy.
Also boosting the number of tourist arrivals in Albay is Albay’s month long Magayon Festival in April including the nightly beer plaza and presentations at Albay Park and other festivities and events that appealed to both domestic and foreign tourists.
From the median term development plan, the tourist arrival target for 2012 is 2million which was already achieved in 2010 and is expected to be surpassed in 2011. The challenge then for 2012 is to go beyond the said target, the DOT Bicol director said. (MAL/SAA-PIA V/Albay)

'Wow! Philippines better'
By Paolo Romero (The Philippine Star)
Updated January 07, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The new tourism slogan drew mixed reactions, with Eastern Samar Rep. Ben Evardone saying if he had his way, he would have just retained “Wow! Philippines.”

But Evardone, chairman of the House committee on public information, nevertheless welcomed yesterday the new tourism slogan launched by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

He, however, cited the need for the government to do more in promoting the country as a tourist destination.

Evardone described the new tourism logo and slogan, “It’s more fun in the Philippines,” as “simple, catchy, modern and nice.”

“The Department of Tourism should have added green and blue colors in the logo being the colors of Mother Nature. Although I would have preferred that we retained ‘Wow Philippines,’” Evardone said, referring to the previous slogan of the agency.

“But beyond slogan and logo, we as Filipinos have to unite in marketing and promoting our country in our own little way,” Evardone said.

“While we are making some progress in good governance, we have to work double time in combating criminality,” he said.

Evardone said the government must also undertake massive infrastructure improvements to include upgrading airports and building more roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ports and bridges.

“We also have to improve support services like immigration, customs and transportation services,” he said.

Sen. Loren Legarda said a new slogan alone is not enough to promote tourism in the country.

Legarda said the various problems such as peace and order and sanitation must also be addressed in order to give tourists a better experience when they come over.

“A new slogan is not enough. We must clean up our act. Meaning clean up our streets, esteros, bays, rivers...” Legarda said.

“Improving peace and order, eradicating sex tourism and trafficking. Tourism is a convergence of government and private sector efforts,” she added.

Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. echoed the statement of Legarda, saying the best marketing tool is word of mouth from the tourists that visit the country.

“Product before slogan,” Marcos said.

In the social media, the new campaign drew mixed reactions, with some commenting that it is very simple and lacking in impact.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda wrote on his Facebook account his take on the DOT’s newest country brand.

“Let us admit it. Very susceptible to pun (no pun intended) talaga ang ‘it’s more fun in the Philippines,’ Salceda said.

“It’s funny in the Philippines (nothing intrinsically wrong with that until it reminds you of the airport terminals, overtaxing taxis),” he added.

Salceda quoted one of the many suggested improvements to the new DOT slogan: “IMF-Philippines and only in reply to many people who think the slogan is too long.”

Or, “Have more fun in the Philippines,” but hastily added it reminds people about previous reports that “70 percent of tourists come for sex” in the country.

“But since it is the decision of DOT, let us just help in making it work and Albay will fully support it,” Salceda said.

Salceda cited his province has its own tourism slogan, “Beautiful Albay” or “Albay is beautiful” as their chosen tagline for market positioning.

“In Bicol, beautiful is Magayon and that is why we are building our image and event franchise by investing in Magayon Festival. Even the name of Mayon is from Magayon. And Mayon is the iconic symbol of the natural beauty of the Philippines, nothing comes close except Boracay when it was not yet commercially exploited,” Salceda said.

There were also comments on Twitter and Facebook that just like the previously shelved “Pilipinas Kay Ganda,” the new campaign was copied from a 1951 Swiss tourism poster, “It’s fun in Switzerland.”

The Swiss campaign found on a website selling vintage ads began circulating on the Web shortly after the unveiling of the new tourism brand.

Also through Twitter, Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez said the ad was just a “coincidence,” adding that the public should give the BBDO Guerrero advertising firm more credit for the new brand. - With Marvin Sy, Mayen Jaymalin, Marichu Villanueva

Albay’s ‘Iwas Paputok’ successful

Published : Sunday, January 08, 2012 00:00
Written by : People's Journal

LEGAZPI City – The albay provincial government scored in its “Iwas paputok” campaign with only five reported minor injuries blamed on firecrackers furing the holiday revelries.

The figure showed an 82 percent reduction compared to the 27 cases posted last year.

For a province with 15 towns and three cities, and over two million residents, an injury of merely five is incredible.

Governor Joey Salceda said the great reduction in the number of firecracker injuries was attributed to the massive “Iwaq Paputok” campaign of the provincial government.

The campaign is part of Albay’s Green Christmas celebration dubbed “Karangahan Festival.”

The campaign runs along with the “Zero Casualty” goal of the province during disasters.

“While ‘five’ is not ‘zero,’ still this achievement translates roughly to 47% reduction in firecracker injury during the New Year. The economic benefit is estimated at P14 million savings,” Salceda said.

We went there last December 21, 2011. They are still cleaning and flattening the land. Definitely it will be constructed soon since that is a DOTC and Philippine government priority project. Medyo slow lang si PNOY gumalaw, careful ba sa money. But sa sobrang pagtitipid there are so many projects that are left unfinished with his administration, buti na lang di ang SLIA 'cause if that will happen PNOY will get the worst retaliation from Albay and Sorsogon provinces. But then he can't do that for sure, he loves Albay no matter what and we have a very good governor.

;87243160']That could be better than an SM mall. Most cities dream of having an SM mall; that's so last century.

Let's not be like most cities. We should aim higher: let's dream that the next successful chain of malls in the Philippines will originate from Albay. And I think LCC is on the right track.

What I like most in this new lifestyle center are the BPOs. So, I think this should be prioritized by the city government too.

P500-m anti-flood plan readied for port district

LEGAZPI CITY—The Department of Public Works and Highways will undertake a P500-million flood control project at the port district, former mayor and now City Administrator Noel Rosal said....

‘‘As planned, we will repair first all the major dikes starting from Makabalo to Dapdap up to Albay, then to Tibo River to San Roque up to Cruzada. We will repair all dikes so that the flow of water is continuous,” he told Manila Standard, adding that the pumps will be activated during high tide.

According to experts, Legazpi Port District is located below sea level.

Rosal said one pumping station will be built in Barangay San Roque and the other in Barangay Baybay along Rizal Street....

“This is the biggest project given by the Aquino administration to Legazpi City and the only local government given P500 million by Malacańang before typhoon Sendong devastated Northern Mindanao,’’ Rosal said.

Rosal also said P20 million has been earmarked for the repair of the slaughterhouse and expansion of Albay public market, and P10 million to rehabilitate Imelda Park.

An invigorating blend of history, nature and modernity

Had the officers and the crewmen of the Manila-Acapulco galleons still been living today, most of them, if not all, would surely pay or wish to pay a visit to the Sula Channel in Bacacay, Albay, not only to reminisce their struggle for safety and temporary stay in the area during stormy days but also to relish its present breathtaking scenery and inspiring serenity.

Connecting Tabaco Bay and Albay Gulf, this placid channel used to be the safe haven of Spanish galleons during typhoons from 1565 to 1815. It still serves the same purpose for sea vessels plying the route along the Pacific Ocean at present.

Amid this historical background rises the Misibis Residential Resort in Barangay (village) Misibis in Cagraray Island, near the mouth of Sula Channel.

The Misibis Residential Resort is envisioned to be a reinvigorating second home away from home—a resort complex offering a fine fusion of nature’s simplicity and world-class amenities and facilities to its residents and guests. The project is a masterpiece in land development—planned and designed in line with the highest quality of international real estate conversion into meaningful use and environmental standards.

Asian tropical architecture

Home designs aim to mirror a modern Asian tropical architecture. Porches, balconies and garden terraces are envisaged to create a sense of grace while encouraging outdoor living. Thick, green foliage, assorted trees and broad palmettos add to the color and romance of the setting. Modern convenience and security are a priority and have been integrated into the development with utmost respect for the environment.

Families, beach lovers, artists, nature trippers and individuals looking for a perfect sanctuary can indeed make Misibis Residential Resort their second home in tourism-rich Albay.

Some 45 minutes’ drive by land from Legazpi across a stretch of countryside greenery dominated by coconut trees and winding concrete road, Misibis Residential Resort boasts of almost fine white sand and an irregular coastline stretching about three kilometers.

By sea, it is about 30-minute boat ride that gives one an excellent view of perfectly cone-shaped Mayon and white steam emissions at the Bacon-Manito Geothermal Plant atop a mountain. With this awesome view, the sea trip going to the place alone is already energizing and prepares one to a more exciting experience as the fastcraft cuts through the deep blue waters of Albay Gulf.

Albay’s tourist spots

Lot owners and guests who have the luxury of time for a wonderful sightseeing can enjoy some of Albay’s tourist spots in nearby towns.

Rapu-Rapu town has the Minaroso Caves where sea birds and swallows take refuge and the Pototan Cave in Batan Island, which provides a four-hour spelunking adventure. From here, one can proceed to Ilologan Beach, a long stretch of coral islands in Manito town. Also in Manito is the Nag-Aso Boiling Lake, a river with naturally heated water from beneath the earth.

Aside from Misibis Beach Waterfront Resort, Bacacay town boasts of Roca Baluarte, a fort-like formation transformed into a beach resort, and Sogod Beach, well-known for its enclaves of black sandy beaches shaded by towering coconut palms and lush vegetation. Cagraray Island alone offers several caves: Cagbulacao Cave, Malubago Cave, Misibis Cave, Buhi Cave and Mataas Cave.

A neighbor to Bacacay is the town of Malilipot where the Busay Falls rolls down a curtain of water about 800 feet high. It is considered as one of the highest waterfalls in the country owing to its seven-tiered cascading white foam.

Come to Misibis Residential Resort where the splendor of history, the music of modernity and the lullaby of nature blend into a spirit-regenerating harmony!

Hope lessons

I ended last year on a note of hope—and obviously I am not alone, since it seems that 95 percent of Filipinos feel the same way. I start this year on a similar note, by pointing out (crowing may be too much), or maybe reminding, that there indeed has been some small victories in the war against corruption, as indicated by Transparency International’s 2011 Corruption Perception Index (CPI).

Released December 2011, the CPI shows that on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is very corrupt and 10 is very clean, the Philippines had a score of 2.6. Now, don’t start scoffing. I am not clutching at straws here. This is an improvement on our 2010 CPI of 2.4; moreover, our ranking rose from 134th (out of 178 countries) in 2010 to 129th (out of 182) last year. Which means that while we were less corrupt (had a higher score) than 24 percent of the countries surveyed in 2010, we were less corrupt than 29 percent of the countries surveyed (and there were more countries, mind you) last year.

Another note of hope that we can start the year with is the selflessness and the spirit of cooperation shown by Albay Gov. Joey Salceda and his “Team Albay.” Although there are no doubt other acts of selflessness, I mention Team Albay because Joey gave a presentation yesterday at the annual fellowship lunch hosted by the National Statistical Coordination Board for the partners and advocates of the Philippine Statistical System. Salceda is a great speaker to start with, and he kept us laughing with his stories, but even if he were the most boring, the audience would still be spellbound, not by how he said it, but by what he said—and did.

The members of Team Albay—composed of the governor, four doctors, 20 nurses, a 35-person water/sanitation team and their 30,000 liter-an-hour water filtrating machine donated by the Spanish government, plus 10 gofers (when they go somewhere, they do not impose on their hosts, but do things for themselves), plus the crew of the ship that went from Albay to CDO, plus Armed Forces personnel from the area—have one thing in common: they are veterans of disasters (Albay is one of the most vulnerable, what with being in the typhoon path plus Mayon Volcano, plus exposure to the Pacific Ocean) and they know how to adapt/manage/mitigate (choose your term) disasters. Please understand that Albay has a record of zero casualties (except for 2006) in the many disasters it has had to deal with.

It turns out that Cagayan de Oro was already the fourth recipient of Albay aid. Team Albay had gone to Iloilo after Typhoon “Frank,” to Bagong Silangan, Quezon City and Cainta after “Ondoy,” and to Isabela after “Pepeng.” So they had their systems and procedures down pat, having learned from their experiences in Albay and all other areas they had been to.

What was extra special about Team Albay’s help to CDO, of course, was its members gave up Christmas and New Year with their own families to be with the victims of “Sendong.” They were in CDO from Dec. 22 to Jan. 5.

Hope Lesson No. 1 that was brought home to me: A province or an area doesn’t have to be rich to be an aid donor; Albay is in the bottom half of provinces in terms of average per capita income (2009 FIES). Arguably, technical assistance and moral and physical support are at least as important as financial aid.

The starting point of Salceda’s advocacy (for want of a better name) of disaster risk reduction/climate change adaptation is that those who have less in life are more at risk—and therefore the ultimate risk reduction tool is human development. And the risks have increased: the average number of disasters over the 10-year period 1994-2003 was 86; the five-year average number of disasters from 2004 to 2008 was 211.

Half a billion pesos worth of projects is a lot. I think this is the biggest project the local government of Legazpi City will undertake.

It's about time too! Legazpi needs this due to its vulnerable location. Preemptive, not reactive - that should be Albay's motto.

lets plant more trees! lets reforest huge parcel of our province! for our children...and our children's children!:cheers:

KUDOS TO TEAM ALBAY! Go! Go! Gov Salceda!

Yes! In fact, I'm somewhat disappointed that the rendering for the Forum won't feature any green areas, such as envisaged by one of our members here (I think it was Joks). We need more trees and green spaces in general, not just pure concrete developments.

P1-B for highway, road programs
By GENALYN D. KABILING
January 2, 2012, 1:48am

MANILA, Philippines — The government has released some P1 billion to renovate roads and highways nationwide.

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will use the funds for the preventive maintenance of 139.627 kilometers of national roads in eight regions.

Abad, in a statement, said the funds, sourced from the Special Support Fund of the Motor Vehicle Users Charge, will be used as a counterpart funding for National Roads Improvement and Management Project II (NRIMP-2).

NRIMP-2 is the second phase of a three-year program to improve roads and bridges nationwide.

“The P1-billion release is consistent with the commitment of the Aquino administration to improve and rehabilitate the country’s roads to optimize its structural soundness and lengthen their design life. The DPWH has made a commitment to have 15,872 kilometer national arterial roads to be 100 percent paved by 2014,” Abad said.

From the P1-billion budget, Abad noted the highest allocation of P150 million will be given to Region IV-A for the asphalt overlay of Tagaytay-Nasugbu Road in Batangas.

Among the road improvements are the P133-million asphalt overlay of Pagadian-Zamboanga City Road (Tigabalabag-Dita Section), Zamboanga; P133-million asphalt overlay of Cagayan Valley Road (Iguig-Amulung Section), Cagayan; P131-million asphalt overlay of Daang Maharlika Road, Davao City; P119-million asphalt overlay of Legazpi-Sto. Domingo-Tabaco, Camarines Sur, Albay; P116-million asphalt overlay of Daang Maharlika Road, Cabanatuan and Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija;

P96-million asphalt overlay of Sayre Highway (Kitaotao-Kibawe Section), Bukidnon; P65-million asphalt overlay of Davao-Bukidnon Road, Davao City; and P57-million asphalt overlay of Manila North Road (Pasuquin Section), Ilocos Norte.

Abad said DPWH seeks to pave 94 percent of the 15,872 kilometers of national arterial roads and 74 percent of the 11,428 km of national secondary roads by end-2012. The department targets 100-percent pavement of all national arterial roads by 2014 and all national secondary roads by 2016.

Abad added that 7,793 national bridges—330,089 lineal meters (lms) long— will be made permanent by 2012. Of the total bridge length, 104,293 lms are due for repair or rehabilitation while 8,544 lms of temporary bridges will be made permanent.

Albay province braces for La Nińa’s return

by Florencio P. Narito

LEGAZPI CITY—Albay provincial capitol has realigned its action plan amid forecast of La Nińa’s expected return in the first quarter of the year.

Governor Joey Salceda said Reactivated Albay Task Force La Nińa 2012 said preparations started in December last year, with a refresher training on weather-related hazards and responses conducted by the Albay Provincial Safety and Emergency Management Office for the 30-member core team from 720 barangays.

Aerial inspections of the lahar zone in the 2nd district, flood plains of the third district and landslide prone sections of the province were made before yearend by the Office of Civil Defense, Apsemo and the Philippine Air Force Task Operations Group 5.

The return of the El Nino’s counterpart was forecast by PAGASA, noting floods brought about by a relatively weak tropical storm Sendong in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in Northern Mindanao that left about 2,400 deaths.

Disaster officials said present risk maps had to be updated since previously declared safe areas were recently hit by massive flashfloods, landslides and lahar flows particularly at the foot of Mayon Volcano.

Salceda said preparations are hinged on the recent rainfall situation indicating that La Nińa would persist while weather systems causing heavy rainfall exist, as reported by PAGASA.

Tropical Storms Bebeng (May 8-9), Chedeng (May 25), Falcon (June 22), and Juaning (July 22) caused severe flooding, landslides and mudflows which indicated much run-off water and precipitation.

He said the onset of the northeast monsoon in the last quarter of 2011, has brought heavy rainfall prompting the Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to issue Public Safety Advisories.

Salceda said also boosted were community-based real time warning systems using rain gauge stations and flood marker, CCTV monitors, Communication Protocol via the disaster Infoboard, and evacuation plan and procedures.

This is good. Be ready than sorry. :)

Albay registers highest growth in Bicol in the Good Governance Index (GGI). Catanduanes is tops.

http://www.nscb.gov.ph/ru5/images/fs02s11.gif

excerpts from the article:

Among the six provinces of the Bicol Region in 2008, Catanduanes had the highest Good Governance Index (GGI) at 132.56, and ranked 25th among the 79 provinces in the country. In 2005, Catanduanes ranked 22nd and continued to have the highest GGI even in 2008.

The province of Albay has the second highest GGI in 2008 edging out other provinces in the region having higher rankings in 2005. Albay is also the most improved province in the region boasting of a 12.4 point increase or a 13.3 percent increase of its GGI from 2005 to 2008.

Sorsogon province, which used to be the second province of the region with the highest GGI in 2005 slid down to third place in 2008 with only a 4.78 point increase representing 4.8 percent rise. On the other hand, Camarines Norte improved its ranking from fifth in 2005 to fourth in 2008 with a 6.71 point
increase in its GGI representing 7.2 percent.

Albay is most improved. Four of the top ten are in Albay.

http://i822.photobucket.com/albums/zz149/kaniguan78/GGITable2.jpg

The bad news is that the Bicol Region as a whole has one of the lowest GGIs. in the country. But I think this has already improved. The figures are 2008 so I expect our ranking to improve.

for more on this go to NSCB-RD 5 (http://www.nscb.gov.ph/ru5/products/factsheet/fs02s11.htm)

So the top 5 Albay Restaurants as per Culinaria FB Poll are the following:

1. Small Talk Cafe
2. 1st Colonial Grill
3. Alibar's
4. Four Season's
5. Waway's

Business Process Outsourcing remains robust
Posted by Online on Jan 10th, 2012

Manila, Philippines – The government remains confident that the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector will sustain its growth in 2012. This confidence is boosted by the P500-million budget allotted by government this year to train more young people who may wish to apply for jobs in the call center industry.
Employment opportunities in the BPO industry remain robust. In less than 10 years, it has grown from an obscure industry into one of the country’s leading sources of employment and a big-dollar-earner. Today it employs over 400,000 Filipinos. Along with the remittance of Overseas Filipino Workers, it is often cited as a factor that keeps the national economy afloat.
There are 788 call centers in 20 key locations in the country, including in Mindanao. The Philippines holds a major portion of the global outsourcing market, due in large part to the English proficiency of most Filipinos. The country’s call centers count among their clients giant multinationals in the United States, Europe, Middle East, and Asia.
Most of the BPO facilities are located in First Tier cities in Metro Manila and Cebu. Second and Third Tier sites are located in regional areas such as Bacolod City, Baguio City, Cagayan de Oro, Clark (Angeles City), Dagupan City, Tacloban City, Dumaguete City, Lipa City, Iloilo City, Legazpi City, Iligan City, Olongapo City, and Urdaneta City.
Government incentives such as tax breaks and subsidies augur well for the growth of the Business Process Outsourcing sector. Notwithstanding some developments in the global scene, the sector is expected to continue to provide more jobs to young Filipinos and more revenues to the national coffer. MABUHAY!

Glad that Legazpi made it!!!

More BPOs, more jobs!

MANILA, Philippines–As part of its year-long 70th anniversary celebration, Philippine Airlines (PAL) is offering a special deal for domestic travelers: buy a one-way, economy-class ticket for P770 to any Luzon or Visayas destination, or P1,070 to any Mindanao point, and get a second domestic ticket for only P70.
Dubbed “You’re my PAL,” the two-in-one treat also allows domestic passengers to enjoy business class for only P3,970 to any Luzon or Visayas destination and P4,970 to Mindanao.
By presenting the discounted ticket (used or unused) at any PAL ticket office, another ticket may be bought to any of PAL’s 20 domestic destination for the giveaway price of just P70 (one-way, economy).
The discounted tickets are available only from January 6 to 11, 2012. These tickets are valid for travel from June 16 to September 30, 2012.
The P70 promo ticket must be ticketed from January 6 to 9, 2012 and valid for travel from January 16 to March 21, 2012.
Even at these very low fares, passengers still get to savor the full service that PAL is known for. These include assured seats on PAL’s modern fleet of Airbus A320-family aircraft, free baggage allowance, in-flight meals and beverages, and mileage accrual for members of Mabuhay Miles.
Covered by the promo are PAL-operated flights between Manila and Bacolod, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Cotabato, Davao, Dipolog, Dumaguete, General Santos, Iloilo, Kalibo, Laoag, Legazpi, Ozamiz, Puerto Princesa, Roxas, Tacloban, Tagbilaran and Zamboanga.
All promo fares are subject to government taxes, fees and surcharges. They are non-refundable. Rebooking and re-routing is also not allowed. The promo is not valid for groups of more than seven passengers.

Well, it's all because of the tourism and facilities, obvious naman. Na-observe ko lang booming na booming ang hotel industry.:banana::banana: Pero sabi nga kulang pa daw hotel natin dito kaya marami pa pinapayagan ang city hall na hotel firms. The bad news is that the Bicol Region as a whole has one of the lowest GGIs. in the country. But I think this has already improved. The figures are 2008 so I expect our ranking to improve.

Yan lang hehe, wara ako stats. Pero sige, magibo ako report pag may time hehe. Ngunyan pati, focused sa social media ang DOT campaign. Kaya sa iling ko mas dakula na role ang gagampanan kang page ta saka kang forum ta sa 2012.

We've been posting in this forum since 2005 and the Legazpi Facebook page was established in 2009. Advanced kita hehehe
